Manhattan College To Host Talk By Itamar Marcus, Director, Palestinian Media Watch

Marcus to present evidence of indoctrination of children to jihad martyrdom

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College will host a talk by Itamar Marcus, director of the Palestinian Media Watch, on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 215 of the Leo Engineering building. The event is free and open to the public.

The Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) is a world-renowned organization that monitors Palestinian media and schoolbooks. Marcus, who has testified before the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, will present evidence of indoctrination of children to the jihad martyrdom of hatred and suicide bombing.

Founded in 1996, the PMW documents and compares what the Palestinian Authority (PA) leadership conveys to the Western world with the actual translation of the messages in Arabic. The audience will watch real footage of PA news programs, and Marcus will demonstrate how Palestinian media falsifies news clips including the bombing at Gaza Beach.

For more information about this event, please contact Margaret Groarke, assistant professor of government at Manhattan College, at 718-862-7943 or {privacy invoked} . Members of the media who would like to cover the talk can call Scott Silversten at 718 862-7232 or e-mail {privacy invoked} .

Larchmont's Effinger brings hockey expertise to Rangers
By SAM WEINMAN THE JOURNAL NEWS
Powered by Topix.net

(Original publication: November 4, 2006)

Every scout longs for their diamond-in-the-rough story, and Frank Effinger has a pretty good one.

It was several years ago, when the Larchmont resident was a scout for the Minnesota Wild, and he was asked by the team's general manager, Doug Risebrough, if there was a goalie the team should pursue.

Effinger considered the dozens of goalies he had studied in recent years, and provided the name of Dwayne Roloson, a veteran in the St. Louis organization who at the time was languishing in the minor leagues. The Wild heeded Effinger's advice, signing Roloson as a free agent in the summer of 2001.

Three years after that, Roloson was playing in the NHL All-Star Game.

"We were at a reception at the Metrodome and he came out, and he brought his wife over, and I introduced him to (Effinger's current wife) Kristen," Effinger recalled. "And he said to Kristen, 'If it wasn't for Frank, I wouldn't be in the NHL.' That was really special."

When the Rangers lured Effinger away from the Wild prior to this season, this was exactly what they had in mind. The 54-year-old Effinger has worked at every level of hockey - from pre-dawn clinics with mites to prime-time games scouting the best players in the world. For years, while teaching and running the field house at Rye Country Day School, he coached the varsities there and at Iona College, in a workday that began in early morning and ended after midnight. Few men have seen as much hockey as Effinger has over the past four decades. And fortunately for the Rangers, few men relish the opportunity to see even more.

"I'm one of the few people in life who's never gone to work, and I've always been so fortunate in that I've realized that," Effinger said. "Just being around the game and being around good people. I used to go to school and play with the kids. Now I go to to hockey games."

It would seem to be an idyllic existence, but hardly one in which Effinger is a mere spectator. The scouting system in hockey is a complex machine, with players evaluated at every juncture, and with millions of dollars often on the line. In his role scouting the Northeast for the Rangers, Effinger helps compile information on every player in the NHL - in part to know who to go after, in part to know who to avoid. Moreover, Effinger has also proven to be an asset in helping the Rangers' coaching staff prepare for specific opponents.

"I've always respected Frank's analytical eye for the game," said Rangers assistant GM Don Maloney. "He's more than just a scout, he's an important part of our hockey operation."

Said Rangers coach Tom Renney: "He's got a terrific hockey mind. He really knows the players."

All this from someone whose own hockey career extended no further than the Manhattan College club team; and who in this area, as head of the Rye Rangers youth hockey program, might still be better known for teaching hundreds of 6-year-olds the art of the wrist shot. But it was through his work coaching hockey at the local level that Effinger would forge the connections that eventually brought him to the NHL. While coaching at Iona and at RCDS in 1980, Effinger was asked to oversee a hockey school in Switzerland alongside Dave and Don Maloney, both of whom were in the midst of celebrated careers as Rangers. Before long the trio had come up with the idea of running their own hockey school in New York. The brainstorm became the Maloney Brothers Hockey School, which was run out of the Harvey School in Katonah for 21 years.

Meanwhile, Effinger was busy compiling an impressive record over his 11 years at Iona, enough to start drawing attention from bigger programs. But at the time, the coach had his reasons to stay where he was. It was in 1983 that his wife, Maria, was first diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, a condition deemed so serious the Effingers were told Maria didn't have long to live. She proved otherwise, fighting for 14 years before her death in 1997.

"We were never apart. I wouldn't have taken another job if she was still there because we didn't have that much time together," said Effinger, who married his second wife, Kristen, in 2005. "But that's when I learned one door closes in life, and another door opens."

Before Maria's death Effinger had already taken on some part-time scouting work with the Buffalo Sabres, but in 1999, he was contacted by Risebrough about a full-time position with the expansion Wild.

Because he had already committed to another year at RCDS, Effinger insisted on working only part-time the first season, but then joined the franchise full-time for its inaugural season in 2000-01. It didn't take him long to make an impression. On the eve of the Wild's home opener against the Flyers, the team's video equipment had broken down and the coaching staff was unable to review film of their opponent. Enter Effinger, who had already seen Philadelphia a handful of times, and who quickly put together a scouting report for Wild coach Jacques Lemaire. When the Wild secured an unlikely tie against the Flyers, Lemaire pulled Effinger aside.

"They did all that stuff you said they were going to do," Lemaire said.

Such is Effinger's keen understanding of the game, a byproduct of an unparalleled work ethic. Whereas Effinger once was coaching at all hours of the day between RCDS, Iona, and the Rye Rangers (where he still volunteers his time), he now watches countless games around the area and beyond. He is at Nassau Coliseum one night, Hartford the next, then Philadelphia the night after that. Next week he heads to Finland to scout prospects at a junior tournament.

To have that responsibility with the Wild, where he helped steer the franchise out of its infancy, was one thrill. But an opportunity with the Rangers, whom he followed as a kid on Long Island, was another.

"I wasn't the one who took off school to stand in line for playoff tickets," he said with a smile. "It was a friend of mine because he was a better student."

Now, though, after Maloney helped bring him over from the Wild, Effinger is among those instrumental in helping the Rangers get back to the postseason. In some ways, he may be too instrumental. While his primary role is to evaluate talent, Renney admits he has leaned on Effinger to prepare scouting reports for upcoming Rangers opponents.

"The big thing is I can't be a distraction from Frank's scouting job evaluating players," Renney said. "But at the same time I value his opinion in what he sees in a team. He understands the game so well that I have the confidence to say, 'Frank, what's so and so doing on this? Is there anything we can exploit?' And he'll have it."

To be such an integral part of one of the game's most prestigious franchises, you'd think Effinger would have graduated from his humble beginnings. But he hasn't. The plan for this morning was to conduct another mite clinic for the Rye Rangers.

As a scout, you never stop looking for talent.

Meet Your Neighbor: Councilor's life filled with service, building and baseball memories
By Daniel Winningham
11/09/2006

Marco Island City Councilman Mike Minozzi sits in his office.

Community involvement and volunteerism, however, is only part of his story.

To say Marco Island City Council member Mike Minozzi is heavily involved in the community would be quite an understatement.

A full-time island resident since 1993, Minozzi has devoted much of his later years in life to serving others and volunteering with various organizations.

"I've been treated very well in life and I always felt that I want to give back," he said.

About 10 years ago, Minozzi got his first involvement with politics when he served as the treasurer of the island's fire commission.

In addition to the City Council and the fire commission, Minozzi's service has included the Marco Island Rotary Club, the island's Italian-American Club, director for the Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce and Marco Island YMCA, involvement with the Knights of Columbus and representing the city for the Marco Island Council for the Arts. He currently serves as the treasurer of the Marco Island Eradicate Amblyopia Foundation.

"I want to do what I can for my neighbors," he said. "I love the place that I live and I want to do everything I can to be of service to them."

Minozzi also enjoys helping out at San Marco Catholic Church, spending time on several church committees and contributing his time to countless church projects.

Born and raised in Hastings-on-Hudson, a northern New York City suburb, Minozzi is one of 14 siblings. He lettered in baseball, basketball, football and track in high school and received the top craftsman award for his graduating class.

Building remains one of Minozzi's greatest loves. He designed his home and has constructed several pieces of furniture for his retirement haven, including a massive entertainment center.

When asked why he didn't go into architecture, Minozzi said building projects commericially would take too much time and that he would have never earned a living.

After finishing high school, it was on to more schooling. He graduated from Manhattan College in New York with a degree in management and finance. He didn't put his financial skills to work after he completed college, though. Minozzi made a living working with a family memorial business.

The councilor said finances and investments always interested him, and he has devoted more than 35 years of his life to that line of work. The firms he was employed by included First Investors Corporation, Putnam Investor Services and The Investment Center.

"My job was to train people in the field of financial planning," Minozzi said of his role with First Investors Corporation, where he started in 1968.

During his time with Putnam, Minozzi served as the investment firm's vice president of marketing. He trained thousands of stockbrokers and helped them use mutual funds for financial planning.

So just how did Minozzi end up on Marco Island? It was an event that took place in 1987 that attracted Minozzi and his wife, Lynne, to Florida's "Last Paradise." A former classmate and friend was living on the island and suggested holding a class reunion on Marco.

The Minozzi's traveled to Marco and stayed at the Marriott for the reunion. Not usually accustomed to making quick decisions, he didn't pass up the opportunity to purchase property here.

"We loved it so much that that weekend, we bought a condo," he said. "I don't usually make rash moves like that, but we just fell in love with Marco,"

The couple vacationed to the island for a few years before becoming permanent residents back in 1993.

Growing up close to the Bronx, Minozzi was a die-hard New York Yankees fan and continues to cheer for the Bronx Bombers.

"I've been a passionate Yankee fan since I was a child," he noted.

Many great players have been a part of the Yankees organization over the years, but to him one sticks out above the rest.

"My all-time favorite player was Mickey Mantle," he said. "I emulated Mickey Mantle growing up. I always made it my business to get number seven."

While New York is a long haul from Marco Island, modern inventions such as cable television and the Internet help him keep track of the team's current progress.

"I watch every game I possibly can," said Minozzi, who had season tickets for many years during the '70s and '80s. "In fact, I'm getting the local New York radio station on my computer, so when I'm working on the computer, I'm listening to the Yankee game.

There have been plenty of great times spent cheering on the Yankees in the Bronx, Minozzi said. His best memory at Yankee Stadium was watching Reggie Jackson hit three home runs in Game 6 of the 1977 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"That was probably one of the most exciting things I've ever witnessed," Minozzi said. "The crowd just went wild."

The Yankees won the game 8-4 and the series, their second consecutive title. Jackson was named the series' Most Valuable Player.

He has passed on his love for Yankees baseball on to other family members, too.

"All of my children and all of my grandchildren are very, very staunch Yankee fans," he said.

Minozzi and his wife have been married for 25 years. Together they have five children and 10 grandchildren. Three of his children live in the New York area while two live in Chapel Hill, NC.

He also played a big role in helping youngsters in the New York area grow up enjoying baseball like he did.

While still living in the New York area, Minozzi spent 13 years as the president of the New York City Little League. During his tenure, he oversaw large increases in enrollment and organized an effort to construct a baseball complex complete with two fields, a snack bar and an announcer's booth.

Not quite Yankee Stadium, but still something Minozzi is quite proud of.

The Mick would've liked it, too.

GOP Approaches Elections with Differing Strategies

Yesterday's elections came as a culmination of a strange, if not schizophrenic battle strategy for Republicans. Many of the forerunners that brought the party into power over 12 years ago found themselves in scandalous quagmires, and the souring of public opinion on the Iraq war also made this midterm election cycle into one that had the Democrats vying for control of the House of Representatives, and put the Republicans on the defensive.

Riverdale Residents Should Not Judge All Manhattan Students

Manhattan College students have been receiving a lot of negative attention lately from the Riverdale residents. Recently, The Riverdale Press reported that Manhattan College students were involved in incidents of vandalism around the neighborhood. Although the reports turned out to be true, it is not fair for the Riverdale community to attack the whole Manhattan College community for the actions of a select few.

John,

I have been enjoying Jasper Jottings at {privacy invoked} since soon after you began its distribution.  I want to change the email address I receive the jottings at.  Please send future jottings to {privacy invoked}.  I graduated MC in 1985.  My maiden name was Lynch.

Jim:

Done.

Nah, I'm a introvert. ;-) And, swamped with a ton of extra tasks right now.  When I've gone in the past, I haven't found it "worth the effort" in terms of the investment of time, attention, and expense. Right now, I have so many "spinning plates", I rally can't spare the time.

But, you'll have Mike McE there. He can tell everyone how he "knows" this weirdo who has this thing called an ezine that he's been shoving every week into Jasper email boxes for the last 8 years. (Argh, has it been that long!)

And, they too can get it. (If he charges, let me know. I want my cut!) :-)

By the way, if you'd like, you can have a weekly column in the ezine if you want it. We can call it "From The Big Jasper's Desk". Or, the "Head-die Topics". OR, something like that. Whatever you want. The only thing you need to know is that on Wednesday nights I freeze the issue's content for the email push on Saturday night.

Advise,
Fjohn68

{JR: I've been putting in an entry since these Gust Books have become popular. Maybe it gives someone some solace that there not alone. It would be "good" if people see that good people have big impacts. In reading some of the guest books, I see great people that I never had the chance to know. It makes me sad. But, in a way, it's inspiring.  }

ZFound (Jaspers Found on Ziggs) http://www.ziggs.com

Ziggs harvested all the public personal pages as a search engine would. Using their free offering, I have identified ~700 possible Jaspers from it. I'm planning to share 10 "found on Ziggs" Jaspers each week in the coming weeks. The first group moves in this week's issue. I don't like to overwhelm the readership with too much of anything. Besides "harvesting" takes a lot of time. And, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!

{No time. No volunteers. So I hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time.}

Fonts of Jaspers

Here are sites where "there be Jaspers there". I have no "extra" time to go thru the site, extract the Jaspers, post them in the weekly Jottings, let them know Jasper Jottings exists, and invite them to read it. I have had no volunteers. (Depressing!) So I am logging them here and hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time. I'm listing the sources to hopefully "guilt" someone into helping. Besides while I know that "harvesting" takes a lot of time, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!
