Mac was raised in historic Cold Spring, NY along the Hudson River and grew up delivering the morning & evening newspaper and selling pennants at West Point football games. He graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in Engineering in 1954 and lettered in track where he specialized in the discus. He enlisted in the Navy in 1955 and after completing Naval flight training was designated a Naval Aviator. His first squadron was the VF-84 "Jolly Rodgers", where he flew the world famous Chance-Vought F8 Crusader off aircraft carriers. The Crusader was the first Navy fighter capable of flying 1,000 mph. He then became an instructor pilot in the F8, and later flew it extensively in combat during the Vietnam War. He retired at the rank of Captain, USN after a career spanning more than 20 years. While stationed at NAS-Cecil Field Jacksonville, Mac met the love of his life, Carolyn Jones whom he married in 1963. They enjoyed the Navy life and had many adventures around the world. The arrival of their daughter Kelly made their family complete. Upon retiring from the Navy he moved to Ormond Beach, FL in 1980. He pursued a career in real estate with Hudson Realty and Benny Miles Realty and took great pleasure in helping his clients find the home of their dreams. Over the years with many great friends, he regularly played racquetball at Omega 40 and golfed at River Bend Golf Club. He was an active member of St. Brendan's Catholic Church where he was affectionately known as "Mr. Mac" and for many years cherished leading "his Gang" of altar servers. One of his greatest joys was when his grandson Andrew was able to become an altar server. Papa instantly became Andrew's biggest unconditional fan whether on the ball field, in the classroom, or trying to do the right thing. In every facet of his life Mac always found a way to weave in a good joke or two and always left people laughing with his joke telling. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Carolyn Jones McCarthy, Ormond Beach, daughter Kelly McCarthy Acebal (Christopher), grandson Andrew Acebal, Ormond Beach and many nieces and nephews. Dear Friends of Addis Hope, Once again, my apologies for including you in this mass mailing rather than individually. Some time ago our Addis Hope School which we had been renting for several years from local authorities was demolished along with other structures in the neighborhood so that the property could be used to construct government offices. Since we had a renewable two year contract, the authorities said they would provide replacement school classrooms. Despite numerous court appearances and delays, this has not happened and it looks like it won’t. What to do? Several years ago a generous donation from a friend allowed us to purchase two shops in a new mall. My colleague, Ruth Girmay, teacher and artist, who really began with me the program sixteen years ago has had the idea of training single parent mothers of street families in making leather goods. To this end, she took courses in making handbags, satchels etc. as an income generating activity. Addis Hope would send the street children of these women to local government schools and pay for their school materials and uniforms until they graduated from Grade Eight. Though this reformulation of the Addis Hope program will probably come as a surprise to you, our donor partners, we continue to count on your support for our single parent destitute and marginalized families. I will write more on this new development in future mails to you. Since Thanksgiving is an American celebration of family, I ask you to include our Addis Hope street families at your table as you have done in the past. It was at this time that the Abbey of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity, a Trappist monastery in the town of Huntsville in Utah, was founded, and at its peak it housed 84 monks. Some 70 years later, only a handful of elderly men remain, and without a younger generation to continue the legacy, the monastery has been forced to close its doors. This poignant short film from RadioWest quietly observes the monastery’s last moments, as the elderly monks commence their final, sparsely attended service and pack their bags for an uncertain future. I think a good (now deceased) friend was one of those monks for a while in the 50's - 60's. He was eventually a great contributor to our Church as a husband, father, teacher and university prof... 2. It could be the fate of our Church if the leadership - below Francis - won't read the "signs of the times". The discipline of priestly celibacy was only introduced in the second millennium of the church - and only in response to property inheritance questions. We could easily allow married priests to keep parishes open and the Eucharist available to many more. Indeed, Pope Francis has invited episcopal conferences to ask for the OK. Why won't the bishops step-up? Our pastor, this week, said he could easily pick out 20 or 30 guys in our congregation who could be priests. Of course, he also said, that he could find another 20 or 30 who weren't males who could also fit the bill.... There's a fair amount of historical evidence that women presided at home "churches" in early Christianity. Kunz (80) of Shrewsbury, formerly of Worcester and Freeport, LI NY died peacefully on November 4, 2017 after a long battle with renal disease. He was a graduate of LaSalle Military Academy and Manhattan College. Otto was an only child and first generation American born in Oceanside, NY to German immigrants, Otto and Lottie Kunz. He was a lifelong Restaurateur. Most notably, after his father's death, he took over the family business and became the proprietor of the Sea Breeze Restaurant located on the waterfront in Freeport, NY and then of the Alcove Tavern also on Long Island. Otto moved to the Worcester area in the 1980's and held various Maitre'd and bartending positions in Worcester until his retirement. He was an avid sports fan and always rooted for the local teams. He also enjoyed spirited political debates over an ice cold beer. Otto is survived by his five children: Otto E. and his wife Karen, Cathy Boulay and her husband Steven, Jim and his wife Nivin all of Shrewsbury, Chris of Manchester, CT and Bill and his wife Teresa of Weymouth. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and one great grandson. Bill was raised in Brooklyn and graduated from Rutgers University. He was an All American swimmer both as a collegian and as a US Masters competitor. He served his country in Korea then began a long career as a swimming coach including stints at Manhattan College and then Adelphi University, where he mentored three NCAA All-Americans. He was inducted into the Adelphi University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. Bill was a trusted mentor to generations of swimmers of all ages and skill levels. Born in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1937, Maggie Wilmore is survived by two brothers: Donald H. Wilmore (and his wife Betty) and John W. Wilmore (and his wife Beverly), all of Boyce, LA; eleven nieces and nephews; many 'great' nieces and nephews; and numerous dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents Bessie and Lester Wilmore, and her brothers James W. Wilmore, Harold Wilmore, and Christopher D. Wilmore. Maggie grew up in Alexandria and Boyce, LA. At 18, she joined the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth near Bardstown, KY. She taught elementary, junior high and adult education in Louisville, KY for 13 years. She received her B.A. degree from Catherine Spalding College in Louisville, and a Masters Degree from Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY. In 1968, Maggie left the order and moved to the Washington D.C. area. She worked for the Department of Health and Human Services for 25 years, retiring in 2000. As Chief of the department's Women and Children's Programs in the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, Maggie developed and administered a comprehensive federal grant program which brought treatment to addicted women and their children throughout the country. She received national recognition for this pioneering work. Later, she served as a consultant to the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse training personnel in the substance abuse treatment programs. Maggie was generous with her time. She volunteered for hospice, as Coordinator of the Bereavement Services for the Health Department of Queen Anne's County, MD and she trained parishioners where she worshipped how to minister to the bereaved. In her Annapolis home community of Heritage Harbour, Maggie volunteered for the Caring Network and served as Chair of the Decorating and Recycling committees. Maggie was an active member of Trinity Cathedral Episcopal Church in Easton, MD; Holy Trinity in Bowie, MD; and at the time of her death, St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Annapolis, MD. At St. Margaret's, Maggie served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister, a Eucharistic Visitor and part of the Stephen Ministry. She was a member of the Vestry, the Altar Flower Guild and the Music and Spiritual Enrichment committees and she chaired the Worship and Lay Pastoral Care Commissions. A lyric soprano, singing was Maggie's sincerest form of worship. She was a devoted member of St. Margaret's Church Choir and she sang with the Annapolis American Guild of Organists and the Heritage Harbour Chorus. Contributions in Maggie's honor may be made to Habitat for Humanity, the St. Margaret's Music Program, and/or the Heritage Harbor Chorus. Her memorial service will be held at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 1600 Pleasant Plains Road, Annapolis, MD 21401 on Tuesday, November 16, 2017 at 1:30 PM. John was born August 23, 1958, in Ridgewood, New Jersey, the son of Adolph and Helen Medica. He is survived by his wife Megan Salzman Medica, of 32 years, and his brother James Medica; brother-in-law Joseph M. Salzman; sister-in-law Kimberly Medica; and his nephews, John Paul and Owen Christopher, and niece, Lauren Holly. He is also survived by many first and second cousins, his Uncle, Pat Santoro, and an Aunt, Donna Medica. He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law and sister-in-law, and several additional aunts, uncles, and one cousin. He was a globally recognized senior executive in the technology industry, beginning his career at Apple Inc. for ten years, and then with Dell Inc. for fourteen years, where he retired as Senior Vice President and Co-Leader of the Product Development Organization. In his final professional position, he served seven years as Vice Chairman and Group Corporate Advisor for Compal Electronics Inc., based in Taiwan. He earned his BSEE at Manhattan College in NY, and a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Wake Forest University, Babcock School of Business. A long-time resident of The Plains, Virginia, he invested his time advising technology companies, sailing, and playing golf. Together with his wife Megan, John was an ardent supporter of animal welfare and rescue groups, higher education, and had recently become involved with The Boys and Girls Clubs of America. He enjoyed his leisure time as a member of the Saint Francis Yacht Club in CA, Camden Yacht Club in ME, Caves Valley Golf Club in MD, and his favorite of all, the New York Athletic Club. John enjoyed traveling around the world throughout his life, and loved to sail extensively. Most importantly, he treasured the time he spent as the favorite uncle with his two nephews and niece, his loving family, and especially his wife. The family would like to thank the staff of Purcellville Fire and Rescue, Middleburg Fire and Rescue, and The Plains Volunteer Fire Department. In addition, the family would like to thank the care givers and physicians at Reston Hospital for their vocational excellence and tremendous support and care during the final phase of his life. I can tell you this, that I recently saw a wonderful picture of Luke actually taken last year when Luke was in Hospital. It was a scare his parents could have done without but he is OK. While In Hospital, Luke had a special visitor, Landon Collins, New York Giants Free Safety. Luke's Mom had Luke turned out in his Giant's outfit including the dark patches below his eyes. And yes, Luke was sporting his special smile, more like a Beam of Light and he was not even wearing his favorite Shades. He looked very sharp. That picture made my day. Happy Birthday Luke. First off, there’s the inevitable challenge of being different from the majority. While there is a significant population of Muslims on my campus, we are a minority and are often looked at with a lesser value in the eyes of students. However, Manhattan College (where I attend) has done an incredible job of promoting the Lasallian value of interfaith solidarity and supports the Muslim Community. As president of the Muslim Student Association, I can attest to the fact that the faculty at MC go above and beyond to learn more about our faith and how they can help us maintain our faith on campus. *** and *** Finally, there’s the element of being a woman of color on campus who chooses to wear a hijab. On one hand, there is the respect amongst students and faculty for my faith. On the other hand, there are the few people who see my hijab as a target and throw slurs my way as I walk from one class to another. For a significant time after the election of Donald Trump, there were times I no longer felt safe wearing the hijab as it made me a target for the Trump supporters. However, at the end of the day, I chose to keep wearing it as an embodiment of my faith. The perpetrators of hate speech were a small group compared to the majority who take my hijab to be a symbol of peace. Alongside this, professors and students often stop me to ask questions about Islam, which promotes a dialogue between different peoples of faith on campus. *** and *** Being Muslim on a Catholic campus comes with its fair share of challenges–but, let’s be honest, being a Muslim anywhere in America does. At the end of the day, attending a faith-based institution was the best decision I made in order to maintain the role my religion has in my day to day life. Even when people “compete”, they should be “competitors”; not “enemies”. It seems that this ethic or morality has been forgotten. Especially in sports (i.e., “little league parents”, politicians who disagree, some rude drivers on our roads). When I was taking my MBA — many moons ago — there was a concept called “co-op-etition”. Big companies sometimes complete and sometimes cooperate when it’s in their own best interest. In the USA, “we” seem to have lost that insight. Hopefully, we can heed the various admonitions on point here (i.e., love thy neighbor; hate the sin but love the sinner; first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye).
