Heineken Beer Bottle Bricks

***Begin Quote***

As the story goes, Heineken was strolling along by the sea in Jamaica, and was shocked at the number of beer bottles littering the beach. He was also concerned with the lack of cheap building materials, and at the resulting living conditions for the poor. Putting two and two together, he envisioned a “World Bottle” which would be imported for drinking but kept for construction.

***End Quote***

As an injineer, I admire the simple ideas that can do the old pair of dimes (paradigm) shift. For whatever reason, the Universe didn't want poor people to be able to collect the litter and better themselves. But, I am sure that Jaspers can come up with even better ideas. I'm going to try just a little harder.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

OBITS

HEADLINE: OBITUARIES

JOHN DAVID "CHIP" HARRIS

On Thursday, July 13, 2006, an empty space was left on earth. John David "Chip" Harris departed this life to join his son Ryan. (Ryan may be shaking in his boots about now.)

Chip was most proud of his family: Kathy, his wife; his children, Todd, his wife, Kelly and their soon to be born daughter, Ryan; Poppie and her fiance, Amos; Ryan (deceased); Andrew; Erin and his sister Debbie and her husband, John. True to his nature, Chip gloried in the successes and accomplishments of others much more than in his own. And his own were no small feat.

From the humble beginnings of a one room schoolhouse in Hurley, New York, Mr. Harris began to carve into life an unforgettable future. His unbridled curiosity, love of learning and the ability to find good in each person he met were the tools of his many endeavors.

Chip graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree. He was also the college's nominee for the Rhodes Scholarship. Before enrolling in law school at the University of Notre Dame, Mr. Harris served and received an honorable discharge from the United States Navy. Chip's respect for the dignity of each individual led him to his ultimate specialty in the law, personal injury and wrongful death litigation. He was among the first group of attorneys in Arizona to achieve the certification of "Specialist" in these areas when the designation was implemented by the State Bar in 1991.

In addition to his successful law practice, Chip thoroughly enjoyed sharing his expertise and experience with a younger generation as a Professor of Law Adjunct at the Arizona State University College of Law teaching Trial Advocacy. He also accepted an invitation to become a judge for the Town of Paradise Valley where, in court, Chip may have occasionally deviated a bit from the law as it is known to others. Nevertheless, he was loved and admired by defendants, plaintiffs, staff and colleagues because he treated each with the respect and consideration they deserved.

Chip also served in the Maricopa County Superior Court system as a Judge Pro Tem since 1988. In this capacity, Chip followed the letter of the law. Included in this position came the privilege of performing marriage ceremonies which Chip did with regularity and great enthusiasm. Chip's list of other professional memberships and honors is lengthy and admirable.

As with his professional carrier, Chip was also an overachiever on the golf course, playing to a handicap of 2-at times. He was a student of the game of golf as he was the game of life. Anyone lucky enough to play in his foursome found a genuine friend, mentor and cheerleader.

Anyone lucky enough to know Chip knew he played the game of life to its fullest. In his last days, Chip fought his cancer with tenacity, strength and courage maintaining a quiet dignity. Surrounded by his family, Chip died, graduating life with honors.

A visitation will be held on Monday, July 17, 2006 from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M., at Brophy Chapel, 4701 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 10:00 A.M., at Brophy Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to any of the following charitable organizations:
1. Ryan C. Harris Learning Center at the University of Dayton
2. Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation
3. Brophy College Preparatory
4. ASU Foundation Sandra Day 'Connor College of Law

Track and field series offers kids chance to enjoy different events

MONTROSE - The scene had to be as pure as any sport gets. A group standing at the starting line to race 50 meters, too young to be sure how far a meter is.

"When I blow the whistle, I want you to run as fast as you can," meet director/starter Roy Arnesen said. "Try to run as straight as you can, and at the end you'll get a ribbon."

That race, the 5-year-old and under 50 meters, kicked off the 26th Westchester Summer Twilight Track and Field Series yesterday at Hen Hud High School. The meets are scheduled every Tuesday at Hen Hud until Aug. 15. There is a youth portion that starts at 4:30 p.m. and a high school and open division that begins each week at 6:30 p.m.

No doubt the threat of heavy rain scared some folks away yesterday. There was a wonderful naivete of competition, where the greatest thing was that they didn't know any better: Run from here to that line over there. That's it. This is before the $100 Nike running spikes and showmanship replaces innocence.

This before they realize that competing in four or five events in one day isn't that fun. Hen Hud track coach Marcia Bailey, who's been helping Arnesen organize the meet since 1987, encouraged kids to compete in as many events as they could after handing over their $6 entry fee.

"Try as many as you want," she'd say to a number of kids.

Duane Jackson, 11, competed in the 50-meter dash, the mile and the 100 hurdles, all in about 30 minutes, a feat that would have most adult runners searching for their cell phone to call an ambulance. Jackson, a Buchanan resident, won the hurdles and later competed in the 100 and 400, all on the word of his best friend, Chris Chiffeiller.

They went 1-2 in their age group in the 100 and shared a Maurice Greene-Ato Boldon-type post-race hug.

"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him," Jackson said of Chiffeiller.

It was Jackson's first track meet. Both are members of the Town of Cortlandt recreation camp, headed by Bailey.

"This is awesome," Jackson said. "I'm going to do anything. I'm going to run everything."

Arnesen started the series in 1982, realizing that at the time there were virtually no local meets for both young and old.

"This is to promote the sport to the kids and hopefully they come back," he said. "But it's for us (the older runners) too."

orktown track coach Keith Smith has been with Arnesen and Bailey since 1988. His star, Sean Cuevo, the 2005 100-meter state champ, won the open 100, wearing a Flash Gordon T-shirt and his University of Georgia running tights.

"This is nothing like running in college," said Cuevo, who just finished his freshman year at Georgia. "You can just run with your friends and have a good time."

That was the same idea for 40-year-old David Ryan of Cortlandt. He ran the leadoff leg of the open sprint medley with his wife, Kathleen, brother Sean and nephew Chris.

Ryan's son Sean, 8, and daughter Kaitlin, 7, ran in the youth events earlier.

"For us, it's a family thing," Ryan said.

Most of the youth events were made up of competitors from the Wings With Eagles track club, in it's ninth year under Nick Mitchell, who also coaches Westlake's track team. Mitchell's team, which he started out of the Peekskill Assembly of God, is an opportunity for him to spread the gospel and share a sport he knows.

"(The meets) are character builders and it teaches discipline," said Mitchell, who competed at Roosevelt and was a decathlete at Manhattan College. "I always tell them that the best race I've ever ran I came in last. It's about the effort."

New Yorkers spout off at the gas pumps

BY CHRISTINE SHOW AND BRITNEY TABOR

Newsday Staff Writers

July 16, 2006

***Begin Quote***

Steve Levy, 24, of the Bronx, Sue's son and a Manhattan College student, said he specifically chose the Islandia Exxon because he knew of the content of the gas there.

"This is one station on ethanol. I want more ethanol; it makes it a lot cheaper," he said, "It's $20 one-way [from the Bronx to Rocky Point] and that's with no a/c."

***End Quote***

{JR:  Guess the subways stopped running! They have AC. 24 and still a student? Still going to the Bronx, he has to be one of ours. Guess he hasn’t taken any economics courses yet. Perhaps it the TAX on the gas that you should be worried about. And, 20$ one way is about 7 gallons of gas. What’s he driving a tank! }

John,

I got your LinkedIn invitation.  Thanks for the connection.  Our prior connection was through your Jasper Jottings email.  I forget how I first learned about it, but I was getting your Jasper Jottings emails for quite a while.  I am not sure I am still getting it so I may have dropped off your list somehow.

Background information on me for your LinkedIn:

I am a partner at White & Case LLP (one of the world's largest international law firms - nearly 2000 lawyers).  I practice in the litigation/intellectual property area with a focus on litigation and counseling.  With my background in EE and experience in semiconductors at IBM, I like to focus in the high tech sector, but I work in areas of technology.  If you want more information, you can find my very brief bio at:  http://www.whitecase.com/kmcgann/

Kevin

Kevin,

Any time. All though I am running out of LinkedIn invites.   Unlike Gmail invitations, they don’t keep giving you more. Dumb system, but it’s is unique.

I’ve been producing it weekly since 1999. I sent you an invite to rejoin. There’s also the last three years online at http://www.jasperjottings.com   and there’s a search function.

Fascinating stuff where people go and what they do after the Jasper experience. My best friend John Dandola 70EE does Real Estate law in Queens. Interesting world.

Yell if I can be of any help.

Fjohn68

{JR:  Any Jasper, who is on LinkedIn, is more than welcome to connect to me. I have about 700 contacts. I was after the Alumni Office to "approve" a LinkedIn group, like Duke, Notre Dame, and others. I couldn't do it without them because you have to have official sanction to use the logo. Never was able to pull the teeth necessary to get it done. Sigh! (If I had a wish like Midas, I wouldn't wish for the "golden touch", I'd wish for the power to persuade. With that, you can get whatever you want.) So, look Kevin and me on LinkedIn. }

Subject: Hi John - From LinkedIn

Hi John,

Thanks for your invitation.  Sorry this is so late.

Somehow your name does sound familiar, but maybe it's just from not responding to your invitation earlier?

I graduated from Manhattan College in 1981.  BSEE. 3.91 GPA

I only added that because I read all your GPAs.

I went straight to Grad School, taught at Va Tech, Univ of the Pacific, and now Hofstra.

http://www.hofstra.edu/Academics/HCLAS/Engineering/index_Engineering.cfm

You have a tremendous wealth of experience and experiences.  Whew!

I am currently continuing my pioneering work in developing a multimedia course for Freshman Design at Hofstra.  I've been at it for 2 years now, and have taught the course twice (Fall 2005, Sp 2006).  I'm spending most of my time this summer developing more course material.

Here's some links about me:

1. Freshman Engineering Design Course Video Promo (4 min):

http://www.hofstra.edu/Academics/HCLAS/Engineering/egg_videos.cfm

2. How Dr. Caputi and other Hofstra Engineering Professors are finding innovative ways to make Engineering accessible and fun:

 http://www.hofstra.edu/AlumDev/Alumni/HofUpd/hofupd_sp06_engineering3.cfm

3.  CTSE Newsletter - Two articles on how Dr. Caputi is working towards transforming Engineering Education:

   - "Making Things Click in the Classroom"

   - "More Thank Bells and Whistles: Adding Multimedia"

http://www.hofstra.edu/PDF/ctse_newsletter_fall05.pdf

I am just breaking into "Success" reading and audio.  I noticed that is one of your main interests.

I'm reading John Maxwell - "Thinking for a Change", and will get to  "The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player",  which I want to use portions of for my Design class.

Also reading Steven Scott -  "Simple Steps to Impossible Dreams" "The Richest Man Who Ever Lived" and will soon receive the "Master Strategies of Super Achievers" DVD Course

In a few years (maybe even a few more) I hope to be able to develop a way to make my advances in multimedia course development simpler and easier so that more professors and other visual communicators will adopt it.

Well - back to Flash development.

Thanks for the invitation again.

Ciao,
Mauro

Hi Mauro,

Your welcome. Late is no big deal. I have an explanation for all my "new found friends". I am ALMOST embarrassed to admit this. But since I have no pride, common sense, or lots of other things. Here goes. The consensus from two smart people was that the original problem was an email from mysql that cced a ton of people. Evidently, my processes sucked it in, like birds on a runway into a aircraft jet engine, and, poof, unlike the jet engine producing gull burgers, I got a couple of hundred "instant friends". I assume that any Jasper addresses got vacuumed in as well.

I love to tinker and automate stuff! So if you don't mind, we'll just pretend it wasn't my stupid mechanization, but something serendipitous. When you get lemons, make lemonade.  As you might imagine, I got a ton of email from people saying "huh" like the Aflac duck.

If you want to decline the LinkedIn invite, that's fine. I take rejection well. There is a mechanism now to request "de Vulcan Mind Melding". They probably had to mechanize it just for me.

If you want to accept, or leave it in play, that's fine as well. Who knows what will come of anything we do?

I see myself more as a puppy trying everything, trying to do everything, and just trying to live through technology. Sometimes I'm AM SURE I am a pia, but I wag my "tail" (i.e., my tongue a lot) and people seem to forgive or forget me. Until they need something, then they say who was that crazy whirling dervish!

;-)

Just about everything I have is accessible thru my home page, and I blog of course.

With Respect To Indexes, but what was your starting salary. I had the unique distinction to have BOTH the lowest graduating index AND the highest starting salary. That's an accomplishment to be proud of imho!

I'll review your links at my leisure to see what I can steal. Did you ever play with a visual product called serious magic's visual communicator or some such. I made a demo. I'll see if I can find it and put up an url to it.

Oh, have to run, someone just came in asking for help on the "Batline". Yes, I have a special email id, that alerts me in real time when email comes in. All mail on that email account is by definition "urgent". Yes, your's was routed in here as well. ;-)

Ahhh, so many things to get into and so little time.

Cheers,
Yell if I can help,

I accepted the invitation yesterday.  I did notice many new acceptees!

Yes! I noticed that, and told my wife about it last night. That was an extremely high salary for 1968.  The starting ee job salary for 1981 was $22k.  I went straight to grad school, so i have no data.  But my first asst prof position in 1991 was not much higher than your 1968 starting salary.

Woah.

Yes.  I have the pro product.  We made some simple talking head Clips with it, with some lower third stuff.  I had my dept head Talk about informed design as an expert (which he actually is).

Thank you for the lovely birthday greeting.  It was such an insightful perspective.  Your grandmother was a very wise woman.

I actually started my day waking up with a terrible cold and most of the morning feeling miserable.  However, the day went on, I had some friends over to celebrate and it was absolutely wonderful.  I thought of your email afterwards and was refreshed that the day and weekend was great.  It allowed me to think this is my year to truly enjoy!!  I wish you well and thank you again for your wonderful email.

Dear John,

The annual Manhattan College Businessmen's Retreat is scheduled for Friday September 22nd through Sunday September 24th.  The retreat starts with check in at the Passionate's Retreat House (formerly the Cardinal Spellman Retreat House) in Riverdale at 5 PM followed by dinner, and wraps up with Mass on Sunday at 11 AM. This year we have an interesting line up of speakers, including both the President of Cardinal Spellman High School and the President of Cardinal High School, two well regarded speakers. The weekend is monastic in approach (men only) but all Manhattan Men and their guests are invited.

This is a great opportunity for an annual Spiritual check up. Love to see you there!

Any one interested in attending may call my brother Ed McEneney, '59 at (914) 962-2700 for a registration form.

From the Desk of Rudy Giuliani                     July 19, 2006

Your gift of $500, $250, $100, $50 or $25 to Solutions America PAC will help us mobilize Republicans across the nation.

Dear Friend,

As the Mayor of New York City, I saw that putting Republican ideas into action improves peoples’ lives. We cracked down on crime, cleaned up the streets, cut taxes, and reformed welfare – all while turning a $2 billion deficit into a $3 billion surplus. The result was a city transformed into a place of greater civility and economic activity – a more vibrant and safe environment in which to raise children.

I learned the virtue of strong Republican leadership when I had the honor of serving President Ronald Reagan in his Justice Department. His optimism helped inspire our nation as he led us to victory over communism.

Today, President Bush faces a similar challenge. In the middle of a war on terror, we need to remain focused on furthering Republican ideas more than ever before. We can’t turn back now.

That’s why I’ve been traveling across the country to support Republican candidates as we face the 2006 elections.

And that’s why I am writing to you personally today to ask you to join with me in helping to unify and strengthen the Republican Party.

I formed Solutions America to help Republican candidates dedicated to finding common sense solutions to the challenges that America still faces. Chief among these are the importance of keeping Americans safe while winning the war on terror and promoting fiscal responsibility.

Your gift of $500, $250, $100, $50 or $25 to Solutions America PAC will help us mobilize Republicans across the nation and provide the essential resources for protecting and strengthening the Republican majorities in the U.S. Congress and electing more Republicans at every level.

Please let me hear from you today by clicking on SolutionsAmerica.com so that I can be on the forefront of helping our Republican candidates in these important 2006 elections.

Sincerely,

P.S. This is your chance to stand up for what you believe in. Please make your most generous financial commitment of $500, $250, $100, $50, $35 or $25. Thank you – together we will build a stronger America in a safer world.

Dear Mr. Reinke:

I am a 1989 graduate of Manhattan College (School of Arts & Sciences....BA in English and World Literature).

I also have two sons--one is autistic and nonverbal (six years old) and one who is developing neurotypically (three years old) and will be entering the Mount Vernon, New York public school system in September 2006.

I looked for a web board for Mount Vernon parents, but, when I found none, decided to start one myself, on Yahoo (I post quite frequently on the autism boards there).

If you would consider this item for inclusion on your "Jasper Jottings" I would appreciate it.  The address for the board is:

Many thanks!

Its back.

Finally.

I have sat down, or had thoughts I wanted to put onto e-paper, and for 183,173 reasons I just have not gotten the job done over the last 6 months or so. So, perhaps I will write more regularly again, I certainly would like to. And away we go…

This past weekend, Julia (gf) and I ventured down the Henry Hudson Parkway to visit alma mater, Manhattan College. Over the winter we had talked about taking a trip down when the weather got nice and Saturday was gorgeous. 85, sunny, summer in the city.

We arrived in the middle of the day to a near empty campus. It was almost as if we had called ahead and asked everyone to go away. We wandered around the dorms, student center, and campus in general. I went to Manhattan for all 4 years, and I had not been back to campus since I graduated.

What I didn’t anticipate was the sense of both accomplishment and like I was walking through a dream. Having spent most of 4 years there, coming back was very much like it didn’t happen but existed only in my mind’s eye.

Does that happen to you? Does a place, person, or something else entirely trigger emotions, thoughts, or memories?

I walked past Draddy Gymnasium and all those nights of pickup basketball games came back. Hour after hour. The student center brought back memories of those wonderful secrets that were the ingredients of our dinners. The Quad, the 8 trees symbolizing the 8 semesters. All the classrooms and hours of class and the work associated with it. Tests, reading, papers.

Did it all really happen? It seemed to flash by in an instant. But thinking of the 120 credits and 4 years I felt a tremendous sense of pride for accomplishing that chapter of my life.

But there I was, in a new chapter of my life poking around the past. Two worlds coming together. Julia was very happy to see where I was for school. She got to see all the little things that made up a big part of my life, and seeing how shes a big part of my life now, it was nice for two worlds to come together.

GENE SHARP A Biographical Profile

Gene Sharp is Senior Scholar at the Albert Einstein Institution in Boston, Massachusetts. From 1965 he held research appointments in Harvard Universitys Center for International Affairs for nearly thirty years. He is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Dr. Sharp, who has been called "the Clausewitz of nonviolent warfare," founded the Albert Einstein Institution in 1983 to promote research, policy studies, and education on the strategic uses of nonviolent struggle in face of dictatorship, war, genocide, and oppression.

He holds the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in political theory from Oxford University (1968), a Master of Arts in Sociology (1951), and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences (1949) from Ohio State University. Manhattan College awarded him an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (1983). Rivier College awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humanitarian Service (1996).

He lived for ten years in England and Norway. He did advanced studies at Oxford University, and in Norway he held positions at the University of Oslo and the Institute for Social Research

Dr. Sharp is the author of various books on nonviolent struggle, power, political problems, dictatorships, and defense policy. His writings have been published in English in several countries and in twenty-seven other languages. These include Norwegian, German, French, Italian, Arabic, Hebrew, Tamil, Burmese, Karen, Thai, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.

His The Politics of Nonviolent Action (1973) (Introduction by Thomas C. Schelling) was immediately hailed as a classic and the definitive study of nonviolent struggle.

His Making Europe Unconquerable (1985) focused on the relevance of civilian-based defense for Western Europe. It carried a Foreword by George F. Kennan.

His Civilian-Based Defense: A Post-Military Weapons System (1990) examined how organized nonviolent noncooperation and defiance can potentially deter and defeat internal takeovers and invasions. This book was used in 1991 and 1992 by the new independent governments of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in planning their defense against Soviet efforts to regain control.

A collection of political analyses, Social Power and Political Freedom (1980), included an Introduction by Senator Mark O. Hatfield.

Gandhi as a Political Strategist, with Essays on Ethics and Politics (1979) carried an Introduction by Coretta Scott King, and the Indian edition (1999) contained additionally a Foreword by Frederico Mayor, then Director-General of UNESCO.

His first book, Gandhi Wields the Weapon of Moral Power (1960) included a Foreword by Albert Einstein.

Additionally, he is co-editor of Resistance, Politics, and the American Struggle for Independence, 1765-1775 (1986) and of Nonviolent Action: A Research Guide (1997), as well as a contributor to several encyclopedias.

A new book, The Power and Practice of Nonviolent Struggle, is in preparation in English. The earlier edition in Tibetan is being published with a Foreword by the Dalai Lama.

Dr. Sharps recent shorter writings include From Dictatorship to Democracy (English, Burmese, Spanish, Karen, and Indonesian). The Burmese editions were repeatedly denounced by the Burmese military dictators, and the Indonesian edition carried a Foreword by Abdurrahman Wahid, now President of Indonesia. The Spanish translation circulates in Cuba.

Dr. Sharp has in recent years made major efforts to prepare simplified presentations on the nature of nonviolent struggle and its applications against dictatorships. He has conducted workshops and consulted on strategic nonviolent struggle in several crisis situations.

He maintains that the major unsolved political problems of our time dictatorship, genocide, war, social oppression, and popular powerlessness require us to rethink politics in order to develop fresh strategies and programs for their resolution. He is convinced that pragmatic, strategically planned, nonviolent struggle can be made highly effective for application in conflicts to lift oppression and as a substitute for violence.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

In Florida, according to a Miami Herald/Associated Press story by Brent Kallestad, Governor Jeb Bush announced that his state's crime rate had "dropped for the 14th straight year in 2005 to its lowest mark since 1971." Bush attributed this to "tougher laws, increased financial support from the legislature, and law-abiding citizens with guns".

***AND***

Meanwhile, in the nation's capital, where private guns have been illegally banned for decades, robberies are up 14 percent, armed assaults have jumped 18 percent in the past 30 days, and two groups of tourists were robbed at gunpoint on the National Mall, just hours after Washington's chief of police declared a "crime emergency" in the city in response to a string of violence that included the Georgetown killing, last Sunday, of British activist Alan Senitt, a volunteer for the potential presidential campaign of former Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner.

Of course, I am SURE there is no connection! Armed citizens are peace officers. The police represent the citizenry. How many stories do we hear of citizens coming to the aid of the police? We have the example of NOLA after Katrina when all the law abiding people leave town then the police are helpless to maintain order.

And that’s the last word.
