Manhattan College Supports Its LGBTQ students through LaSallian Charism
January 28, 2018 by Lizzie Sextro

*** begin quote ***

Manhattan College, a Catholic campus in New York City, established its first LGBTQ support group in the early 1980’s. Since then, the organization has grown and flourished as its members continue to raise awareness and create a safe space for LGBTQ students on campus. The school is owned by the Christian Brothers, and the outreach to LGBTQ students is very much grounded in the spirit of the Brothers’ founder: John Baptist de La Salle.

An editorial in The Quadrangle, the school’s student newspaper, emphasized the school’s three-decade commitment to LGBTQ students by examining the five major LaSallian values:

“(1) Respect for all people. (2) Quality Education. (3) Inclusive Community. (4) Concern for the Poor and Social Justice. (5) Faith in the Presence of God.”

*** end quote ***

Nice to see Alma Mater recognized for doing good deeds.

I tend to agree with, not “despite”, the Catholic teaching that has notoriously labeled “homosexual tendencies” as “intrinsically disordered.” Unfortunately for these afflicted and conflicted individuals, they can’t really reproduce and perpetuate the species. So, but, despite being “broken”, they are human beings entitled to all the rights, and to be treated with dignity. To not do that, leads us to the Nazis and their version of eugenics.

I definitely disagree with the inclusion of the words “Social Justice”  because of its left liberal political connotations. “Social Justice” seems to me to make certain classes of people entitled to “positive rights” that are merely stealing from others.

But, the first two of what I think are my core values are peace and tolerance. As I’ve ofter said and post, I’m not the arbiter of anything but my own conduct. I try to live so that my Mom would be proud of me. It’s a child-like easy to measure yardstick.

I applaud Alma Mater for its compassion in a very difficult human situation.

JOHN BUONASERA
Obituary

BUONASERA—John Daniel, DDS. Known to all as "Doc or Dr. B," died unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 7, 2018.

He was stricken while doing what he enjoyed most and did best, taking care of his patients. John was a generous, kind, good-natured neighbor, both in Manhattan and in Bridgehampton. Dr. Buonasera's first wife, Sherry Jean, died 11 years ago. Their sons, Ash, his wife Nicoletta and their children Baylor, Bella and Luca, and Bradford and his wife, Manon, and their children Mia and Madison were the joy of his life. John is survived by his devoted wife, Susan of six years, his step- daughter, Jessica Goncalves, her husband, Nuno and his newest grandbabies, Tommy and Penelope.

A Memorial Mass to honor his life is planned for 11am, Saturday, February 24 at The Church of St. Francis Xavier, 46 West 16th Street, NYC, NY 10011.

Bobby: "No, I had no vision. This was about chicks and beer. [Laughs] I can give you a long-winded, lying answer if you'd like. [Laughs] I'll tell you'll a funny story: I was in a school called Manhattan College. My father worked very hard to get in there. He put me through preparatory high school and the whole thing. I finally got into this great college, it was a Catholic college in New York City. In my second year, actually, it was my third year, I told my father I'm leaving the school because the band got a deal. He looked at me right in the face and goes 'Is this about girls and free beer?' I go 'No.' And 25 years later, I met a sports icon in New York, a guy named Mike Piazza, he was a catcher for the New York Mets. I did a bunch of benefits for him and he said 'Whatever you need, let me know.' My father and I are big Mets fans and I said, 'I need your booth, your private seats for my father's 75th birthday.' He gave me 15 tickets and filled the place with booze and hamburger sliders. My father looked at me and said 'I knew this OVERKILL thing would really work out someday.' I said 'Dad, I got a confession: When I left college, it was about girls and free beer.' It's a true story. He knew, of course. He was my father. He wasn't an idiot. [Laughs] It was kind of cool to see that story actually come around from when he asked me and when I finally admitted it to be true after three decades."

Hi John ...

Please see the attached photo - which I've had for a few weeks.

It is part of an exhibit at the New Rochelle Library. The entire exhibit is a set of photographs in the lobby, and I am not certain how long it will be there. If anyone is interested, they could just call the library.

The photo features Lou Jones and cites him as a gold medalist athlete, educator and county official. He would have attended Manhattan in the early 1950s. Later he worked there (until 1974) as dean of student personnel - which would cross my time there, though I don't recall Mr. Jones personally - unfortunately.

Hope you're well.Thanks,

2018-Feb-13

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/lohud/obituary.aspx?n=francis-x-mascola&pid=188155181&fhid=27196

Francis X. Mascola

West Nyack - On February 10, 2018, Francis Xavier Mascola passed away peacefully with his family at his side in his West Nyack home where he lived for 63 wonderful years. Frank lived a full and complete life and left a devoted legacy of fatherhood, community service and zest for life that is second to none.

Frank was the son of Salvino and Marie (Farenga) Mascola of the Bronx, NY. During WWII, Frank served in both the Marine Corps and US Army, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. His tour of duty took him to the Philippines and Japan, where he served on General McArthur's staff in Tokyo and was Chief of Economics and Labor Relations during the Japanese Reconstruction Occupation. After over 30 years of active and reserve duty, Frank retired from the US Army Reserve as a Lt. Colonel.

Frank attended Xavier High School where he was 3 sport athlete starring in football. Frank was a graduate of Manhattan College and attended the Cornell Graduate School of Industrial and Labor Relations. As one of the youngest US Commissioners, he mediated federal labor disputes throughout the country. He later established his own management consulting firm with offices in New York, New Jersey and Washington, DC. Clarkstown voters elected Frank as their representative on the first Rockland County Legislature. In 1973, he served as Chairman which at that time was the equivalent of today's County Executive.

Frank was well known for his volunteer service. He served on many boards, including the West Point Admissions Board, Nyack Hospital, American Cancer Society and the Clarkstown Board of Education. Frank was one of the founding members of The United Way in Rockland County and was honored by the American Red Cross in 1995 with the Community Service Award. Frank was a lifelong member of Rotary Internationaland later served as President of the Nanuet Rotary Club.

Despite his hectic professional schedule, Frank always made time to spend with his children. He coached Little League and Clarkstown Recreation basketball for many years. He was active with the Boy Scouts as a youngster and later as a father. Later he took up tennis and passed his passion for the game on to his children. Because of their athletic dad, all of his children learned to play tennis at the iconic Merritt Tennis Courts in Pearl River.

Frank fashioned his West Nyack home backyard like a playground paradise for his children and grandchildren. When his brood was not playing in the woods behind the house, Frank and his family were often found building more memories at the Rockland Country Club or the Nyack Field Club where Frank held active memberships. In addition to golf and tennis, Frank enjoyed gardening, swimming, and travel often organizing exotic world tours with Marcey. He loved horseback riding with his wife and daughters. Frank's other hobbies included analyzing financial data and playing the stock market. Dating from his Xavier High football star days, Frank remained an avid football fan holding West Point season tickets for decades. Some of his fondest memories were made during idyllic summer family vacations at Long Beach Island, and Lavallette, New Jersey. Frank and Marcey also treasured spending time at their other home on Hutchinson Island, Florida.

Frank is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years Mary Alice "Marcey" (Beckerle) Mascola. Frank is survived by daughter Maureen and husband Joseph Rose of Surf City, N.J.; son Thomas More Mascola and fiancée Karen Albert (sons Brett & Paul) of Nanuet; son Francis Xavier Jr. "Ted" and wife Christine (Flood) Mascola of Blauvelt; daughter Susanne and husband Thomas Humbach of West Nyack. He was predeceased by his son Jimmy. He was also a devoted "Pa" to his grandchildren; Jay and wife Nadine, Geoffrey, Conor, Darcy, Pearse, Jack, William, Teddy, Eugene and great-grandchildren Giana and Joseph III. Frank is survived by his sisters Gloria DiCarlo (late husband Gerald) and Marie Pisano (husband Ronald). He is predeceased by his sister Betty Oliva (late husband Mike). Additionally, Frank is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 and Thursday February 15, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, February 16, 2018 at St. Anthony's Shrine Church in Nanuet, N.Y. at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Special Olympics NY Hudson Valley Region, 1207 Route 9, Suite 1C, Wappingers Falls, N.Y. 12590.

Leary went on to play baseball and basketball at Manhattan College. He spent 30 years as a teacher and dean in the New York City schools system after beginning his teaching career at the now closed St. Augustine High School in Park Slope.

His wife, Claudia, died in 2016 after a three-year battle with cancer. He spoke about her to the crowd during his final home game last season and those close to him talked of how much he missed her.

“He wasn’t the same after [Claudia] died,” Fischetti said. “He could see his heart was broken.”

After complaining of stomach issues, he was diagnosed with cancer last year. Initial chemotherapy treatments went well before leveling off, according to Alesi. How quickly he died after being diagnosed still came as a surprise, Fischetti said.

Leary is survived by his three brothers, four children and seven grandchildren.

Services will be held at Joseph G. Duffy Funeral Home (255 9th Street, Brooklyn) Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral Mass is 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More Church in Breezy Point.

Westchester Hebrew High School Honors Excellence In Education at Annual Dinner

*** begin quote ***

Westchester Hebrew High School (“WHHS”), a boutique, Modern Orthodox, co-ed high school serving students from across the tri-state area, held its annual Gala Dinner on Sunday, February 11th, at the JCC of Harrison. Among its honorees were Cindy Sternklar Worenklein and Jay Worenklein, who were given the Tree of Life Award; Evan Azoulay, who received the Alumni Progress Award, and Michael Tedesco, the school’s Director of College Guidance, who was presented with the prestigious Excellence in Education Award.

*** and ***

Tedesco, born and raised in New Rochelle, graduated from Iona College and earned a Masters from Manhattan College. He began his education career in 1964 as a Religious Education teacher at Holy Family Church, later teaching at Mount St. Michael’s School and serving as a Youth Minister for the five Catholic parishes in New Rochelle before joining New Rochelle High School in 1974. So how does a devout Roman Catholic end up at a Modern Orthodox Jewish high school?

Yesterday I stood at Manhattan's center court to be recognized by the College's Bridge Program.

It recognizes faculty who bridge academics and athletics for our student athletes. I am beyond touched and honored. Bonus: the Lady Jaspers beat Fairfield!

I was glad Charlotte and Peter could be there. Kit had a show and Bill has the not flu but it might as well be. Peter took the action shot.

ENDNOTE: Alma Mater studies the ethics of self-driving cars?

2018-Feb-10

https://manhattan.edu/news/archive/2018/01/philosophy-professor-receives-grant-study-autonomous-vehicles.php

PHILOSOPHY PROFESSOR TO STUDY ETHICS OF SELF-DRIVING CARS

*** begin quote ***

Heidi Furey is part of a National Science Foundation grant focused on the dilemmas surrounding autonomous vehicles.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi recently said that he wants fully unmanned taxis serving paying customers by mid-2019. But what happens when these driverless cars are on the road?

Heidi Furey, Ph.D., an assistant professor of philosophy at Manhattan College, along with two other philosophers and a civil engineer, are working to answer those questions in a project titled “Ethical Algorithms in Autonomous Vehicles,” supported by a $556,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

Since the technology is relatively new, the challenge of working on the ethics of self-driving cars is to anticipate what sort of moral issues will arise as they are introduced and become entrenched in society. Furey and the team’s first step is to map out the ethical terrain – the ethical algorithms – and determine the best way to resolve those issues, working with faculty and students from across different disciplines at the College.

*** end quote ***

I guess it’s a worthwhile study project. I’d rather see the Injineers building them.

I’d be interested to see if they come up with a BNF — Backus-Naur Form is a syntax for describing syntax. It’s used to write a formal representation of a context-free grammar. If that doesn’t sound abstract enough for you, a grammar doesn’t have to be a programming language or even a human language, it can be any syntax that you want to describe. — for the “ethics language”.

(I was really into it when I was writing a cross compiler in my MS Comp Sci-Fi program. I could give headaches talking about it. But now I’m old and stupid.)

As a result, I formulated my meme about dikw (i.e., data, information, knowledge, wisdom).
