When Teens Are Asked to do Something Kind, They Write 5,100 Notes to Uplift Every Student in School
By Good News Network-Feb 24, 2018

*** begin quote ***

When the students at Carmel Clay High School were asked to do something kind for their fellow classmates, they did not just rise to the occasion; they owned it.

Sarah Wolff, who teaches a ceramics class at the school in Carmel, Indiana, asked a group of her pupils to do something nice for their fellow students. She figured that – following the tragic events at the school in Parkland, Florida last week – her students could benefit from even a trickle of positive vibes.

The teens then agreed to write and print out inspiring notes for their peers—not just the ones they were friends with, but a note for every student in the school.

As a result, the youngsters wrote 5,100 individual notes of inspiration and taped them to the school lockers on Wednesday.

*** end quote ***

I’m no goody two shoes but I’d like to hope this is more effective than any “gun prohibition”.

Clearly, the Parkland Florida was a disturbed individual, but perhaps, just if just one person had taped such a note to his locker, things might have been different.

Maybe if we all listen and reach out a little more, we can be that change?

It just seems a bit hard to wrap one's head around a Jasper born in 1961 who graduated alma mater in 1953...

Perhaps Mike has an explanation for this Back to the Future phenomenon...

Thomas Lester
Obituary

Thomas Joseph Francis Lester (77), Lincoln, CA, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by those who loved and cared for him. Tom (Butch to his family) was born in Butte, Montana and attended Central High School in Butte. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from Iona College and received a Master's Degree in Mathematics from Manhattan College in New York.

While enrolled in a PhD program at UC Davis, he began teaching mathematics in the Del Paso Heights area of Sacramento. This experience fueled a long career in education, including positions at CSUS, the California Department of Education, and WestEd. He created a statewide program, Math Matters, to provide high quality professional educational development that supported the teaching of mathematics with the goal of making it entertaining and more accessible to all students. Through Math Matters, he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and strategies with teachers, and his eyes twinkled in a magical way as he saw teachers' jaws drop when their students engaged in and grew excited about mathematics.

He was named an Emeritus Member of Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics, and in 2003, he was honored with the prestigious California Council of Mathematics' Edward Begle Memorial Award.

In addition to his career as an educator, Tom was one of the founders of Plexers, the entertaining word puzzles that could be found in the Sacramento Bee and Montana Standard. He could often be found jotting down ideas or quick notes for future puzzles and loved sharing them with all.

Tom loved spending time being active and outdoors, carrying this love even into his final days. Though he loved playing, coaching and watching all sports, golf was by far his favorite, especially after his retirement. He could be found almost daily on his own backyard putting green, often joined by his grandchildren, or on his favorite local courses. He loved attending the annual celebrity golf tournament held in South Lake Tahoe with friends and family.

He especially enjoyed planning vacations and celebrations that brought his family and friends together. He also loved traveling to places like Australia, Ireland and Hawaii. Tom spent his life surrounded by a loving family and caring friends.

He is survived by his life partner and friend, Susan Iida; his two children, Christopher (Mandi) Lester and Cara (Michael) Kopecky; his grandchildren, Henry, Alexander, Ruby, and Sophia; his siblings, JoAnn Anderson, Sister Lynn Lester, James (Wilene) Lester, Kim (David) Scott; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Margaret Lester (Torpy); and brother-in-law, Ralph Anderson. A celebration of Tom's life will be held on March 4, 2018 at the Sun City Lincoln Hills Clubhouse at 2:00pm.

Knowing Amanda…

Wait, but first, who is she?!

Senior Marketing Manager at Updater!

Basically, the lady behind the management, coordination and implementation of all marketing efforts and programs for the company, (ultimately driving strategic business value through marketing.)

Amanda - Then and now…

Amanda graduated from Manhattan College back in 2010 (where she played on the women’s soccer team!) with a double major in marketing and global business. Since then, she’s weaved her way through various industries, starting in sports, then moving to fashion, and ultimately, landing in what she claims to be her favorite (and therefore the most glamorous – relocation!). Why relocation you ask? Well, “it’s something nearly everyone can relate to – who hasn’t moved?” she responds. (That, and the fact that Updater happens to be a relocation technology company!)

JNEWS: Power, Mary [MC????] seeks Hingham selectman reelection

CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCEMENT: Hingham selectman Mary Power to run for reelection
Posted Mar 2, 2018 at 3:24 PM

Editor’s note: Campaign announcements are provided by the candidates and/or their committees.

Mary Power, Chair of the Hingham Board of Selectmen, announces that she will run for reelection in the April 2018 Town election.

“Serving as a member of your Board of Selectmen has been a great honor. Over the past three years, I have been guided by the principles of respectful leadership, responsible stewardship, and upholding Hingham’s tradition of civil discourse.

“I’m proud of our accomplishments. We’ve maintained our Aaa bond rating, and have delivered balanced budgets. With the issuance of a building permit for Broadstone Bare Cove, we will have achieved our 40B affordable housing minimum requirement until 2030, giving us greater control as we continue to grow our affordable housing inventory. We initiated an accelerated road-building plan and preserved over 50 acres of open space in Glad Tidings Plain.

“Looking ahead, we have several large capital projects on the horizon, and must determine how to prioritize and pay for them without overburdening our citizens. We need to pursue economic development opportunities in order to keep residential tax rates low, while preserving Hingham’s character and our quality of life. We must manage leadership transitions with the retirements of the Fire Chief and Town Administrator.

“During my tenure, I’ve demonstrated a strong work ethic, an independent mind-set, the ability to make difficult decisions, and a commitment to our Town Meeting form of government. I’ve been accessible and responsive to citizens, and have represented Hingham well, both within and outside the community.”

Prior to serving on the Board of Selectmen, Ms. Power was a member of the Hingham Advisory Committee, where she was elected by her peers to the positions of Chair, Vice, Chair, and Secretary. She served on Friends of Hingham Public Schools, the Zoning Permit Study Committee, and the Bare Cove Park Committee.

In addition to her public service, Ms. Power is a member of the Hingham Music Parents Association, the League of Women Voters, and the Hingham Historical Society. Her past volunteer and community service includes the Hingham Food Pantry, various PTO Committees, the Hingham Women’s Club, Cub Scout Pack 4, and Boy Scout Troop 1.

Ms. Power is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Manhattan College and received an MBA in Finance from the University of Notre Dame. She worked for two Fortune 50 companies in both financial and human resources roles. For over twenty years, she has worked as an Organization Development specialist, helping companies develop and implement their business and people strategies.

Ms. Power and her husband Dan are the parents of two children who attend Hingham High School.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Edmund and family

2018-Mar-03

Good Morning All,

Pete Sweeney shared the sad news of the passing of Edmund Donovan who has been in our prayers. Peter, Peter's Family and the Donovan Family extend their thanks to each of you for your prayers. Ed was called home on Tuesday, February 22, 2018. Ed rallied long enough to permit Family and Friends from Long Island to California to visit over the weekend. Ed showed his appreciation with a twitch of his eyebrows or a head nod and at the end, one last squeeze of his Wife's hand.

As Peter shared, continued prayers for Ed's Wife, Valerie, their 9 year old Son, Andrew and their extended Family would be welcome. We pray that they find some peace in the certain knowledge that their loved one is at rest in God's Eternal Embrace in the Kingdom of heaven. Thank you. God Bless.

How the Nazis Used Gun Control
By STEPHEN P. HALBROOK
December 2, 2013 9:00 AM

*** begin quote ***

In 1968, bills to register guns were debated, with opponents recalling the Nazi experience and supporters denying that the Nazis ever used registration records to confiscate guns. The bills were defeated, as every such proposal has been ever since, including recent “universal background check” bills.

As in Weimar Germany, some well-meaning people today advocate severe restrictions, including bans and registration, on gun ownership by law-abiding persons. Such proponents are in no sense “Nazis,” any more than were the Weimar officials who promoted similar restrictions. And it would be a travesty to compare today’s situation to the horrors of Nazi Germany.

Still, as history teaches, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

*** end quote ***

The facts speak for volumes. For as tragic as nay mass school shooting is, it doesn't measure in body count to what many governments has done to its own "sheeple",
