Under the heading of "Great love hath no man", one has to admire that type of physical courage. One has to either be very comfortable in the own skin, or slightly nuts. Maybe a mix of both. I hope all my opportunities and challenges are much much smaller. So I'm not found wanting. My fellow alums, I'm sure, can handle the biggest ones!

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Dear John,

John Manley was buried today. I understand that there was an Obit in the Westchester paper (The Journal News) and the NY Daly News but neither mentioned his Manhattan Connection. I have not been able to put my hand on either one. I thought that maybe you might be able to.

Rudy in the running;
Giuliani forms committee looking into viability of a run for president in 2008, ahead of McCain
BYLINE: BY GLENN THRUSH. NEWSDAY WASHINGTON BUREAU
SECTION: NEWS; Pg. A02

WASHINGTON - Rudolph Giuliani has taken a giant first step toward a 2008 White House run, creating an exploratory committee and beating his pal John McCain to the punch in filing presidential paperwork.

The sharp-elbowed former mayor registered the Rudy Giuliani Presidential Exploratory Committee Inc. on Friday with the New York Secretary of State's office. That just happened to be the day McCain signaled publicly that he wanted to set up a similar organization for his campaign.

Giuliani's committee is a test-the-waters exercise, but it's the strongest sign yet that the socially-liberal, Democrat-turned-Republican will challenge the Arizona senator in the conservative GOP primaries.

"Mayor Giuliani has not made a decision yet," his campaign treasurer John Gross said in an e-mail to reporters yesterday. Giuliani aide Anthony Carbonetti said Republicans around the country "have been encouraging him to run for president and this filing affords him the opportunity to raise money and put together an organization."

McCain's camp declined to comment.

By filing with the State of New York, Giuliani dodges the strict requirements of a federally registered committee.

The former mayor's move didn't come as a surprise, considering he'd been stumping for dozens of GOP Senate and House candidates, including hopefuls in the key primary states of New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina.

If Giuliani runs and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton throws her hat into the ring, the stage would be set for a rematch of the 2000 Senate showdown scrubbed when Giuliani withdrew to battle prostate cancer and deal with his divorce from Donna Hanover.

Giuliani and McCain are buddies who often hold court over plates of pasta during Manhattan chat-and-chews, but they are starting to give each other heartburn. The two are locked neck and neck atop Republican presidential polls; Clinton is the Democratic front-runner.

Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), who first met Giuliani 40 years ago when both were young lawyers at the same Manhattan law firm, urged his friend to go all the way.

"This is a very positive step," King said. "Rudy would be an outstanding candidate and, more importantly, an outstanding president. I certainly hope he decides to run."

Despite the excitement a Giuliani candidacy generates in his hometown, the 9/11 veteran faces serious hurdles as he courts the GOP heartland. He's an abortion rights advocate who supports gay rights and gun control, an urbanite on his party's left fringe. GOP primary voters are disproportionately abortion foes, against granting gay partners couples rights, and don't like restrictions on gun ownership.

"Rudy Giuliani is going to need to a lot of exploring to find enough conservative votes," GOP political consultant Nelson Warfield joked.

After being painted as a liberal by George W. Bush in the 2000 primaries, McCain has sought to prove his right-wing bona fides, recently visiting Jerry Falwell's university and emphatically describing himself as a "conservative" during an Election Night interview with CNN's Larry King.

Giuliani's Friday filing opened a new chapter in the Giuliani-McCain rivalry. Giuliani's paperwork was filed by Bobby Burchfield, a Washington lawyer who unsuccessfully tried to overturn the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law in the Supreme Court.

1944 Born to a second-generation Italian family in Brooklyn.

1961 Graduated from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, Brooklyn.

1965 Graduated from Manhattan College.

1968 Graduated from New York University law school and started his legal career as a law clerk for a federal district judge.

1983 Settled in New York as U.S. attorney for the Southern District, where he eventually won high-profile cases against organized crime and inside traders.

1989 Lost to David Dinkins in a hotly contested race for mayor that was filled with racial strife.

1993 Giuliani beat Dinkins despite a law-and-order approach that turned off many New Yorkers.

1994-2001 Presided over historic drop in city's crime and some high-profile shootings of innocent suspects.

1997 Won a resounding re-election victory against Democrat Ruth Messinger.

2000 Considered a run for the U.S. Senate against Hillary Rodham Clinton, but ended it while battling prostate cancer and a divorce from his second wife, Donna Hanover.

2001 Term-limited mayor became "America's Mayor" and Time magazine's Person of the Year after his handling of the World Trade Center attacks.

Young Voter Participation Increasing Steadily

With the recently passed midterm elections, which brought about major changes in Washington, the questions now turn to voter turnout. The most recent presidential election saw 47% of 18-24 year-olds voting, an 11% increase from the 2000 election. While presidential elections tend to draw more voters to the polls, this increase reveals that the youngest set of voters are growing more politically active than they have been in decades.

Activism Is Not Exclusive

The United Nations has reported 400,000 men, women, and children have been killed in the Darfur conflict. A further 2.5 million have been displaced from their homes. Ignoring this problem is not something a person with a conscience, can do. When the world neglected the situation of the Jewish people during World War II, 6 million people died-all in the name of "ethnic cleansing.

A Glimpse into the Creative Mind of an MC Poet

Lara Longo never wanted to play house when she was young. "I was the kid that wanted to write plays and act them out," said senior Lara Longo, an experienced writer and performer. Longo is known in the Manhattan community as a poet and short story writer who often performs her work at coffeehouses and Manhattan Magazine's Po'Jazz at the Cornelia Street Cafe.

Jaspers Finish the Pre-Season Strong; Lose Season Opener in a Heart Breaker

In the Jaspers last pre-season game they were able to beat New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), 62-58. However, they could not beat another Institute of Technology, as they lost to NJIT in their season, and home opener. Before the Jaspers played NJIT, they played an exhibition game against NYIT.

Please, feel free to add me to your list.  My stay shouldn't be too long though, I'll be moving back to the states in June of next year.  Take care!

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I wasn't sure whether I wanted to ignore it so I could pretend I wasn't another year older....or celebrate it. I think I am ready to celebrate it....unfortunately I am in the office.  Jim

I received an email from you regarding joining so I responded.  My connection to Manhattan College is that I graduated in 1995 with a BS in Marketing and Management and would like to network and connect with fellow graduates.  My name is Joseph Postighone.  I don't know what else you need.

Nope, that's it. I just didn't know your email address. The MCALUM site just forwards the email. Thanks, Fjohn68

Jasper JohnH,

I liked the thoughts expressed. But at a half a meg, that's just too heavy for most people's email boxes. I'd suggest that you open a google page account and put it up there. And, then send the link around. I can coach you how to do it. I don't have a half a meg of spare space idle; nor the time to do it for you. After putting it up, you just email the link. With all the cyber-crud around, most people won't play with strange files.

FWIW,
Fjohn

Dear Mildred and Jim,

Thanks for your message. I can't imagine the journey that you're on. All I can say is I am sorry for your loss.

I reported the Obit as you can by following this link.

http://www.jasperjottings.com/2006/jasperjottings20061112.htm#_JObit2

My pages stay up "for a while". I have about six years online now. (Space is very cheap. Even if my content isn't very good or unique.) So if any of Kenneth's classmates refer to it, I'll pass the message along for you to enjoy as well.

From the entries in the Guest Book, I'm sorry I never got to meet him in person. I could have learned a lot. Clearly, he reflects well on your parenting.

Best wishes,
Fjohn

Dear CIC,

I would like to invite any Jaspers who are interested, especially those living in Brooklyn and Queens, to a peaceful Prayer Vigil for Life on November 18,2006.  The Vigil will begin with a 7:30 am Mass offered by retired Bishop of Brooklyn Thomas V. Daily at St. Patrick's Church, 39-28 28th Street, Long Island City, New York 11101.  After Mass we will pray in front of Choices abortion mill, approximately 3 blocks from the Church.

Light refreshments are available after the vigil.  If anyone is interested more information is available at www.helpersbrooklynny.org.

                     Thank you,

Dear John,

You missed a very enjoyable evening with a large group of Jaspers. They ranged from students to some "old Timers" and there was a chance for all to mingle. The taped remarks by Tom O'Malley, '63, the Chair of the Board of Trustees were well received. His vision for the future of Manhattan is most encouraging. The libations were plentiful and the setting was magnificent. My brother Ed was my chauffeur so I was not inhibited in any way!

Maybe we will get you there next time!

                                              Best,
                                                 Mike McEneney, Esq. '53

{JR:  Sigh. Sure when I come no one puts on the proverbial lampshade. As an introvert injineer, I have to keep my fingers to the keyboard pushing Jasper Jottings around the globe. Besides I don't have any "show for". Maybe when I'm as "mature" as you, the Intelligent Designer will give me a brother to "show for" me around.  }

Ziggs harvested all the public personal pages as a search engine would. Using their free offering, I have identified ~700 possible Jaspers from it. I'm planning to share 10 "found on Ziggs" Jaspers each week in the coming weeks. The first group moves in this week's issue. I don't like to overwhelm the readership with too much of anything. Besides "harvesting" takes a lot of time. And, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!

{No time. No volunteers. So I hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time.}

Fonts of Jaspers

Here are sites where "there be Jaspers there". I have no "extra" time to go thru the site, extract the Jaspers, post them in the weekly Jottings, let them know Jasper Jottings exists, and invite them to read it. I have had no volunteers. (Depressing!) So I am logging them here and hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time. I'm listing the sources to hopefully "guilt" someone into helping. Besides while I know that "harvesting" takes a lot of time, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!
