Homeless Man Rewarded With Cash And A Job For Returning Bonds
July 25, 2006 4:06 p.m. EST
Jacob Cherian - All Headline News Staff Writer

***Begin Quote***

Detroit, MI (AHN) - A homeless man from Detroit returned $20,738.88 in a savings bond he discovered in a dumpster to their rightful owner. In return, he was rewarded with cash and a job.

***End Quote***

I love the affirmation of the basic honesty of people. When I am put to the test, I hope it is a small amount. Not sure I could do so well with big bucks. My fellow alums are certainly at the 1M$ level.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

M-E Class of '96 to honor 2 classmates
By Connie Nogas Press & Sun-Bulletin

ENDWELL -- When Maine-Endwell's Class of 1996 gathers for its 10th reunion next month, classmates will reminisce about old times and pay tribute to two deceased classmates.

Classmates will honor Mae Colwell, who was 16 when she was struck and killed by a train near her Endwell home in 1994, and Pete Matzke, a 1996 M-E graduate and an engineering student at Manhattan College who died in an accidental fall on the Cornell University campus in August 1997.

The ninth annual Pete Matzke Memorial 5 Kilometer Road Race is scheduled for 8 a.m. Aug. 5, beginning at the Maine-Endwell track as part of the reunion events. The race is open to the public, but some reunion events -- including an Aug. 5 reunion dinner at Traditions at the Glen in the Town of Union -- are open only to 1996 graduates and their guests.

"Pete and Mae were caring and thoughtful people," said Laurie Griesinger Ewing, a classmate who now lives in Illinois but will return home for the reunion weekend. "By including them in our thoughts, prayers and spirits during this event, we can honor their memory."

The reunion will start at 8 p.m. Aug. 4 as classmates gather at The Galley on Hooper Road. Any M-E graduate or staff member may attend, said Kathryn Cornelius, another 1996 graduate and one of the reunion organizers.

So far, 87 classmates and guests from the 174-member class are planning to attend, Cornelius said.

Many classmates already return to Endwell every August for the road race, so it made sense to schedule the reunion around the race, she said. Matzke was known for his running and served as captain of the school's 1995 and 1996 Section 4 Championship cross-country teams.

A memorial table containing photographs in honor of Colwell and Matzke will be on display during the Saturday night reunion at Traditions at the Glen, Cornelius said. Classmates can write tributes and make a donation to the $1,000 Peter Matzke Memorial Scholarship given annually to a graduating senior and runner.

Barbara Ann Dailey, Matzke's mother, said she was honored that her son's former classmates didn't forget about him and believes the class may have learned some lessons from experiencing the death of two classmates at a young age.

"It brought a strong dose of reality to everybody," she said. "Maybe his whole class realizes how precious life is."

Subject: The "Liberty Teeth" Speech by George Washington

Dear Jasper John,

I knew the quote attributed to George Washington by Curmudgeon was false without even looking it up.  99 and 99/100 percent had a non-18th century look to me.   A discussion of the origins of this bogus quote and others follows below.

One must be very careful in trusting the validity of quotes found on the Internet.  I have to say that rightwingers tend to be especially prone to passing them on.

As far as guns are concerned, I guess I watched too many westerns as a kid.  A lesson I learned from them is that an armed society is a dangerous society.  "Please leave your pistols at the door"  was sage advice.

Sincerely yours,
Danlad M Stebbins

Bogus Quotes Attributed to the Founders

Introduction

Quotes that were never made by the Founders, but refuse to die, especially on the Internet, are discussed.

The "Liberty Teeth" Speech by George Washington

Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence. The church, the plow, the prairie wagon, and citizen's firearms are indelibly related. From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and the pistol are equally indispensable. Every corner of this land knows firearms, and more than 99 99/100 percent of them by their silence indicate they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference; they deserve a place with all that's good. When firearms, go all goes; we need them every hour.

--- Falsely attributed to George Washington, address to the second session of the first U.S. Congress.

This quotation, sometimes called the "liberty teeth" quote, appears nowhere in Washington's papers or speeches, and contains several historical anachronisms: the reference to "prairie wagon" in an America which had yet to even begin settling the Great Plains (which were owned by France at the time), the reference to "the Pilgrims" which implies a modern historical perspective, and particularly the attempt by "Washington" to defend the utility of firearms (by use of statistics!) to an audience which would have used firearms in their daily lives to obtain food, defend against hostile Indians, and which had only recently won a war for independence.

The "99 99/100 percent" is also an odd phrase for 18th century America, which tended not to use fractional percentages. It's clear that "Washington" is addressing "gun control" arguments which wouldn't exist for another couple of centuries, not to mention doing so in a style that is uncharacteristic of the period, and uncharacteristic of Washington's addresses to Congress, both of which exhibited a high degree of formality.

This is a false quote, but bits and pieces of it still continue to crop up from time to time. Even national publications, such as Playboy magazine, have been snared by it. (Playboy published the "quote" in December 1995 as part of an article entitled "Once and for All: What the Founding Fathers Said About Guns". After consulting with an assistant editor of the George Washington Papers at the University of Virginia, Playboy published a lengthy correction in March 1996.)

The above analysis (by Clayon Cramer) was taken in part from a "talk.politics.guns" usenet FAQ. (Original source: Cramer, Clayton, Firing Back, 1995. Used by permission of the author.)

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) also comments (excerpted with permission) on the liberty teeth speech as follows: "This has several variations including 'hour' for 'moment' and sometimes added as part of an actual Washington quote 'A free people ought not only to be armed...' The various citations are even more numerous than different wordings: Address to the Second Session of the First U.S. Congress; Speech to Congress of January 7, 1790, printed in the Boston Independent Chronicle, January 14, 1790; the Federalist No. 53; Debates and Proceedings in the Convention of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1785."

SAF mentions another fabricated George Washington quote:

Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action.

SAF's analysis from the same page follows:

While this quote is often attributed to George Washington in his Farewell Address, this quote cannot be found there. Many people have tried to verify its origin, but cannot confirm its authenticity.

Dan Gifford tried to track this quote down but was unsuccessful for his article. See: "The Conceptual Foundations of Anglo-American Jurisprudence in Religion and Reason", The Tennessee Law Review: A Second Amendment Symposium Issue, Page 801, footnote 201. This issue of the Tennessee Law Review is part of the SAF bookshelf.

Perhaps the American Freedom Library available from Laissez Faire Books features the best history of this alleged quote on their Version 3.1 CD-ROM. The searchable CD-ROM notes that the above statement is:

"Attributed to George Washington.--Frank J. Wilstach, A Dictionary of Similes, 2d ed., p. 526 (1924). This can be found with minor variations in wording and in punctuation, and with 'fearful' for 'troublesome,' in George Seldes, The Great Quotations, p. 727 (1966). Unverified. In his most recent book of quotations, The Great Thoughts (1985), Seldes Says, p. 441, col. 2, footnote, this paragraph 'although credited to the 'Farewell' [address] cannot be found in it. Lawson Hamblin, who owns a facsimile, and Horace Peck, America's foremost authority on quotations, informed me this paragraph is apocryphal [fake].'"

{extraneous not related to the Washington quote deleted}

{JR:  I have to applaud the scholarship. That Conostoga wagon reference should have tipped us all off. And the Ivory claim should have clinched it. Curmudgeon will be chagrined, chastised, and crazed at the error. I doubt it will change his opinion on guns. It certainly doesn't change mine. Guns are the reason we have what little freedom we do have. They are the "great equalizer". There's a reason that girls travel in pairs today. Those "wing men" provide them some safety. Two girls are usually a match physically for one guy. Look thru the great genocides of history and one of the stages is the disarming of the population to be targeted. Can't happen here? No, the Federal Civil War, the Indian Wars, the KKK, Waco, Ruby Ridge, and the Japanese Internment all happened elsewhere. Every day the gubamint is pushing the boundaries of our freedoms. What I took away from the cowboy movies was that guns are tool to stop the bad guys. I bet if we issued Liberators to all our "womenfolk", there'd be a lot few rapes. And, much more polite respect to women in general. Have to even up the sides.  In any event, great detective work. }

Thank you very much.  Also I wish to thank you for being instrumental in putting me in touch with John.  We corresponded for several months and eventually got together with several other members of our grammar school class.  In 2004, after 52 years eight of us had a barbeque at one of the guy's house.  Your effort allowed me to experience a wonderful day with my friends, introduce my wife to my childhood and bolstered my faith in people.

Please keep up this wonderful endeavor.  I am sure there are others like me out there who need a little sunshine in their life and to be reminded God and people do care.

Your wish is my command. I get a kick out of reconnecting my fellow Jaspers. Maybe someday, everyone will be able to keep track of old friends, or at least be able to find them again, with resorting to an old injineer pain in the tush nag like me.

Now by the power vested in me of the old bcc, fellow Jasper Ms. Brock now has your email address. Hopefully, you will let me know if it works out. It's not foolproof. And, if you can regale the old Jaspers with your current accomplishments from time to time, then you'll liven up a bunch of old guys lives. Me, on the other hand, I have no life, just the endless toil of Jasper Jottings.

(Feel bad enough to want to take over? No, I didn't think so. Oh well, have to try. It's not a legacy unless you can pass it on!)

Ta ta for now, I owe I owe, it's off to work I go!

Go Jaspers,
FjohnR68

Greetings stranger,

You have asked for admission into a private Yahoo group. But, you didn't supply any of the required credentials. For example, if I sent you an invite, I don't recognize your email address. If you received an invite from some one else, they didn't tell me you were coming. Or, you are not using your "@alum" email address. You gave me nothing by way of intro, so my guard is up.

Who are you and what is your connection to Manhattan College?

Sorry to be so blunt, but there are bad people out there. They try to get into private yahoo groups for all sorts of bad purposes.

I have been "publishing" a weekly free ezine about Jaspers, there activities, and stuff about Manhattan College for a while now. I have about 700 weekly email readers and an unknown number of web browsers who all trust me to be vigilant about their information.

I'm trying to recreate a virtual Plato's Cave where Jaspers of all eras can share a common bound. The first step of doing that is to make you give the "secret handshake" for admission.

Any way, that's all I need to admit you. I look forward to hearing from you.

John-

My name is Gavin Cosgrove '03.  I used to get the e-mail version of JJs but when that stopped I kept upto date on jasperjottings.com (which isn't updated anymore?).

I ran track at Manhattan ('00-'03) and am currently entering my second year of law school at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada - not Jersey ;) ).

Look forward to hearing back from you.  Keep up the great work,

Gavin

P.S.  How do I get an @alum address?

Hi Gavin, That email is an automagic one. I try to keep the bad guys out of my Yahoo groups. One way is to challenge everyone!

>  I used to get the e-mail version of JJs but when that stopped

I've still been "doing" it. So if it "stopped", I don't know why. Bounces, maybe?

>I kept up to date on jasperjottings.com (which isn't updated anymore?).

It's still up to date as far as I know. I'd check the bookmark. When I changed hosting providers, I found out that IE bookmarked the tripod name and NOT www.jasperjottings.com. (I own that domain name!)

I know I cited you in the updates section of http://www.jasperjottings.com/2006/jasperjottings20060723.htm

Right back at you.

>Keep up the great work

It's an interesting hobby, but I think the alumni office should be doing it.

>How do I get an @alum address?

http://www.alum.manhattan.edu/authenticate.htm

When you register on the alumni website, and I did it so long ago I barely remember, you could sign up for email forwarding. One of the steps was to pick a user name and that became your forwarding name. I lost my head and used "reinkefj" instead of "tin_sexy_smart_old_goat". So to quote the Grail Knight, "choose wisely".

Hope this helps,

Thanks for accepting on LinkedIn. By the way, I thought the endorsement by Paul was very nice and in the best LaSallian tradition. I'm going to cite you and it in the Jasper Jottings issue that moves on Sunday.

Best wishes,

Ziggs harvested all the public personal pages as a search engine would. Using their free offering, I have identified ~700 possible Jaspers from it. I'm planning to share 10 "found on Ziggs" Jaspers each week in the coming weeks. The first group moves in this week's issue. I don't like to overwhelm the readership with too much of anything. Besides "harvesting" takes a lot of time. And, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

The Quotable Mr. Franklin: On Life, Liberty, and Property ...

"The important ends of civil government are the personal securities of life and liberty. Private property is a creature of society and is subject to the calls of that society whenever its necessities shall require it. He that does not like civil society on these terms, let him retire and live among savages. He can have no right to the benefits of society who will not pay his dues toward the support of it."

(Source: The Compleated Autobiography, by Benjamin Franklin, compiled and edited by Mark Skousen)

Well, It's not often I disagree with the Dead Old White Guys, but Ben hasn't see the "Confiscation Society". The Great Society of Lyndon Johnson followed to its logical end. We, citizens of the USA, have come to "live amoung the savages" without moving. Those savages are our fellow citizens and the politicians that enable theft. The Dead Old White Guys revolted over a essentially a 1% tax. We have, by our inattention to government, allowed an incalculable tax to be placed on us. The CIC in hos blog has outlined it. I think he may understate it. In addition to all the direct taxes (i.e., income; sales; and estate) and the indirect taxes (i.e., taxes on business; taxes on gasoline which add into the cost of every product; the cost of laws; the cost of regulations; cost of compliance), we have the abominable tax of inflation. And that to the tax of the entitlement mentality. Add that to the tax of low expectations in the public skoolz, where we are brainwashing future citizens into the religion of State Worship. Add that to the illusion of us sheep democratically electing which wolf (D or R) is going to have us for dinner. AND the Dead Old White Guys must be rolling over! Wake up. The only thing left is the camps and death chambers. We are in a terrible place.

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
