12 Middle School Boys Are Being Hailed for Talking Woman Out of Taking Her Own Life
By McKinley Corbley - Apr 9, 2019

*** begin quote ***

These middle school students are being hailed as heroes after they helped to talk a woman out of committing suicide last week.

The 12 young heroes, all of whom are members of the boys volleyball team from Kepler Neighborhood School in Fresno, California, had been jogging through the streets for their training when they saw the woman climb over the edge of a bridge.

Had she let go, she would have fallen 100 feet onto the train tracks below – but luckily, the boys took action.

The team members ran to their coach Elliot Murray, yelling for him to call 911. When he saw the woman hanging from the bridge, he told the boys to run back and do everything in their power to keep her from jumping.

“I immediately told the kids, ‘Do everything you can, chant, say ‘Stop, your life is worth it’ – and they just kept on chanting,” Murray told WPVI.

Sure enough, the boys spent the next 10 minutes with the 47-year-old woman, yelling words of encouragement and urging her to climb up from the ledge.

Upon hearing their compassionate chants, the woman finally crossed back over to safety just before police officers arrived on the scene.

*** end quote ***

Good action by these young men.  How many of us would have the presence of mind to do this?

One can only hope that this inspires folks with what is possible.

From Tom:

As inevitable as the day was, it was still a bit of a shock to get the phone call yesterday morning. My mother had a really nice visit with just the two of them Saturday evening and I think that dad took comfort in knowing it was his time to go and he went peacefully in his sleep during the night. I know that grief is the price we pay for love and he was greatly loved... he will be greatly missed.

Thanks, of course, for all of the prayerful wishes during his time of illness these last few years. My mother, sisters, and I really appreciate it.

HAMPTON, Va. – On Saturday night, Hampton University honored three former student-athletes with the highest athletic honor possible in front of a packed Student Center Ballroom – induction into the Hampton University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Walter “Fuzzy” Ward, Thomasina Busch Cunningham and Darryl Skinner joined a prestigious group of inductees as the newest members of the Hall of Fame.

*** and ***

Walter “Fuzzy” Ward began playing basketball at George P. Phenix High School in 1954. When he entered then Hampton Institute he developed into a record-setting scorer. Ward was a three-year team captain, team MVP as a senior as well as First Team All-CIAA. Outstanding on offense and defense, Ward played 86 consecutive games and closed out his collegiate career by scoring 23 points to break Hampton’s all-time scoring record in 1961.

He earned a B.S. degree in Physical Education from Hampton (Institute) University and an M.S. degree in Special Education from Manhattan College (NYC).

Ward was the first player drafted from Hampton into the NBA as the Detroit Pistons selected him in the eighth round of the 1961 draft. He was also drafted by the Washington, D.C. franchise of the now defunct American Basketball League. Unfortunately, he was unable to accept either offer, however, as he was required to comply with the military draft at the time.

Following his Army career, he taught, coached and mentored students in the New York City and Westchester County public school systems for over 35 years. Ward passed away in 2007 and was inducted posthumously into the Hampton Roads African American Sports Hall of Fame, along with local legends including Alonzo Mourning, William “Shorty” Gray, Darren Perry, and Lisa Rice.

Sleepy Hollow Grad Overcomes Injuries to Become Champion College Runner
by Tom Pedulla

When Joe Ryan recruits student-athletes for the track and field team at Manhattan College, he often searches for diamonds in the rough. He sure found one in Will Stallings of Sleepy Hollow. “If you have a fair amount of talent and you’ve got character, you can go a long, long way,” Ryan said of his approach.

Although Stallings was not highly sought after while he attended Sleepy Hollow High School, strength of character eventually led him to overcome two career-threatening hip surgeries to become the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s 400-meter outdoor champion this spring as a senior. In addition, he was part of Manhattan’s bronze-medal-winning 4×400 relay team and took fourth at 200 meters.

He has consistently been a member of the conference’s All-Academic team. His outstanding accomplishments in the classroom will allow him to attend medical school. The 6’ 1” Stallings immediately justified Ryan’s confidence as a freshman when his time of 46.5 seconds at 400 meters allowed him to rank 19th nationally. He suffered two torn hip labrums when he was a sophomore that ultimately required surgery and placed his athletic future in doubt.

“There were some dark days,” Stallings said, “where I really thought I wasn’t going to come back.”

He now refers to the injuries as a “blessing in disguise” because they led him to realize the importance of his studies. “Once the injury came around,” he said, “it was like, ‘Okay, what do I have left? What else do I have that I can control in my life? How else am I going to succeed and be the best person I can be?’ And it was academics.”

He majored in kinesiology with a double minor in chemistry and biology. He praised Manhattan’s small-school atmosphere, saying he benefited tremendously from the individual attention his professors gave him.

Obituary
Send Flowers

Charles F. Cheswick, PE Born on 5/31/1934 in Brooklyn. Charlie, known as Duke since becoming a grandfather 13 years ago, was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and was a lifelong, passionate and unforgiving Brooklyn Dodgers fan. He lived in Breezy Point, Queens — during the summer as a child and a year round resident when he married his loving wife, Brigitte, and as they raised their family.

He attended St John’s in Brooklyn for high-school, received an engineering degree from Manhattan College and played and loved baseball always. He served valiantly in the US Navy.

He embraced life, was a good friend and neighbor and always lent a hand. He spent his career improving public works, such as vast improvements to the Theater District in Manhattan and each of NYC’s airports, as a dedicated civil engineer.

As a father, he attended countless swim meets, softball games, tennis matches and any opportunity to cheer on one of his three daughters; he was the consummate encouraging and supportive fan to his girls. He sailed his cherished sunfish, sometimes dangerously, in unchartered territories in Jamaica Bay. He was also an integral member of the championship Huggy Bear softball team, of the Breezy Point Sunday Adult league.

As a youngster, it was Charlie who hit the first home-run under the then new lighting system as recounted by many who were there. He was an avid letter writer and put together a series of his most impactful letters and suggestions to public officials and CEOs in a book called My Pen, where he argued for emergency safety protocols (which resulted in changes being implemented on the Disney monorail), traffic suggestions and countless others. He is also the beloved author of a unique and much loved children's book, Drizzles, which tells the cautionary tale of water conservation in an action packed and hopeful tale. Duke was a visionary and had many ideas to make the world a better and more interesting place, including Serenity in Space, which sought to bring the dearly departed to space.

We wish Duke much peace and love on his journey to the heavens. He is survived by Brigitte, his loving and cherished wife of 49 years. As well as his three daughters and their families: Cindy Cheswick Capone and Joe Capone and their children Caleb, Peyton and Cassius; Kim Cheswick Williamson and Bret Williamson and their children Aidan and Wren; and Jenn Cheswick Satta and Herve Satta and their children Ascanio and Eli. He is also survived by his brother, Frank Cheswick, and sisters, Mary Henley and Margie Henderson.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Dave

2019-Jun-06

Phil Colon
1:35 AM

Good Evening All,

Mike McEneney asks for our continued prayers for Dave Rice, Son-in-Law of Mike's good Friend, the late Tom Kelleher '53. Dave has been in our prayers and we need to raise the volume for this good man and his Family.

Dave's Wife, Jane (Tom's Daughter) has shared an update as she asks for our prayers for Dave as he begins his 4th round of Chemo and has experienced a set-back and spreading of his Cancer.

This loving Family is an inspiration and tribute to love, support, sharing and hope during good times and not so good. Below is Jane's update. Please raise the volume for Dave and his beautiful Family.

Thank you Jane. Thank you all. God Bless.

From Mrs. Jane Rice

It’s been quite a while since our last update. We have been trying to just embrace life every day. This has been an extremely tough month for our family. Dave’s last CT scan at the end of April showed a blockage of his left ureter (the tube that goes from his kidney to his bladder). After a urogram he went in for a procedure to place a stent in the ureter with the intent to fully drain his kidney.

During that procedure the surgeon saw a tumor in his bladder which totally took us by surprise as it never showed up on any CT scan. They did a biopsy of the tumor which later was determined to be esophageal adenocarcinoma in the bladder. They were also able to determine that the ureter was being pinched from the outside versus something blocking the inside. Dave has also been complaining of back pain since at least December around the wing bone area.

We really thought that is was muscular pain. You know Dave, he’s always pushing himself to the limit trying to get back in shape. He has been to four different masseuses many times along with weeks of physical therapy all with very short-term relief. It was now suggested that he have an ultrasound of his back which in turn dictated a pet scan of his back last Saturday.

The results came back to show that his disease is progressing. It is now in both lungs, his liver, bladder, back muscles and humerus bone. This is devastating news to say the least. Dave will be starting his fourth round of chemo this week.

We, as a family, are trying very hard to be positive and embrace every moment that we get. We take time to spend as a family as often as possible. Thanks to our two fabulous girls, we keep laughing along this journey. This weekend we were able to camp and fish with Dave's nephew Corey and his buddies. Dave spent some time working with the girls on their fly fishing skills. Very cool!

Feel free to give him a call or stop in. He’s going to need a lot of family and friend time to help him through

JEMAIL: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) on D-Day

2019-Jun-06

Good Afternoon All,

On this special day, June 6, 2019, when we celebrate and remember the Allied Landing at Normandy, France, 75 years ago on June 6, 1944, we remember those that gave so much. The United States maintains 25 Military Cemeteries in Europe where more than 130,000 men and women are buried and another 124,000 Missing in Action are Memorialized. They are beautiful and magnificent places that arose from the horror of War and Honor our Fallen. We have nothing to apologize for. Last July, I visited Normandy and still feel the majesty, pride and sense of great loss that I felt when I walked upon that hallowed ground. 9388 are buried there. An amazing place as are the other 24 in Europe.

I have taken the liberty of sharing the following (which happens to be a Commercial with no words spoken nor needed). It was sent to me by a dear friend and U.S. Army Veteran that I admire and respect, Ed Riely. Ed shared it on Memorial day and it gets to the heart of remembering today as well. Thank you, God Bless and God Bless America.

Colon, Philip J. (MC1962)

Food City is a Southern grocery store chain with headquarters in Bristol, Tennessee.

This is their one-minute commercial. Not a word spoken and none is needed.

Very few commercials deserve to go viral. This one does.

San Francisco Giants Prospect Rankings: Top 5 Catchers
by Joel Reuter 13 seconds ago Follow @JoelReuterBR

*** begin quote ***

As the San Francisco Giants get set to embark on a full-scale rebuild, more attention than ever will be paid to the current state of the farm system.

With the 2019 MLB draft now in the rearview and a fresh collection of talent set to join the farm system ranks, we’ll take a position-by-position look at the top prospects at each position for the San Francisco Giants. First up, the catchers.

*** and ***

5. Fabian Pena, High-A (22 years old)

A 25th-round pick out of Manhattan College in 2018, Pena hit .309/.376/.588 with 16 extra-base hits in 110 plate appearances in rookie ball after signing last year.

He made the jump straight to High-A this season where he has been serving as the backup to Joey Bart.

Pena draws strong marks from his athleticism behind the plate and his strong receiving skills, giving him a strong backup catcher profile. The 22-year-old also has some pop, though, and it will be interesting to see how he develops offensively.

JNEWS: Frank Crowley (MC1934) was overlooked by Sports Illustrated

A monument to Olympian Frank Crowley
By TOM HALEY Staff Writer 22 hrs ago

*** begin quote ***

I once said to Joe Crowley something like, “You must have attended the 1932 Olympics when your bother competed, right?”

He didn’t and I will never forget his response: “Los Angeles? Hell, we couldn’t afford to go to Center Rutland.”

Rutland High School graduate Frank Crowley was one of Vermont’s greatest athletes. He was an All-American runner at Manhattan College, a member of that school’s Hall of Fame and competed in the 1500 meters in the Olympics.

When Sports Illustrated compiled its list of the 50 greatest athletes of the century for each state, Crowley was omitted from the list. An injustice. A gross oversight.

First on that list was Olympic skier Andrea Mead Lawrence and deservedly so.

But somewhere among the 50 there had to be a place for Crowley to join Andrea Mead Lawrence among that cavalcade of stars.

He was forgotten but shouldn’t be again. When they consider subjects for future statues in Rutland, his name should be among the candidates.

If they ever run out of space in downtown Rutland, a Frank Crowley statue in the park in Proctor near the starting line for the race that bears the name of his family would be fitting.

Sunday, the Crowley Brothers Memorial will carry on the name of this great Rutland family with the event named for Frank and his brothers Joe and Larry.

But it would be a fitting tribute for our other Rutland Olympian to have his own legacy chiseled in marble.

ENDNOTE: Noa Pothoven, teen euthanized in the Netherlands

SLIPPERY SLOPE: TEEN EUTHANIZED FOR 'INSUFFERABLE' LIFE
Assisted-suicide pioneer regrets allowing it for depression
ART MOORE

*** begin quote ***

Explaining that the pain of a childhood rape was “insufferable,” a 17-year-old Dutch girl took advantage of the Netherlands’ assisted suicide law and was euthanized on Sunday.

In her autobiography, “Winning or Learning,” Noa Pothoven recounted her battles with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anorexia after being molested and raped as a young child, reported News.com.au.

*** end quote ***

I can’t imagine what this young woman went through to get to the point in her life where she would make such a horrendous irreversible decision.

I think one thing that we, as a culture, have failed to do is have a national conversation about life and the “right” associated with it.  We have never decided to recognize when human life begins so that’s why it’s always a fight?  We’ve never agreed when does a human being have “rights” — at conception, at birth, at 18, at 21, at some point from zero to 21, or when they can fight for them?  And, finally, it’s not enough to say we, as a society, grant someone their “rights” if we condemn them to a miserable life of suffering.

Maybe if we, as a society, have this conversation, then we can have peace.
