POSITRACTION: West Elmira Fire Department goes above and beyond

When Mom is Whisked to Hospital After Kitchen Accident, Firefighters Stay Behind to Take Care of Things
By McKinley Corbley - Jan 7, 2019

*** begin quote ***

The firefighters who rushed to Rachel Schoonover’s aid last month did a lot more than just ensure her imminent safety.

The 6th grade teacher had been washing dishes at her home in Elmira, New York when a wine glass suddenly shattered and cut an artery in her wrist.

“Instantly, blood was everywhere, spraying all corners of my kitchen,” Schoover wrote in a Facebook post. “I wrapped it up in a towel, called 911, called my mom, and continued to bleed everywhere.”

Responders from the Elmira Fire Department were the first to arrive on the scene, and as they tied a tourniquet around Schoonover’s arm to slow the bleeding, they simultaneously helped her son Declan into his pajamas and kept the two of them calm as they waited for an ambulance.

*** and ***

“These men wiped down my fridge, coffee maker, speakers, cupboards, bathtub, floors, and even individual K-cups that had been hit. They put the dirty towels in my bathtub, threw away the glass, and cleaned up the blood in my sink.”

*** end quote ***

A real act of kindness.  Hopefully, not forgotten.  And, a lesson to us all.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Robert P. 'Bob' Otten '55 BS

2019-Jul-29

Good Afternoon All,

On Saturday, July 27, 2019, Mike McEneney, received a call from Bob Otten whom many of us know. Bob was calling to say goodbye because he was informed by his Doctors that he has a hole in his heart that is inoperable and that his days are numbered.

True to Bob's way, he confronted the problem and began to deal with it. He has shared that his days are short but his outlook is positive. Bob is in hospital at this time but will shortly be transferred to another institution.

Many of us know that Bob and Junius Kellogg were Classmates, roommates and good Friends at Manhattan and after Graduation. Yes, Basketball, was a bond but the real bond was their friendship. After Junnie's accident, Bob was his Advocate, Financial Advisor and supporter in so many ways.

Bob, is a man with a big and giving heart who has helped so many. The several times I have met Bob, I have always felt I was in the presence of a truly good man. Please raise the volume for this good Man, his Wife Rebecca, their Children, Barbara, Christine, Robert, Derek and Justin during this difficult time. We pray that Bob's days are comfortable, full of love and wonderful memories.

Thank you Bob for being you. God Bless.

The Hudson Independent
Our Schools
Interim SH High Athletic Director Looks to Revive Sports Programs
by Tom Pedulla –

*** begin quote ***

Michael Gulino, who became the interim athletic director at Sleepy Hollow High School on July 1, is thinking big while admitting he has relatively little time to revive some of the school’s sagging sports programs.

Gulino spoke of his desire to have “a great athletic program across the board for all kids in all sports.” The circumstances surrounding his appointment, though, will make it difficult for that to become a reality any time soon.

“That’s my goal,” he said. “Can I do it in one year? I don’t know if I can do it in one year, but we’re definitely going to work at putting the pieces in place to have a great system moving forward and start to work at building it to where it should be, at the top of Section 1 athletics.”

Gulino, 64, emphasized that long-term answers will have to come from someone else. He retired in June 2015 and noted that his appointment is for one year. He succeeds Denise Kiernan, who resigned after an undistinguished two-year stint that left certain programs, such as football, with a long climb back merely to regain respectability. Kiernan resigned amid widespread dissatisfaction with her performance and that of numerous teams.

Christopher Borsari, superintendent of schools, acknowledged the need to do better when he said in a press release announcing the hiring of Gulino that the interim athletic director “will be tasked with reviewing our athletic program through an athletic study process focused upon improving the athletic experience of students.”

Gulino spent most of his career in the Byram Hills Central School District in Armonk. He was a middle school health teacher there for 20 years and the athletic director at the high school for another 14 years. He graduated from Manhattan College and holds Master’s degrees from Columbia University Teachers College and Lehman College.

Gerald James Markey, aka Jerry, passed away on July 29, 2019. He was born a first generation American in New York City on February 6, 1935, and grew up in The Bronx as the only child of John and Mary Markey, Irish immigrants. He attended Mt. He retired in 2001, and began his series of "retirement jobs" with Walden Golf Club, the public library, and Toth Distribution Services; he also traveled, including his lifelong dream: a trip to the Holy Land in Jerusalem in 2011.

Jerry was proud of his Irish heritage and was a member of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, Charles Carroll Division. He was an avid sports fan, ardently rooting for his NY Giants, NY Rangers, Mets, the Baysox, and later the Nationals. Leo's Obituary
U.S. Veteran

Leo Edward Barron, 86, of Gales Ferry, Connecticut, a devoted husband and father who was known for his strong Catholic faith, love of country and sharp sense of humor, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2019, surrounded by his loving, grateful children.

He leaves behind five children, 19 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Born the fourth of five children to William and Angela Barron in New York, N.Y., on Dec. 7, 1932, Leo attended the Good Shepherd School and Cardinal Hayes High School, before earning a bachelor’s degree in business from Manhattan College in 1958.

In 1958, he met the love of his life, the former Lorraine McColl, in New York City’s Inwood Lounge. The two were married in 1960 and shared “54 years and one week’’ together, before she passed away on April 30, 2014.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from August 1952 to July 1954, and had a distinguished, 25-year career in the U.S. Navy Reserve, retiring as a Commander.

Leo joined the Naval Investigative Service (NIS) in 1960, beginning a successful career as a special agent. His career would take his family to Port Orchard, Washington; Mundelein, Illinois, and Marlton, New Jersey, during his 25-year career. They also lived in the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and Guam, before they settled in Gales Ferry in 1981.

Retiring from NIS in 1985, he embarked on a successful 15-year career as a private investigator. In 2002, in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Leo returned to work with NIS, traveling to London, England; Rota, Spain and Naples, Italy.

A very active parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Gales Ferry since 1981, he served as a lector, Eucharistic minister and volunteered for Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

In 2018, Leo established the Leo E. and Lorraine A. Barron Endowment within the Catholic Foundation in order to support the parish and its outreach.

“I have been so blessed to have been married to my best friend for over 50 years,’’ he said at the time. “Our marriage resulted in five great adults to give the world, who, in turn, married and are raising more soldiers for Christ.’’

Leo was a past Grand Knight and longtime active member of the Knights of Columbus and the Ledyard Lions Club. He also enjoyed serving on the Blue Mass Committee for the Diocese of Norwich, Connecticut.

An incurable sports fanatic, he could always be counted on for the latest news, trades and scores of his beloved New York Yankees and the New York Football Giants. A die-hard Yankees fan, Leo was known to verbally joust with anyone who didn’t share such allegiance. “You look too smart to be a Red Sox fan,” he’d say, lightheartedly, to many of his New England friends.

A season ticket holder for 50 years, he’d cheer on his New York Giants in any kind of weather, with Lorraine and other family and friends by his side at Giants Stadium.

He also loved to travel and visit his children and grandchildren, thinking nothing of hours-long drives or flights to support them at their school and sporting events.

During his retirement, he and Lorraine visited Ireland, and took cruises to Alaska and Nova Scotia. They also made dozens of trips to Lorraine’s favorite place, Walt Disney World.

In recent months, as his health waned and surged, Leo made no secret of the fact that he looked forward to eternal life. “I’m rounding third,’’ he’d say with gratitude for the joyfully full life he’d been blessed with. A man of deep faith, he’d note that he was not afraid to slide into home, head first.

Surviving are his two daughters, Jeanne Knudsen (Paul) of Ridge, New York, and Kerri Ann Charette (Brian) of Gales Ferry; three sons, William (Michelle) of Long Valley, New Jersey, Daniel (Ann Marie) of Long Valley, New Jersey, and Matthew (Jodi) of Memphis, Tennessee.

He is also survived by 19 grandchildren: Thomas (Lindsay), James (Elizabeth), John and Mark Knudsen; Kevin (Allison), Peter, Conor, Patrick, Kelly, Amy, Leo, Brett, Luke and Shane Barron, and Andrew, Matthew, Christopher, Summer and Joy Charette. Additionally, he is survived by one great-granddaughter, Sydney Knudsen.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday August 6th from 5-7 pm at the Byles Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames Street Groton, Connecticut. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 am Wednesday August 7th at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Gales Ferry, Connecticut. Interment will follow with military honors at Gales Ferry Cemetery.

The family suggests donations be directed to the Leo E. and Lorraine A. Barron Endowment Fund at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Route 12, Gales Ferry, CT 06335 or St. Jude Children's Hospital 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Historian: More Evidence Commies Tried To Kill JPII

Mehmet Ali Agca met repeatedly with Soviet intel handlers in the months before he made his unsuccessful attempt on Saint John Paul II’s life on May 13, 1981, notes George Weigel at First Things. “What we do not have is documentary evidence that all of this was done on the direct orders of [KGB boss] Yuri] Andropov or Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev or both.” But now intriguing new evidence is coming to light. It’s all “thanks to an achingly dull, three-volume history of the schedule of Leonid Brezhnev, published three years ago.” Trawling through it, Polish historian Andrzej Grajewski found that although “Brezhnev did not meet all that often with Andropov, the KGB spymaster . . . the tempo of their meetings increased dramatically in April and May 1981, as did the frequency of their phone conversations.” On the fateful day, moreover, Brezhnev cleared his schedule, as if (Grajewski writes) his “attention was not absorbed by acting, directing, managing — but perhaps waiting for something to happen.” Weigel archly concludes: “Inquiring minds wonder.”

Now I like to think that I am up on all the Conspiracy Theories, but somehow I missed this one.

Upon reflection, it seem to have some some evidence to support it.
