POSITRACTION: The Universe sends a cat to save a suicidal vet

2017-Oct-08

https://www.boredpanda.com/cat-rescue-soldier-life-suicide-scout-josh-marino/

Veteran About To Commit Suicide Goes To Smoke His Last Cigarette,
But Then He Hears Something In Bushes

*** begin quote ***

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is sadly a common affliction for many soldiers who have witnessed conflict, an invisible wound that continues to cause incredible suffering long after the guns have fallen silent.

“A lot of us come home without realizing we are bringing the war home with us”, says Josh Marino, a veteran of the Iraq war who suffered the effects of PTSD to such an extent that it drove him right to the brink of suicide.

“I didn’t want to deal with it anymore”, Marino said. He wrote up a goodbye note, grabbed a knife and went outside for a final cigarette in the rain. But then, from the deepest depths of despair came hope. Meowing out of the bushes next to him came a stray black and white kitten which, according to Marino, “just walked up and started rubbing up against my leg and let me pet him. I broke down crying, I burst into tears.

”From this serendipitous encounter everything changed. Marino found a new purpose in life through the friendly feline, who he named Scout, and who he credits with saving his life.

*** end quote ***

Maybe, if we are sensitive enough to other PTSD sufferers, then we can be a “cat” to someone in need.

PTSD isn’t just confined to vets.

Maybe “we” can find others who have lost hope.

JNEWS: Del Russo, Maria [MC2012] lived in this rundown nasty apartment

2017-Oct-08

http://www.refinery29.com/upper-east-side-apartment-tour-video

from Refinery29
Inside The $1800/Month Studio Of This R29 Staffer Refinery29 - 2 hours ago

Del Russo, Maria [MC2012]

What's the worst place you've lived?

"I lived in a disgusting apartment my junior and senior year of college. I went to Manhattan College up in the Bronx, and I lived in this rundown nasty apartment. We had mice, cockroaches. It was the worst of New York City real estate, and I got it out of the way very early. At the time, I was only paying $500 a month in rent because it was a three-bedroom apartment that I was sharing with four other girls. One girl had her own bedroom, and then the remaining two bedrooms had two girls in them. So there were five of us, sharing one and a half bathrooms. It was disgusting."

Did living with four other girls ruin roommates for you?

"No, it was my last roommate. She got us evicted because she didn't pay two months of our rent. After that I had given her my check and I said, here, you send in the rent this month, and the checks never got to the landlord. So she got us illegally evicted, I might add — they just changed the locks on us one day.

"After that I was like, I don't want to rely on anyone else and I'll tell people that the only person I'll live with now is a guy next. I will not live with another girl. I won't live with anyone else who is not a romantic partner. I just know what I like and I feel like the only person I'm willing to be flexible with is someone who I'm going to spend the rest of my life with, or someone who I love and who gives me good sex. That's someone I'm willing to be flexible with."

And they're likely to be flexible with you.

"Exactly. And I feel like it's a situation where you are more able to communicate your needs rather than a friendship. Friendships can get tricky sometimes."

With NCAA Payout, College Begins Jasper Jumpstart Program
Posted on October 11, 2017 by Ally Hutzler in Sports

*** begin quote ***

With a one time payout from the NCAA, the Manhattan College athletic department has started its inaugural year of the Jasper Jumpstart Program.

The idea behind the program, whose purpose is to enhance the student-athlete experience at the college, began over a year ago and was submitted to the NCAA this past summer.

All colleges and universities who are members of the national athletic association had the ability to apply for the monetary payout, but each school received a different lump sum that was directly related to the amount of scholarship dollars used by the institution during the 2013-2014 academic year.

While the funds could have been simply used to buy new athletic equipment or modify facilities, the athletic department recognized a need to enrich the overall life of a student athlete.

“Realistically the majority of our student athletes aren’t going to go and play professionally,” Will Aloia, assistant athletic director for compliance and life skills, said. “I think the majority understand that and realize that and so we need to prepare them to enter the workforce and to one day be able to buy a home– stuff like that is important.”

The Jasper Jumpstart program has three essential focus areas including academic, life skills and health and wellness.

The American, who can fill in at guard or forward, was the last player to join up with Wolves ahead of the new campaign as visa and work permit issues delayed his arrival.

Robert D. Hennigan
Obituary

Robert D. Hennigan, 92, of Skaneateles died peacefully on October 12, 2017.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ginny (Egan) Hennigan, in 2004.

Bob Hennigan was a doer. Whether in his professional, civic, spiritual, or family life he exerted commitment and confident leadership. At his retirement celebration a professional colleague humorously described him as "Occasionally wrong, but never in doubt." Bob welcomed such comments as he exemplified Teddy Roosevelt's "Man in the Arena".

A depression toddler, Bob was born in Syracuse and received his primary and secondary schooling at Most Holy Rosary and Christian Brothers Academy. Like many of his generation, Bob spent his late teenage years on the battlefields of Europe. A field promotion to Staff Sergeant presented his first serious leadership experience and developed his instinct to challenge authority. He honed that instinct throughout his life and imparted it to his children (Occasionally to his regret.)

Educated @ Manhattan College following the war and later at SU's Maxwell Graduate School, Bob enjoyed a long and consequential professional career. He spent his first eighteen professional years with the NYS Department of Health in several positions. During his tenure he was the principal architect of the Rockefeller "Pure Waters Program", which laid the groundwork for the 1972 Federal Clean Water Act.

Bob spent his final twenty-five professional years with the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Joining the faculty as the Director of the SUNY Water Resources Center, he served in a number of administrative positions retiring in 1993 as Chair of the Environmental Studies Faculty. He educated a generation of engineers, problem solvers, and civic leaders whose subsequent influence stretches far beyond the ESF campus.

Bob also served in numerous civic and professional leadership roles while at ESF. These included Executive Director of the State Commission on the Water Supply Needs of Southeastern NY, Chair of a number of Onondaga Lake committees, Chair of the Onondaga County Environmental Management Council, Chair of the County Water Quality Management Agency, and Executive Director of the NY Water Environment Association.

Bob's made his best decision when he married Ginny Egan in 1950. She enabled his professional success and together they provided a loving, stimulating, and fun household. Their greatest achievement was raising two daughters and six sons whose teenage years spanned the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Talk about commitment and confident leadership! They employed both while deftly guiding that crew through their journey to adulthood.

Bob eventually displayed the same commitment and leadership guiding Ginny through her ten year battle with Alzheimer's.He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Hennigan of Westvale, NY and Karen (Jeff) Janson of Newburyport, MA, six sons, Robert (Margie-deceased) of Rensselaer, NY, Joseph (Mary Ellen) of Skaneateles, NY, Peter (Sue) of Hampton, NH, Bill (Moira) of Glenmont, NY, Dan of Manlius, NY and Christopher (Buffie) of Indian Land, SC, twenty-two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 19th from 4 to 7 at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home, Skaneateles. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 20th, at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, Skaneateles. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be made to The Robert D. and Virginia E. Hennigan Scholarship Fund, ESF College Foundation, 315-470-6683, www.esf.edu.To send condolences visit: robertdgrayfuneralhome.com.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Ben

2017-Oct-14

Good Afternoon All,

It is with a heavy heart that I share some sad news. Joe Dillon has just let me know that Ben Benson '55  has entered Hospice Care near his home in Greenwich. Joe spoke with Ben's Wife Roseann. Ben, a good friend to many of us, a Jasper stalwart and Director of Alumni Relation for many years,  Manhattan College, supported many events at the College along with Roseann and was an easily recognized face at the College and so many functions. We pray that Ben's final days are free of pain and that he rests commfortably until called home. We pray that Ros and their Family find peace in the certain knowledge that this good man will be welcomed into God's Eternal Embrace in the Kingdom of heaven. Thank you Joe. Thank you all. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: The welfare state is EVERYONE'S enemy

RETROGRESSION
Walter Williams column: The welfare state's legacy
By Walter E. Williams Sep 24, 2017

*** begin quote ***

That the problems of today’s black Americans are a result of a legacy of slavery, racial discrimination and poverty has achieved an axiomatic status, thought to be self-evident and beyond question. This is what academics and the civil rights establishment have taught. But as with so much of what’s claimed by leftists, there is little evidence to support it.

The No. 1 problem among blacks is the effects stemming from a very weak family structure. Children from fatherless homes are likelier to drop out of high school, die by suicide, have behavioral disorders, join gangs, commit crimes and end up in prison. They are also likelier to live in poverty-stricken households.

But is the weak black family a legacy of slavery?

*** and ***

The undeniable truth is that neither slavery nor Jim Crow nor the harshest racism has decimated the black family the way the welfare state has.

*** and ***

The most damage done to black Americans is inflicted by those politicians, civil rights leaders and academics who assert that every problem confronting blacks is a result of a legacy of slavery and discrimination. That’s a vision that guarantees perpetuity for the problems.

*** end quote ***

I’ve seen the “welfare state” as an outsider when someone near and dear to be became disabled due to an auto accident. The physical injury was horrific, but what was worse was what the “welfare state” did to her. It sapped her work ethic.

Always a very hard worker, she began to get a “disability check” from the  “welfare state”. She referred to it as “her money”. She didn’t recognize that it was just enough to starve on. She also got the EBT of food stamps; not recognizing it wasn’t enough for a month. Finally, when the lights began to dawn, she has to date resisted work because she’d lose — or at least diminish — “her check”. So, up close and personal, I saw the corrosive effect of “welfare”.

I know two others who are on the real “dole” — I refer to Social Security Retirement as being on the “dole” even though it’s just stealing back what was stolen in the first place — and the one seeks extra money from the underground economy and the lottery. The other sponges off family and talks silliness about getting more “benefits” to save and go to Disneyworld.

Argh!

I just shake my head at the poverty that they are all in and are being condemned to. I’m not sure there is ANY hope.

And as fat old white guy injineer, I know I can’t solve the problem. Frustrating!
