When asked why it matters, and is there not an argument for seeing extinction as part of evolution, Hildebrandt becomes irate.
“It is very arrogant to ask why this is important,” he said. “We humans kill a species in its very fragile habitat, and then ask: ‘why is it important to rescue it?’ This animal is at the end of a complex biological system. Its faeces provides food for thousands of insects, its skin living space for ox picker birds, the branches it breaks down through walking through the jungle provides food for antelopes and produces pathways to escape from leopards. It is like a landscape architect on which many species are dependent.
“We learnt a bit about disturbed ecosystems through the ebola and AIDS crises. We don’t know what the long-term effect on the ecosystem might be, but we definitely disturb it by removing such an animal.”
Given its potential for success and the way it has captured the public imagination after Sudan’s death, it is a surprise to discover that the rhino preservation project is something most of the scientists involved are mainly doing in their spare time.
“Everything would have been a little faster had we had solid financing,” Hildebrandt said. “We’re not running out of money, the truth is we never had any money for this.”
The institute is trying to use the momentum created by Sudan’s death to galvanise support. “A 10-year-old girl donated the €100 from her piggy bank towards our work this week. So kids really recognise the importance of this, even if politicians don’t,” Hildebrandt said.

Politicians and bureaucrats couldn’t recognize something more important that their own future. I have to admire the foresight of some folks to preserve the future options.
Growing up on SciFi and later computer games, I learned from Wally Crothier’s Adventure game that if you killed the bird at step 4, you never could get by the snake in step 7. SO to, we don’t know what, if anything, we will discover useful in the White Rhino in the future. Maybe it’s the cure for cancer or athlete’s foot. Who knows? And, really who cares? Only some “crazy human” somewhere preserving his collection of “Crowley’s dung bettles”.
As always, “first do no harm” should be like Star Trek’s Prime Directive (i.e., MYOB).
Glad to see that there are some very smart people “saving the world” one semen sample at a time.

That fact that Manhattan College was actually located in the Bronx should have made me suspicious of the whole experience, During the summers I worked at the Breezy Point Surf Club as a cabana boy and a bartender. This was a great job. I literally made enough money from tips to pay my entire college tuition without taking any loans. When I bragged about this years later at a family party, my mother, who had been a little “over served,” chimed in that not only had I paid my tuition but also half of my brother Pat’s. What??? This was news to me. Pray tell Mom, tell me more. My mother laughed.

Bob was born April 10, 1926 in the Ridgewood section of Brooklyn, N.Y. to Ida Josephine Schubert and William Sylvester Rauth. He died quietly at his home on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 in the arms of his loving wife Adele.
Bob graduated from Brooklyn Tech in 1944 and earned his Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College in 1951; retired from RCA in 1985 and moved to Virginia. He served with the United States Navy during World War II on Adak in the Aleutian Islands.
The event of Vatican Council 11 (1962-65) was a catalyst for Bob and fueled his peace and justice activism for the rest of his life. He was inspired, in 1990 to go to the impoverished country of Haiti, which he always said was a life changing experience. He learned Haitian Kreyol, is today beloved by the people, and because of speaking out, often prophetically, earned the nickname "Advocacy Bob."
He has been involved in many peace actions throughout the United States and was especially proud of being arrested in 1995 at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site for nonviolent conscientious objection to war and nuclear weapons. By this time, the team of Bob and Adele were known for such adventures. Activism, sparked by love, was the hallmark of their marriage.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife Sally; his son, Ken; and his brother, Ed. Bob is survived by his wife Adele; his daughter, Karyn Teeter; his sister, Trudy Taylor; daughter-in-law, Diana Rauth; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous cousins.
Bob's passion to put those who suffer globally at the top of his priorities was never at the expense of devotion to his family. His practice was to call each family member every single week. He simply embraced the world with his vision for peace. He had a great sense of humor and was deeply loved by many. There will never be another like Bob. Bob was a faithful member of Resurrection Church where he will be remembered for founding the parish Haiti Mission.
A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Resurrection Catholic Church, Moneta, Visitation will be at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass presided by Msgr. Joe Lehman at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers checks may be written to Resurrection for the mission supported by Bob in Haiti, SAKALA (www.sakala-haiti.org). I had the good fortune to be an undergraduate student under Bruce's tutelage at Manhattan College from 1960 to 1963. I took most of my major coursework in his classes, worked for him in various academic undertakings (Testing Center Aide, Teaching Assistant, Research projects, etc.) and became a friend of his entire and extended family (including - together with my then yet-to-be wife - babysitting his children!). After graduation and further training in psychology, I worked for and with Bruce in several clinical and academic settings while becoming his neighbor in Bethel, CT where we would have Sunday-morning coffee just about every week for 16 years.
Other than my wife, no single individual has had as much influence on the person I see myself today - a successful psychologist (now retired), a person with an inquiring mind, cosmopolitan tastes and one with a solid sense of humor and a healthy disrespect for convention and authority. A piece of my bedrock has passed. RIP good friend

The other day, I began completing an online employment application for a legal job to help children at risk of abuse. The prospective employer had already received my traditional resume and cover letter. By email, its personnel director advised me that I must complete the employer’s online application and sent me a link to the form.
Providing current contact information for a vanished employer is challenging. My former superiors have largely died, retired, or disappeared. Several government agencies and two law firms for which I’d worked during the last 40 years have ceased to exist.
The form insisted that Manhattan College and Fordham University School of Law, the schools I’d attended, were non-existent. This would be news to thousands of alumni and alumnae. I emailed the personnel director, who patiently explained how to deal with that.

Francis (Frank) John Santangelo, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday March 21, 2018 in Manhattan Beach, CA. Born in Jackson Heights, New York, Frank graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Following his Korean War service, Frank was married on April 16, 1955 to Clorinda. Soon after, Frank was employed by Turner Construction Company. Turner relocated Frank frequently, which resulted in the Santangelos raising their daughter on both coasts and in the Chicago area.
Retiring after 35 years with Turner, Frank became a very active member of American Martyrs Church, including helping with building the gymnasium. Frank is survived by wife Clorinda, daughter Donna Mae Ellis, son-in-law Tom, grandsons Matt and Kevin, nieces, nephews and other family. He was preceded in death by parents John and Dominica Santangelo and his two older sisters.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2:00-6:00 pm on Sunday April 8, 2018 at Rice Mortuary, Torrance, CA. The Service will be held at 10:00 am at American Martyrs Catholic Church on Monday April 9, 2018. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, CA.

The invaluable contributions of Isabel Charles, the first woman to serve as a dean at the University of Notre Dame, and those of the Holy Cross Brothers and the Holy Cross Sisters — women and men religious who have played critical roles in Notre Dame’s founding and growth — will be recognized by additions to the University’s Wall of Honor. A ceremony to celebrate these additions will take place at 11 a.m. April 13 (Friday) at the wall on the ground floor of the Main Building. A reception will follow in the Main Building rotunda.

Charles earned her bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College and master’s and doctoral degrees in English from Notre Dame. She served on the faculty and as executive vice president and academic dean at Ohio Dominican College before returning to Notre Dame in 1973 as assistant dean in the College of Arts and Letters. She became the first woman to serve as a dean at Notre Dame in 1976, serving until 1982. She was assistant provost and director of international studies from 1982 until her retirement in 1995, growing the University’s study abroad programs by 167 percent.

Brooklyn-raised Dr. Vince Maligno never stepped foot on Staten Island until 1981, but it was through sports, he believes, that he was instantly welcomed.
But the 72-year-old Dr. Maligno hardly ever played any sports. Rather he constantly officiated games in a variety of sports and leagues, and this year he will be celebrating 50 years of officiating.
"Sports got me acclimated into the community," said Dr. Maligno. "Without even playing sports I was involved. Especially in Staten Island, the high school leagues, softball leagues, the Little Leagues. I worked every Little League and kept myself involved not only because I enjoyed it, but it was also a source of income."

Dr. Maligno continued to umpire both baseball and softball in 1968 and 1969, but after graduating from Manhattan College, he became a second lieutenant in the Air Force. But his officiating career was basically just beginning as well.

Frank E. Zappetti, 74, of Cranbury, New Jersey, passed away on March 20, 2018. Frank was born in the Bronx, New York on December 13, 1943 and graduated from Manhattan College in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He was married to his wife Carol (nee Orlando) for 52 years.
Frank worked as a certified public accountant at KPMG from 1965 to 1975, when he joined Revlon, Inc. and served as its controller for 15 years. He later returned to KPMG to work in its internal accounting department until he retired.
Frank is survived by his children, Craig (Lisa) of Haddonfield, New Jersey, and Scott (Karen) of Lebanon, New Jersey, his seven grandchildren, Jenna, Thomas, Michael, Katherine, Grace, Sophie and Matthew, his brother Thomas Zappetti and his sister-in-law Francene Lienau. Frank lived with his wife in Port Washington, New York for 35 years and was a resident of Cranbury, New Jersey when he passed away. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed spending his summers on the beach in Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
In his retirement, Frank enjoyed following the stock market and personal financial planning matters, as well as the political issues of the day, which he always enjoyed debating with anyone who would listen. His true passion, however, was his grandchildren, who knew him as Poppy. He treasured every opportunity he had to spend time with them and to watch them participate in all of their sporting events and other activities. He was the biggest cheerleader for each grandchild and had a special bond with each one of them. They always viewed him as the life of the party and he always made them laugh. He leaves them with memories to last a lifetime.
A memorial mass was held at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Port Washington, New York on March 24, 2018 and he was interred at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, New York.

Maynard E. Baker, 90, of Amsterdam, N.Y., passed away Friday morning, April 6, 2018, at St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in St Johnsville, N.Y.
Born in Amsterdam, N.Y., on July 2, 1927, he was the son of the late Maynard R. and Genevieve McGuigan Baker.
Maynard was a graduate of St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam and Manhattan College in the Bronx, N.Y.,
Maynard was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam.
He was also a charter and lifetime member of the Irish American Club.
Maynard is survived by his wife of 71 years, Eileen “Pat” Baker at home; three sons, Daniel Baker (Azalea) of Amsterdam, Jeffry Baker (Agnes) of Boston, Mass., and Thomas Baker (Mary) of Perth, N.Y.; one daughter, Jill P. Ioele (Armand Lauria) of Gloversville, N.Y.; thirteen grandchildren, Beth Anne (Jeremy) Joel, Amy (Christopher) Hale, Daniel (Danielle) Baker, Kelen, Catherine and Shawn Baker, Cherie Smullen, Brie (Steve) Pirog, Emily and Drew Baker, Ashley Lauria, Adam and Christopher Ioele; and six great-grandchildren, Sadie, Max, Gabrielle, Aidan, Santino and Laurel. Many nieces and nephews also survive
He was also predeceased by his grandson, Richard Smullen on Feb. 4, 2018.
Maynard graciously donated his body to the Albany Anatomical Center for Research.
The family would like to especially thank St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, for giving Bake a home away from home. Your loving care and support will be forever grateful.

Wilmington, Del. - Joseph T. Mazzeo died peacefully on April 5, 2018 at the age of 86 in Wilmington, DE with his family close by his side.
Joe was born in Jersey City, NJ, grew up in Hoboken, and spent his youth taking in the sights and sounds of New York City. He graduated with a BS in chemistry from Manhattan College where he also made a significant contribution playing for the Jaspers basketball team. Joe had a true affinity for the game; he attended many Final Fours, and loved to tell his grandchildren about the rec league he shared with a player named Wilt Chamberlin.
After graduation, Joe accepted his first job with the DuPont Company in Carney's Point, and eventually managed several plants in New Jersey, Delaware, and Virginia. Throughout his successful 39-year career, he had the support of his loving wife Ann and his six children. Joe's leadership skills and personable management style led him to meet and connect with so many people. As a couple, Joe and Ann forged meaningful and lasting friendships with coworkers and neighbors alike. Above all, Joe was happiest spending time with the family he loved, whether celebrating holidays while gathered around the dining room table or enjoying his favorite vacation spot, the Jersey shore.
Joe's other passion in life was sports, particularly golf. In retirement, the energy he had spent in the office was spent on the course. Always striving to better his game, Joe was thrilled to achieve membership in that elusive "Hole In One Club." Even at age 85, he was frequently found playing with "The Sweepers" at The DuPont Country Club. He never turned down an opportunity for cards and conversation.
A devout Catholic, Joe shared his time and talents supporting Catholic education through CCD, Eucharistic Ministry and volunteer work at St. Francis hospital.
Joe was the loving father of children Joanne (Daniel) Conaty, Donna (Andy) Poth, Nancy (Richard) Robbins, Michael (Robin) Mazzeo, Tricia Mazzeo, and Stephanie (Kevin) Kit.
"Pop Joe" adored his grandchildren, Meghan Conaty, Christopher Robbins, Erin (Marshall) Jenney, Lauren (Tim) Schuster, Kate Robbins, Ashley Mazzeo, Nathan Kit and Nolan Kit. He was thrilled to see the family grow with the arrival of great granddaughter Sloane King Jenney. They will all miss him dearly, but will cherish the memories he created with each one of them.
Joe also is survived by his sister Patricia Mazzeo of Fairfield, NJ.
The family would like to thank Sunrise Senior Living and Vitas for their loving and caring support.

State-Enforced Paganism in America

But Christians who believe the Ten Commandments are an expression of God’s higher laws are irrational and must be expunged from any meaningful role in society.
Persecution of Christians is nothing new, of course; though it has been relatively restrained in America until recent decades.
Instances of persecution abound, both past and present. During the reign of Louis XIV of France, the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which had offered some protection of the Huguenot minority, meant Protestants were deprived of any rights whatever. The Sun King’s enforcer, Cardinal de Richelieu, succeeded in breaking any political power held by Huguenots by banning them from holding public office and by decreeing their children be taken from their homes to be instructed in the tenets of the Catholic faith, which was to be absolute.
In similar manner, America’s Christian parents, protestant and Catholic alike -- most of whom do not have affordable and easily accessible alternatives -- find their children forcibly instructed in the tenets of New Paganism in public schools. The doctrines of the New Paganism, including polytheistic multiculturalism, moral relativism, and political correctness exclude teaching of Christian principles.

The New Paganism, which in its most current form of transgenderism is both anti-Christian and anti-science -- and thus anti-Western -- is deeply committed to the use of state power to quell opposition, Christian or otherwise, as has recently been shown in the case of a feminist British woman who was interrogated by police because her tweets questioning the castration of a sixteen-year-old boy were deemed prejudicial to transgenderism. All dissenters, not just Christians, should be appalled by such raw use of state power to suppress opposing views.
The New Paganism is bound to think America would be better if it were rid of Christians. Riddled with pre-science superstitions better belonging to pagan barbarism, the New Paganism is dead set against any restraints whatsoever. Christians, however, know human will is capable of great evil, particularly when it brooks no restraint. They know human will must be restrained by allegiance to a higher law than the state. They know the New Paganism is horribly regressive and inevitably oppressive, as are all ideologies that permit the absolute ascendency of human will, be it the will of an elite class or individuals. The ineluctable descent of the sexual revolution into bestiality, pedophilia and the mutilation of the human body in order to create a facsimile of the opposite sex are revelatory of a truly barbarous religion.

The hierarchy of the various churches have lost all moral authority due to human flaws and the desire to please the “king” lest they be prosecuted for those human flaws.
If “we” don’t stop Gooferment “education” — which the Communists were excoriated for “brainwashing children”, then how can we stop the Left’s relentless march towards socialism. Then comes dictatorship and eventually genocide for the Christians. Nothing can dislodge the Gooferment’s desire to be the people’s “god”. And, there can only be one “god”. Argh!
“We, The Sheeple” must push back and insist that parents educate their own children without interference from “the State”. For those who insist that children “will not be properly educated”, all that has to be done is to point to the results “achieved” by Gooferment Skrules!
