FLASH! Important info received after the deadline

Last week’s issue went out with the wrong URL. I was able to fix the online copies, but not the Yahoo email distribution, or the Yahoo saved message. So, I just deleted the Yahoo copy. If I put it up again, it’ll send it out annoying every one. Argh! I’ll try to do better, but I warned you I was a lousy clerk!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

“There are many things the government can’t do, many good purposes it must renounce. It must leave them to the enterprise of others. It cannot feed the people. It cannot enrich the people. It cannot teach the people. It cannot convert the people.”

~ Lord Acton (1834–1902)

EXHORTATION

October 15, 2007
The Man Who Chose To See
by Rev. Emmanuel Charles McCarthy

*** begin quote ***

The life of Franz Jägerstätter was the ordinary life of an Austrian farmer in the village of St. Radegund. He was a devout Catholic, a daily communicant who prayed the rosary while doing farm chores. Sexton of his parish church, he was married and had three children. But, on August 9, 1943 Franz Jägerstätter’s life became other than ordinary, when he was legally killed by the German Military for refusing to kill for the German Military.

***and***

However, before bishops, priests, ministers, pastors and Christians in general will be able to say that heroic, "No," they will, like Franz Jägerstätter, have to first choose to see. They will have to choose to see with the eyes of their hearts, as well as with the eyes of their minds. They will have to choose to see that the death-dealing elephant of justified violence and enmity has entered the Church and has been elevated by Church leaders and Christians to an ethical status equal to or superior to Jesus and His Way. They will have to choose to see that this Christian equivalent of the Hebrews’ golden calf has ruined and is ruining almost everything that, the Father through Jesus, wants to do for all His infinitely loved sons and daughters – each and every one of whom He drew out of nothingness for the gift of Eternal Life with Him.

*** end quote ***

Do we have the courage of a “Franz Jägerstätter” or the insight of a Pastor Martin Niemöller? I’d like to think of Blessed Franz and Pastor Martin as the spiritual icons of Jaspers. When we see the “Barbara Streisand” that passes for civil civic discourse about the welfare – warfare state, do we take a stand and just say “no”. Quietly, simply, unequivocally, “no”. Not rudely. Not confrontationally. Not with “a different violence” in our heart. But with the focus of a Gandhi, the stubbornness of a MLK, the internal grace of a Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu (Mother Teresa). Just “no”. Now I know my fellow alums will be much better at this than I am. But who knows which straw will break that old proverbial camel’s back?

“no”

Dona Nobis Pacem

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Tom Zugibe has plans for Rockland District Attorney’s Office

By STEVE LIEBERMAN THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: November 12, 2007)

***Begin Quote***

Thomas Zugibe thought long and hard about running for Rockland district attorney.

The Haverstraw Democrat and son of the former Rockland medical examiner said he had been thinking about becoming Rockland’s top prosecutor since 1995, when the job first opened without an incumbent.

In the proceeding 12 years, he said, the timing wasn’t right. He had family obligations that made a long campaign difficult or financially impossible.

Zugibe, a former prosecutor, spent two decades building a law practice with Arthur Ferraro and working for nonprofit groups. He also served as West Haverstraw village justice for 18 years.

“I had the passion to be district attorney for many years,” Zugibe said Wednesday, still exhausted from election night celebrating and a nearly yearlong campaign.

This year, the political and personal stars became aligned. Three of his four children are in college and life was easier.

“We saw light at the end of the tunnel this time,” Zugibe said. “I’m 54. The opportunities were diminishing. I believe I can make a difference as district attorney.”

He said he felt Republican Michael Bongiorno also was vulnerable after 12 years in office.

He saw Bongiorno as an accomplished lawyer without scandal, but felt the office could do better, including reducing crime before it occurred. Zugibe also knew Democratic voters outnumbered Republicans across the county.

The race was hard fought, with Zugibe pressing his programs and criticism. Bongiorno stuck to promoting that his record led to record-low crime in Rockland, saying Zugibe distorted the facts.

Zugibe beat Bongiorno by 1,223 votes. A last-minute bloc vote from New Square - 1,978 for Zugibe and 23 for Bongiorno - helped put him over the top.

Zugibe takes office in January. He doesn’t come without some first-hand knowledge of the job.

He worked as a county prosecutor, handling violent crime and drug cases from 1981 to 1987, and leaving as an executive assistant to then-District Attorney Kenneth Gribetz. He came to the office after two years as a prosecutor or the state Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Office.

“He was a very competent attorney,” said Jerry O’Leary, a retired state trooper and District Attorney’s Office investigator. “He was a professional and fun to work with. He will do well.”

Wilbur Aldridge, a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People official from Haverstraw, said Zugibe has principles and sticks to them, like his father, Frederick Zugibe, the former medical examiner who groomed his son in the fine art of autopsy and forensic pathology.

Aldridge said he knows Zugibe’s wife, Peggy, a member of the North Rockland Board of Education.

“He comes from a very prominent and well-respected family, a very civic-minded family,” Aldridge said. “He speaks his mind.”

Aldridge said he was impressed with Zugibe’s views that crime prevention should play a major role for prosecutors, along with convicting the criminals.

“He spoke about more than one method of crime fighting,” Aldridge said.

Zugibe has big plans for the office, aiming to change the culture while being strong on prosecuting violent criminals.

He said he hopes to develop a closer working relationship with the police departments, improving communication on pleas and cases. He ran with the support of the Rockland Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association leadership.

A cornerstone of Zugibe’s office will be community prosecution, during which prosecutors will work in the community. The prosecutors will work with the police, clergy, civic leaders and those people on the cusp of crime.

A team will visit counties that have community prosecution programs and a pilot unit will be established in Rockland.

He said he also has plans to create a special-victims unit, comprising two prosecutors and a detective. The unit would work with the police and public.

Zugibe said the unit would work closely with crime victims, such as children, the elderly, and people with developmentally and mental disabilities. The unit would help victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse and rape.

“Special victims unit operate in D.A. offices across the nation,” Zugibe said. “Even before I take office, I want this unit to be started.”

Zugibe said he would name a transition team to evaluate the staff and how the office operates. He said he didn’t know what attorneys would be asked to stay.

“It is premature to say, but I expect there would be changes,” Zugibe said.

He said he wants Ferraro, his law partner of 20 years, to become his second in command, calling him a premier trial attorney.

Ferraro, a defense lawyer and former Bronx prosecutor, said he was considering the offer.

Family remains a focus of Zugibe’s life. The campaign became a family affair - with his wife, brothers, sister, father and mother appearing with him and representing him across the county.

One brother died nearly a year ago. Zugibe said he still hasn’t gotten over the death of Fred Zugibe, the eldest of the six siblings.

Tom Zugibe said his brother, a cardiologist, examined him, but never examined himself.

“He encouraged me to run,” Zugibe said. “The campaign came on and I never really had a chance to grieve his death. Family is the most important thing in life for me.”

Karyl Caplan, the executive director of ARC, which helps people with disabilities, said Zugibe wears his heart on this sleeve. Zugibe has been an ARC board member for 20 years.

“Tom is a very genuine and caring person and he’s very family oriented,” Caplan said. “He’s precise in the way he explains things and he doesn’t shoot from the hip. He has a good sense of humor.”

NEW HAVEN - Members of Masjid Al-Islam, the eyes and ears of the George-Greenwood street block, are celebrating an anniversary.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Jimmy Jones, president of the board of directors of Masjid Al-Islam, said contributing to the welfare of the immediate West River neighborhood has always been an important goal for members.

“Our goal is to make wherever we live a safer, peaceful, family-supporting place for ourselves and everybody who lives with us,” said Jones, chair and associate professor of world religions at Manhattan College in New York, who moved to the immediate neighborhood a decade ago.

Jasper Colleagues:

Just a quick report about last night's get together. Peter Quinn '69 was a hoot. He was charming, self-deprecating, and quite insightful (imho). He was quite frank about the Good, Bad and Ugly of Jaspers, Manhattan College, and the Christian Brother's education.

I'm going to try to get the text of his remarks so I can pull out all the gems. Such as when he faked a book report and the good Brother AQ told him "Mister Quinn, you're full of shit". His life lesson from that was "you have to do the work". And "I wish that Brother AQ was in many of the political meetings with me so he could have dispensed his wisdom to blow hards with fancy degrees." And, "I never felt at a disadvantage with my Manhattan College education."

He had the crowd in stitches as he described his "career of unsuccess".

All in all, to me, it was worth the attention, time and cost.

Of special note, Jaspers are getting much better looking than when I was there.

Cheers,
fjohn68

p.s.: The next NYC meeting is April 10th. If the Intelligent Designer permits, I'm planning to go. Yell, if you want a lift.

Congrats on a great event. Did someone capture Jasper Quinn's speech? I didn't think to bring my audio recorder. If not, can some ask him for his remarks. I can scan them even if they are handwritten. Thanks, fjohn68

John,

Thanks for the nice words and I'm glad you enjoyed the evening.  I asked Peter last night to send them to me (they were typed) and reminded him this morning.  I'll be happy to pass them along when received.  Best,

Thomas A. McCarthy

(No one ever said I wasn't fair. Just a loon. Give credit where credit is due. Last night was a winner. And, I'll be saying that to the ~1500 Jaspers that read Jottings this week. Just like when I beat up on you all, I'll praise you when you exceed my unreasonable expectations.)

Unless you are claiming credit for all the "better looking than I" Jaspers, I give you all the credit. I'll have to give the nod to the Intelligent Designer for the "new and improved" model of Jaspers that the College is turning out. But, then the College has to work with what comes in the front door.

10-4 on the notes; looking forward to them.

Thanks,
fjohn68

John:

Since I am an MC grad who majored in chemistry, your "Manhattan_in_the_News" article "MNEWS: the 'big chilli' is Maria Disavino, a professor of chemistry at Manhattan College" this week caught my attention.

It appears that Prof. Disavino is a chem lab instructor.  See the following link.

Yup, the hunt is on for her pic. I could pin the usage meters if I had it.

Apparently no one does. Which makes it more mysterious how she won?

‘Our Memorials to … Nothing’ and no one
Posted by Tim Sumner under WTC 9/11 memorial, 9/11, World Trade Center

***Begin Quote***

Six years ago today we laid Joe Leavey to rest on what would have been his 46th birthday. He was a loving husband and father, a loyal son, and the younger brother of three sisters who admired the fine man they had watched him grow to be. I first met Joe in 1977 soon after he graduated with a degree in engineering from Manhattan College; Patty, my wife of 29 years, is the youngest of those three sisters.

FDNY Lieutenant Joseph G. Leavey is also a 9/11 hero who led four Ladder 15 firefighters to the 78th floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower, fought fire, struggled to reach those trapped above, and died so that others might live.

While my family will long remember, the national memorial that is to bear his name will depict nothing of his sacrifice. It will be surrounded by trees and running water will flow beneath where 3,000 names are etched into metal. Yet not one ounce of the millions of tons of the World Trade Center’s steel will be used to create the memorial and there are no plans to display the artifacts close by.

Nothing depicting the heroism or carnage of 9/11 will be above ground at Ground Zero — and no American flag will fly over where American heroes fell. Not far away, they will bury a museum and a turning point in history.

It is with that knowledge that I must agree with Duncan Maxwell Anderson’s assessment of our memorials.

Man Gets 5 Months for Killing Ostrich
Oct 5, 9:37 PM (ET)

*** begin quote ***

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to five months in jail and three years probation for killing an ostrich in San Mateo County.

Timothy McKevitt will also have to pay $5,000 in restitution for killing Gaylord the ostrich.

Authorities say McKevitt and his friend Jonathan Porter and a few others were drinking on Halloween last year and decided to trespass on a ranch.

Gaylord the ostrich apparently grew incensed and attacked and injured both men.

Porter and McKevitt later returned to the ranch with a rifle and shotgun and killed Gaylord.

Porter has already served a sentence of five months.

*** end quote ***

Too bad, Gaylord, didn’t kick their butts. Five months! Rifle AND a shotgun. Drinking!

How did they get to the farm with their weapons?

Drunk driving and packin in a car – both have to be against the law in the Pepuls Republik of Kalleyforney

Poor Gaylord.

I just shake my head and wonder what kind of humans we are growin these days.

What’s the penalty for killing an unborn baby?

And that’s the last word.
