He served as Bishop of Portland, Maine, from 1875 to 1900. Although November is officially Black Catholic History Month, I didn’t return to Patheos until its end. So McNamara’s Blog will highlight the African American Catholic experience during Black History Month of 2019. As I’ve shared here before, this is a topic which has interested me for a long time. Growing up in 1980’s Queens, I assumed Catholics were either Irish, Italian, German, or Polish. Any African Americans I did know belonged to Protestant churches. Furthermore, I never saw a Black person in a Catholic church. Not until my senior year at Cathedral Prep Seminary did I have any classmates of African descent. *** and *** But the story of a people is more than just numbers. African American Catholics kept their faith alive in the face of discrimination and racism, and passed it on to the next generation. They showed other Catholics that it’s a Church for all people. This month at McNamara’s Blog, then, lay women and men, bishops, priests, and religious from the Black community are all featured here. Their stories, better than any statistic, bring alive the true meaning of the word Catholic: “universal.” *** end quote *** I found this interesting. I’ve never seen that many “Black Catholics” either. But today, given the state of the “Catholic Church”, it’s hard to to tell the CINOs from the real ones. It’s created a virtual environment of a radiotherapy treatment room, also known as VERT, to help students experience radiation therapy procedures without having to leave the classroom. Sara Silverstein, the clinical coordinator for the radiation therapy technology program at the school, believes it’s already given her students a significant hands-on glimpse into the world of cancer treatment, providing training that could easily be compared to an actual internship. Silverstein’s classroom uses a three-dimensional program that gives students a closer look into the technicalities of radiation therapy. Such therapy is important when it comes to cancer treatment, using a linear accelerator machine to kill cancer cells. Well, I am the incoming Senior Warden (duh!) but I want to tell you a little about myself. I was born and reared in New Your City just after the end of WWII. My family and I lived in Washington Heights (way before Lin Manuel Miranda). My father was a longshoreman (though he looked like a banker) and my mother was a legal secretary (though she looked to me like a mom). I have a brother six years my junior who lives in Arizona (go figure). I attended Regis High School (Jesuit), Manhattan College (CBA brothers), and Stanford University (sui generis). I received Electrical Engineering degrees from the latter institutions. I joined Bell Laboratories and worked there and at the larger AT&T for 31 years be fore embarking on an encore career teaching and researching at Monmouth University and Stevens Institute of Technology. As many of you know my beloved wife Annemarie passed away in August 2012. My daughter, Kristen, lives, along with her husband Scott (Kormann), with me (bittersweet). My Shrewsbury home now also has 5 bunnies and 1 cat. As you can surmise, I was raised a Roman Catholic – altar boy (when you had to pay dues to be one!), etc., etc. After falling away from the RC church, I became an Episcopalian in the mid - 1970s partly to provide my daughter with religious education of a thoughtful, yet traditional, so that she could reject it later on (and read James Joyce and have a chance to understand it). I joined Christ Church Shrewsbury in 1979 and have been a member since. I served in the choir for 35 years. I became more active in parish affairs beginning with the search committees to find our new, and current Rector. Subsequently, I chaired the committee that selected our new (and current) organist / choirmaster, was senior and junior warden, vestry member, parish historian, Graveyard Commission Chair, grant writer, and project manager of numerous grant projects. I very much look forward to serving the parish for this term as senior warden and would like to hear from you about your view of the parish and what it does well and what it can improve upon. JOBIT: Hirsch, John James [MC1973 RIP] 2019-Feb-032019-Feb-06https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/hartfordcourant/ obituary.aspx?n=john-james-hirsch&pid=191454563&fhid=4764 John James Hirsch 1951 - 2019 Obituary John James Hirsch, 68, of Colchester, passed away in Hartford on Sunday, February 3, 2019 following a short battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born January 26, 1951 in Nyack, New York, he was the son of the late John and Charlotte (née Bernhardt) Hirsch. From a young age, he showed a proficiency in both music and engineering. He skillfully played violin for many years, before learning to play the tuba so that he could join his high school marching band. Under the loving guidance of his father, a machinist and WWII veteran, he learned how to fix just about anything, and created his own inventions, including a go-kart made with a lawnmower engine. After graduating from Clarkstown High School in New City, NY in 1969, he attended Manhattan College in New York City, majoring in civil engineering. While at school he worked as an electrician to support himself, and joined a music fraternity. After graduating from college in 1973, he went on to a long and distinguished career as a nuclear engineer, working for Electric Boat, Northeast Utilities and Pratt & Whitney over his 46 years in the field. He loved his job, and was known for evading questions about specific details, because most of his work was classified. His love of music remained a constant throughout his life. He performed in musical theater in New London County and won the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" in 1976. The award was presented to him by esteemed actor James Earl Jones. He sang in the Colchester Federated Church choir for almost 40 years, performed with the Colchester Community Orchestra, and most recently found joy singing with the Electric Boat a capella group, the SubTones, performing for senators, governors and military leaders. John was devoted to his community, most notably volunteering as a fireman with the Gardner Lake Volunteer Fire Company for over 25 years. During that time he served as president and sat on the Board of Directors of the firehouse. He was also active in his local Jaycees chapter and spent many happy years volunteering as a coach with Colchester Youth Soccer. Faith was important to John and he was a member of the Colchester Federated Church for 39 years. During that time he served on many committees, and was recently honored with the distinction Deacon Emeritus of his congregation. But most of all, John loved spending time with his family and friends. He was the first to offer help when someone needed it, and never complained about the trouble. He loved holidays (particularly Christmas), traveling with his beloved wife, especially in their motorhome, spending time with his three children, and doting on his granddaughter. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Shelly (née Hamel) Hirsch, his daughter, Lisa Hirsch Lozano and her husband Gualberto of Los Angeles, CA; daughter, Megan Hirsch and her partner Jeffery Strong of East Hampton; son, John Eric Hirsch of Los Angeles, CA; granddaughter Diana Lozano of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Judith Hirsch and her husband, Angel Alicea of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY; parents-in-law, Joseph and Mary Hamel of Niantic; brother-in-law, Joseph Hamel and his wife, Carol of Syracuse, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law, Eric Hamel. The family will receive guests 4-7 PM Thursday (Feb. 7th) at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester. A Celebration of his Life will be observed 10 AM Friday (Feb. 8th) directly at the Colchester Federated Church (60 Main Street in Colchester). Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. Although not 100 %, Cathie is doing better but has a way to go yet. Her lungs are not completely clear and she is on Oxygen, there is improvement. She will be closely monitored and in a few weeks, certain tests will be repeated. Mike thanks you all for your prayers and kind thoughts. We continue to pray for Cathie's complete recovery free of complications. Please keep the volume up for this good woman. Please keep your prayers up as well for the following folks who are so thankful for your kindness and prayers. Lisa Hatfield, Boise, Idaho, who is doing better, her Remission Rate looks more promising. Ken Kelly, we continue to pray that no further surgery is necessary due to his diabetes complications. Sarah, our friend in Pennsylvania, who has begun her Chemo and is doing well with it. My Sister-in-Law, Joann, had her First surgery, Tuesday, to remove the larger tumor in one of her lungs. Although sore, she is doing well. The other smaller tumor in her other lung, will be done on March 5. She continues to be monitored. Porter entered the beverage industry during 2007 while in college with a concept he developed called Spiked Punch, a Capri Sun style pouch with two shots of Vodka, pre-mixed and ready to drink. In 2008, Kenan attended school at Manhattan College while studying Economics and business, after which he decided to take a job in New York City working for a beverage distribution company where he pedaled his bike around from account to account selling beverages of various types. His intention was to learn as much as he could about the beverage industry in anticipation of launching his Spiked Punch Brand. He built up his routes from 80 customers to 500 buying customers in his first year from 34th street down to the financial district. In 2008, while working and commuting daily to NYC, Kenan decided to start his own distribution company, KP Distribution, in his home town of Pine Island, New York. Every weekend Kenan would sell and deliver products that he would purchase in NYC, to various different accounts that he opened up. The company was a success, and by the end of its first year on a part time basis, the company grossed $190,000.00 in revenue, with a 30% gross margin and 20% bottom line profit. The following year, Kenan knew that he needed to focus more efforts on building his own business, so he hired additional sales personnel and driver personnel. Sales grew to $700,000.00 with similar profit margins. In 2013 the company grossed over $3,000,000.00 in sales. During this period Kenan saw great opportunity in the Aloe segment, which was dominated by Korea and marketed toward the Asian demographic. He decided to leverage his knowledge accumulated with Spiked Punch and make his own brand expanding the target market toward the Hispanic demographic. In 2009 with $50,000 in startup capital, Sabila Corp was founded and launched in 250 accounts in the Hudson Valley. Kenan worked his own routes and used a sell and drop method to reduce costs. The company quickly grew and grossed over $1,000,000 in sales by the end of its second fiscal year. By the end of 2012, the company that was once a five route, 250 account based brand from Pine Island, grew to a 5,000 account base brand throughout the Tri-State area and is currently the leader in convenience sales in the North East in its segment according to Nielson Data. In 2012, the beverage industry continued to thrive, and trends were proving true for many of the new areas of development. Opportunity in the Craft Beer segment intrigued Kenan. By Q3 2012, new plans for future growth included a microbrewery, and additional space for Sabila Corp. After many months of reviewing properties in the Hudson Valley, it was apparent Middletown, NY offered the most opportunity based on the city business friendly environment and willingness to realize the needs of a new market.
