POSITRACTION: ‘Great Green Wall’ in Africa

Dozens of Countries Have Been Working to Plant ‘Great Green Wall’ – and It’s Holding Back Poverty
By McKinley Corbley - Mar 31, 2019

*** begin quote ***

More than 20 African countries have joined together in an international mission to plant a massive wall of trees running across the continent – and after a little over a decade of work, it has reaped great success.

The tree-planting project, which has been dubbed The Great Green Wall of Africa, stretches across roughly 6,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) of terrain at the southern edge of the Sahara desert, a region known as the Sahel.

The region was once a lush oasis of greenery and foliage back in the 1970s, but the combined forces of population growth, unsustainable land management, and climate change turned the area into a barren and degraded swath of land.

After decades of political collaboration, the Great Green Wall project was finally launched by 11 countries in 2007.

The initiative has since recruited at least nine additional countries to plant drought-resistant acacia trees across the entire width of the continent. Though the wall is currently only about 15% percent complete, it has already dramatically impacted the participating countries.

Over 12 million acres (5 million hectares) of degraded land has been restored in Nigeria; roughly 30 million acres of drought-resistant trees have been planted across Senegal; and a whopping 37 million acres of land has been restored in Ethiopia – just to name a few of the states involved.

Sounds like a great idea.

Wonder if we could do it here in the USA?

Bury some of the Interstates with “animal migration overpasses” and it’s possible?

MNEWS: Ann Marie Flynn wants her original teaching job

Former prof sues college claiming she was pushed out
Ann Marie Flynn wants her original teaching job back at Manhattan College
Posted May 19, 2019 — By HEATHER J. SMITH

*** begin quote ***

A former tenured professor says Manhattan College was wrong to allegedly push her out of her job after more than 20 years at the school, claiming in a human rights commission complaint and a lawsuit filed in Bronx County Supreme Court that administrators discriminated against her over gender and perceived disability.

Up until a few years ago, Ann Marie Flynn was chair of Manhattan College’s chemical engineering department — a program she says was once listed with the likes of Princeton University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology as among the top chemical engineering programs in the nation.

She took family medical leave in January 2014 to care for her cancer-stricken husband and to deal with her own depression over his illness, according to complaints filed with the Bronx Supreme Court and the city’s human rights commission. When Flynn tried to return, she claims provost William Clyde and engineering school dean Tim Ward demoted her, prevented her from returning to work, solicited student complaints against her, and ultimately called a termination hearing she says violated the college’s employee policy, according to the human rights complaint.

*** and ***

Wade, Fabe and Clyde did not respond to requests on Monday to comment.

The lawsuit comes nearly a year after some students picketed outside Flynn’s disciplinary hearing, claiming the school was giving her an unfair shake.

“How can you pick at someone for being loud in a classroom?” asked Nicole May at the time, a Manhattan College alum who once had Flynn has a professor. “It was nitpicking. All she did was push her kids, and you’re going to try to terminate her for that?”

Flynn also seeks attorney’s fees and unspecified monetary damages.

Even after years of hard work, Devon Greene still could not believe he made it to graduation day. Clad in cap and gown on Friday, the 28-year-old from the south Bronx received his communications degree from Manhattan College.

“I am still in disbelief," he said. "Not because I suffer from impostor syndrome or feel unworthy, but because people coming from incarceration aren’t supposed to go on to obtain bachelor’s degrees."

Greene has excelled beyond many of his peers who have gone through the criminal justice system.

We’re moving forward with the times and are committed to being at the forefront of everything premium for sound.”

One of Falborn’s first tasks will be to add a new member to the studio’s team of producers. “We want to ensure that our producers have the support they need so that projects are managed with utmost efficiency, even when the studio is operating at capacity,” she observed.

VREELAND--James Joseph, beloved husband of Joan, devoted father of James and Kristen, loving father-in-law of Arismendys Frias, adored grandfather of Brian, Alex, and Aris passed away peacefully on May 15, 2019, at the age of 86.

Born in Brooklyn, James attended Bishop Loughlin High School before entering the religious order of the Brothers of the Christian Schools as Brother Cosmas Gregory. After earning a Ph.D. in philosophy at Saint Louis University, he joined the Manhattan College faculty.

He left the Brothers in 1969, taking a position at IBM as a writer and then manager in publications.

Upon retirement, he returned to teaching at Ulster County Community College and the New York state prison in Napanoch. Committed to civil rights, James participated in the 1963 March on Washington, and introduced his many students to the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. Among his many hobbies were writing, taking his grandchildren to the Bronx Zoo, and the New York Times daily crossword puzzle.

A mass will be offered at the De La Salle Chapel at Manhattan College on June 16, 2019 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Wildlife Conservation Society.

ENDNOTE: MIT Robot Solves Rubik’s Cube

MIT Robot Solves Rubik’s Cube in 0.38 Seconds
posted by Jason Kottke   May 16, 2019

*** begin quote ***

A robot built by a pair of engineering students at MIT can solve a Rubik’s Cube in 0.38 seconds (which happens to be 19 minutes and 59.22 seconds shorter than my fastest time):

While this is an “easy” problem in my mind for a robot, it’s still impressive.

What a great gift to humanity.  Just think of all the cubes being solved.

Obviously, that’s tongue in cheek.

But, it does give one a feel for the speed that a robot can apply to a tough problem for a human without specialized knowledge, training, and skill.

We can relegate all the routine and mundane to the robots and move up the value chain.  At least, until the robots rise up and take over.
