Officer Becomes Hero to Neighborhood Kids After Sitting Down to Play With Girls Who ‘Were Afraid of Cops’

Corporal C.B. Fleming may not run around the city wearing a cape and mask, but the neighborhood kids still call him Batman.
The 42-year-old police officer is something of a local celebrity in South Hill, Virginia. He was given the affectionate nickname after he spent an afternoon ensuring that a group of children felt safe following a gas leak.
Fleming was just one of the emergency crew members who arrived at Iesha Roper-Boswell’s home in response to the dispatch call last week. Once the house was deemed safe, he started chatting with Roper-Boswell.
As they talked, the 28-year-old mother mentioned to Fleming that her daughter, niece, and fellow neighborhood kids were afraid of cops.
She was then stunned when – shortly after their conversation – she saw Fleming lying in the grass so he could play with the children. Not only that, the kids were happy to have another playmate, regardless of his uniform.

For every “bad cop”, good Police Officers have to work a hundred times harder to make up for it.

It’s never “Here’s your hat, what’s your hurry?” at Wynono & Company, the new Cold Spring millinery that will open on Main Street just in time for Easter.
In fact, it will be the opposite, says Melanie Leonard, a Beacon resident who hopes her stock of handmade hats and colorful vintage clothing will invite lingering. “I don’t want anyone to feel intimidated about coming in,” she says.
Years ago, Leonard felt intimidated about making hats, but she became friendly with a milliner, Ashley Ruprecht, who invited Leonard to her studio and wound up training her in the classic techniques.
After “falling in love with the process,” Leonard studied with Anya Caliendo, who does couture millinery. “By then I was able to make a good hat but not really express myself,” she recalls. “Anya is a strong Russian woman. She told me when things were awful, which was perfect for me! Each week you made a new style. Anya taught me true technique with her assessment of ‘nyet’ after hours of handstitching! I learned patience. Now I understand that it’s how someone feels in the hat that matters, and that I shouldn’t criticize myself if one stitch isn’t perfect.”
None of this was on Leonard’s mind growing up in Londonderry, New Hampshire, where her sartorial style was atypical. “I can truthfully say I dressed differently,” she says. “At 10 I walked around like a hippie, wearing big pants, colorful shirts. My mom would buy me Gap jeans, then we would cut parts of them out and put different fabric in.”
As a teenager Leonard recalls always being drawn to New York City; she would take a 6 a.m. bus from New Hampshire to wander around Central Park, the East Village and walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, then catch the 10 p.m. train home.
She attended college in the city, studying sociology and criminal justice at Manhattan College, and two years ago made the move from Brooklyn to Beacon with her husband, Stu McLaughlin, who is a creative director at a marketing agency and a photographer. They were joined a year ago by daughter Marlo. Leonard says she finds Beacon a “nice blend of my New Hampshire and Brooklyn backgrounds.”

[JR: It’ll be “We, The Sheeple” when they don’t get their promised “benefits” because the Gooferment can no longer print money. Eventually, all fiat currencies fall to zero. Some faster than others (i.e., Zimbabwe, Venezuela) and some slower (i.e., the Roman empire; the Ottoman empire). At some point, the world will stop accepting “dollars” for products. That’s what got Saddam and Gaddafi killed — they wanted to be paid in gold for their oil. You haven’t heard much about the “golden dinar” because they realized that was a good way to bring down the wrath of the USA by messing with their monopoly on “dollars”. But like all Ponzi schemes and games of musical chairs, they end when the music stops. And "the rubes” are getting wise to the scam. One ugly chicken is coming home to roost! IMHO]

Little Silver - John Christopher (Jack) Morris, 89, Little Silver, NJ, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 18, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
He was the beloved husband of the late Clare (White) Morris. Jack was born in Jersey City, NJ to John C. Morris and Margaret (Martin) Morris. He had one brother, the late William C. Morris and one sister, the late Helen Morris. Jack was a 1951 graduate of Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York. While in college he joined the New Jersey National Guard in which he honorably served 10 years.
He married his college sweet heart, Clare. They were married for 62 years, setting an incredible example of love, faith, and devotion for their family. Together they were dedicated members of Holy Cross Parish, Rumson, NJ.
In 1956 Jack founded John C. Morris Associates, a consulting engineering firm, specializing in the design of mechanical and electrical systems. He was very proud to have eventually partnered with his oldest son and youngest daughter in the business.
Jack was past president of the Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis Club, (NJ) and the Moorings Club, Vero Beach, Florida. He was also a past member of Navesink Country Club (NJ).
With great enthusiasm, Jack taught his children how to play games, read, sail, play tennis and golf, throw a football, play basketball and ski. His greatest gift to his children was that he was a true example of family unity, strength of character, and honor. He did not have to teach his children his faith, they learned by his incredible example. He loved his sons-in-law and daughters-in-law as his own.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Patricia Morris Sharkey and his son-in-law, Bob Mattone. He is survived by his sons & daughters and their wives and husbands: Chris (Pam Richdale) Morris; Peggy (David) McGill; Andy (Maribeth Hackett) Morris; Liz (Henry) O'Hern; Bob and Kate Sharkey; Jeanne (John) Fried; Paul (Sally Ann Nidds) Morris; Sarah Morris (Michael) Schutsky; Barbara Mattone; Clare (Chris) Broderick; Richard (Jenna Holthusen) Morris.
Jack was the ultimate "Pops" to his 24 grandchildren, one step grandson, 6 grandchildren-in-law, and 3 soon-to-be grandchildren-in-law. He showered this third generation with as much love and care as he gave their parents. He felt very blessed to meet and enjoy his 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews all of whom he treasured.
A Mass of Christian burial will take place Monday, April 22, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, Rumson, NJ, with private interment to follow at a later date at St. Catharine's Mausoleum and Cemetery in Sea Girt.

Robert “Bobby” Troccoli of Buchanan, NY passed away on April 19, 2019 after a short, valiant battle with cancer.
Bobby was born on October 19, 1959 to Donald and Faith Troccoli. Bobby spent his entire life in the Montrose/Buchanan area attending the Hen Hud Schools. He was a gifted athlete in many sports and was All Section for Wrestling. Bobby graduated from Manhattan College Certified in Nuclear Power Plant Operations and Health Physics. He was also a Nationally Registered Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT).
After graduation he went on to work for the NY Power Authority and Entergy for 18 years, then traveled the country working in the Nuclear field to provide for his family before settling in at BHI Energy Power Services until his passing.
Bobby was the proud father of Matthew and Cody Troccoli and took much pride in watching them excel at all their sports while growing up. On October 23, 2005 Bobby married his beloved wife Amy Prahlow.
In 2016 they would become the proud grandparents (along with Kelli Troccoli) of Kye Kayo-Troccoli and Giovanna Grace Troccoli. There was no title Bobby loved more than “Papa Bobby”! Bobby was an avid golfer whose favorite pastime was hitting the links with his loyal friends followed by a good card game as well as watching his favorite teams the NY Mets and NY Rangers.
Bobby is survived by his loving wife Amy Troccoli, his son Matthew Troccoli, Grandchildren Kye and Giovanna Troccoli, his sister Donna and good friend and brother in law Mark Smith, Nephew Ryan Smith and Niece Nicole Smith. He is predeceased by his loving parents Donald and Faith Troccoli and his son Cody Robert Troccoli.

Raymond Pizzo
July 27, 1928 – April 20, 2019
On Saturday, April 20, 2019 Raymond S. Pizzo, loving husband and father passed away at the age of 90. Ray was born July 27, 1928 in Bronx, NY and held a degree in mathematics and computer analysis from Manhattan College.
He was married to Mary and is survived by three children; Barbara, Raymond and wife Diane, Michael and wife Patricia, two grandchildren Leanna and Nicholas.
His passion was for golf and traveling with his beloved wife Mary as they listened to Frank Sinatra and danced.
In his early years of employment he worked on the lunar space modular. He was also employed at Citibank as a Vice President for many years. He was a veteran and served in the Korean War. He was a good neighbor and his neighbors we terrific. He will be missed dearly.
The Funeral Mass will be held 11 am on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at St. Mark Catholic Church.

Saint Edmond’s Academy Head of School Brian Ray announced the hiring of two new administrators for the 2019-20 academic year.
Juliana McClellan was appointed the director of the lower form, and Steve Skolfield was appointed director of the middle and upper form.
McClellan served as a teacher in the Lower Form at Saint Edmond’s since 2015. Previously, she taught at Saint Joseph’s School-Yorkville in New York for six years. In addition to her classroom experience, McClellan has been a co-chair of the Mid-Term Accreditation team the past year and represented the school as a lower form admissions liaison. Previously, at Saint Joseph’s, she worked in the admissions department, coordinated after-school sports and was the math program coordinator. McClellan received her bachelor’s in elementary education from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and her master of school building leadership from Manhattan College in New York.

Sports was always an escape for me. I grew up a Philadelphia sports fan and saw few championships. I also attended a lot of Baltimore Orioles’ games. Like music and writing, I could leave myself for a few hours and enjoy all the action and strategy of sports. I attended most home Manhattan College basketball games and even a few road games. After an impressive season in March 1992, the Jaspers were headed to nearby Rutgers in Northern New Jersey in the first round of the NIT tournament. The school offered tickets and a bus ride for people interested. I jumped right on it.
The bus ride off to New Jersey was loud and full of energy! Larry was in full force, leading all the cheers and festivities. I swear I thought he was going to have a heart attack the way he was screaming and carrying on. We were all getting pumped up for the tournament, and getting ready to enter enemy territory.
All of us were seated together on bleachers on the left side of the arena. The Rutgers fans were very calm and collective, while we were as vocal as can be. The game was pretty close with Rutgers maintaining a lead most of the game.
Rutgers controlled most of the second half, leading the Jaspers by eight points with just four minutes left to play. Manhattan started to come back and had the ball trailing by a point with the clock running out. One of my classmates threw a layup right before the double zeros hit.It was like watching a movie as the ball circled around the rim a few times, before finding a home in the net! A true sports miracle!
After it happened, the home fans froze and were dead quiet in shock. On the other hand,we caused quite a ruckus! We were all hugging each other and screaming. Then, we all somehow got on the court! We were pointing the finger at the shocked people left in the stands chanting, “We are MC!”
The bus ride back to campus was a party! We all headed to The Terminal to watch the highlights on the evening news. We all toasted each other and chanted the whole night! In my many years watching sports, I never saw a miracle happen up and close like that in person.

Anne lived a rich and full life with people, books, writings, pets, and a home she loved. She leaves behind friends that she had since childhood and through all the stages of her life. Anne was adventurous and fun and had a great wit and laugh. She was a wonderful friend and daughter. She loved travel, camping with her parents and friends, and her days at the beach.
Her life included meeting St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, St. Pope John Paul II, Cardinals, and other famous people, but it was talking to and writing about people in her weekly editorial column that she most enjoyed - learning about the lives of others.
Anne was predeceased by her parents, William and Kathryn Buckley and her aunts and uncles. She enjoyed her last years staying in her home with the help of two wonderful aides, Nancy and Rodeline, and her friends.
The following is her obituary as it appears in Catholic New York:
Anne M. Buckley, who served as editor in chief of Catholic New York from 1991 to 2000 and had been one of the founders of the archdiocesan newspaper a decade earlier, died April 23. She was 87.
Ms. Buckley, along with Gerald M. Costello, the founding editor in chief, and Arthur McKenna, the general manager, were the team that established Catholic New York under Cardinal Terence Cooke in 1981.
During the next two decades, first as managing editor and then as editor in chief, Ms. Buckley helped to establish Catholic New York as the standard bearer among Catholic diocesan weeklies in the United States.
At her retirement in late 2000, Ms. Buckley said she found it rewarding to be part of a newspaper well-received from the start "by its readers and its peers in the Catholic and general press, a fact that enhanced the influence of the Church and contributed to its mission of evangelization."
"The job never lost its excitement," Ms. Buckley said at the time. "I will look back on it all with a measure of satisfaction."
In 2001, Ms. Buckley received the Catholic Press Association's highest honor, the St. Francis de Sales Award, which she called "a great honor and a beautiful crown to my career." Her award nomination noted she had made "many personal sacrifices to assure that Catholic New York remained a flagship paper for the Catholic press."
Ms. Buckley, ever the editor, said the first-place honors for general excellence and other prizes CNY took home in the CPA journalism competition that year were "even more precious because they represent the team effort that has gone into making Catholic New York the top diocesan paper in the country."
She was a "lifer" in the Catholic Press, having served on the staff of The Advocate, newspaper of the Archdiocese of Newark, for 29 years, beginning as a reporter right out of college and rising to managing editor, before coming to Catholic New York.
She was known for an elegant writing style most commonly evidenced in her Editor's Report columns, which were regularly cited for distinction as well as being popular with CNY readers.
Her service as editor in chief fell almost entirely during Cardinal John O'Connor's tenure as Archbishop of New York.
In a column about the cardinal, written at the time of his 80th birthday in January 2000, just months before his death that May, Ms. Buckley captured him this way:
"Cardinal O'Connor has looked for the best in all of us. It's not always easy to do that kind of job. But those of whom he has expected much are those who have grown to love him most. It showed during the 80th birthday celebrations."
The column was headlined, "New York Loves a Winner," a phrase she undoubtedly selected. Ms. Buckley was an exacting editor,
always searching for a better way to tell the story, another question to ask or one more lead to pursue.
Patrice Liquori, who interned under Ms. Buckley in the summers of 1986-1987, during her student days at Manhattan College, and later was a freelance writer for Catholic New York, called her mentor's death "a true loss."
"I can't think of a time in my professional working life when Anne wasn't a part of it," Ms. Liquori said. "She was tough, but fair."
In 1994, the Ladies of Charity of the Archdiocese of New York honored Ms. Buckley with their St. Louise de Marillac award. Cardinal O'Connor, writing in his own "From My Viewpoint" column in CNY, said Ms. Buckley's designation "was no mean feat for any newspaper editor in chief, secular or religious."
The cardinal went on to say that he did not universally agree with CNY's editorials, or its news judgment. However, his overall assessment was that Ms. Buckley published "a top-drawer, interesting, readable, sometimes provocative, always thoroughly Catholic newspaper."
He ended by citing Ms. Buckley as a "true professional, true Catholic, true newswoman."
She served as President of the Catholic Institute of the Press of New Jersey and Director of its journalism School for High School Students. In 1999 Caldwell University awarded her an Honorary Degree in Humane Letters, in 1967 the Alumna of the Year Award and in 1987 the coveted Veritas Award.
Immaculate Conception High School, her Alma Mater, inducted her into their Hall of Fame.
Ms. Buckley also served on the Board of Directors of The Christophers and the Advisory of the Catholic Spirit of the Diocese of Metuchen.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. John's Feed the Hungry Program or St. Hubert Animal Welfare Center would be appreciated.
For many years, Ms. Buckley was the caregiver to her elderly mother, Kathryn, who predeceased her.

Mount Pleasant, SC - Edward J. Galluzzo, 84, originally from Ossining, NY, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2019 in Mount Pleasant, SC.
Edward, son of the late James and Grace Galluzzo, was born in Ossining, NY on October 22, 1934. After graduating from Ossining High School, Edward completed a 4-year degree at Manhattan College in 1956 and eventually became the President and owner of J.V. Galluzzo, Inc., the construction company founded by his father, James Vincent Galluzzo.
Edward is pre-deceased by his wife, Janet, who passed on March 25, 2017 (after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis) from metastatic lung cancer.
After college, Edward (known to most of his family and friends as Ed or Eddie), served in and was honorably discharged from the US Army. Ed met Janet (then Janet Sichel from Briarcliff Manor, NY) in 1959, and they were married on October 29, 1960.
Ed and Janet raised their family and lived in Ossining until they moved to Stamford, CT in 1996. After wintering in Ft. Lauderdale, they lived there full time from 2011, until Janet's passing in 2017. A year later, Ed moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC, the home of his son James, daughter-in-law Emily, and grandsons, Ned and Jake. Ed is also survived by his daughter Donna and her wife, Lisa Gorney, of Portland, Maine.
Ed was a proud member of the Bricklayers Local 5 NY and Bricklayers International. He and Janet loved dinners out and enjoyed putting their feet in the sand in Puerto Rico, Acapulco and Bermuda. Edward was an avid golfer and always enjoyed a glass of chilled red wine. Both he and Janet were passionate NY Yankees fans, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 2010 by attending a Yankees game with their immediate family.
Because he hadn't lived in South Carolina for very long, his family has decided not to hold any services at this time. In lieu of donations or other remembrances, Edward's children would ask his friends and family to remember him through enjoying a round of golf, a dinner out or a glass of wine with loved ones.

MULRANE, James
James Patrick Mulrane, 77, of Dunwoody, Georgia, died April 23, 2019.
Jim was a proud New Yorker, born and raised in Washington Heights. He was the youngest of three children, raised by Bridget and Owen Mulrane, both Irish immigrants. He graduated from Manhattan Prep and then Manhattan College.
It was in New York that Jim met his wife of 49 years, Eileen Cunningham. The couple then relocated to Dunwoody via Jim's job with IBM. Jim and Eileen raised their two children, Kathy and Ken, in Dunwoody.
Jim made several friends through his newfound passion tennis. But Jim had always been a sports fan, cheering on his beloved Rangers, as well as the New York football and baseball Giants. He even grew to love the Atlanta Braves and Falcons, officially transplanting to Atlanta.
Jim was a two-time cancer survivor. He admirably faced those battles with a strong determination and a positive attitude.
In retirement, Jim enjoyed spending time with his growing family. He was constantly reading in order to expand his knowledge of world events and trivia, often using this information for friendly competition during episodes of Jeopardy.
The Mulrane family spent a beautiful Easter weekend together before Jim's passing. Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Eileen; son, Ken; daughter, Kathy and her husband, Chris; granddaughters, Sophie and Caroline; and sister, Ann. The Funeral Mass will be Monday, April 29, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

I had heard that Ford Motor Company was including it in their new vehicles in 2019.
It would seem that this could be useful for everyone when the technology supporting it is deployed. Street addresses are not always “good enough”. Try being a first aid squad looking to help someone off the beaten track or even on some streets and roads where addresses are not obvious. When I was living in Virginia, New Hampshire, and even the Pepuls Republik of Nu Jerzee “addresses” were not obvious because folks don’t display them.
