Watch Coma Survivor Stand Up to Kiss His Wife for the First Time
After Doctors Doubted He Would Live
Good News Network

*** begin quote ***

Just days before his fifth wedding anniversary, Jonny Grant was the victim of a car accident that left him in a coma. Doctors were unsure of whether he would ever wake up, much less move.

Because he sustained a diffuse axonal injury, he was given a 10% chance of survival. Two months after the accident, however, he awoke from the coma.

Through intensive physical therapy at a Richmond, Virginia rehabilitation center, the Navy SEAL has slowly regained motor control. Though he is still unable to use his vocal cords, he communicates with his wife Laura by softly mouthing his words.

Stunning how little we know and can estimate.

It's sold out, and for the kids attending this week's upcoming Ocean Breeze Cross Country clinic, it sure looks worth it.

The week-long clinic, held in the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, will provide kids with the opportunity to learn about different aspects as to how to achieve success over the hilly courses of Clove Lakes, Van Cortland, and hopefully Bowdoin Parks in the fall season. Last year's inaugural edition drew about 100 young athletes and this year's camp has quickly filled to 150.

Led by Ocean Breeze Park Administrator and former Manhattan College standout Lauren Primerano, the camp coaches include Vincent Stasi, Stephen McLean, and Peter Liotta.

*** and ***

Current Manhattan College coach Kerri Gallagher has also competed at the highest levels of cross country and the middle distances, as she is currently the seventh-ranked American Miler All-Time. In 2015 Gallagher, who was coached by Track icon Matt Centrowitz, qualified for the World Outdoor Track Championships, representing team USA in the 1500 meters.

SportsBronx boxer ‘Irish’ Danny McAloon dies at 74
By Dave Blezow
August 5, 2017 | 5:20pm

“Irish” Danny McAloon, a professional boxer from The Bronx who had 45 fights from 1966-81, died Wednesday at age 74 at a hospice in Porter, Maine.

He had been battling Alzheimer’s disease, according to his brother, Bill McAloon.

McAloon compiled a record of 29-15-1 with six knockouts. His most notable fights came against Emile Griffith at Madison Square Garden in 1971 and Vito Antuofermo at the Felt Forum in 1973.
McAloon went the distance both times, losing unanimous decisions.

There will be a memorial service in the New York area in September for McAloon, who graduated from All Hallows High School and Manhattan College and worked as a physical education teacher at Browning School before turning pro.

He will be buried in Florida alongside his wife, Diana.

McAloon is survived by three sons (Daniel Kyle, Scott and William), two brothers (Edward and Bill) and six grandchildren.

ENDNOTE: God sent technology or eugenics?

2017-Aug-12

FROM THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Responding to yesterday’s question on the recent advances in gene editing, Joel McLemore of Georgia said: “By ‘gene editing’ do we mean eugenics? What could possibly go wrong?” John Hicks of New Jersey wrote: “If you can prevent children from being born with destructive genetic diseases, then you should do so. Put aside the fears of creating a super race (who knows what really makes a superior person) and remove the fear that parents with inheritable genetic defects will pass them on. It’s a crushing weight to discover that your newborn will lead a shortened or painful life.” And Jim Mhyre of Washington weighed in: “Genetic bioengineering, including human gene editing, is in its fragmented early stages. The science will advance, here or elsewhere. If U.S. science is to play a leadership role, it must do so at a pace that the American public can ethically assimilate. Developing or deploying human genetic-disease therapies will require proactive public education along with regulatory oversight.”

# - # - # - # - #

Well, this is a “Pandora’s Box” that has been opened.

Nothing left to do but help develop the ethical rules around it.

To do anything else is just pretend it will go away. That ain’t gonna happen!
