Fake 'Catholic Voters Guide' Published by Former Aide to John Kerry
Attempt to recapture the Catholic vote launched by Democratic supporters
By John-Henry Westen

***Begin Quote***

WASHINGTON, September 29, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - An attempt to recapture the Catholic vote has been launched by Democratic supporters.  A new 2006 Voter Guide has been put out by "Catholic in Alliance for the Common Good" (CACG) a group headed up by Alexia Kelley who in 2004 worked as a religion advisor to John Kerry in the closing weeks of his campaign.

***End Quote***

Caveat Emptor. Not every thing labeled "Catholic" is "Catholic". It's easy to be fooled. It's a fool to be easy.

It's easy for me, since I don't like politicians of either persuasion.

Of course, me fellow alums are much smarter than this dub old injineer, and us such, will be discriminating who they take "information" from!

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Obituaries

Anthony Suraci

Thursday, October 19, 2006 2:36 PM CDT

Anthony Suraci, a long-time community and political activist from the Long Island City/Sunnyside area, passed away on September 29 after a long bout with Alzheimer's disease.

He is survived by his children, Gae LaSalle and Joseph Suraci, his son-in-law, Michael LaSalle, daughter-in-law Carol Suraci, granddaughter Kristin Suraci and sister Angeline Suraci. His wife Caroline passed away in 2005.

Funeral services were held at St. Jude's Church in Mastic Beach.

Born in Calabria, Italy, Suraci came to the U.S. at nine months of age. After high school, he attended Manhattan College, from which he graduated at the top of his class with a business degree in 1938. Suraci then received a master's degree from Columbia University and subsequently became a certified public accountant (CPA).

In the 1950s and 1960s, he owned a chain of women's apparel stores in New Jersey and New York.

After he was forced to close due to competition from the burgeoning shopping centers and malls, Suraci became the comptroller of William A. White, a major real estate company, and later, the Director of Internal Audit at New York University. He continued in private practice as a CPA well into his 80s, when he fell ill.

Ever civic-minded, Suraci served as president of the Thompson Hill Civic Association, president of the Woodside Republican Club, and Cubmaster of Cub Pack 221.

He is best known, however, for leading a successful challenge for the New York State Assembly against the Republican organization in the 37th Assembly District, led by former State Senator Martin Knorr, when his son, Joseph Suraci, defeated Michael Matonis, the organization candidate, in 1982.

The elder Suraci was a driving force behind the United Republicans of Western Queens.

Among the many charitable acts performed by the club were the distribution of surplus food to the needy, annual holiday toy drives, and the donation of clothes to homeless veterans.

Roselle Catholic hails legend
Thursday, October 19, 2006

Frank Gagliano's coaching talents left a lasting impression on the members of Roselle Catholic High School track and field team, and now the school has done something in return.

The school recently named the newly renovated entranceway to its track and field facility the Gagliano Walkway of Champions.

"This will forever showcase the man who helped establish Roselle Catholic as an athletic stronghold in the state," said Brother Dan O'Riordan, the school's director of development, who spearheading the project.

"Coach Gags, as we call him, is a legend in the U.S. track and field community and, in addition to being one of the most respected coaches of all time, he has been a friend and mentor to countless athletes here at Roselle Catholic as well at every institution which was lucky enough to have availed of his gifted coaching talent and leadership," said O'Riordan.

Gagliano is a former Bronx high school quarterback and University of Richmond graduate who began coaching track and field after a brief career in the Canadian Football League.

Gagliano, who now lives in California with his wife, Robbie, began his coaching career at Roselle Catholic in 1960.

"He was asked to start the track and field program, and in his nine years here, his teams captured three Championship of America titles at the Penn Relays, three N.J. state indoor track crowns, and one state cross country championship," said O'Riordan.

Gagliano went on to serve as assistant track coach at Manhattan College in New York and then went to Rutgers University in 1974 as an assistant coach.

He later joined Georgetown University, where he developed numerous national champions and Olympic athletes until his retirement in 2001.

O'Riordan said Gagliano "continues to utilize his master coaching skills today as he helps develop many of our country's most elite track and field athletes who are part of the Nike Elite Team he trains."

Gagliano and his wife flew in for the dedication ceremony.

Just before the event, Gagliano and former Roselle Catholic track greats Joe Savage, Bobby Hoffman and Denis Kanach spoke with the current cross-country and track team as well as other coaches and athletes at the school.

"It was an inspiring and most motivational experience for our athletes," said O'Riordan.

The next day, Gagliano was further honored at this year's You Make A Difference Awards Dinner.

Dear John,

I know that as a general rule you are not including Sports stories in Jasper Jottings, but this one, I think, might be an exception! Not just because Catherine is my grand-daughter (her mother Catherine graduated from Mt. St. Vincent in 1981 and took some of her courses at Manhattan), her cousin Lauren Johnson was in the Class of 2004, her uncle Michael was in the Class of 1980, her aunt Theresa was a member of the Class of 1981, her uncle by marriage Charles Johnson was in the Class of 1980, her Great Uncle Edward was in the Class of 1959, her great-great uncle Thomas P. Manning was in the Class of 1932, so in light of this history this is more than a Sports Story!

Seriously, we are all very proud of her accomplishment and look forward to many more under the JASPER Banner!

WOMEN'S SWIMMING DEFEATS STEVENS TECH IN SEASON OPENER

Hoboken, N.J. (October 20, 2006)—Freshman Catherine Chan <http://gojaspers.com/roster_view.cfm?roster_id=3190>  opened up her collegiate career and the Manhattan Women’s Swimming season by earning a key victory in the 50 Yard Freestyle and taking second in the 100 Yard Freestyle to help the Lady Jaspers defeat Stevens Institute of Technology in a dual meet on Friday night.

Chan claimed first place in the 50 Yard Free with a time of 26.18s, which was more than two seconds better than the second place time. That runner-up time came from another Manhattan freshman as Megan Goldrick <http://gojaspers.com/roster_view.cfm?roster_id=3191>  clocked in at 28.20s. Goldrick also helped the Lady Jaspers to victory by swimming the final leg of the 200 Yard Medley Relay, which Manhattan won with a time of 2:01.27.

Chan’s time of 58.28s in the 100 Yard Free was second only to her junior teammate <http://gojaspers.com/roster_view.cfm?roster_id=2216> <http://gojaspers.com/roster_view.cfm?roster_id=2753> Maura McGowan <http://gojaspers.com/roster_view.cfm?roster_id=3193> . McGowan, who broke Manhattan’s school record in the event at last year’s MAAC Championship with a time of 56.33s, clocked in at 57.50s on Friday evening.

In addition to winning the 100 Yard Free, McGowan earned points for the team by taking second in the 200 Yard Free. Manhattan sophomore, and record holder, Megan O’Keefe won the event by touching in at 2:04.72.

Manhattan, who won by an official tally of 113-84, will continue its opening weekend by competing in the McCarthy Invitational on October 22.

Dear John,

I thought that some of our subscribers might be interested in reading the following e-mail that I received from John Nason, '52, that explains why he and Jeanne had to cut short their latest trip to Europe short. They are both veteran travelers abroad and that experience served them well.

                           Mike McEneney

# # #

Dear Mike

Our latest trip to Europe didn't turn out exactly as planned, but all's well that ends well.

The first week, a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, in Bosnia Hercegovina, was extraordinary for a lot of reasons. We were both awed and impressed by what we saw there.

But when we got to Dubrovnik, Croatia, the jumping off spot for the second leg of our journey, I found myself in the hospital . . . where I remained for 3-1/2 days, from 7;30 a.m. on Sunday to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The reason? A case of diverticulitis, a first for me (and I hope the last), and it took all that time to pump me full of antibiotics to reduce the inflammation – because until that occurred they were reluctant to release me to travel 4,000 miles back to the U.S. It's a long story that's best told over a beer sometime when we'll all think it's very funny. In any event, we were outa there on Wednesday and we hopped on a plane the next day to begin the long road home.

I feel very good right now but my doctor told me Saturday that he wants me to continue antibiotics for another few weeks and to have a CT scan this week to confirm what doctors on two continents strongly suspect (and are, in fact, treating me for). Jeanne has been an absolute brick since all this began, staying all day at my bedside and then spending hours every night, back at the hotel, dealing with insurance and travel people back in the U.S. who were six hours behind us on the clock.

A few days before we left we were visiting you, flat on your back in St. Francis Hospital. A week or so later, it was my turn – in a faraway place where English is not the language of choice. I hope that you're back on your feet again, feeling hale, hearty – and more cautious. Love to Cathie.

John

P.S. Thanks for the Al Blake obit. He was the last of a breed.

{JR:  Sounds like luck to get home in one piece! }

Dear John,

I had sent an e-mail to a number of fellow Jaspers advising them of Al Blake's passing and the information about the Funeral and asked if some could attend as I was not yet permitted to drive. My brother Ed, '59 and George Skau, '59, Vice President of the Alumni Society, did attend. They were able to talk with some of Al's family and share some Al stories with them. I was surprised to learn the Al served in the 82nd Airborne in World War II.

# # #

Here are some of the comments  that I received:

Subject: Alfred J. Blake R.I.P.

Jeanne and I have been out of the country for the past few weeks so I didn't learn the sad news of Al's death until I started checking my e- mail last night.

I first came across Al in the late Fifties  or early Sixties when he was involved with a midtown Alumni Advertising Club and I was a striving young Madison Avenue copywriter. We'd meet for lunch every month or so at Reidy's Restaurant on 51st St. (?) which was (no surprise) owned by fellow alum Maurice Reidy who graduated, as I recall,  a few years ahead of Al. It was a popular watering hole for guys (few gals in those days) in the communications business. The old CBS building was only a block away. Al was an engaging character even then and not much changed over the years. My late wife and I attended a party years ago in his place in Woodside and met his dear wife Eithne and other, well, engaging characters who were their friends.

We actually played some sort of board game that Al had invented and was trying to market.

Over the years, when Al became a regular at NAC meetings and alumni retreats, I made many pickups and drop offs in Woodside transporting Al to and from the College. He never learned to drive a car and when I queried him about this once, he reminded me that Robert Moses never had a driver's license either. Somehow, he managed to get all around the Metropolitan area – especially to the College and to daughter Susan in New Jersey – thanks to the largesse of different alumni.

Someone up there always sent a Guardian Angel to get him around. And I hope they're still looking after for him now that he's gone up to join them.

They don't make guys like Al Blake anymore. He will be missed.

Yes, they certainly broke the mold when they made Al....he was unique, quite a character.... I have a lot of fond memories of Al   myself...I first met him when he was renting in Long Beach, with   Uncle Pete('49) (quite the interesting summer, as I'm sure all can   imagine), and Al invited Brother Malcolm and Brother Edward down  for  the afternoon....As I was about to enter my senior year in an  all  boys catholic high school (run by Brothers I might add), I had  never  seen anyone talk as "straight-forwardly" to a Brother, as Al  did that  day.....And they took it in stride, as they knew Al well,  and knew he  was just trying to have a good time...His company was  also very  enjoyable as Uncle Pete brought him to numerous Giants  games over the  years, and on occasion he would have us back to his  apartment after  the game....lots of fun

Al was one of a kind!  Regrettably, I am locked in to work commitments tomorrow and can not make it.  I have fond memories of driving Al home to Mahwah after one of our NAC meetings.  I had the leased Porsche Boxster at the time and Al enjoyed the notoriety as we pulled up to his daughters house with the top down.

I'm planning to share 10 "found on Ziggs" Jaspers each week in the coming weeks. The first group moves in this week's issue. I don't like to overwhelm the readership with too much of anything. Besides "harvesting" takes a lot of time. And, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!

{No time. No volunteers. So I hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time.}

Fonts of Jaspers

Here are sites where "there be Jaspers there". I have no "extra" time to go thru the site, extract the Jaspers, post them in the weekly Jottings, let them know Jasper Jottings exists, and invite them to read it. I have had no volunteers. (Depressing!) So I am logging them here and hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time. I'm listing the sources to hopefully "guilt" someone into helping. Besides while I know that "harvesting" takes a lot of time, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!

Haynesworth expects punishment for stomping Gurode
ESPN.com news services

***Begin Quote***

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was ejected early in the third quarter Sunday after he kicked Dallas center Andre Gurode in the face. Now the tackle expects to be punished, and knows he deserves it.

Nice sportsmanship.

Don't think he learned that in Church or Parochial School!

Expects to be punished? Golly gee why. That's just normal behavior for the "professionals".

And people admire these guys, why?

They should get down on their knees and that the Intelligent Designer every day for what they have been given. I suggest that the Commissioner impose on him a 100 hours at the various children's hospitals. Maybe that will help him understand that sports is supposed to be epitome of the human condition and the vanquished opponents are fellow human beings.

And that’s the last word.
