Runaway circus kangaroo on the loose in Ireland
Wed Jul 19, 2006 12:25pm ET171

***Begin Quote***

DUBLIN (Reuters) - A kangaroo is roaming the green hills of Ireland after escaping a circus near the picturesque port of Kinsale.

***AND***

There had since been one unconfirmed sighting of the animal, renamed "Hoppy" by locals and described as two and a half to three feet tall and dark in color.

***End Quote***

There’s just something funny about the vision of a Roo running over Erin. The Intelligent Designer must have a sense of humor. Now if Hoppy could get a friend, then maybe they could replace lamb in the Irish Stew.

I don’t know why but this just makes me chuckle. Maybe I’m just punchy from the heat.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Obituary: Dr. Fidone was trailblazer for medical services at state school

Web Posted: 07/27/2006 08:56 PM CDT

Carmina Danini Express-News Staff Writer

Dr. George Salvatore Fidone, first medical director of the San Antonio State School and a former chief of the pediatric clinic at Wilford Hall Medical Center, died Tuesday at the age of 76.

The retired Air Force colonel had melanoma, said Dr. George Fidone, a Lufkin pediatrician and one of his five children.

A private interment in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will be held today after a 9:30 a.m. service at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home at 6321 Bandera Road.

Former colleagues at the state school remembered him fondly.

"A fine physician, he taught me a lot of things about mental retardation," said Dr. Terresa Stallworth, clinical director at the school, which provides residential and community services to people with mental disabilities.

Annie Posey, his administrative assistant from 1980 until 1997, said Fidone brought the first 60 patients from Austin when the school opened in 1978.

Fidone implemented services such as the physicians, including neurologists, podiatrists, orthopedists and gynecologists, who visit patients each month.

"He was the foundation for what the state school is now," Posey said.

Dr. George Fidone said his father had been invited to speak at an international scientific meeting in Scotland this summer regarding work he had done two decades earlier but was unable to because of his illness.

His father was one of the first to identify what could happen to children incapable of appropriate response when physical force is used to restrain them.

"He noted that any restraint, particularly a basket hold, could lead to suffocation because a child can't say, 'Hey, I can't breathe,'" his son said.

"He was certainly an advocate for the mentally and physically impaired who couldn't speak."

Born in New York City, Fidone graduated from Manhattan College and received his medical degree from the New York University Medical School.

After serving as a Navy flight surgeon, he did his pediatric residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He was in charge of an Air Force pediatric hospital in Florida before coming to Wilford Hall in 1966.

The Helotes resident was at Wilford Hall until he retired from the Air Force in 1978.

Other survivors include his wife, Jackie, whom he married in 1956; three other sons, David Fidone of McKinney, Robert Fidone of Helotes and Dr. Jeffrey Fidone of Tyler; a daughter, Kim Rowland of Denver; a brother, Dr. Salvatore Fidone of Salt Lake City; and 13 grandchildren.

From: Angela M. Guerriero (Lynch) - Class of 1985
Sent: Tuesday, August 01, 2006 9:48 AM
Subject: Obituary

John,

My mother, Dr. Mary E. Lynch passed away on Sunday, July 30th after a tough battle with cancer.  Always the figher, they predicted she would have six months to live and she made it to four years.  Manhattan has played a prominent role in my family.  My mother loved her time at MC.  Other than my mother's role at Manhattan, my grandfather taught engineering, my father graduated in '42 and '44 and seven out of nine of us were graduates of Manhattan College.  I have enclosed her obituary that appeared in the Journal News today for distribution in the Jottings.

Thank you,
Angela M. Guerriero (Lynch)
Class of 1985

Mary Emeline Lynch, of South Salem, New York, died on July 30, 2006 at Waterview Hills Nursing Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born on May 29, 1925 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Captain John Joseph Twomey and Emeline Malone Twomey. Throughout her childhood, she lived in many parts of the country, depending on where her father, a Navy Captain, was stationed. Her favorite places were Long Beach and San Diego, California and Marblehead, Massachusetts. The family eventually settled in New Rochelle, New York. Dr. Lynch graduated from The College of New Rochelle in 1945 with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, and earned a Master's Degree and Ph.D. from Fordham University. She spent many years working in medical research and was a graduate of the Radiological Institute as a Radiation Biologist. She did postgraduate work for two summers in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, work that was sponsored by the US Atomic Energy Commission. She was the US delegate to the first International Congress on Technology Assessment, and received many National Science Foundation grants. She published 23 papers on biology and audio-tutorial learning, as well as numerous laboratory manuals and textbook chapters. She is listed in the Who's Who of American Women, Outstanding Educators of America, and The Who's Who of International Biology, among others. She was a member for over 50 years of the New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Lynch also held a Master's Degree in Media Studies from The New School of Social Research and received an MBA in 1982 from Manhattan College. Dr. Lynch was Professor Emeritus in Biology, and taught for over 10 years in the Biology Department at Manhattan College in Riverdale. In 1976, she became the first woman Dean at Manhattan. She was the Chairperson of the Medical Schools Selection Committee for many years, and retired as Director of HEOP. She was a member of the Research and Science Honor Society, Sigma Xi, and of Delta Mu Delta, the Business Administrators Honor Society. In the early 1970's, Dr. Lynch joined the Civil Air Patrol, a branch of the United States Air Force. She served as Director of the Northeast Region Staff College for almost 25 years, and earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She was also an Honorary Chaplain. She was extremely active in the Civil Air Patrol until she became ill in 2002. She was cofounder of the United States Service Command and was a Major General in charge of Science and Technology. Dr. Lynch participated in many reunions of the surviving crewmembers and the families of her father's Navy ship, The Chemung. She enjoyed traveling to California, Hawaii, Cape May, NJ, and Swampscott, Massachusetts. She was a judge in the John Jay High School Science Fair and embroidered baptismal stoles for St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Ridgefield, Connecticut. During the 1960's and '70's, she was a volunteer telephone dispatcher for the South Salem Fire Department. Dr. Lynch met her future husband, William F. Lynch, Jr., May 2, 1943, when he asked her for a dance at the Waldorf-Astoria in NYC. They were married on November 24, 1949, and settled in Brooklyn. In 1953, they moved to Truesdale Lake and later to a house they built on Route 35 in South Salem. Dr. Lynch is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, William F. Lynch, Jr., and nine children: Mary Clare of the Bronx, William III (Lauren) of Towson, MD, John of Dover, NY, Michael (Sy) of South Salem, Margaret (Nathan) Solano of Huntingdon Valley, PA, Adele of San Diego, CA, Laura Lynch (Glen Simpson) of Sharon Springs, NY, Diane of Stony Brook, LI, and Angela (Joseph) Guerriero of Bethel, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's RC Church, Ridgefield, CT on Thursday @ 10:15 am. Interment is at the South Salem Cemetery on Spring Street in South Salem. Everyone is asked to join the family for a reception in Dr. Lynch's honor at the South Salem Fire Department on Route 35 following her burial. Donations may be made in Dr. Lynchs' name to The South Salem Fire Department, or to a charity of choice. CLARK ASSOCIATES FUNERAL HOME 4 Woods Bridge Rd. Katonah 914-232-3033

{JR:  Dear Ms. Angela, Thanks for sending the obit. I'll move in next Sunday's issue. Nothing I can say would make it all better. I know from my wife, who's Mom died at a very young age, that there's a special bond between a girl and her Mom and that the loss always hurts. My Mom is traveling a similar road, as will we all. Your Mom was truly a "Mother of Jaspers". MC does become like a extension of family. As a pro-life Libertarian, I believe that we fulfill a mission even in our last days. We have the ability, by allowing people to help, sympathize, laugh, and cry, to express the value of human life. And the indomitable human spirit of courage. I'm sure that the extra time was very valuable to everyone. Tonight, in my prayers, for peace, I'll add an extra for you, your Mom, your immediate family, and our extended family of Jaspers, and the world in general. We are all diminished when we lose a member of the human family. Especially one so accomplished. Wish I had known her. Heck, I wish I had her as a Prof, I had too many Ds and could have used a friendly grader. I'm sure she'd have been impressed that I was going to exchange emails with her daughter in the future. I guess I have seen the movie "Back to the Future" too many times. People do call me an anachronism and a throwback, but I don't think "Neanderthal" quite fits. In any event, I am sorry to receive this news, but I am pleased you shared her story with us. Fjohn }

Larchmont's Effinger joins Rangers' staff
By JOE LOMBARDI - THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original Publication: August 1, 2006)

When Larchmont's Frank Effinger first started working alongside Don Maloney at the Maloney Brothers Hockey School in Katonah 27 years ago, he had no idea that the relationship forged would eventually lead to his landing a job with the Rangers.

But that's exactly what happened as Maloney, the Rangers' assistant general manager, asked Effinger, who has spent the last seven years as a professional scout with the Minnesota Wild, if he would be interested in accepting a similar post with the Rangers.

The answer was a resounding yes, and Effinger's appointment was announced yesterday.

"It's a real thrill for someone born in Throgs Neck, who went to the last game at the old Garden, and who was in the stands when the Rangers won the Cup in 1994," Effinger said.

Effinger, who went 184-66-5 as Iona coach from 1979-90 to earn a spot in the college's Sports Hall of Fame, also coached hockey and lacrosse at Rye Country Day from 1974-99. In 1998, he joined the Wild after working as a part-time scout for the Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks. He left a physical-education teaching position at RCDS to become a full-time scout with the Wild six years ago.

"With the Wild, we had a good run that started the year before the Wild hit the ice," the 54-year-old Effinger said. "I enjoyed helping them put the team together."

Effinger is anxious to make his mark on the Rangers.

"It's like coming back home," said Effinger, a 20-year Larchmont resident and a Manhattan College graduate.

Effinger, who was the Wild's Eastern scout, is looking forward to having more varied responsibilities with the Rangers.

"One of the things that attracted me to the Rangers' position is that I can be used in a lot of different ways," Effinger said. "Don's already talked about going to Europe a couple of times."

Effinger said that being so close to both the Rangers and their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, should give him "the flexibility to do different things."

He's already gotten started.

"Don and I have spent some time going over different teams and rosters," he said. "We've hit the ground running."

Don't expect Effinger to let up any time soon.

"There's 30 (NHL) teams," he said. "Everyone's looking for players."

{MikeMcE reports:  I believe that Frank is a member of the Class of 1974.   (Thanks, Mike.) }

Miller Heading for Hall of Fame
Sunday, July 11, 2004
By Harold Guttman - The Journal News

Before spin was a public-relations term, there was Bill Miller, and his attempts to create positive publicity for Manhattan College out of one of the biggest scandals in college basketball history.

A Pearl River resident and 1948 Manhattan graduate, Miller was the Jaspers' first sports information director. When a gambling scandal hit the Riverdale campus in 1951, he became the envy of any current spin doctor. It would also serve as an example of Miller's support and dedication to Jaspers athletics and make him one of eight inductees elected last month to the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame.

The game-fixing scandal that enveloped a handful of New York-area college basketball teams most famously the 1950 NCAA and NIT champion City College came to Manhattan College when two ex-Jaspers' captains tried to get first-year player Junius Kellogg to throw a game for $1,000.

Kellogg seemed like a well-picked target. He was talented, and the 6-foot-8 star center was one of 11 siblings in a poor family. But instead of taking the money, Kellogg told the school hierarchy and the Manhattan district attorney about the offer.

When the story broke, the city's afternoon dailies focused on how the Manhattan program was tainted with gambling money. The morning papers were about to pile on until Miller, in his recently created position of sports information director, hit the phones.

"You don't want the same story the afternoon papers have, here's the story put the emphasis on Junius Kellogg," Miller told the New York Times, the Daily News, the Daily Mirror, the Herald Tribune and others.

Miller said that Kellogg, the team's first black player, should be admired for standing up to the gamblers; Kellogg's efforts, which included recording his conversations with the dirty Manhattan alums, led to widespread efforts to clean up the sport.

"(Miller) was instrumental in pointing out the courage of Junius Kellogg," said George Skau, head of the Hall of Fame Committee. "He's always been prominently in the forefront of promoting Manhattan athletics."

Miller went to La Salle Academy in Manhattan, where he won the quarter mile at the CHSAA Sectional Championships. He went to Manhattan on a track scholarship, but was called up to serve in the Army Air Corps Reserve toward the end of his freshman year.

After two years of service in the South Pacific and Asia, Miller used the G.I. Bill, which paid the tuition of veterans, to go back to Manhattan without needing an athletic scholarship to support his education.

"I didn't have to worry about money then, so I concentrated on what I was going to do after college," Miller said. "That's when I turned to the newspaper."

Miller became the sports editor of the campus newspaper, the Quadrangle, for two years, and the power of his writing quickly became apparent.

Manhattan planned to drop crew for financial reasons. The college eliminated its Division I football squad after World War II, but Miller's advocacy for crew helped save that program from a similar fate.

"It was one of the few times they take seriously what a guy with a sports column does," Miller said.

Miller is best known in the local track and field community as a sports writer for the New York Times, where Miller has worked continuously for 57 years. He is a recent recipient of the prestigious Jesse Abramson Award, given at the Penn Relays for outstanding reporting on track and field.

Clearing the air: Marriott heralds smoking ban as new level of service
Tuesday, July 25, 2006
By L.A. Johnson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Last week, Marriott International Inc. announced that all 2,300 of its U.S. and Canadian properties -- representing 400,000 guest rooms -- will be 100 percent smoke-free beginning in September. ...  Smoking areas will be established outside and a distance away from Marriott properties....

Smokers rights groups believe smokers are as entitled to hotel accommodations as anyone else...."The idea that someone smoking on a separate floor of a hotel is causing significant concern for guests on the floors below is nonsensical," said Michael J. McFadden, mid-Atlantic regional director of The Smoker's Club Inc.

"If a hotel has any sort of decent ventilation system at all, there should be no problem. Ask yourself, how often have you personally ever been bothered by someone smoking on a floor above you in a hotel?"

United Spinal Appoints New Executive Director

Jackson Heights, NY––United Spinal Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul J. Tobin of Staten Island, New York, to the position of Executive Director. Tobin, a United States Navy veteran, will oversee all strategic operations and ensure the execution of United Spinal’s vision. The organization is a national member organization dedicated to people with spinal cord injuries or disorders (SCI/D).

Tobin served as Deputy Executive Director from July 2003 and was on the Board of Directors from 1995 to 1996. Tobin has also held a variety of managerial positions with United Spinal, including Hospital Services Officer, Director of Special Projects, and Group Director of Benefit Services. He was promoted to Associate Executive Director of Benefit Services in 1998. Tobin was unanimously appointed to the position of executive director by the Board of Directors upon the retirement of Gerard Kelly this month.

“Paul has exhibited great energy, commitment and leadership talent since joining the staff in 1996 and during the past three years as deputy executive director,” said Clair Russell Hesselton, president of United Spinal Association. “We are confident that he will work tirelessly with the board of directors to ensure that United Spinal Association strives to be the best SCI/D organization in the nation.”

Among Tobin’s goals is to continue the tradition of service that is the legacy of United Spinal and “to help each of us learn from one another, improve our collective quality of life, and ensure that we can each achieve the goals and expectations we set for ourselves,” he said. “I intend to continually challenge the limitations imposed by attitudes, medical technology, society and government.”

Tobin, a Long Island native, graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1991. Upon graduation, Tobin attended United States Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, from which he was commissioned an ensign in November of 1991. His duty stations included the Naval Training Center in Orlando, Florida, where he was Assistant Public Works Officer, and the Naval Air Warfare Center in Lakehurst, New Jersey, where he served as Assistant Resident Officer In Charge of Construction.

After sustaining a spinal cord injury in August of 1993, Tobin underwent rehabilitation at the Castle Point (NY) Veterans Affairs Medical Center for rehabilitation training.

Tobin, his wife Lorraine, and their 12 year-old son, Connor, live in the Great Kills neighborhood of Staten Island.

United Spinal Association was founded in 1946 by World War II veterans that had sustained spinal cord injuries. The mission of United Spinal Association is to provide expertise, create access to resources and strengthen hope, thereby enabling people with SCI/D to fulfill their potential as active members of their communities. The Association has provided over $52 million for spinal cord research and the education of health care professionals. United Spinal’s financial support helped to launch two of the most respected spinal cord research facilities in the country at Yale University and the James J. Peters Dept. of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx, NY. Membership in United Spinal Association is free and open to all people with SCI/D.

We would love it if you could post any information regarding MC Rugby on your website. If you don't know, we were founded in May of 2005 and finally got approval from the school in April, 2006. However, we are on observation for 6 months and need to prove that we are serious and responsible. We would love to have alumni attend our games and show some support. Our last game against Marist boasted attendance of approximately 200 people and was a lot of fun, even though we lost. We will keep you posted on our schedule and outcomes of the games if you would like, as well as directions to the field. Thanks a lot for this opportunity, the team will be glad to hear about it. Speak to you soon.

John,

Thank you for your wish for my birthday!  It is very nice to know that someone cares enough to recognize this event that we all share (many times, hopefully!) in our lives.

I'm not sure what your grandmother meant but I enjoy my birthday as I do any other day in the year.  As we approach our "golden years", we start to realize that today is what we have and tomorrow is not promised so enjoy what you have (and I do).  I am blessed with a wonderful, loving wife, a daughter, son-in-law, 2 great grandchildren, my mother and sister.  What more could you ask for!

I do not miss ML or the work.  I miss the people I worked with (and who worked for me) and the relationships we built.  I try to have lunch with someone every month or so to keep the ties in place.  Retirement is a wonderful life event if you have prepared for it (and we have).

Thanks again,
Frank

Making his return to Manhattan as an assistant coach to help with the jumpers and overall conditioning of the field athletes is Elliot Belin.

Prior to being named a Jasper assistant, the 2003 Manhattan graduate was coaching high school track and field at Trinity School in Manhattan.

Belin, a Bronx native, brings persistence and perseverance with him to the program. Not highly recruited out of Cardinal Hayes High School for track and field, Belin came to Manhattan to major in chemical engineering. In his second year as a Manhattan undergraduate, Belin decided to walk onto the Jasper track and field team. Only two years later, he was one of the MAAC's top triple jumpers, and he qualified for the prestigious IC4A Championships.

Elliot is a perfect example of a great work ethic, noted Mecca. Coming in as a walk-on and qualifying for the IC4A shows what happens when you put your heart into something.

Belin still competes in the triple jump at the Metropolitan Athletic Congress's (division of USA Track and Field) Open Meets.

Middle man

All too often a high school prospect can be misdirected. Reebok ABCD 2006 took place in Teaneck, New Jersey three weeks ago. Every year the campers are given a pamphlet. One of the many topics discussed in this pamphlet are suggestions for the campers on how to be careful with whom you choose to listen to or hang around with.

The influence of a third party is all too common and typically there is less concern for the kid's well being than there is for personal gain or some sort of self gratification. Whether or not these "advisers" are from some of the high schools on the NCAA's list or are an independent party remains to be seen. They need to be weeded out though. The question is, how? Quinn seems to be one of the good guys.

"Eddie (Cota) didn't come from much. He wanted to go to Manhattan College," said Quinn. "He kept saying to me he wasn't good enough and I kept telling him fine, but what is your dream school Eddie? 'I've always dreamed of playing at North Carolina Coach.' For the first time ever I picked up the phone, called Dean Smith and told him about this kid I had and he came up and watched a few games and the rest is history." After graduating from St. Thomas More and passing his SAT's, Cota reached the Final Four three of his four years as a Tar Heel and went on to make a six-figure salary playing professionally overseas.

New England, New York and New Jersey
Sept/Oct 2005

In an effort to transform lives and reach beyond my office walls, I set out from my comfortable corner in Eugene, OR to tour the East Coast and visit as many engineering outreach people and programs as possible. My journey was truly an eye-opening experience. The people I met were enthusiastic and the programs I saw were ambitious.  It was extraordinary to be a part of it as I gave presentations at multiple conferences, colleges and Universities. The pre-engineering culture on the East Coast was progressive, intense and clustered.

My first stop was Manhattan College, a small Catholic college that serves as the lead partner for a new small theme based high school in NYC with the help of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (among others) called BETA (the Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy).  The school of engineering supports and assists BETA to address the need for a more technologically literate citizenry, more engineers in our workforce, and a more diverse workforce.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/15177642.htm

FORGOTTEN : D.A. put him in jail to assure his testimony

***Begin Quote***

For two months, from mid-November 2004 to mid-January 2005, Odd languished in the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, trying to figure out why he was there, and desperately trying to convince somebody - anybody - to set him free.

***End Quote***

Put new meaning into the "lock him up and throw away the key"! But the road to perdition is paved with good intentions. But you all just keep putting you faith in gubamint.

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
