I’m always impressed when good folks save a life.
Yeah, they are getting paid. And, yeah, it’s their “job”. And, yeah, there was not a lot of personal risk.
But, despite all that, I’m still glad for that elderly passenger.
Of course, who pays for all of it is important. But that is SECONDARY to saving a life.

GREENWICH — Greenwich and Stamford nurses, police officers and firefighters who want a Catholic education for their children may find it a bit easier to pay the tuition bills — thanks to a local businessman and his wife.
Longtime Greenwich residents Mary Alice and Thomas O’Malley have committed $500,000 to the nonprofit Foundations in Education over the next five years to establish the scholarship fund for students to attend Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford.

Thomas O’Malley said he and his wife created this scholarship fund because they found Foundations in Education “innovative” and because Trinity Catholic offers “a superior educational product.” The O’Malleys have also made donations to Waterside School and Villa Maria School in Stamford. They gave $10 million to Manhattan College in the Bronx, N.Y., the largest donation in the school’s history, to finance a new student center. Thomas is a graduate of the Catholic liberal arts college and a former chairman of the school’s board of trustees.

2018-Jan-28In your recent endnote you wrote that DJT only said what everybody thinks about many countries in the developing world. The coarsening of the language in the public utterances of the POTUS is one issue. But since this was in the course of a discussion about immigration, the more appaling thing was his implication, that because the people would be coming from impoverished circumstances, they couldn't possibly have anything to contribute to our country. He wouldn't say the same about the WHITE people from poor circumstances in the Appalachia described in your post. It is hard to escape the racist implication of his comment - regardless of the classless way he expressed it.

Raymond Radzivila
Poughkeepsie - Raymond Radzivila passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018 after a valiant battle with cancer. Ray was born and raised in Yonkers, New York on October 2, 1923. He was extremely proud of his military service during WWII, serving in the Army in the Philippines and Okinawa with the 96th Infantry Division as a squad leader and being awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service. He received the Purple Heart Medal after being wounded, and also earned two battle stars, two presidential unit citations, as well as the Good Conduct and Victory medals. After the war, Ray attended and graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in Civil Engineering and was elected to the National Honorary Engineering Societies of Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi. He went to work for the New York State Department of Transportation and became Regional Design Engineer, working on the Interstate Highway System as well as numerous Poughkeepsie city arterial roadways, and during this time relocated to Poughkeepsie. Ray was appointed Executive Director of the East Hudson Parkway Authority in 1970, serving 10 years managing the parkways in 4 counties on the east side of the Hudson River. After, Ray joined the consulting engineering firm of Modjeski and Masters as resident engineer during the reconstruction of the west bound Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.
In 1949, Ray married his sweetheart, Theresa Fedor, who predeceased him in 2008. He was a devoted caregiver to her after she developed health problems in later life. Ray was an active volunteer fireman for over 50 years with the Red Oaks Mill Fire Company. He organized the Arlington Volunteer Firemen's Benevolent Association and was its first President. A member of St. Martin de Porres parish, he served as an usher at the 5:00 mass each Saturday for over 35 years and also assisted with the Math Counts program for a few years at the parish elementary school. During the 1980's, Ray served on the Dutchess County Traffic Safety Board, being among the first in the nation to curtail drunk driving. He also helped out at the Bingo Program at Mt. Alvernia Retreat House in Wappingers Falls, and was always available to assist his neighbors as needs arose. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Wappingers Council, the 96th Infantry Division Deadeye Association, New York State Transportation Engineers, American Legion Post 1302, Disabled American Veterans, and Retired Public Employees Association.
Ray was a master swimmer, winning numerous awards in the Empire State and the Senior Games. In addition to his love for swimming, he adored his two grandsons and enjoyed frequent luncheon dates with both. Ray is survived by them, Christopher Smith of Hartford, Ct. and and Timothy Smith of Wappingers Falls, as well as his daughter, Terri Rae Smith and son-in-law Paul. He leaves behind a multitude of dear friends and relatives, and will be sorely missed by all.
Calling hours will be 4pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, January 30th at the Timothy Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie New York 12603. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 31st at 10 a.m. at St. Martin de Porres Church, Cedar Valley Road, Poughkeepsie, NY with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery Poughkeepsie.

Good Afternoon All,
Bob Nasser '67 has shared with Lou Calvelll the sad news of the passing of another Manhattan College Jasper and proud member of the Greatest Generation, Lou Radzivila '49 BSCE. Lou, a highly decorated ( Bronze Star, Purple Heart, two Battle Stars, Two Presidential Unit Citations, Good Conduct and Victory Medals) United States Army WW11 Veteran, was called home on January 26, 2018. We pray for Lou, his Wife, Theresa (predeceased 2008) their Daughter, Terri Rae Smith, Son-in-Law Paul, two Grandsons Christopher and Timothy and their Family as the Family mourn the loss of their loved one. The Family have shared the following Obituary which includes visiting hours today, January 30 and Mass of Christian Burial tomorrow, January 31, 2018 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Bob Nasser shared an interesting story that I share with you. After the War, Ray applied to Manhattan College. He was turned down because of his High School Record and had to take a test. Ray did very well on the test and was accepted at Manhattan and the rest, we might say, is history as you will read in Ray's Obituary from Bob and Jasper Jottings. Thank you Bob. Thank you all. Airmont - William D. Tobin Sr. of Airmont, NY passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on January 27, 2018. William was born in the Bronx, NY, October 2, 1925. He was the son of Irish parents William and Mary Tobin and brother of John Tobin. He married Diane Y. Butler on June 2, 1948. His greatest joy in life was his four children, ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
William graduated from Manhattan College with a Master's degree. He was a WWII veteran with tour of duty in the Navy aboard the S.S. San Francisco. He lived most of his life in Rockland County, NY. William was a school teacher in the Nanuet school system for 20 years. He loved to make people smile. William was ordained at St. Patrick's Cathedral in 1979 and spent the next 25 years serving the parish of St. Margaret's in Pearl River, NY as its Deacon. He spent his life in service to his community notably to the church, Summit Park Hospital and residential visits to the infirm. William lived his life following the Deacon's credo "to serve". His spiritual guidance resides in everyone who met him.
Services and interment were private. Arrangements entrusted to Scarr Funeral Home, Suffern, NY.

Accomplished and prominent local doctor Arthur Gualtieri has recently passed away...
Dr. Arthur Gualtieri, MD, JD, was a lifelong resident of Astoria, affiliated with Mount Sinai Queens, and known for his community service and activity on many boards. Accomplished and prominent local doctor Arthur Gualtieri has recently passed away.
Dr. Gualtieri received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Manhattan College in 1961 and worked at Charles Pfizer & Co. as a process chemist. He went on to earn a master’s degree in management from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1966, later teaching Management Principles and Organizational Behavior at Manhattan College School of Business.
Gualtieri went to St. John’s University School of Law while working in Colgate Palmolive’s legal department. After earning his Juris Doctorate degree (1971), he was admitted to the New York State Bar, and worked as a patent attorney for four years at Colgate-Palmolive (1968 – 1972) he then went to work at a law firm on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan practicing various areas of law. He was a member of the Queens County Bar Association, American Bar Association and the Columbia Lawyers Association. Recently he had been admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States.
Gualtieri did basic research at SUNY Downstate Medical School. He got his MD at Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Mexico School of Medicine in 1976 and the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Rutgers University Medical School Fifth Channel Program 1977. Gualtieri completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Overlook Hospital in New Jersey and went on to complete a gastroenterology fellowship at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan.
In 1987 Dr. Gualtieri accepted the position of Associate Administrator of Medical Affairs at Astoria General Hospital, which has become Mount Sinai Queens, and he later became Medical Director (1987) and Vice President (2001) at MSQ. In 2005 he moved on to become Deputy Commissioner, Healthcare Access and Improvement Division, of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Dr. Gualtieri is a diplomate of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. He is also a member of the Medical Society of the County of Queens, the Medical Society of the State of New York, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Physician Executives.
Since 1990 Gualtieri was a member of the board of directors of the Astoria Civic Association; since 1992 he was a member of the board of directors of United Community Civic Association; since 1993 he was a member of the board of directors of SHAREing & CAREing; since 2008 he was a member of Mount Sinai Queens Hospital Advisory Board and Chair of the hospital’s Community Advisory Board. Since 2012 he had been President of the Kiwanis Club of Astoria/Long Island City.
He lived in the Upper Ditmars section of Astoria with his wife, Roberta.
The visitation for Dr. Arthur Gualtieri was held at Joseph Farenga & Sons Funeral Home (38-08 Ditmars Blvd., Astoria) on Sunday and Monday, January 28 and 29. The funeral was held on the morning of Tuesday, January 30 at St. Francis of Assisi Church (21-17 45 St. in Astoria) and he was laid to rest at St. John Cemetery in Middle Village. Many family and community members were on hand.

Just as I think the Gooferment should have no roll in “marriage”, I think its roll in “abortion” is all wrong.
This is, first and foremost, a very private decision of a Mom. One size fits all Gooferment solutions is not the way to change “hearts and minds”.
To this fat old white guy injineer, it’s like putting a screw with a hammer. (No humor intended!)

The Federal Gooferment shouldn’t be forcing people of conscience to pay for things they find abhorrent.
The Federal Gooferment shouldn’t be using anyone’s money to influence public policy in foreign countries.
The States should be the logical place where “abortion and contraception” should be made. If not, even closer to the people.
The Right To Lifers need to recognize that once a child is born, responsibility doesn’t end.
The Pro-Choicers need to recognize that they are advocating murdering a human being for convenience.
Everyone needs to turn down the volume and turn up the compassion. As Judge Judy says: “Put on your listening ears”.
Everyone needs to think about the meme that “we” may have aborted the next Motzart, the next Hawking, the person to cure cancer, or maybe the person to bring about world peace.
Rich white women and rich make politicians should stop saying that contraception is too expensive for ordinary people to pay for; that just trivializes the issue.
Abortion should be a rarity; not a convenient form of birth control.
And why was the Big Media silent in its coverage of this “march”, while over covering the “other” march. (Could it be because it was “leftist”?)
