British Teen Posts Uplifting Notes on Bridge and ‘Helps Save Six Lives’
By Good News Network - Jul 22, 2018

*** begin quote ***

An 18-year-old girl’s ingenious idea to attach messages onto a bridge in Sunderland is inspiring those in despair to think twice before jumping.

Paige Hunter wrote more than 40 heartfelt notes and tied them to the railings of the Wearmouth Bridge hoping to provide comfort at a time when it is needed most.

The encouraging words penned by the East Durham College student included: ‘Even though things are difficult, your life matters; you’re a shining light in a dark world, so just hold on’.

*** end quote ***

You have to admire that people can think of ways to prevent suicides without spending huge amounts of money.  Simple yet effective and efficient.  Love it.

Perhaps it should be on EVERY bridge.

Lizette Richardson, superintendent of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, announced her retirement late last month. Her last day will be Aug. 31.

After serving at the park since October 2015, Richardson had been tapped to head the National Park Service’s regional office in Denver as part of a major management shake-up proposed in April, which would have been a promotion.

“I had the tough decision to choose from two exciting opportunities and after weighing all factors I decided to retire,” she said in a statement.

Ernest Scinto, 88, owner of the Back Fence
August 2, 2018 | Filed under: News,Community,Obituaries | Posted by: The Villager
BY GABE HERMAN |

Ernest Scinto, who owned and ran the beloved Bleecker St. live-music venue the Back Fence with his brother Rocco from 1958 until its 2013 closing, died July 29. He was 88.

Scinto’s health had been worsening the past three years from the effects of Parkinson’s disease, though his mind stayed sharp to the end, said his daughter Marilyn.

Ernest Scinto grew up in Little Italy on Mulberry St. He was born on Oct. 28, 1929, “the day before the stock market crash, he always liked to point out,” his daughter Lori recalled.

He attended Transfiguration School, on Mott St., for primary school, going on to Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx.

After getting an undergraduate business degree —“He was a proud Manhattan College graduate, he loved that school,” said Lori — he went to graduate school at New York University, working toward an M.B.A. But when his father died, he dropped out to take over the Back Fence with Rocco.

The Back Fence, at Bleecker and Thompson Sts., was opened in 1945 by Ernest’s father, Ernest J. Scinto, and uncle Silvio. Before that, they had run the Pioneer Nut Club on the Lower East Side, which featured female impersonators.

It was originally called the Back Fence Bar, but when the folk music scene hit the Village, the focus shifted to live music and it just became the Back Fence. Throughout the years, performances were mostly cover songs and mostly acoustic.

There was some initial apprehension when James Synowiez began to consider the idea of coaching a second varsity team.

It only took one conversation before a resume was submitted.

Synowiez has been the boys lacrosse coach at Scarsdale for the past two seasons, and will be taking over as the ice hockey coach. The school board is expected to approve his appointment in the coming weeks.

“I’ve spoken to the captains, Ben Schwartz and Jack Brosgol, and I’ll reach out to the rest of the boys after we get back to school,” said Synowiez, a former Manhattan College lacrosse attackman who played Junior B hockey growing up in Binghamton. “I got to see what Jim Mancuso and Kevin Wright did for the program and we really want to keep a strong tradition alive.”

ROI. When it comes to paying for college, those three little letters make all the difference. Attending Manhattan College is one of the best educational investments you can make. Our alumni are not only making money, but making the world a better place. Manhattan was once referred to as "The Best Kept Secret in New York City." Today, the secret's out — Manhattan College is nationally recognized as a top school in preparing its graduates for successful careers at international companies like IBM, Google, JP Morgan and Wells Fargo. In fact, less than a year after graduating, on average 90% of alumni report that they are employed or in graduate school. On top of that, Manhattan College is exceeding expected results in areas like starting salaries and mid-career earnings, warranting a "value-added" label from institutions like Forbes, Brookings and Payscale. Can I break a window to save a dog in a hot car? Here's the law in N.J.
Posted August 02, 2018 at 07:45 AM | Updated August 02, 2018 at 11:37 AM
By Sophie Nieto-Munoz | NJ.com for NJ Advance Media

*** begin quote ***

So, can I break the window?

There is no "hot car" law in New Jersey. Even though it's illegal to leave an animal in a car in the Garden State, no one has the authority to break into a vehicle to save the pet — not even law enforcement.

So it's especially important not to hesitate when contacting authorities, Wood said.

"Police can still seize the animal and arrest the owner, because it's illegal."

However, “good Samaritan” laws exist in California, Colorado, Indiana, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio and Tennessee, allowing you to break a car window to save a pet. In 19 other states, including New York, Delaware and Virginia, only public officials such as law enforcement and humane officers can legally break into a car to rescue the animal.

*** end quote ***

If I am my own sovereign, then I choose what laws I obey.

“I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.” ― Robert A. Heinlein

In this case, I’d break the window and suffer any penalties inflicted upon me.

What would you do?
