Alabamian with diabetes built her own artificial pancreas, gives away plan for free
Updated May 23, 2017; Posted May 23, 2017
By Lee Roop lroop@al.com

*** begin quote ***

Dana Lewis is a good name to remember the next time you hear somebody say Alabama's mostly good for football and barbecue.

Lewis, a University of Alabama graduate who grew up in Huntsville, used social media, computer skills and mail-order parts to invent an artificial pancreas for people with diabetes. Along with co-inventor and husband Scott Leibrand, she's now giving her discovery away.

The device is a success - hundreds of people are using it, including Lewis - and it is bringing the young inventors increasing attention. Just this spring, Fast Company put the 28-year-old Lewis on its 2017 list of America's 100 "most creative people in business."

Diabetes is caused when the pancreas fails to make the insulin that helps the body turn glucose from sugar and carbohydrates into energy. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the blood stream. With too much insulin, it can fall to dangerously low levels. For diabetics, staying in the safe center is a constant challenge.

*** and ***

It was December of 2014 when Dana's system was fully working. "I pretty much knew immediately this is not something I can keep to myself," she said.

To make and distribute it would violate federal regulations, and to become a company would mean dealing with those regulations. But there is no rule about launching a blueprint on the Internet. "So that's what we did," Lewis said, "and that's why we called it Open APS, which stands for open-sourced pancreas system."

You can go to openaps.org now and see Lewis's documentation and her code. You can look at the reference design and decide, in her words, "Do I want to do this?" You can also watch her explain the system further here.

*** end quote ***

This demonstrates to me that the Gooferment slows stuff down.

We could have had this device years ago.

If someone was willing to assume the risk for the reward offered, then why should the Gooferment be in the picture at all?

I wonder what having this device a decade or two earlier might have been.

Argh!

JOBIT: Olivieri, Richard E. Sr. [MC1963 RIP] 2017-Dec-16

2017-Dec-17

https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/pilotonline/obituary.aspx?n=richard-e-olivieri&pid=187552148&fhid=23368

Richard E. Olivieri, Sr.

Va Beach - Richard Olivieri, 77, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2017, surrounded by the embrace of his loving family in the comfort of his own home. Beloved father, husband, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, Richard will be greatly missed by all who experienced his love, guidance, charity, and wisdom.

Left to cherish his memory and warm spirit are his loving wife Maureen, sons Richard (Jennifer), Chris, John (Katherine), and Michael (Chelsea), daughter Rosemary(Peter), and grandchildren Ethan, Anna, Cora, Grace, Mason, Archer, and Cameron Olivieri, all of Virginia Beach, and his sister and brother-in-law Pat and Peter Racanello, and brother Robert, all of Florida.

Richard was born on September 20, 1940, to Emil and Clara Olivieri in Jamaica, NY. He was a graduate of La Salle Military Academy and Manhattan College. He married the love of his life Maureen on June 6, 1963, and soon moved south to the new city of Virginia Beach, VA, to start his family and career.

Over the next half century he used the compassion and discipline instilled in him by the Christian Brothers at La Salle, and his father's business savvy and passion to build thousands of homes for Virginia families and businesses. As a home builder and real estate developer, his company Pembroke Commercial Realty found success alongside the explosive growth of this new city, Virginia Beach, which he loved so much. His company developed many projects, including Pembroke Mall, Aragona Village, Pembroke Manor, and Timberlake.

Richard was an active and dedicated member of his church, Star of the Sea, the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club, a founding member of the Bayville Golf Club, and a Director Emeritus of the Tidewater Builders Association. He was extremely generous, helping all those in need that he could, especially Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, and the United Way.

Richard was known for his wisdom, compassion, sense of humor, and generosity. And his love of golf a lifelong avid golfer, the joy and relaxation golf brought him (and those lucky enough to experience a round or two with him) was only surpassed by his love of spending time with family and friends. He leaves behind countless memories of good times, especially his seat at the head of the table at all those famous Olivieri family dinners with chairs and extra tables stretching out of the dining room and kitchen into the rest of the house.

The family wishes to thank Richard's physicians, Doctors Gregory Warth, Steven Warden, Mark Fleming, and Scott Williams, for their kind and compassionate care.

The family will receive friends Monday, December 18th from 6:00 8:00 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel with a Wake Service at 6:00 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by Father Esteban DeLeon at 12 p.m. Tuesday, December 19th at Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Memorial donations can be made to United Way of South Hampton Roads, Toqueville Society, 2515 Walmer Ave, Norfolk, VA 23513, CHKD Child Abuse Program, 935 Redgate Ave, Norfolk, VA 23507, or Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1404 Pacific Ave, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com

COMMENT: Bryk, William (MC1977) on the Vietnam War

2017-Dec-17

During the Vietnam War, my mother, who has gone on to join the majority, offered to arrange for me to leave the United States to join relatives in Canada.  I told her that I could not do that.  I didn't want to be killed in a war I believed unjust.  I also could not abandon my country. I could not have looked myself in the mirror if I left others to do the dirty work. After I made that decision, I received my number in the draft.  It was somewhere in the 300s.  I would not have been called up.  Sheer luck.

Bryk, William (MC1977)

[JR: I was drafted but “volunteered” for the Air Force. I was a conflicted “child” (in understanding; not age) at the time but knew that this (undeclared) “war” was just a disaster. Luck of the draw left me in Maryland; a lot of good people were not so “lucky”. I know that the “casualties” extended to entire families thanks to Agent Orange and who know what else. Now in my “old age”, I just want to bring all the girls, boys, women, and men home now!  Unfortunately no one listens to the vets. Have yet to meet one who supports our current foreign policy. William Philip Casciani, 68

William Philip Casciani, age 68, passed away in his Staten Island home on Dec. 18, 2017, surrounded by loved ones - his wife and children, and sister.

Born in Brooklyn to Alfred and Margaret Casciani, William "Bill" was the oldest of 10 children and grew up in the Lower East Side, Manhattan. He and his family moved to Staten Island where he resided most of his life.

Bill is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary, son, Richard, daughter, Jennifer, and daughter, Lauren with son-in-law, Brad and their children, Brianna and Becca. Dapa B will be dearly missed by his granddaughters, wife and children, as well as his nine siblings and extended family.

Bill had a long successful career in financial services, starting as a CPA and Audit Senior with Oppenheim Appel Dixon, and Co., climbing his way up to manager, then partner. From there he moved on to SB Lewis & Company as general partner, finance and operations, Mabon Securities as managing director and CFO, Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder as senior v.p., operations, which later became Natixis Bleichroder where he was chief operating officer. Bill retired at age 60. He was a member of the AICPA and NYSSCPA.

In addition to his rewarding and impactful career, Bill was also an exemplary father, grandfather, husband, and brother to siblings. Born to lead and motivate, he served as an incredible example of strength, determination, resilience, dedication, and courage. An avid reader with a thirst for knowledge, Bill also supported all of the educational institutions that he and his family proudly attended and graduated from, including his alma mater Xavier and Manhattan College, Staten Island Academy, Fordham University and NYU.

He also believed in giving back and helping others, and donated to numerous charities throughout his life including Wounded Warrior Project, the American Cancer Society, and Meals on Wheels to name a few.

Bill enjoyed life, and was not afraid of a challenge. He had a passion for flying and obtained his pilot's license; loved listening to music and the guitar, and taught himself how to play; enjoyed cooking and became a self-taught star chef in our family kitchen; loved numbers and finance, and climbed his way to the top of every company he joined, creating positive change along the way. Heavily interested in politics, he had no problem being candid and sharing his opinions. He enjoyed being by the water, at his home down the shore, and a glass of red wine to end the night along side his furry pal, Oscar. He passes his dreams and journey on to his loved ones, who will forever cherish and honor his legacy.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Visiting Nurses Hospice Care for their support in his final weeks at home, where Bill and family wanted to be.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions be made to the Cancer Research Institute. His memorial will take place at Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Ave., Staten Island, N.Y., on Tuesday, Dec. 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. as well as Wednesday, Dec. 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday morning at 9:45 a.m. at St. Clare's Church, 110 Nelson Ave, S.I. PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for two

2017-Dec-22

Good Morning All,

RE: Was called home

Mike McEneney asks for our prayers.

We pray for the Widow of a very good Friend of Mike's. Mrs. Theresa Sise. We pray for Mrs. Sise and her Family as they mourn the loss of their loved. May she rest in Peace.

We pray too for Mrs. Younger, as Mike says, a spry 93 year old, who getting out of the pool a couple of days ago, fell and broke her leg. We pray that she heals fully and quickly free of any complication.

Thank you. God Bless.

Colon, Philip J. (MC1962)

*** begin quote ***

(CNN) - Picture this: A man is admitted to the hospital, unconscious, with a history of serious health problems and a high blood alcohol level. He has no identification and no family with him. On his chest, he has a tattoo: "Do Not Resuscitate."

What would you do?

*** end quote ***

Seems obvious to me.

It does raise a moral question. Is that the same thing as suicide?

Aren’t we morally obligated to live out our lives for as long as we have? And, that means taken advantage of the things society has available to prolong life?

And when you get right down to it, if we don’t eat our veggies aren’t we doing the same thing.

See that’s why fat old white guy injineers shouldn’t think too hard. We’re too logical. Now pass the broccoli.

Luckily, I’m not in charge of anything anywhere.

Carry on.
