Many of our problems, both at our institutions of higher learning and in the nation at large, stem from the fact that we’ve lost our moral compasses and there’s not a lot of interest in reclaiming them. As a matter of fact, most people don’t see our major problems as having anything to do with morality.

Doctor Williams is a perceptive analyst.
Do people have any “morality” these days at all?
Daily, I see examples both pro and con. Lost property returned intact, pro; looting in disasters, con.
For the most part, I’d like to believe the pro but keep seeing the con.

ROGER RABER
Dr. Roger W. Raber, whose advocacy work helped to usher in the modern era of corporate governance, died peacefully at his home in Washington, DC, on October 10, 2017. He was 74. The cause was complications from Alzheimer's disease.
Roger was born in Jamaica, New York. After attending Saint Anthony College in New Hampshire, he received a BA in Philosophy and an M.A. in Theology and Religious Education from Manhattan College. He later received an MA and doctorate in Administration in Higher Education from Teachers College at Columbia University. From an early interest in theology, his career evolved from educational administration to professional education, this latter area focused at first in banking and later in corporate governance.
Dr. Raber served as director of admissions at the City University of New York in the early 1970s, and as Deputy Provost at the College at Old Westbury, State University of New York, later that decade. In 1980, he became director of education for the National Association of Mutual Savings Banks in New York City, and for the next two decades he would apply his educational expertise in the banking field, moving on to become an executive vice president of the National Council of Community Bankers; president and CEO of the Center for Financial Studies in Connecticut; and managing director, member services, at America's Community Bankers.
While living in Connecticut he chaired the Weston, Connecticut School District, elected by the Weston residents to restore the integrity of the school system following several crises. During the 1980s he served as a director of Starpointe Savings Bank, staying on the board while it integrated into Dime Savings of New York. In 1999, he began his service as president and CEO of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), serving for the next seven years in this capacity, where he built an organization that was strong both financially and culturally. In his role as CEO, he responded at a personal level to NACD members affected by the tragedy of September 11, 2001, strengthened by his faith.
His ability to steer through crisis would be tested at the national level soon thereafter following the December 2001 bankruptcy of Enron, when he testified on the nature of good governance to Congress. His remarks were influential in determining the governance standards later set by the major stock exchanges.
During his tenure at NACD, paid membership grew from 1,800 to 10,000. He developed educational partnerships with a variety of organizations, including Dartmouth College, University of Southern California, Rice University, Duke University, and University of Georgia and created relationships with Association of Corporate Counsels, Financial Executives International, National Investor Relations Institute, America's Community Banks, Executive Leadership Council, World Bank/IFC) and several governance institutes in Asia, Central Europe, and Latin America. He also established strategic alliances with several leading professional Institutional Shareholder Services, the Nasdaq Stock Market, New York Stock Exchange, major D&O insurers, and leading professional service providers. Dr. Raber had a special love for the nonprofit sector. He formed a Not-for-Profit Council at NACD, and conducted the first surveys of not-for-profit governance. And although he presented boardroom education programs to many of the nation's largest public companies, his most treasured assignment was his work with the board of the American Red Cross. He practiced what he preached about governance, ensuring that NACD would have an independent and diverse board and strong bench strength. Many of the employees he mentored are still with NACD, including its current leader. Thus the Raber legacy lives on.
During his years at NACD and after retirement, he served in many advisory roles. He was a member of the board of overseers of Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Program at the U.S. Department of Commerce, and an advisory board member at the University of Delaware, Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance. He also served on the board of Washington Campus, a nonprofit facilitating a better understanding of government. His professional engagements in the NACD years included service as an advisory board member to CFM Partners in Washington, DC (banking education), James F. Reda & Associates in New York and Atlanta, a compensation practice (now part of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.), and the Project Management Institute.
In 2007, after stepping down from NACD leadership to serve as a senior advisor to the organization, he continued some of his advisory roles. In 2010, he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's, and faced into the disease with all the energy and good cheer he had given his life's earlier missions. He agreed to participate in two clinical studies at the Memory Disorders Program at Georgetown University Medical Center.
During these seven years as he came to terms with the disease, he continued his volunteer work with the West End Library, as well as So Others Might Eat, and Miriam's Kitchen, two social service programs for the homeless population in Washington, DC. Always a family man, his final years were full of joy as his beloved children themselves became parents. His last gift of many to humanity was the donation of his brain to Georgetown University Medical Center for further research with Alzheimer's disease.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dr. Marie Raber, Associate Dean of the School of Social Work at Catholic University; their son, Commander Roger W. Raber, Jr., U.S.N.R., his wife Heather, and their two sons, Jack and Elliot; as well as their daughter, Robyn Borgelt, her husband, Nate and their children, Anna and William.

Mr. Bauer is recuperating at home after his surgery and although he is not yet able to swallow due to some post op healing but he is doing better. Bernadette tells us he is aiming for a chocolate shake so that tells me he is definitely doing better. CHARLES S. FAMA
Of Ashburn, VA, long-time resident of Vienna, VA, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 12, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
He was the devoted husband of 64 years of Marie Fama (Rispoli); loving father of Stephen (Peggy) of Elizabethtown, PA, Diane of Fair Lawn, NJ, and Annette of Raleigh, NC; beloved grandfather of Austin Jarred and Lane Jarred, both of Raleigh, NC. Charlie was born June 25, 1931, in New York, New York, the son of the late Salvator A. Fama and Helen Fama (Mihalik) of New York City. He was predeceased by his sister Kitty Valdez of New York City and is survived by his sister Louise Mahoney, of St. Petersburg, FL.
He was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School in New York City. He received his undergraduate degree from Manhattan College and his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from New York University. Charlie spent his professional career in the electrical engineering and telecommunications fields with Sperry, MELPAR Incorporated, Computer Sciences Corporation and MITRE Corporation.
Charlie's favorite pastimes were fishing, woodworking and rooting for his favorite teams, the Washington Redskins and the New York Yankees. His greatest joy was always spending time in the company of his family. The light of his smile and the twinkle of his blue eyes when surrounded by his loved ones told them all how much they were treasured. His generous soul and selflessness made him a valued mentor and friend. Charlie's corny jokes and upbeat spirit will be missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. A family celebration of Charlie's life will be held at Ashby Ponds, Ashburn, Virginia, at a future date.

Remigino, 86, was a high school champion at Hartford Public and an IC4A champion at Manhattan College. As a junior at Manhattan, he went to Helsinki in 1952 and beat Jamaica’s Herb McKenley in the 100-meter final by 0.01 of a second, winning the Olympic gold medal in 10.79. On Sunday, October 15, 2017 Joseph Giantelli of Rockville, MD passed peacefully.
Joseph was born on July 20, 1965 in Mount Vernon, New York. As a young man, he participated in Boy Scouts and achieved Eagle Scout in 1983. He attended Mount Vernon High School continued his education at Westchester Community College graduating with an associates degree in electronic technologies. In 1989, he met the love of his life, Adelaide Giantelli (nee Mella) and they were happily married for nearly 25 years.
Being a lifelong learner, Joseph continued his education at Manhattan College, graduating with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1998. In 1999, Joseph and his wife moved to Maryland. For the past 10 years, he was a reactor systems engineer at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Joseph is survived by his beloved wife, Adelaide, and his children whom he adored, Andrew, Matthew and Alexa.
He was a hands-on dad and kid at heart. He was an active member of Boy Scouts, avid fisherman, and enjoyed to putter with 3-d printing.
Joseph was cherished son of Raymond and Joan Giantelli; loving brother of Raymond Giantelli, Mary Ostrander, Antonetta James, and Patricia Righetti. Joseph is also survived by his in-laws Raffaele and Marcella Mella and many loving nieces and nephews, as well as many family and friends.
The family will receive friends at PUMPHREY'S COLONIAL FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Montgomery Ave., Rockville, MD on Sunday, October 22 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 520 Veirs Mill Rd., Rockville, MD on Monday, October 23, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. Interment private. To the Editor:
My name is Andrena "Andie" Pegel and I am proud to announce my candidacy for West Milford Town Council on Republican Row A this November 7. I am a proud 21-year resident of West Milford with my husband, Tom, where we have raised our three children: Tommy (20), Gregory (19), and Allie (14) in the Newfoundland section of town.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Manhattan College, I entered the corporate work force and then started a small insurance business in Passaic County with my husband. Through the years, I have volunteered in West Milford in numerous capacities, from civic groups to youth athletic organizations to serving on the local multiple town committees. I currently serve on the Economic Development Commission, Insurance Advisory Committee, Community Against Substance Abuse Committee, Republican Committee (District 2), and as Vice President of the local Republican Club.
It is an honor to be chosen by the duly elected district representatives of the Republican Committee. These local leaders have entrusted me with the responsibility to represent all West Milford Republicans on the ballot this November, which is a task I do not take lightly. I am excited to work with my running mate Tricia Gerst, winner of the Republican primary election in June, and Councilmen McGuinness, Signorino, and Wagner to continue to make financially sound business decisions in our community.
I look forward to continuing to get to know my fellow West Milford residents over the next few weeks and hearing the concerns affecting my friends and neighbors in our great community. James was born on August 23, 1958 and passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017.
James was a resident of The Plains, Virginia at the time of passing.
He earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Manhattan College in New York and a Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University, Babcock Graduate School of Management in North Carolina.
He joined the Wake Forest University Business School Board of Visitors in 2001 and became a member of the Board of Trustees in 2009. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Manhattan College in New York and a Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University, Babcock Graduate School of Management in North Carolina.
A private memorial mass and celebration of John's life is being planned for January. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in John's name to the following organizations: Wake Forest University Debate Team Wreaths Across America Best Friends Animal Society Purcellville, Virginia, Fire & Rescue Middleburg, Virginia, Fire & Rescue The Plains, Virginia, Volunteer Fire Department Or your local First Responders Organizations.

Dear Sisters & Brothers……………………………………., I have been under treatment for a neurology condition called CIDP for the past 7 years. I go to the hospital every 3-4 months and am infused with a fluid called IVIG. I have had over 400 hours of this therapy over the past 7 years. The last treatment, a couple of weeks ago, did not go well and the treatment had to be stopped as my blood pressure went to unacceptable levels and an “irregular” heart beat was detected. Currently undergoing a several week “ cardiology “ work up to identify the issues and take corrective action if necessary/possible. Would welcome your prayers for my healing, and God’s wisdom for the doctors as they try to figure out what is the appropriate course of action…………………………..thanks………………………sent with love in Jesus………………………David

And what part does the society and its institutions play into the problems?
For my part, any more, I just don’t know. Of course, as a fat old white guy retired injineer who’s a poor old senior citizen on a fixed income, I have opinions.
And remedies:
- Get the Gooferment out of schools. Privatize Gooferment Skrules out of existence over the next 40 years.
- End the “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs”. Put the States,
Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens in the “drug” business — what will out of
work drug gangs do?
- End “Roe v Wade” and all other Gooferment interventions
into “health", "health care", "health care insurance", or something
else.
- Enforce the age restrictions on the internet by forcing the ISPs to give paying Customers (i.e., parents) the ability to identify children’s and teen’s internet accounts.
Put Gooferment back in its proper place in the USA — serving the Citizens; not the Crony Capitalists.
Argh!
