Olympic Gold Medalist Remigino Focuses On 'Living In The Moment' As He Faces Pancreatic Cancer

The leaves are falling off the trees. The mornings are starting to become crisp. It's fall. It's cross country season.

Betty Remigino-Knapp brought her father Lindy to his chemotherapy session Tuesday morning at St. Francis Hospital. Lindy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last fall. He goes to chemo every two weeks.

She wasn't sure if he was up to going to the Conard High School cross country meet, where his youngest grandsons, Matthew and Tyler, would be running. Lindy's wife of 64 years, June, was going.

And to her surprise, Lindy said he felt good enough to go, too.

So Lindy, 86, sat on his walker and watched as Tyler, a freshman at Conard, won the 5,000-meter race in 16 minutes, 34 seconds. He and June were there when Tyler won the freshman race at the Haddad Windham Invitational meet Sept. 9 and the next Saturday, when the boys ran at the Stratton Brook Invitational. Tyler won another freshman race and Matthew was 10th in the varsity race.

Second baseman’s biography is a series of conflicting reports and mysteries
By Rhiannon Walker September 24, 2017

There is nothing simple about the life of Philadelphia Athletics second baseman Louis Castro. Outside of the fact that he played 42 games and hit .245 for the American League pennant winners in 1902 and died on Sept. 24, 1941, everything else about Castro is shrouded in mystery.

*** and ***

As a 14-year-old, his parents enrolled him into a Catholic prep school, the Manhattan College High School, in Harlem. Manhattan College was attached to the high school, and Louis went on to play ball for the collegiate team.

After pitching for Manhattan College for three years, Utica in 1898, Atlantic City the following year and in the Connecticut State League in 1901, Castro was signed by the Philadelphia Athletics’ Connie Mack as an infielder in 1902. He debuted in the Athletics’ 8-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on April 23, 1902.

RIVERDALE and FIELDSTON, Part 1

*** begin quote ***

The Henry Hudson Parkway, named for to the English explorer and navigator, who sailed past Spuyten Duyvil in the Half Moon in 1609, begins at the West Side Highway in Manhattan at West 72nd Street and continues north through the Bronx as Route 9A, where it cuts through Riverdale and Fieldston into Van Cortlandt Park; once it crosses into Westchester County, it changes its name to the Saw Mill River Parkway. It was commissioned in 1936 by NYC traffic czar Robert Moses and opened in 1937.
South of Riverdale Avenue, the HHP took over the route of the Spuyten Duyvil Parkway; east of the HHP, the Spuyten Duyvil Parkway survives, but with a name change to the Manhattan College Parkway. As such it traverses some of the Bronx’s highest hills.

This one perhaps a bit less politically incorrect so it may stay up there...

The title of your article (The Day the Music Died: Manhattan College DJs Axed by Residence Life) reminded me of one of my very early experiences at MC, back in 1969/70.  The little student union cafe at that time was called Plato's Cave, and I was there with a girlfriend.   Some guy was playing the guitar for the crowd of about 20 or 30 of us and at one point he asked that if anyone was recording he'd like them not to record because he wanted to play a song that he hadn't quite finished working on and hadn't played in public yet.

Don MacLean then launched into American Pie and we all gave him a great round of applause!

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Carol

2017-Sep-27

Good Evening All,

Mark Sheeran asks for our prayers for a good friend of his. Carol has recently been diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer. She began her first round of Chemotherapy on September 20th. I am including her story from  Sharing Bridge below. This young woman needs our prayers and we need to raise the volume for her as she begins this life challenge. Please pray for Carol and Joe as they share this challenge. We pray for God's intervention and we pray to the Blessed Virgin Mother for her intercession.

Thank you. God Bless.

# - # - #

After experiencing nauseau & abdominal discomfort, Carol decided to see her doctor the last week of August.  Operating under the assumption that she had some sort of minor GI issue, she underwent several tests - not thinking much of them.  The test results, however, warranted the scheduling of a PET scan the following day, which ultimately revealed masses in her pancreas and liver indicative of pancreatic cancer.  After the longest 2 weeks ever - waiting for further appointments and then evacuating Florida due to Hurricane Irma - the results of a subsequent biopsy further identified the type of pancreatic cancer.

Last week, Carol & Joe met with a pancreatic oncologist at the Mayo Clinic and devised a plan for treatment, which will commence with chemotherapy and also include genetic testing.  Carol begins her first round of chemotherapy September 20th.

Please keep Carol and Joe in your thoughts and prayers.

Director of the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability: Who Is Bruce Walker?
Thursday, September 28, 2017

Bruce John Walker, who has spent most of his career working for electric utilities and in energy management, was nominated September 2, 2017, to be assistant secretary of energy for electricity, delivery and energy reliability. The Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability in the Department of Energy (DOE) is the lead agency for managing the nation’s delivery of electricity to homes, businesses and government buildings. The office oversees maintenance and improvement to the U.S. electrical grid to minimize the risk of large blackouts.

The son of Dorothy and Joseph Walker, Bruce Walker is from New York. He earned a B.S. in electrical engineering at Manhattan College in 1992 and subsequently a J.D. in 2001 from Pace University, where he was the technical editor on the Environmental Law Review.

Walker worked for 18 years for Consolidated Edison, New York City’s electrical supplier, eventually becoming director of corporate emergency management, and served on the utility’s Biological Chemical Weapons Response Team. When Con Edison merged with Orange and Rockland Utilities, which serves New York suburbs, Walker became control center manager. During his five years in this position, he dealt with the power emergencies caused by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the widespread power blackout in August 2003.

More recently, Walker was vice president for asset strategy and policy for National Grid, which is an electric utility serving New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. There, he supervised the company’s five-year capital investment plan.

Walker then struck out on his own, in 2011 founding Modern Energy Insights, which specializes in evaluating risk for utilities’ critical electric infrastructure. In addition, he has been a partner in Davies Consulting, which specializes in emergency management, asset management and grid modernization and was president of SmartSenseCom, which provided technology monitoring systems. He also co-founded the Global Smart Grid Federation, a ten-nation collaboration to modernize electric energy systems.

Walker has served on the DOE’s Electricity Advisory Committee, DOE’s Advisory Committee for the Mega-Watt scale integration lab, and was a member of GridWise Alliance, which advocates for smart-grid technology. He also serves as assistant county executive in Putnam County, New York.

St. Peter's Boys High School to celebrate centennial with mass and gala

Upon their return 10 years later, there were more Christian Brothers at the school than ever before.
In 1937, the main campus of St. Peter's Boys' High School was designated a junior college of Manhattan College and staffed by LaSalle Brothers.

By 1943, the junior college closed and St. Peter's Boys High School relocated to that campus. The main campus of St. Peter's Boys High School remained there over the years on the corner of Clinton and Henderson Avenues.

ENDNOTE: A great man — Stanislav Petrov — passes with little notice

Man Who Saved the World From Nuclear Armageddon in 1983 Dies at 77
Matt Novak Today 5:20am

*** begin quote ***

On September 26, 1983, Soviet military officer Stanislav Petrov received a message that five nuclear missiles had been launched by the United States and were heading to Moscow. He didn’t launch a retaliatory strike, believing correctly that it was a false alarm. And with that, he saved the world from nuclear war. But now reports have surfaced that Petrov died this past May. He was 77 years old.

Karl Schumacher, a political activist in Germany, was one of the first people to publicize Petrov’s story back in the late 1990s. But Schumacher reportedly learned of Petrov’s death this month after contacting Petrov’s home. Petrov’s son Dmitry reported that the man who saved the world all those years ago had died on May 19, 2017. Schumacher confirmed Petrov’s death to Gizmodo this morning.

*** end quote ***

When I first heard about the story in the late 90’s, I was truly shocked at how close the human race had come to annihilation.

Now the report of his passing almost unnoticed, I am again shocked at how little the world cares for this hero.

Requiescat In Pacem, Stanislav Petrov, with my prayers of thanksgiving that you were on duty that night.
