POSITRACTION: Girl Born With Backwards Legs Walks for the First Time Thanks to Strangers2019-Sep-29https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/girl-born-with-backwards-legs-walks-for-first-time/ Girl Born With Backwards Legs Walks for the First Time Thanks to Strangers Funding ‘Miracle’ Surgery By Good News Network - May 1, 2019 *** begin quote *** A “one-in-a-million” little girl who was born with both legs bent backwards has walked for the first time thanks to an outpouring of financial support that helped pay for her “miracle” surgery. 3-year-old Victoria Komada was born with bilateral tibial hemimelia – a congenital deformity which results in deformed legs and missing bones. Doctors initially told Victoria’s family that the only solution was a double amputation – but then her parents found a surgeon in Florida who would be able to reconstruct one of her legs. Though the surgery cost a whopping £180,000 ($235,000), thousands of people raised money for the Polish family so they could travel to America from their home in Norwich last July. Upon successfully raising the funds for the treatment, the family flew out to the Paley Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida where Dr. Dror Paley told them that her left leg could be fixed and her right leg could simply be fitted with a prosthetic. *** and *** “We were so happy when she took her first steps, we started crying,” she added. “We were on the way to the car and she said ‘Mummy, can I show you something.’” Dr. Paley, the mastermind who performed the surgery, said: “We achieved all that we said we would achieve for her. The reconstructed leg is very functional. “She can walk and run and do sports now. She has had superb results.” Victoria is now due to start school in September. *** end quote *** What an uplifting story. People helping people. And a brilliant doctor makes a “miracle”. I wish there were more ways to know about “causes” like this? # - # - # - # - # |

Flynn '60 BA, RIP, September 9, 2019 Good Morning All, Kathleen and Jim Smith have shared the sad news of the death of Jim's Classmate and Friend, Bill Flynn, of Portland, Oregon. Martha, Bill's Wife, was just in touch with Kathleen and Jim. Bill, a proud Jasper and Friend of Manhattan, was called home on Septempber 9, 2019 after two weeks in Hospital. Bill, " woke up one day with what he thought was the Flu, chills, fever and sore joints. Two days later he was too weak to get up and the Emergency Medical Team was called in to take him to the Hospital. Bill had developed a Staph Infection in his blood stream. The infection was cleared up but there was a lot of Bacteria on his Mitral Valve and heart failure was the cause of death." One of Martha's saddest tasks has been getting in touch with all of Bill's Friends and reaching out to Bill's New York group. Martha asks that if you know any of Bill's Friends, please let them know of Bill's passing. Jim and Kathleen were the closest that Martha was in touch with. Please pray for Bill and the repose of his soul. Please keep Martha in your prayers as she deals with the sadness and loss of her husband and as Martha has said, the large Bill-shaped empty space in her life. Thank you Kathleen. Quigley, 75 July 5, 1944 - Sept. 29, 2019 October 3, 2019 Hugh Thomas Quigley died suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday of cardiac arrest at his family’s cabin in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, in the hamlet of Lyndonville. “He left this world in a brief moment, with no pain and surrounded by the peace of nature that he so deeply appreciated,” the family said. He was 75. Mr. Quigley, who was called Tom, had been training to be a lifeguard only this past summer. Spending time on the beach with his family and his dogs was a great joy to him, relatives said, and also working in his garden. He was a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch on Wall Street when he met Theresa Koncelik, a member of the Koncelik-Whelan families of Northwest. They married on Oct. 5, 1985, in East Hampton, and joined the Koncelik-Whelan clan. The couple had five children. Mr. Quigley worked as a financial adviser here. He was “beloved by his community, and found friends wherever he went, be it through his recent endeavor in ocean lifeguard training, fellow dog lovers at the dog park and beach, or even at the dump, where he looked for random treasures to take home,” his family wrote. Hugh Quigley was born on July 5, 1944, in the Bronx, the son of Hugh Thomas Quigley Sr. and Olga Stupin Quigley, who had moved there from Florida. Mr. Quigley put himself through night school at Manhattan College while working as a police officer in the city, earning a B.A. in business. At home in East Hampton, he was an enthusiastic swimmer, both at the ocean and at the Y.M.C.A. East Hampton RECenter. “He was gregarious, quick with a joke, and had a laugh that filled the room,” his family wrote. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Koncelik Quigley, and by their children, Sally Ann Quigley Lopez of Milton, Ga., Helen Quigley of East Harlem, N.Y., Joseph Quigley, who is in his last year of graduate school in Los Angeles, Rodger Quigley of Manhattan’s Upper West Side, and Doris Quigley of Paris, as well as more than two dozen nieces and nephews. “Theresa and his children were his world, and he theirs,” they said. One sibling, Judith Quigley DeToy of Riverdale, died some time ago. The family will receive visitors tomorrow at 2 Timber Lane, East Hampton, between 5 and 8 p.m.; first for a wake, and then, at 6:30, to share memories. On Saturday at 11 a.m., a funeral Mass will be said at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in East Hampton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery on Cedar Street, after which a celebration of his life will be held at the Timber Lane house. ENDNOTE: 'Absolute theological bankruptcy' and a partial posterity2019-Oct-05https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/absolute-theological- bankruptcy-union-theological-seminary-students-pray-to-plants 'Absolute theological bankruptcy': Union Theological Seminary students confess climate sins to plants by Jon Brown | September 18, 2019 02:40 PM *** begin quote *** German pastor and anti-Nazi dissident Dietrich Bonhoeffer was among the school's more famous alumni, who left after escaping the Third Reich to teach there briefly in 1939. Appalled by the liberalism of its students, Bonhoeffer wrote they "are completely clueless with respect to what dogmatics is really about. They are not familiar with even the most basic questions. They become intoxicated with liberal and humanistic phrases, are amused at the fundamentalists, and yet basically are not even up to their level." Bonhoeffer remembered that students "openly [laughed]" at a lecture on sin and forgiveness, and accused the seminary of having "forgotten what Christian theology in its very essence stands for." Disillusioned, he decided to return to Germany to resist the Nazi regime, where he was executed at the Flossenbürg concentration camp in 1945 for his role in the July 20 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. *** end quote *** Over and above the crazy meme of “human caused climate change” that has “infected” a significant portion of the world’s population, I found an interesting factoid in the reportage. As an aside to that “interesting factoid”, a lot of politicians and bureaucrats are getting rich propagating this nonsense. Namely Al Gore! My fellow alum and high school chum Trynosky, Stephen [MC1968] took a shot at this recently on Facebook: FOXNEWS.COM reported: Al Gore rips Trump for lacking urgency on climate change: He's the 'face of global climate denial' Former Vice President Al Gore blasted President Trump for not taking climate change seriously, calling him the "face of global climate denial." Stephen K. Trynosky Replied: I'd like to comment on this but I can't. You see, I drowned 12 years ago when the rising seas swept over NY and NJ. Nailed it. Back to the main observation about the factoid: the Dietrich Bonhoeffer connection. I like the quote I captured of his. "The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children.” — Dietrich Bonhoeffer Of course, I don’t believe the “manmade climate change” meme, but apply the quote to finances and abortion. Today’s society is “immoral” imho because we are leaving some of our posterity terrible debt and we have allowed the killing of the rest of it. So sad! Sigh! Dona Nobis Pacem # - # - # - # - # |
