April 21-29, 2007

Trip to the Italian Riviera sponsored by MC (at least according to the snazzy broucher I was mailed). Book by 10/17 and save $200! 800-323-7373. Sigh!

My list of Jaspers who are in harm's way:

- Afghanistan

- - Feldman, Aaron (1997)

- Unknown location

- - Lynch, Chris (1991)

- Uzbekistan

- - Brock (nee Klein-Smith), Lt Col Ruth (1979)

… … my thoughts are with you and all that I don't know about.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

So, then, to every man his chance -- to every man, regardless of his birth, his shining golden opportunity -- to every man his right to live, to work, to be himself, to become whatever his manhood and his vision can combine to make him -- this, seeker, is the promise of America.

- -- Thomas Wolfe

Exhortation

http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=701

***Begin Quote***

Science is necessarily skeptical of things which are beyond our observation, but now that rogue waves are a measurable phenomenon they have been officially upgraded from legend to reality. This recent finding is very telling about how little we really know about our world's oceans, and how many secrets the sea must still hold.

***End Quote***

Well anytime one dismiss "common wisdom", "old wives tales", or the Intelligent Designer's wisdom (cleverly disguised as religious dogma) then one has to be prepared for consequences.

Now I am sure my fellow alumni would recognize that there are good reasons for "rules of thumb" and true wisdom is to recognize when they won't apply. For the rest of us, "rules of thumb" are ignored at one's own peril.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Author Elizabeth Royte To Discuss Garbage Land At Manhattan College

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Elizabeth Royte, author of Garbage Land: On the Secret Trail of Trash, will discuss her highly acclaimed book on Nov. 9 at 4:00 p.m. in Manhattan College’s Smith Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

A native of Park Slope, Brooklyn, Royte in Garbage Land explores where garbage goes after it leaves her curb. Along the way she learns how garbage collection is both ubiquitous and decidedly covert. Royte adroitly describes the ways in which garbage is increasingly a local and global issue.

Named to The New York Times’ list of 100 Notable Books of 2005 and to the Washington Post Book World’s list of Best Books of the Year, Garbage Land is told through the eyes of a keen reporter looking to provide insight on a part of everyday society that is both mundane and ignored.

Reviewing Garbage Land in September 2005, The New Yorker wrote, “(Royte’s) book takes the form of a quest for the surprising resting places of her yogurt cups, beer bottles, personal computer, and organic-fig-cookie packaging, and leads to an impassioned attack on over-consumption in America.”

Royte is a well-respected writer of science and the environment. Her articles have appeared in Harper’s, National Geographic, The New York Times Magazine, Outside and other national publications. She was the recipient of an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellowship and is the author of The Tapir’s Morning Bath: Mysteries of the Tropical Rain Forest, which was also named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

For more information about this event, please contact Dr. Daniel Collins, associate professor of English at Manhattan College, at (718) 862-7498 or {privacy invoked}.

Members of the media who would like to cover the event can call Scott Silversten at (718) 862-7232 or e-mail {privacy invoked} . Manhattan College is located at West 242nd Street near Broadway in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, one mile from the Westchester County line and accessible by MTA subway line 1.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering. John Kenny Sheehan, 77, a customer relations manager for Mobil Oil Corp. who became an accomplished wood carver, died of pneumonia Oct. 19 at Reston Hospital Center. He lived in Vienna.

Mr. Sheehan, president of the Northern Virginia Woodcarvers Association from 1991 to 1995, spent his weekends at Colvin Mill near Reston teaching people to carve. His human figures and decorative wooden plates won many awards.

He was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and graduated from Manhattan College in New York. He served in the Army during the Korean War. After he was discharged, he went to work for Mobil in New York as a sales representative, later moving to customer relations. The corporation moved 800 employees, including Mr. Sheehan, to its Fairfax office in 1980. He worked there until retiring in 1994.

In addition to carving wood, Mr. Sheehan volunteered at the White House personnel office, conducting research and handling calls from the public. In June 2006, he and his wife of 52 years, Joan Sheehan, were named White House volunteers of the week.

Mr. Sheehan, a collector of pens, pipes and watches, enjoyed trivia, storytelling and stumping his family with the multisyllabic vocabulary he picked up in his omnivorous reading. His answering machine welcomed messages from anyone except members of the House and Senate.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, of Vienna, include four children, Jack Sheehan of Eden Prairie, Minn., Nancy Sheehan Simpson of Sacramento, Caryl Sheehan of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Kevin Sheehan of Ashburn; a brother; and five grandchildren.

Anthony: Friends of a feather

October 28, 2006

Pity the cocky rec-ball crew that runs into Carmelo Anthony and his four closest friends on the basketball court. They form a fab five with a remarkable collective resume and the game to match.

Though Anthony is the headliner as he prepares for his fourth season with the Denver Nuggets, the others are pursuing hoop dreams of their own.

Five inner-city kids who grew up within minutes of each other in west Baltimore, five Division I college scholarships.

What are the odds?

"It’s not every day a kid from Baltimore goes on to play college basketball. That don’t happen all the time," said Dontaye Draper, a senior at the College of Charleston. "We’re just working right now, trying to get somewhere like Melo is."

{extraneous deleted}

Kenny Minor graduated from Manhattan College last spring and is hoping to continue his basketball career overseas or in the NBA Development League.

"We all had the same dream, and nobody’s ever given up on their dream," Minor said. "It just takes longer. You have to take detours, and it takes different routes.

"Carmelo was one of those exceptional cases. His destiny was to go to the NBA."

Anthony, Dunkley, Draper, Minor and Smith have taken to calling themselves HOOD Movement, an acronym that stands for Holding Our Own Destiny.

They make a point of giving back to their community whenever possible, but they are not as charitable when it comes to challengers who want a piece of them on the court.

Mr. Beer is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Manhattan College, where he earned a B.S. in Mathematics.  He received his M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Colorado.

The School of Risk Management was founded in 1901 as the Insurance Society of New York and over the years evolved into The College of Insurance (TCI). In June 2001, TCI merged with St. John’s University, becoming a school of The Tobin College of Business. Located in New York City’s downtown financial district, SRM awards undergraduate, M.B.A. and M.S. degrees in the insurance, risk management and actuarial science disciplines. Through its Center for Professional Education, SRM also provides education, training and consulting services to industry, governments, and regulators worldwide.

Subject: Rudy's Election Week Update

Rudy's Soultions America: Leadership. Security. Solutions

Dear Solutions America Team Member:

With the election less than one week away, Rudy Giuliani has been on the campaign trail, supporting Republican candidates in the South, Southwest, and Midwest of the United States.

Last week, he was in Tennessee, campaigning for U.S. Senate candidate Bob Corker in Nashville and Chattanooga. In response to a question on Iraq, Rudy said "The strategy in Iraq has to be governed by the goals of creating a stable, accountable government."

This week began with a trip to the Southwest, with Rudy in Phoenix, Arizona, meeting with law enforcement leaders and fire chiefs while lending his voice to a 1,000 person fundraiser for U.S. Senator John Kyl. Rudy said, "We need people like Senator Kyl, who understand that we need to be on the offense against terrorists."

On Halloween, Rudy was in the battleground state of Ohio for the 3rd time this election cycle, campaigning for Senator Mike DeWine in Cincinnati. While in Ohio, Rudy called into the Bill Cunningham radio show. Speaking about the Supreme Court, Rudy said: "Justices Roberts and Alito were both colleagues of mine [in the Reagan Justice Department] - people I worked with and I admire tremendously. I thought that they were inspired choices that the President made - inspired in many ways, because they also were people who had a strong conservative background and strict constructionists." He added, "Justice Scalia was also a colleague of mine...and he probably would have been my choice for Chief Justice."

Over the past six months, Rudy Giuliani has campaigned in 25 states and given more than $380,000 directly to Republican candidates in tough races to date.

As we close in on Election Day, be on the lookout for more frequent e-mails from Solutions America, detailing Rudy Giuliani's campaign schedule, including digital footage of campaign events in South Carolina, and Iowa on election night.

Sincerely,
The Solutions America Team

David:

Basically you're close.

I have automatic scans setup looking for "manhattan college". Actually the search strings are little more complicated to drop Marymount and Manhattan Music College and that ilk. http://home.comcast.net/~jxymxu7sn5ho9d/Manhattan_College_ology.htm

Weekly, I produce a webpage that summarizes what I find.

(Actually I work on it a little bit each day and post it on Saturday evening. Yeah, I have no life.)

I then email it to about 750 Jaspers and about another 750  visit the website each week. It's a interesting hobby that I have urged the MC alumni office to take over, but they don't want to.

(All though they do take "my" findings. I know because in reporting one obit I made a typo -- I'm a lousy clerk -- and it was picked up verbatim into their quarterly AlumniNotes. Next time I saw Brother President -- I'm on the IT Governance Committee that helps him plan the College's technology -- I gave him both items. He started it by saying that "they do their own research" in a prior meeting. So now they REALLY hate me for showing them up. We have history. They do dumb things in technology and I clean it up.)

I have a standard invite at http://www.jasperjottings.com/a_jasper_jottings_invitation.htm  and over the last decade I'd estimate that I have linked up about fifty old friends, a few relatives, and a bunch of other odd connections.

Hope I got you a few votes. You may want to look at a portion of my blog http://reinkefj.wordpress.com/tag/liberty/  to see how much I LOVE politicians. ;-)

Regards,
Fjohn

Ziggs harvested all the public personal pages as a search engine would. Using their free offering, I have identified ~700 possible Jaspers from it. I'm planning to share 10 "found on Ziggs" Jaspers each week in the coming weeks. The first group moves in this week's issue. I don't like to overwhelm the readership with too much of anything.
