While each story is interesting, I was looking for something to empower and motivate me.
Unfortunately, none were about fat old white guy retired injineer who’s a poor-in-spirit old senior citizen on a fixed income. Then I realized the common thread in each story was that that motivation has to come from within.
I guess one has to learn from one’s failures to “reboot”.

MAHOPAC, N.Y.— A passion for ice hockey and a desire to steer children’s lives in the right direction are only a few reasons that Mahopac resident Mario Martirano was chosen by USA Hockey Magazine for September’s coach of the month honor.
“It’s a mystery to me,” Martirano said of how he was found by the magazine to be selected. “I’m a nice guy and the kids like playing for me. We’ve won a couple of tournaments, but it’s still a mystery to me. I guess I’m well liked in the rink and in the community.”
Originally from Yonkers, the 51-year-old Martirano has played hockey since age 8 and started coaching in his 20’s with Manhattan College, his alma mater, where he played both baseball and ice hockey.

Walker has resigned as the deputy county executive of Putnam County to take the position of assistant secretary for the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability at the U.S. Department of Energy. He was confirmed last month by the U.S. Senate and administered the oath of office by Energy Secretary Rick Perry.
Walker, a Mahopac native, lives with his wife, Lisa, and their children in Pawling. He has been part of County Executive MaryEllen Odell’s administration since she took office on Nov. 11, 2011.
Walker has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College and a Juris Doctor in law from Pace University. He founded Modern Energy Insights Inc., a boutique consulting firm that specializes in evaluating and identifying risk for critical infrastructure.

Obituary
Vero Beach, FL - James D. Wallace died Oct 23rd, 2017. He was born in Bronx, New York on February 3, 1924 to Michael J. and Josephine Wallace.
He attended Regis High School and graduated from Mount St. Michael High School before enlisting in the Navy Air Corps in 1943.
He trained as a radio operator in a torpedo bomber squadron in Florida then transferred to California, where he continued training until the war in the Pacific ended. He was discharged in 1946. He then attended Manhattan College.
He married Katherine Broderick in 1946, and in 1954 the couple moved to New Rochelle, NY, where Jim was an active member of Holy Family church. For more than 40 years he was a sales agent for Allstate Insurance Company in several midtown New York offices. In 2009, after 15 years as snowbirds, the couple moved fulltime to Vero Beach.
Jim was predeceased by a son, James Dawson Wallace Jr. and a granddaughter Maeve Wallace. He is survived by his wife of 71 years; five daughters: Mary Norman of Toronto, Canada; Katherine Smith of Delray Beach, Fl.; Virginia Wallace of Buffalo, NY; Therese Wallace of Orlando, Fl.; Margaret Webb of Rancho Palos Verdes, Ca; four sons: Thomas of New York, NY; Gerald of White Plains, NY; Timothy of Sonoma, Ca., Andrew of Hinsdale, Il.; 27 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.
Interment will be 1 pm Nov. 24 at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Ave., Hawthorne, N.Y. A reception will follow at 3 pm at the Rye Presbyterian Church Assembly Hall, 882 Boston Post Rd., Rye, N.Y.Published in the The Journal News on Nov. 15, 2017

Every year NUI Galway awards honorary degrees to a small number of individuals who have distinguished themselves in various walks of life.
This year the governing Authority of NUI Galway invited Professor James Murphy to accept the Degree of Doctor of Literature, in recognition of his commitment to promoting Irish Studies globally and developing cultural and academic relations between Ireland and the United States.
Professor Jim Murphy is Director Emeritus of the Irish Studies Program at Villanova University. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1940 of Irish parents. His mother was Kathleen Sloyan from Ballyhaunis and his father was Patrick Joseph Murphy from Aughakiltubrid, Cloone, Co. Leitrim. That background shaped his connection to Ireland, especially the West, and subtly led him to his academic career.
“I didn’t realise it at the time, but Ireland was always in the air of my growing up. I breathed in a world of brogues and ballads, and out of that raw material of Irish voices, I gravitated to Irish writers and felt at home there. I was always a reader, but in college I first read Joyce and Yeats. I found there voices and a world that I knew at once. It was all over for me.”
The first in his family to go to upper-level study, he did his academic work at Manhattan College (B.A.), Niagara University (M.A.), and Temple University (Ph.D.). His doctoral work was ‘The Book of Kells, James Joyce, and the Irish Literary Tradition’.

George E. Cranston, 92, in Stamford, CT, November 15.
George was born in Brooklyn, NY to Rufus F. and Elizabeth L. (Wheeler) Cranston.
He attended La Salle Academy, Manhattan College, and Columbia University School of Engineering where he earned his degree in civil engineering.
George served in the Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Lieutenant. He served in the Pacific Theater as a civil engineer.
In 1950 he married Jeannette M. Farrell, also of Brooklyn, and they lived for over two decades in Baldwin (Town of Hempstead), NY with their five children. Since the early 70s he and Jeannette made their home in Stamford, CT.
He worked as a foreman on the construction of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel in New York, as a chemical engineer for many years at Chemico in New York, and was later President of Peabody Process Systems in Connecticut. In his work he quietly changed the lives and improved the health of millions of people around the world as a pioneer in the industrial air pollution control business.
A devout lifelong Roman Catholic, George was an active and beloved member of the Emmaus Community in Stamford, CT for over forty years. He was known for his quiet and unassuming generosity, providing expert assistance with home repairs and other tasks for his friends, neighbors, and community members. He was an active volunteer for Adopt-a-House and Habitat for Humanity, helping restore abandoned buildings to create permanent homes for low-income families.
He lived his last four years of life at Edgehill in Stamford, where he was a warm and caring presence in many residents' lives.
George enjoyed an active life, filled with travel, racquetball, and especially golf. He was a longtime member of the Country Club of Darien. George was a man of integrity, respected colleague and employer, a great friend, devoted husband, gentlemanly companion, and terrific father.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannette. He is survived by his children, Jane of New York, NY, Peter of Dunwoody, GA, Judy of Rochester, NY, Kevin of Boston, MA, and Meg of Los Angeles, CA, grandchildren Peter, Catherine, and Amber Cranston, and Spenser Kuipers, and his many friends and community members.
A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of St. Cecilia in Stamford, November 18 at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held November 17 from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT 203-327-1313. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in George's honor to the Emmaus Community.

Christopher Morrison 31 mins · I woke with a start this morning at 6:25. I stumbled out of bed, threw on clothes, and ambled down the hall to my son's room. We were supposed to be on the road at 6:30.A few minutes later, we were in the car racing up the New Jersey Turnpike on our way to the Bronx. Our destination? Van Cortland Park, or as I think of it, Manhattan College's front lawn. He was running in a cross-country race. I was the chauffeur.
As he sat beside me, tuning up his spikes with his little spike wrench, I asked him: "Hey, where do you want to go to college?"He is a sophomore in high school. Plenty of time. But these moments where he cannot squirm away from topics like this will begin to vanish. That is what happened with his older siblings. College decision day will be here and I will wish I had talked more about choices to be made.

And to understand the rise of income inequality over time, thanks to the erosion of business values and corporate beneficence, there’s no more instructive story than this tale of two janitors:
Ms. Evans was a full-time employee of Kodak. She received more than four weeks of paid vacation per year, reimbursement of some tuition costs to go to college part time, and a bonus payment every March. When the facility she cleaned was shut down, the company found another job for her: cutting film.
Ms. Ramos is an employee of a contractor that Apple uses to keep its facilities clean. She hasn’t taken a vacation in years, because she can’t afford the lost wages. Going back to school is similarly out of reach. There are certainly no bonuses, nor even a remote possibility of being transferred to some other role at Apple.

As I was often saying in my role as the the big fat old turkey hisself coaching job search to the middle-aged fat old white guys who were RIFed, “downsized”, or just tossed out like the trash — like I was, there is no flashing “Kmart blue light special” light to tell you that the world changes and it’s adapt or die.
I often told those sad old souls, as well as any youngster who would listen, that
“Success for your generation is: (1) ruthless financial discipline -- no bad debt; (2) a life long interest in learning -- education -- a degree -- they can't take it away from you; (3) a NON-OFFSHORABLE white collar job in order to save big bux; (4) a blue collar skill for hard times -- never saw a poor plumber; (5) one or more internet based businesses -- your store is always open; (6) a free time hobby that generates income; and (7) a large will-maintained network of people who can "help" you."
This “tale” of two janitors is an example of the silent change that captures so many “victims”.
While I am sad that Ms. Ramos is in the described state, as are so many others, it’s all their own fault.
I’m not heartless or hard-hearted but USA native’s need some “tough love”.
This current generation has become complacent and lulled to sleep by the propaganda that they are special and success is their birthright.
IRL, in nature, it’s adapt or die. So too for humanity. We only get to stay on the top of the food chain by our unique God-given ability to adapt and survive.
Look at what our forefathers did and endured to get us to this place. Do we do or endure even half of what they did?
Ms. Ramos, and all like her, are de-humanized as an actor who has free will and free choice. Does Ms. Ramos save? Does she work hard? Probably, but does she work smart? Probably not. Does she have a side hustle? Or does she lay back and let the world pick her course.
Is it hard to break out? Sure. But most times, it’s our “map” (i.e., memes and paradigms) that keep us in chains. Trained to be weak like the baby elephant, who can’t escape the leg chain, learns to be helpless and, as an adult elephant, doesn’t even think about breaking the relatively flimsy rope on its leg.
Argh!
To all the Ms. Ramos’ out there: Wake up! Seize and use your power.
