Very little has been said about this…..On December 2, Basque athlete Iván Fernández Anaya was competing in a cross-country race in Burlada, Navarre. He was running second, some distance behind race leader Abel Mutai - bronze medalist in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the London Olympics. As they entered the finishing straight, he saw the Kenyan runner - the certain winner of the race - mistakenly pull up about 10 meters before the finish, thinking he had already crossed the line.
Fernández Anaya quickly caught up with him, but instead of exploiting Mutai’s mistake to speed past and claim an unlikely victory, he stayed behind and, using gestures, guided the Kenyan to the line and let him cross first.
Ivan Fernandez Anaya, a Basque runner of 24 years who is considered an athlete with a big future (champion of Spain of 5,000 meters in promise category two years ago) said after the test:
“But even if they had told me that winning would have earned me a place in the Spanish team for the European championships, I wouldn’t have done it either. I also think that I have earned more of a name having done what I did than if I had won. And that is very important, because today, with the way things are in all circles, in soccer, in society, in politics, where it seems anything goes, a gesture of honesty goes down well.”
He said at the beginning: “unfortunately, very little has been said of the gesture. And it’s a shame. In my opinion, it would be nice to explain to children, so they do not think that sport is only what they see on TV: violent kicks in abundance, posh statements, fingers in the eyes of the enemy …”

Whiting - Kenneth J. Courtney, 94, passed away in his home at Crestwood Manor Senior Living in Whiting, NJ on August 23, 2019.
Born July 12, 1925 in New York, NY, he was the oldest son of William Courtney and Catherine Dowd Courtney. Ken spent his early years in New York City, graduated from Manhattan College, and served in the U.S. Army. He married Agnes Courtney (née Lederleitner) on February 4, 1951. Ken and Agnes moved to Pearl River, NY and raised their three children there - Claire, Susan, and Kevin. Following retirement from his career in the insurance industry, Ken and Agnes moved to Whiting, NJ where they resided in the Whiting Station community. Agnes preceded Ken in death in 1997, after 46 years of marriage.
Ken was known for his wonderful sense of humor and many strong friendships. He loved children and the holiday season, and was a skilled painter and gardener. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather who brought joy and laughter to his family and friends.
Ken is survived by his daughter Susan Kosloff and her husband Peter of Allentown, PA; son Kevin Courtney and his wife Wendy of Wildwood, NJ; grandchild Matthew Kosloff and great-grandchild Anders Kosloff of Philadelphia, PA; grandchild Karen Kosloff of Clinton, NJ; grandchild Daniel Courtney of Queens, NY; and grandchild Ellie Courtney of Pearl River, NY.
The viewing will be on Tuesday August 27 from 2 - 5 pm at Manchester Memorial Funeral Home in Whiting NJ. The funeral will be at 10:45 am on Wednesday August 28 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton RC Church, Whiting NJ.

2019-Aug-25In a rare burst of “original journalistic reporting”, I went to Alma Mater’s Day to the Races at Monmouth Park.
By way of full disclosure, I really went because my young and beautiful fiancé, Ms. Anna Marie Henno, love to bet the nags. While she really prefers the trotters, she was happy to sample the more cultured and refined atmosphere of the flats. (Ever seen old Jaspers gambling?) Luckily, she only lost ten bucks. (For a small consulting fee, I’m sure she’d share her “winning strategy”. I’ll give you a hint “OPM”.) I OTOH lost my shirt.
In any event, it was funny to see alumni older than me. Like Sweeney, Peter K. (MC1964) and Joyce, Andrew (MC1964).
While I was there, Jasper Louis Lamatina shares the June 2019 President’s notes and thought that the Jasper Jottings community would appreciate the hard work that goes into keeping Alma Mater running.

Tallahassee - Michael J. DeLorenzo 70, of Tallahassee, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2019.
A son of the late Maurice DeLorenzo and the late Marie Maddaloni DeLorenzo, he was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 1, 1949.
He held a degree in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College. After serving in the US Army, he spent most of his career with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. After retiring from FEMA, he worked for the Florida Division of Emergency Management, retiring as Deputy Division Director. He worked tirelessly to serve communities, the state of Florida and the nation in his over 50 year career. He was a highly respected leader among leaders in the field of Emergency Management, receiving the Florida Distinguished Service Medal twice.
He was a loving husband to Idy Codington, a brother to Elaine DeLorenzo, Maureen Delorenzo and Ginger Simpler, a devoted father to Veronica DeLorenzo Castleberry, Michael Joseph DeLorenzo III, and son-in-law John Castleberry. He dearly loved his grandchildren, Luke Castleberry and Emma Grace Castleberry.
The Memorial Service is from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM, Wednesday, August 28th, 2019 at Culley's MeadowWood on Timberlane, with Gathering of Family and Friends to follow at 3:00 PM. Poughkeepsie - Nicholas J. Raccioppo, 70, a 42 year resident of Poughkeepsie, died Saturday, August 24, 2019. He was born in New York City, the son of Nicholas and Maria (Losacco) Raccioppo. He graduated from Manhattan College and moved to Poughkeepsie shortly after marrying his wife, Stephanie (Novak) at Assumption Church in Peekskill on August 22, 1970. They have three children.
Nick was an IBM Project Manager in Poughkeepsie for over 30 years and retired in January 2009. He was also a member of the PMI Hudson Valley Chapter, former President and Tournament Director of the Town of Poughkeepsie Soccer Club (TOPSC), and a board member for the East Hudson Youth Soccer League. Nick continued to volunteer for the soccer clubs long after his own boys aged out of the program.
In addition to enjoying his volunteer work with soccer, Nick was an avid fan of classic rock and enjoyed attending rock concerts, local plays and poker nights with friends. Nick also enjoyed vacations with his family, including adventures to upstate New York, California and multiple trips to Disney World with his grandchildren. He took great pride in caring for his family and friends.
Nick leaves behind his beloved wife, Stephanie; his daughter, Nicole and her husband Pete Cookingham; his sons, Michael and Marc; grandchildren Brooke Raccioppo, Sean Murphy, Ashley Cookingham; and great grandchild, Kaiden Raccioppo. He also leaves behind his sister, Eleanor Raccioppo and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Family will receive their friends on Monday, August 26, 2019 from 4 to 8pm at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 11 am at St. Mary's Church, Clinton Street in Wappingers Falls.

When Minik was 12, he was finally able to sail back to Greenland, but he didn’t receive the homecoming he had hoped for. He was a foreigner in his own land; he didn’t belong in Greenland either. So when he was 19, Minik returned to America. He found work in a New Hampshire lumber camp, and there, he contracted influenza during the epidemic of 1918, and died.

LOUDONVILLE Thomas A. O'Brien, 82, entered eternal life on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Born in Albany, he was the son of Edgar T. and Helene Schaefer O'Brien. Mr. O'Brien graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in 1955, received his degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College in 1959, and earned his M.B.A. at R.P.I. in 1966.
Thomas was a dedicated employee of Norton Company in Watervliet, with over 35 years of service.
He was a past member of the Town of Colonie Conservation Advisory Council, and a longtime board member of the Northeast Career Planning.
Thomas enjoyed many things in life, but most of all he was most proud of his family and he loved spending time with children, grandchildren and other family and friends. He was the dear husband of Dorothea Henderer O'Brien; loving father of Thomas A. O'Brien Jr. (Clare), Daniel E. O'Brien (Lara), Cynthia O. Knox (Roger), Stephen F. O'Brien (Lisa) and Jennifer J. O'Brien (Nicholas Rossettos); cherished grandfather of Calvin and Garrett O'Brien, Kevin and Austin Knox, Kathryn and Christopher O'Brien, Zoe and Miles Rossettos; brother of Edward O'Brien (Constance) and Michael O'Brien (Diana). Thomas is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staffs of Living Resources, Shaker Place, and The Community Hospice for their comforting care.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Thomas's family on Saturday, August 31, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Loudonville. This Morning, Marianne Reilly shared the very sad news of the death of Bob Otten. Marianne heard from Rebecca, Bob's Wife, earlier today. Bob was called home peacefully last night, August 30, 2019.
As I said a few weeks ago, when with Bob, I knew I was in the presence of a good man. It was a feeling shared by many others. Bob was a man great of love, compassion, giving, stature and accomplishment. A proud Jasper and Friend of the College. Bob did what he did in helping others and he did it quietly without fanfare and surely not expecting accolades. Bob will be missed by so many. He was a friend to many of us.
Per Bob's request, there will be no visiting hours or Service. Interment will be at a later date in Camden, Maine where Bob and Rebecca met and Married. We pray for the repose of the soul of this good man, we pray for Rebecca, their Children Barbara, Christine, Robert, Derek, Justin and their Family and Friends as they mourn the loss of their loved one. Thank you Marianne.

Dear Phil,
Thanks for sending. Your description of him is right on. Just a few weeks ago when Bob called to say goodbye, he conveyed the fact that he knew his life on this earth was near but that he had no regrets and did not fear death. A truly great and generous man who will be missed by many.
