FLASH! Important info received after the deadline

I’m renovating for the new year. If there’s something you like, speak up to keep it. Also, if there’s something you hate, now’s a good time to get rid of it.

(Any way, I remain “your respectful chronicler of Jasper Achievement”, until replaced, or, stop reading --- which based on participation doesn’t seem very unlikely that you all have stopped reading!)

Milkin' Mamas aid premature, ill babies
By Cindy Carcamo

*** begin quote ***

Now it's the latest business venture for Alice Toth and her 35-year-old identical twin sister, Keri Pommerenk.

The inseparable duo that has done almost everything together - even pregnancy - launched a breast milk bank depot, called Milkin' Mamas Breast Milk Bank, this summer. The business links nursing mothers who want to donate their excess breast milk to mothers with premature or ill babies.

*** end quote ***

Sort of like giving blood!

And, only a woman can do it.

Humbling.

We say we’re “pro life”. But, what actions to we perform. Talk’s cheap.

As we come into the season of renewal, have to look closely at what we do!

imho.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. - Walter Thomas Ward was born Jan. 14, 1939, in Hampton, Va., to the late Jacob and Sarah Shields Ward. To family and friends he was affectionately called ‘Fuzzy.’ On Nov. 28, 2007, he departed this life at home while in Phelps Hospice Care.

At the age of 11, Mr. Ward accepted Christ, was baptized and became a member of Queen Street Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. George S. Russell. Mr. Ward later became a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, where he faithfully served for 28 years. For 12 of those years, he served as Trustee Board Chairman. He also volunteered with the Mount Lebanon Food Pantry Ministry.

After his tour of duty with the Army, Mr. Ward continued to play his favorite sport in the Rucker Professional Basketball Tournament, the Eastern Professional Basketball League, and various tournaments throughout the Tri-State area. Later in life his love of sports led him to become an avid tennis player.

On Aug. 22, 1964, he was joined in holy matrimony with Lorraine Scott in East Elmhurst, N.Y. He resided in Cortlandt Manor for 35 years and was a loving husband and father. Dedicating his life to excellence in education for 32 years, Mr. Ward taught in the New York City Public Schools (Queens); Children’s’ Village, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., and BOCES, Yorktown Heights, N.Y.

Mr. Ward was preceded in death by twin sister, Juanita; a sister, Verdell; three brothers, James, Melton and Calvin.

The Girls Player of the Year, Ellen Oswald, always had an interest in golf, but she admits it’s grown in recent years. The senior at Clarkstown South High School had been splitting time evenly between horseback riding, basketball, and golf before deciding one needed more of her attention. The result this year was wins in several Met PGA one-day events, and a second place showing in the WMGA’s Maureen Orcutt Championship.

Now Ellen, whose father, Gerry, played basketball at Manhattan College, is entertaining offers from several Division I college golf programs.

“I decided I really liked golf and I wanted to spend more time working on it,” said Oswald, who plays out of Westchester Country Club. “Then you start having a couple of good rounds and it’s like, ‘Wow, I can do this.’ “

Dear John,

Today's NY Times 11/28/07. has an Obitutary on page B7 for Herb McKenley the great Jamaican Track Star.

In the lengthy piece there is this paragraph:

" McKenley's frustration continued atthe 1952 Olympics, in Helsinki, Finland. In the 100-meter final, he appeared to catch Lindy Remigino ('53), an unheralded American. But despite Remigino's urging that Mckenely had won, the judges said that Remigino had been first and McKenley second."

An interesting mention of my classmate!

                     Mike

{JR:  I never heard that facet of the story. I always heard that he won. It makes him sound like a real winner and an honest fellow to boot. }

{JR: Neil has http://HealyOSullivanTravel.com with a Pub Tour and if nothing else an idyllic pic of Ireland. And, I’m sure that if you ask for the “Jasper discount”, he’ll only mark it up 100% for my commission.   :-)  Maybe Jottings should have an additional section – like the baseball clubs do – You know Barthman the official jeweler of the Yankees, little Debbie the official cake of the Phillies, Meadowlands the official home of the NEW YORK Jiants and Gjets?  }

{JR: For the humorly challenged, there are no kick backs in the creation of Jasper Jottings. In fact, there’s no money in it at all. Hmmm??? Is that secondary definition of insanity?}

Message:

Mr. Reinke,

It is an honor that you wrote in to my father's guest book. He always spoke of the fun and memorable times he had a Manhattan College. As he said, "those were the best years of his life".

Thank you again for your kind words about our father on his guest book. The family and I wish you a happy and Healthy Holiday season.

Best,
Megan Root and Family

# - # - #

Dear Ms. Megan:

Thanks for your kind, but very unnecessary words. Jaspers, seem to universally share a special spot for that strange place call Manhattan College in Riverdale.

While I think one can't logically identify "the best years", that is merely the StarTrek Spock in me coming out. From an engineering, theology, and philosophy perspective, I "know" it is "wrong", but I too have the same feeling.

It was my sad duty to pass the news along to our fellow alums. The Guest Book of your Dad, and those of all our fellow Jaspers, serve as both a reflection of their good works, and an inspiration to those of us left behind to emulate them. Personally, I try to ensure that I "collect" everyone as "Journal of Jasper Achievement". It's amazing to see common threads. I'm not sure if that is the MC training, or self-selection bias. But, I'm proud to be in such company. It's not the paper diploma that binds us together; it's the place, the common ideal, and the recognition of the value of each person.

Thanks for the positive reinforcement that this effort is beneficial to my fellow alum's family. It's important that it's "bidirectional".

As we come to the Holy Day season, I can only hope that we all find -- my  favorite phrase "Dona Nobis Pacem" -- Peace.

Best wishes to all,
and how I end each Jasper Jottings --- "Bon courage a vous tous",

In today’s race, Slinskey will have strong competition from an athlete he calls his “buddy,” Joseph McElhoney, from nearby Beacon, N.Y. McElhoney, who is set to graduate from Manhattan College in two weeks, is just 21 and finished 12th at his university’s regional cross country championship in 2006.

“‘You know,’” Slinskey recalls telling McElhoney, “‘I’m trying to set this world record. If you kick my butt it’s not going to be good.’ There’s 18 years of youth on his side.”

The two both competed in the Steamtown Marathon in Scranton, Pa., last September. Slinskey ran 2:30:28 to McElhoney’s 2:35:06.

“Right now, if we were going to race head to head we’d be about the same,” said Slinskey. “I’m hoping I can get away from him pretty good.”

Reward For Mystery Lion
Posted: 5:50 AM Nov 1, 2007
Last Updated: 10:15 AM Nov 1, 2007
Reporter: The Associated Press

*** begin quote ***

If an African lion is roaming the mountains of southeastern West Virginia, Angus Peyton wants it captured, not killed.

*** end quote ***

And, I want to be young again.

Given WVa tradition of guns, I’d say that I’d bet on “killed”. It is all well and good to feel sorry for a misplaced animal. It’s another thing to put people at risk to capture it. Sure all things being equal capture. But we are not talking about someone’s pet gerbil here. That lion maybe hungry and we look like lunch. So, I’d suggest the WVa-ers in the area carry their “lion discouragement device” at the ready. 30-06 should do nicely. Sorry, my sympathy is with the humans.

?

And that’s the last word.
