Man Given Second Chance at Life After Brain Tumor Vanishes Without Surgery or Explanation
By McKinley Corbley-Nov 12, 2018

Wood, who attends Gravity Church, was flooded with messages of support and prayers from his fellow church goers and local acquaintances.

Then, the day before his surgery, doctors were stunned to find that the suspected tumor had vanished.

“We do tests and we have medical technology and we try to come up with some conclusion. We’re like detectives – [but] sometimes things happen that we can’t explain,” Dr. Richard Yee told KOVR.

I hope no one takes this the wrong way, and I apologize in advance if this is too Catholic for some people, but

I don't think the students from Covington Catholic High School should be expelled.

Hear me out. Yes, if they are expelled, the school will be rid of them and say that their behavior is unacceptable by the standards of the school.

But that's it. They'll go to another school, and be racists there.

When I was coming up (in Catholic schools (K through college), this kind of behavior, which violates decades of Catholic social teaching and embarrasses the institution they attend, would have been dealt with harshly. The students would have had a punishment that forced them to confront their behavior and all that was wrong with it. Make them do a service project, under adult supervision, with people who don't look like them. Have a speaker, from a Native nation, an immigrant community, or the local African-American community, come to tell them how racism has impacted their lives and those of their ancestors. Make it so that they have to think about what they did, why it was wrong, and how they can atone for it and provide an example to kids coming up behind them to never engage in this kind of behavior.

My point is, there are ways to confront this that are superior to the school washing its hands of these kids, that makes them practice a little humility rather than the smug hostility they showed to Mr, Phillips. It's not "give them a chance" so much as "make them confront why what they did is wrong, and cause them to change their behavior permanently." And include their parents, too.

University of New Haven

I was born and raised in Hamden, CT and graduated from Manhattan College in the Bronx, NY with a Bachelor’s in Sociology with a concentration in Human Services. I focused most of my research on the history of LGBTQ communities and their impact on public policy and the military.

Off campus I completed internships for Mother’s Against Drunk Driving CT, getting involved in public speaking, advocating and creating awareness of the dangers of drunk driving.

Throughout my time in undergrad I was a member of the Manhattan College singers, and actively involved in student services, intra-murals, as well as a mentor and tutor for NYC students in preparation for the SATs and the college application process.

After undergrad I earned a job as the Assistant Director of  Enrollment at my Alma Mater, Notre Dame High School in West Haven, CT. During my time at Notre Dame I was responsible for recruiting students domestically and internationally, interviewing prospective students and their families, researching the national independent school climate, chairing the NEASC reaccreditation Homestay Committee, coordinating train and bus travel, and overseeing student groups. I went on to earn a Master’s in Education from Albertus Magnus College.

Currently I am the Assistant Director of International Enrollment. Feel free to reach out should you need any information regarding the school or any of our unique programs.

Building Your BossBabe Support Group
January 14, 2019 by Susan Fiorentino

*** begin quote ***

Post college, finding a supportive group that fit my professional needs was difficult for me to find. I attended a very small college, where all my social and support circles where in one bubble. When I needed help with a paper or advice on applying for internships, my advisor and the Career Development Office was an email or quick walk to campus. I realized that finding support for my big dreams was going to take more than staying in my small bubble because that comfort no longer existed. It has been almost 7 (!!!) years since I graduated from Manhattan College and following these five steps has (over time) helped me get through some difficult personal and professional times.

My hometown friends and college friends were in the same position as me. We were (and still are) trying to find our place in the professional world. We kept in touch for a while but after some time, some friendships just fall apart. This could be simply because of location or interests. Luckily, I have an extremely supportive family who always supported my goals. Friends will slip in and out of your life but family (hopefully) will be in your corner to always support you.

During college, I had an injury that forced me to give up one of my favorite things, cheerleading. Working out was put in the back of my mind after that. After being so tired all the time and feeling unmotivated applying to jobs, I thought working out again could help me. Playing sports my whole life, I knew group fitness was more of a fit for me for long term results versus a regular gym. I stumbled across Kettlebellas and have been hooked ever since. For the past five years, I have been taking classes there sometimes 5 times a week with three of the best trainers and supportive group of women. Being around supportive women is very difficult to find, but this place has saved me so many times from doubting myself, body image issues, and other things that come up day to day. It didn’t take long, I noticed the more I committed myself to getting to the gym, the better I felt and looked. When I am mentally fit, I perform better at work, strive better personally, and am more motivated to handle my busy schedule. It may take time, but finding a supportive fitness group (in person or an online community) will have a huge benefit to helping you complete your goals.

While studying at Manhattan College, I knew I wanted to be a part of the non-profit world. I grew up and live in Staten Island, which is a very tight knit community. It is a small community with an even smaller and overlapping network in the non-profit field. In fundraising, there is a strong emphasis on relationship building so that is something that even today, still sticks with me. Even though I have had a few jobs since graduating, I still keep in touch with volunteers and/or former co-workers. Relationships are ever evolving and we have been able to help each other reach our goals even after we parted ways at other jobs. Changing jobs in a small community, but in the same field, taught me some valuable lessons such as not building bridges and keeping positive even in difficult work conditions.

Charles C. McCarthy

On January 21, 2019, Charles Christopher McCarthy, age 68, of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.

He was the beloved husband of Barbara McCarthy (nee Boudreau) for 46 years; devoted father of Christopher McCarthy and his wife Caitlin Bell, Catherine McCarthy Lehr and her husband Donald, Daniel McCarthy and his wife Katherine Berry, and Peter McCarthy and his wife Megan; adoring Pop Pop of Jonathan, Susannah, Charles, Philip, Ari, Oliver, and an eagerly awaited grandchild expected in August. He is also survived by many other loving family members.

Charlie was born in Manhattan, New York, the only child of the late Charles and Susan (Hendrick) McCarthy. He grew up in Queens and was educated at Saint Camillus Elementary School and Nazareth High School. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College. After their wedding, Charlie and Barbara relocated to Maryland, where Charlie earned his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University and enjoyed a 46-year career as an Engineer and Program Manager with Westinghouse (later Northrop Grumman).

Family and faith formed the center of Charlie's life. He loved playing chess, debating the finer points of grammar, and entertaining his grandchildren. He was the family handyman, the quintessential teller of funny stories, and a devoted Jeopardy! fan (answering nearly every question correctly). Charlie especially loved spending time with Barbara -whether going for walks, doing the daily crossword puzzle, dining out, or traveling to far-flung parts of the world, they always found joy and contentment in each other's company.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 10 a.m., at Saint Pius X Church (6428 York Road, Baltimore, MD, 21212) with interment to follow. Friends and family are invited to stay for a reception at Saint Pius thereafter. In 2017, Martello became group lead for HDR’s New York-New Jersey bridge structure section. He manages 45 engineers on a team he has helped stock with experts in BIM, and geotechnical and wind analysis.

Beyond the firm, Martello shares his knowledge as a graduate structural engineering professor at Manhattan College, his alma mater, and as a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Top Level Warning On Massive US Fiscal Deficit

*** begin quote ***

Even Keynesian technocrats are getting concerned about the massive U.S. fiscal deficit.

In a wide-ranging interview (video below), Gian Maria Milesi-Ferretti, deputy director of research at the International Monetary Fund, warns that EU economies are slowing and that exploding U.S. fiscal deficit is becoming a concern.

The concern about the U.S. deficit is genuine.

As readers probably know, I’m a little L libertarian.  So I don’t like “Gooferment” debt or taxes.  But when you cut taxes, you must cut spending.  Seems so obvious to me.  Now the "tax and spend
D’s — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez aka AOC is the latest in long line of fiscal illiterates with big spending ideas — are essentially the same as the "borrow and spend” R’s.  Both are a plague upon the nation. The current $526 billion deficit in 2019, 22T+ national debt, and the guesstimated 200T+ in unfunded liabilities that our posterity will have to deal with is a national disaster!
