Instead of Dumping Rejected Food Shipments into Landfills, Truckers Are Donating Them to Local Charities
By McKinley Corbley - Dec 17, 2018

*** begin quote ***

Instead of letting thousands of pounds of food go to waste, this new program is allowing truck drivers to donate rejected food deliveries to charity.

Truck drivers will often arrive at a grocery store to drop off several pallets of ordered food only to have the products rejected by the supermarkets because there was either an error in the ordering process; the food was cosmetically damaged in transit; there were equipment failures en route that caused delay; or a variety of other reasons.

Regardless, this often results in tons of edible food being dumped into a landfill.

Instead, the Indy Hunger Network charity created their Food Drop program which connects truck drivers with nearby food banks that can put the products to good use.

Sounds like “we” could use more of that!

COMMENT: Kenny, Bob (MC1968) on those who donate to anti-gay causes and support anti-gay marriage legislation

2019-Jul-22

Re: YA (Yet Another) Chick-fil-A "act of kindness" story

I'm sure the story is touching. An act of kindness by one employee does not redeem Chick-fil-A for donating to anti-gay causes and supporting anti-gay marriage legislation. As a supposed libertarian you should oppose using the power of the state to enforce "Christian principles" by regulating who someone can love and marry. There are documented instances of Nazi soldiers protecting Jews during the Holocaust. Does that redeem Nazism?

Kenny, Bob (MC1968)

[JR: Bob, as a little L libertarian, I believe that there should be no Gooferment involvement in “marriage”.  The institution of marriage predates Gooferment.  “Marriage Licenses” are a result of racist laws to prevent Black and White marriages.  So, it’s NOT a matter of “using the power of the state” to enforce "Christian principles”; it IS a matter of “using the power of the state” to enforce “marriage” at all.  People should be forming LLCs if they want Gooferment recognition.  No one should be seeking to use the "power of the state” on UnConstitutional actions. Nothing "redeems” anything. But I don’t equate Chick-fil-a exercising their rights as the equivalent of “Nazism". I think Chick-fil-a is wrong for focusing on the wrong target, but I’ll defend their right to be wrong.]

COMMENT: Toner, Mike (MC1972) won't go to CfA and spend his money

2019-Jul-22

Dear f. John

As always, thanks for your fine and unceasing efforts as CIC!!

Regarding your Chick-fil-A endnote... Many of us can hold disparate thoughts in our heads at the same time. So, while I am sure that many if not most of Chick-fil-A's are fine and altruistic people, who may well be inspired by the Christianity of the CfA ethos, the fact is that the CfA foundation, controlled by the founders, continues to contribute to anti-gay causes and organizations. I have no beef (pun intended) with the people who work at CfA restaurants but I do have a problem thinking that some of what I pay at a CfA restaurant would ultimately go to funding causes that I do not wish to help support.

Toner, Mike (MC1972)

[JR: Thanks for the praise ••• CfA has the “right” to do what they want as do ALL of us.  All I keep saying is that they aren’t as bad as the Left makes them out to be.  My argument with them is they seek to have the Gooferment get MORE involved in “moral issues”.  And, that’s just dumb.  By urging Gooferment “action”, that just encourages the politicians and bureaucrats to keep Americans divided and arguing instead of focusing on the problem of Gooferment.  I’d rather the Gooferment just do ONLY its Constitutionally mandated duties and NOTHING else.  It shouldn’t matter who’s in charge because it could NOT be used against anyone’s beliefs.  IMHO]

JNEWS: Tucciarone, Joseph [MC1965] had a role in the moon landing

2019-Jul-22

One giant leap
By: LIBN Staff July 19, 2019

Their memories are vivid and colorful: This is what they said:

*** begin quote ***

Joseph Tucciarone, founder of National Network of Accountants and former assistant spacecraft test manager at Kennedy Space Center

Like many Americans I watched the first moon landing glued to the television screen. However, unlike many other Americans, the moon landing on July 20, 1969 represented the end of a long journey for me. I graduated from Manhattan College in 1965 and immediately went to work with Grumman Aircraft of Bethpage.

Not long after, I was reassigned to Kennedy Space Center. During my days (there) I witnessed the launch of the Saturn 5 rocket, the first non-manned launch of the lunar module as well as the death of three astronauts during testing at the Cape. The landing on the moon represented the end of a long journey and the beginning of a new era for both me and America. The day was tense and I was very anxious. However, by night time I was beaming with joy and filled with pride and excitement. This was the day we as Americans changed the course of history and I was part of that change. It was exhilarating.

I personally grew from this experience into a proud American and a fulfilled engineer. This was a great moment in history. I believed at that time and until today, that this event was similar to Christopher Columbus landing on the shores of the new world.

The Aliann Pompey Invitational in Georgetown, Guyana, named for the country’s four-time track Olympian, recently had its fourth edition. The fan base has continued to grow as has the level of competition. Pompey, an assistant coach at St. John’s University, wanted to bring international competitors to the track meet and also provide exposure for the country’s young talent eager to earn U.S. athletic scholarships.

Although she was greeted with enthusiasm from the Invitational’s inception, Pompey had been concerned whether the track meet would have staying power. “There have been meets in the region that didn’t quite make it past year three,” she said. “The feedback I got from the sponsors and the athletes was really positive. I’m thrilled for year five. We’ve started talking about what we would do differently and how that would look. It’s almost safe to say it’s a fixture now.”

From Jane :

Life has been an emotional rollercoaster these last couple of weeks. We have recently found out that the cancer has now made it to his calf muscle. As you know, Dave has been on his new chemo regimen. He’s successfully handled four rounds so far so a pet scan was in order. He has his infusion on day one and is sent home with a pump for two more.

Anyone who has been involved with cancer knows the terrible waiting period from scan to results. I think this is absolutely the hardest part for me. As a planner, I’m always dreaming of the best but bracing myself for the worst.

Last week Dave had chest pains in the middle of the night. This was new to us and very very frightening to say the least. Dave adamantly refused to allow me to call for help. Ughh, you are caught between calling 911 and respecting his wishes. We silently waited it out and called the doctor in the am. I think it was the longest night that I’ve had in a very long time trying to sleep with my hand on his chest just to make sure he was still breathing. Thank goodness it subsided and in the end the doctor felt it was not his heart… (I tend to disagree, but what would I know?).

Let it be known, if there should be a next time, there will be no hesitation on my part to call for help. This week brought vomit one day and severe kidney pain another. Thank goodness we were scheduled for a doctor routine visit the morning the kidney pain transpired. The good news is that the chemo is creating a slight change for the better in the tumors, holding it at bay. This allows him to continue with the chemo. As for the kidney pain, they couldn’t see a blockage or a change in the stent placement but decided that the stent should be removed. That was taken care of today so now we wait and see how he fares.

Dave is the most determined person that I know which absolutely works to our benefit. On a more positive note, we made it to NY for our nephew Jeff and Laura’s wedding! What a wonderful day it was. Family time always soothes the soul!

To top that, the most fantastic news in our world is that Brittany and Alex got engaged last weekend!!! Hooray!!! Dave so wants to be able to walk her down the aisle! Very, very cool!

Our hearts are full! Please keep praying for him.

Here's a bit more info. My bishop is sending me to finish the degree in Canon Law. He's given me 2 years to do the work for a Juris Canonici Doctor--A Doctor of Canon Law. I got J.C.L./ Licentiate ["Masters"] 15 years ago from Catholic University in Wasthington D.C. The idea is that I get the Doctorate and then return to the Diocese of Bridgeport as Judicial Vicar/Officialis [the chief Judge/Canonical Officer] of the Diocese. The bishop assures me that I'm not too old to do it, and I've got to believe him. I fly out tomorrow to Milan, and then go to a place called Verbania, to a school to work on my very rusty Italian, then in September I head to Rome and matriculate and start classes at the Angelicum [the Dominican University in Rome] in the beginning of October. ENDNOTE: There are no innocent bystanders in Hell ... ...

from a redit thread:

*** begin quote ***

Burns: Well, everybody knows, ‘war is Hell.’

Hunnicutt: Remember, you heard it hear last.

Hawkeye: War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse.

Father Mulcahy: How do you figure that, Hawkeye?

Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?

Father Mulcahy: Um, sinners, I believe.

Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell, but war is chock full of them – little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

*** end quote ***

Almost makes me cry!
