The Manhattan Jaspers have inducted several of their baseball team’s players over the years into their athletic department’s hall of fame. One of those enshrined players is Joseph J. Coppo Jr., who was inducted into the Jaspers’ hall of fame in 2004. Coppo, a full-blooded Italian-American, had captained the Jaspers during his senior season in 1975, and according to the Jaspers’ web site, led Manhattan in earned runs average, innings pitched, and slugging percentage. Coppo, whom the Cincinnati Reds had reportedly drafted straight out of high school, had opted to attend Manhattan rather than immediately pursuing a professional baseball career. Despite being a standout in the high school and college levels, Coppo never reached the major leagues. Speaking of Little League, after graduating from Manhattan, Coppo soon got married, had four children, reportedly shared his love of baseball with them, and sure enough, Joseph became a coach in his local Little League, where he shared his passion for the game with other parents’ kids. Coppo was reportedly very well liked and respected by other Little League parents, and by his players. Late in the year 2000, Coppo became an executive for the financial firm Cantor Fitzgerald, and shortly thereafter, he moved into its corporate headquarters and New York City office on the 104th floor of 1 World Trade Center, one of the Twin Towers in Lower Manhattan. On Sept. 11, 2001, at 8:46 am, the baseball dad and coach was murdered along with 657 of his fellow New York employees, 68% of Cantor Fitgerald’s overall workforce, when unspeakable ruthless hijackers intentionally crashed a passenger jet into that tower, only a handful of floors below Coppo’s office. O'Gorman 1957 - 2018 Yonkers - David Christopher O'Gorman. David because it was his mother's maiden name, Christopher because he was born near Christmas, and O'Gorman is the family name. He died on August 5, 2018, much too young. Born in the Bronx, New York to Joan and Eugene O'Gorman, he lived almost his entire life as a Yonkers resident. A graduate of Saunders Trades and Technical High School and Manhattan College, he worked a variety of jobs as a teenager before settling for a 20 year career in the chemical industry. David was named "Salesman of the Year" on more than one occasion and even became a plant manager for a chemical company on Alexander Street. When it closed, he decided to return to school and obtained teaching credentials from Mercy College. David has spent the past 17 years as a Yonkers Public Schools teacher of business and marketing. He has enjoyed his career, helping out whenever needed, and directed the Chess club and History Bowl club at Yonkers Middle High School. A man of many talents and simple tastes, he has enjoyed camping, going to baseball games and concerts, and in recent years golfing. He read 100 books in the first grade and developed a love for reading, so it was fitting that he would become editor of "Chin Music" which was published in a local paper. He enjoyed the mystical and devoted time to organize and manage a MUFON group for several years. David was loyal to family, friends and even sports. He was devoted to his mother, Joan and sisters, Tracey and Janine, their families and many relatives as well. David loved his wife Eileen and adored his children, Christine (Postelle) and Nicholas. Jaxson (Postelle), his grandchild, was the light of his life. Jaxsie held a special place in "Papa's" heart. Friends came easily to David because he had an outgoing personality and loved people. He remained a loyal friend not only to everyone who knew him from his childhood to adulthood, but to his children's friends as well. To know him was to love him as was witnessed by all who came long distances to visit him while he was in the hospital. Sports were a very important part of his life. Again loyal, a forever Mets fan, his daughter's first words were "Go Mets". He shared his love of sports by coaching and refereeing his son, Nick's, younger years. He supported Nick's early career as a wrestler and influenced Nick to become a physical education teacher. David will be missed more than words can express. The families wish to thank those who cared for him during his last days at Calvary Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations to Calvary Hospital are appreciated. He graduated with a degree in engineering from Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY, and continued his education with Masters Degrees in Engineering and Business from Rutgers University in NJ. Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy; brother George (Pauline) and sister Angela Fjellman (Tom). He was the proud uncle to many nieces and nephews and now great nieces and nephews. He loved his family near and extended and was always ready to help in any way he could. Bill spent his business career with the Exxon Corporation in Chemical Engineering. He had the opportunity to live in Brussels, Belgium, and Nassau the Bahamas, along with assignments in Houston, TX and various locations in NJ. In retirement he moved to Ponte Vedra Beach and planned his assault on the game of golf. He was always sure that each new swing tip or new club was going to finally produce what he dreamed of. Even if he did not reach his ideal score, he made friendships that lasted his lifetime. He was the proud participant in many golf groups, including Friday golf, the Muchachos, and the Travelers. He was surrounded by family all week at a place he loved dearly the Outer Banks of North Carolina before passing from complications related to metastatic prostate cancer. Ed was a truly special soul with a heart full of kindness and generosity. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him. Ed was born in the Bronx, New York to John and Sarah Kelly, both immigrants from Ireland. A graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School and Manhattan College, he began his career as a field engineer with the FAA in New York before relocating to Washington, DC, ascending to leadership positions within the Senior Executive Service and retiring in 1994 after 38 years as a civil servant. He was an active member of the Vienna, Virginia community for much of his adult life, in particular, as a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, where he was an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, ministered to the homebound, taught computer classes to ESL students, volunteered with the social activities committee, participated in the Teams of Our Lady movement, fundraised for the building of the current church, and served on the parish pastoral council for several years. He also coached many of his sons youth basketball and baseball teams. He loved to travel spending summer vacations in the Outer Banks with family for 45 years, wintering in Naples, Florida for the past 14 years, visiting his parent s homeland of Ireland on multiple occasions, and taking cruises with his wife and friends as often as possible. Ed s family was his greatest love in life followed closely by the New York Giants and New York Yankees. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Catherine Elder Kelly; six children and their spouses: Michael Kelly (Valerie) of Havre de Grace, MD, Irene Kelly Starrs (Joseph) of South Riding, VA, James Kelly (Jessica) of Warrenton, VA, Thomas Kelly (Evangeline) of Alexandria, VA, Stephen Kelly (Nancy) of Boulder, CO, and Christopher Kelly (Maria) of McLean, VA; nineteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
