POSITRACTION: “Man With the Golden Arm” donated blood nearly every week for 60 years

James Harrison, known as the "Man With the Golden Arm," has donated blood nearly every week for 60 years.
By Doug Criss, CNN

*** begin quote ***

Most people, when they retire, get a gold watch. James Harrison deserves so much more than that.

Harrison, known as the “Man With the Golden Arm,” has donated blood nearly every week for 60 years. After all those donations, the 81-year-old Australian man “retired” Friday. The occasion marked the end of a monumental chapter.

According to the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, he has helped saved the lives of more than 2.4 million Australian babies.

First, a note about antibodies

Harrison’s blood has unique, disease-fighting antibodies that have been used to develop an injection called Anti-D, which helps fight against rhesus disease.

This disease is a condition where a pregnant woman’s blood actually starts attacking her unborn baby’s blood cells. In the worst cases, it can result in brain damage, or death, for the babies.

An amazing contribution to humanity.

JBLOGGER: Petrone, Louis S. "Key West Lou" (MC1957) remembers Goebel, Roger [MC1957 RIP]

2018-May-13

ROGER J. GOEBEL DIED
Posted on May 6, 2018 by keywestlou

*** begin quote ***

Roger J. Goebel met his Maker on April 20, 2018. Roger was 82.

The meeting had to be an interesting one. Roger an intellectual. A genius. Few could match his mental acumen.

Roger’s life was committed to the law. The last 33 years as a Professor at Fordham Law. He might very well be serving as a counselor to the Lord today.

Strange I am writing about Roger today. The last time I saw him was on the day we both graduated from Manhattan College in 1957. My only connection with him since has occasionally reading about him in the news. Prior to teaching law, he was a partner with an international law firm. He spent many years in the firm’s Paris office.

Roger and I developed a strange relationship. He was beyond me mentally. I doubt anyone was of his intellectual level. Which meant he was a loner.

For some reason, we became friends in our last two years at Manhattan. We would walk one or two evenings a week around the campus chatting. Sometimes at his level, sometimes at mine. I found him to be a lonely person. His intellect setting him aside from others.

God love you, Roger! Sad we never spoke again after Manhattan.

I would never have known Roger died were it not for a fellow Manhattan graduate, John Reinke. Class of 1968. Reinke publishes a weekly internet periodical Jasper Jottings. Manhattan College is known less formally as the Jaspers.

How John gets Jasper Jottings out amazes me. Alumni detail big time.

Keep up the good work, John. You help so many of us in small but important ways.

Another Manhattan graduate who also became a lawyer is presently in the news daily. Rudy Giuliani. Not a class mate of Roger and I. Giuliani graduated some 8-10 years after us.

I have spoken/written of Giuliani the past few days several times. In this blog, my newspaper column, my podcast, and Facebook live video. The man is over the hill. His time has passed.

I suspect Trump has brought him on his team as an ego booster. He is not helping him legally.

Perhaps Trump does have a genius. By keeping Giuliani at his side, he keeps the news on Giuliani and not himself.

JEMAIL: McFadden, Michael J. (MC1973) on his "endnote"

2018-May-13

Endnote looks great John! :) Let's see if we get any good further thoughts on it from MC folks on your list!

There's another element to the 60s antiwar movement that we don't have today: The Draft. Sad to say, but the self-interest element likely had a lot to do with antiwar demonstrations/activisms back then. If my memory is correct of the times, the draft lottery took a LOT of steam out of the movement as about 1/2 of "the boys" were able to pretty much stop worrying about being drafted and could just go back to getting stoned 'n lazing about with their gals. (Not that there was much "getting stoned" back in those 1970-era MC days: I remember my RA roommate Timothy seeking people who knew what pot smelled like so he could patrol his floor sniffing for pot fumes. LOL! Today they'd probably ignore the pot because "Pot Smoke was created by God and was good for us!" while searching out the Evil Tobacco Smokers because "Tobacco Smoke was created by Satan and will kill all of us!")

McFadden, Michael J. (MC1973)

# - # - # - # - #

[JR: I’m sure that’s one reason “the Draft” was eliminated.  That and it took the pressure of the politicians and bureaucrats. Charlie Rangel keeps reintroducing it — and while I rarely agree with him — it would be a way of curtailing the “American Empire” and the neocon / Military Industrial Complex from being in “eternal warfare”.  Give DJT45 credit, if peace and be achieve in Korea, then we should bring the troops home from there once and for all time.  That’s what I’d like to see.]

COMMENT: Toner, Mike (MC1972) thinks that the anti-war movement was more authentic

2018-May-13

I would disagree that the anti-war movement was always about Nixon. I remember it starting even when Johnson was still prez - "hey LBJ, how many kids did you kill today..." It continued as Nixon continued the war - then maybe took on an anti-Nixon element as the evils of his administration began to become more clear....A time of great ferment - do you remember "Jasper Liberation City" on the Quad and the chants of "no say, no pay...?"

ENDNOTE: Against "gun free" zones — just a dumb idea

2018-May-19

http://www.breitbart.com/video/2018/05/18/rand-shooters-arent-
shooting-up-the-sheriffs-office-they-go-where-there-is-no-self-defense/

Rand: Shooters Aren’t Shooting Up the Sheriff’s Office – They Go ‘Where There Is No Self-Defense’

*** begin quote ***

During an interview with the Fox News Channel on Friday, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) argued that schools can’t be defenseless and disturbed shooters “aren’t so disturbed that they’re going to shoot up the sheriff’s office. They’re showing up where there is no self-defense.”

Rand said, “I think the first thing we should do is, there needs to be an announcement by every school district that we’re going to defend our children, and that we’re not going to have a sign outside that [says], ‘We’re defenseless.’ And I think that’s the problem, is that we do have these homicidal or crazy or mentally disturbed kids, but they still aren’t so disturbed that they’re going to shoot up the sheriff’s office. They’re showing up where there is no self-defense.”

He added, “I think we get distracted. We start talking about something that Republicans and Democrats disagree with on gun control. … Look, every Hollywood actor that hates guns has armed bodyguards defending them. So, they hate guns unless the guns are defending them. Let’s announce tomorrow and let’s encourage everybody who protects our kids, superintendents, principals, school boards, announce tomorrow we’re not going to leave our kids defenseless. We are going to defend our schools from crazy people with guns.”

Rand also argued that we need to try to stop people who have psychiatric disorders that cause them to act violently and prevent people who are crazy from getting firearms. He further said there isn’t enough work being done to keep people who are mentally unstable or breaking the law from having guns.

*** end quote ***

So sad.  No mass shooting at gun shows, gun clubs, police stations, and such.  It’s all about sprinkling some sheepdogs in among the sheep.

Argh!

Criminals don’t follow laws.

Don’t get me wrong.  I don’t want guns in the hands of untrained people.  But if you’re a committed gun owner, I trust you to do the right thing.  More so than leaving people as “cannon fodder”.  If I was carrying concealed and wasn’t sure I could “safely” make the shot, I wouldn’t, and I am sure every other gun owner, would not even try.  When people are dying, they deserve all the protection that we gun owners can give them.

Will it stop every shooting, probably not.  Will it make these crazy people think twice, quite probably.  They may be crazy but they are not stupid.

*** begin quote ***

GUNS: Let’s sprinkle in a few “sheepdogs” with big teeth in the flock
Thursday, November 2nd, 2006 at 20:26
Ferdinand John Reinke

"I particularly like unlimited concealed carry. If the criminal regards the general public as sheep to be shorn, then let’s sprinkle in a few “sheepdogs” with big teeth in the flock.

Guess which gay to bash? Buzz, wrong, you picked a Pink Pistol and you’re dead!

Guess which woman to bash? Buzz, wrong, you picked a Paxton Quigly and you’re dead!

Guess which brown person to bash? Buzz, wrong, you picked a Massad Ayoob and you’re dead!"
