POSITRACTION: Senator John McCain cast the decisive NO vote

2017-Jul-30

*** begin quote ***

Dear CV Friend,

Ugh.

Just after midnight this morning, Senator John McCain cast the decisive NO vote.

A last ditch “skinny” bill to repeal portions of Obamacare (and defund Planned Parenthood for one year) failed to pass 51-49. Had McCain voted yes, Vice President Mike Pence was available to break a potential tie vote.

Two other Republicans (Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins) also voted no. Recall that Murkowski and McCain BOTH voted for partial repeal in 2015. And don’t forget this campaign ad last year that boldly stated: “John McCain is leading the fight to stop Obamacare.”

Apparently John McCain no longer approves that message.

So what’s next?

Republicans are in the hot seat. They promised again and again to repeal Obamacare. The House did their job. They’ve now tried several versions in the Senate. They tried the same repeal that they passed in 2015. They tried a modified repair and replace (BCRA). They also tried this skinny repeal.

So far Republicans are batting .000 on health care.

CV supported passage of this bill, hoping that the inevitable conference process with the House would produce a viable repeal and replace plan. Negotiations continue and it's still possible that Senate Republicans could propose a new bill that gets majority support. But failing that, Democrats are salivating at the prospect of entering negotiations this fall to bail out their insurance company cronies.

What can we do?

THE TRUTH: Republicans deserve most of the blame here. They’ve spent months haggling over how to repeal one of the worst laws in American history. People are suffering. Families want help. And Republicans have failed to deliver.

But Democrats also deserve blame. Even vulnerable Democrats up for re-election next year in states won by Trump did NOTHING. They sat on their hands and played politics. They provided cover for Planned Parenthood. And they danced with glee last night when a very modest compromise effort was defeated.

So come next year -- these puppets of Chuck Schumer need to be defeated.

Imagine a Senate with 2, 3, or even 5 more senators dedicated to patient-centered health care reform, protecting religious liberty, and providing real school choice for Catholic families.

Imagine if our entire agenda wasn't dependent on barely squeaking by with 1 or 2 votes. That's why 2018 is so important.

McCain, Murkowski, and Collins dealt the decisive blow last night. But pro-abortion Catholic Democrats in swing states must also be exposed and sent into retirement. And unlike McCain and Co., they’re up for re-election next year.

In fact, 10 Democrat Senators in states won by Trump are running for re-election next year.

We need to understand this a long fight.

And there’s plenty of time still left on the clock.

We voted and we want results.

And we won’t rest until we get it done.

Brian

MFOUND: Jaspers as student teachers

P.S. 81 Robert J. Christen
Grades K-5

*** begin quote ***

PS 81's test scores indicate roughly half the students meet or exceed state academic standardsa very respectable showing especially compared to other Bronx schools. Still, city Education Department evaluations of the school cite slightly below-average student progress compared to similar schools.

Many teachers have years of experience but at the time of our visit more than half a dozen were new, including several Manhattan College graduates who had worked as student teachers at PS 81. A young teacher said she feels like a fully contributing member of the staff. "We get heard just as equally," she said.

Principal Anna Kirrane was assistant principal at PS 81 for nine years before taking over in October 2012. She arrives at 6:30 am each day to be available to anyone with concerns, and takes the time to greet parents who drop by. Kirrane attended boarding school in Ireland as a girl, and is of Irish heritage. She urges all parents to "share your rich heritage with your child."

JNEWS: Godino, Marcel [MC2015] Skidmore College assistant men's lacrosse coach

Marcel Godino named assistant men's lacrosse coach
8/3/2017 1:11:00 PM

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Skidmore College men's lacrosse head coach Tucker Kear has announced the hiring of Marcel Godino as his assistant coach for the upcoming 2018 season. Godino will assist in recruiting, player development, offensive strategy, and scouting, among other tasks.

Godino comes to Saratoga Springs after three seasons as an assistant coach with the Bard men's lacrosse team. There, he assisted in recruiting, scouting, and game plan efforts for the Raptors. He developed two players at Bard who were honored with All-Liberty League selections over the three seasons.

Prior to Bard, Godino worked with United Lacrosse from 2013-2015 as a coach and camp counselor, teaching basic skills and strategies to kids in the middle and high school levels. Godino also worked as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Summit High School in New Jersey, and has spent three seasons as a coach with the United States Naval Academy Lacrosse Camp. In his spare time, Godino has also worked as a private lacrosse tutor, working with players to help improve their physical and technical skills.

Godino was a four-year starter and three-year captain at Manhattan College, where he played in the midfield. He tallied 85 career points on 55 goals and 30 assists, and snagged 61 career ground balls. He graduated in May of 2015 with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education. In high school, Godino was a Newark Star Ledger Third Team All-State lacrosse selection at Summit, leading his team to a school record 68-game winning streak and back-to-back New Jersey State Championships.

"During his two years at Bard College, Coach Godino has proven himself to be a tireless worker both on the field as well as the recruiting trail," said Kear. "We are thrilled to have a guy with such high character and energy joining the staff.  Here at Skidmore, we pride ourselves on our positivity and creativity and I think Marcel is going to fit in perfectly to the way we like to do things." "There is no doubt about his leadership ability, earning Captain for three straight years at Division I Manhattan College.  He is the guy who is always doing things the right way, whether or not anyone is looking.  I believe he is going to bring his own brand of lacrosse to the offensive side of the ball this year for us and we are ecstatic to get going with this year's group and see how far we can go together."

Godino, originally from New Jersey, currently resides in Saratoga Springs. His brother, Jules, played lacrosse and was a team captain at the United States Naval Academy.

Incumbent knocked off ballot; Democrat to run as Republican
By Jeff Simms

The Beacon Republican Committee has issued its endorsements for the upcoming City Council elections, while objections knocked three Democratic candidates off the ballot — although they can appeal or gather enough signatures to be included as independents.

All six seats on the council are contested every two years; current members Peggy Ross (Ward 1) and Pam Wetherbee (Ward 3) are not running for re-election.

The Republican-endorsed candidates are Wayne Theiss (Ward 1), a volunteer firefighter who owns an HVAC business; Andrew Gauzza III (Ward 3), a Manhattan College student; Chris Bopp (Ward 4), an accountant, real estate agent and former City Council member; and Amando Downer, a business consultant who is running for an at-large seat.

Message from Adrienne Ricci

To Manhattan College,

Thank you for your acknowledgement and respectful commentary regarding my father, John J. Ricci MD. He was very proud to be an Alumni of Manhattan College and had many memorable life events while attending. He went on to St. Louis University, graduating with and earning a medical degree. He was swiftly usurped by Uncle Sam for WWI and then Korea. He established his practice in Huntington Station, NY, as a beloved GP for 65 years, retiring at age 85.

While at Manhattan, John created color images for his class yearbook, after researching, through patent offices, the color printing process. A first at Manhattan!

He intricately illustrated medical manuals, published by Prof. Acconci, while attending Manhattan. His artistic talents were unsurpassed.

Dr. Ricci was adored by his patients, generations of patients, half of whom he delivered. He was a dedicated and devoted physician, Husband, Father, an ardent award winning artist who was one of the founders of the Huntington Township Art League, multilinguist, a member of the United Flying Octegenarians ( UFO’s) having earned his pilots licence at the age of 75, sailor, boatbuilder, fisherman, sculptor, gourmet chef and all around remarkable man.

He did not go into medicine for the income potential. He genuinely cared for people first. His patients would often pay him with home-grown produce tucked into the back seat of his beloved Corvair. The car, with 4 studded tires, that enabled him to make house calls, regardless of how snowy the roads were. A Cadillac was not his style. His devotion was to his patients, not his income. He gave his all...and everyone knew and appreciated that.

Your college graduated a phenomenal man. You should be proud.

Adrienne C. Ricci

THE BRONX -

After spending their summer in the Bronx, a group of students from the Palestinian territories will be saying goodbye this week to the Big Apple.

Some of the students from Bethlehem University had never traveled before, but for the past 13 weeks they have been at Manhattan College working a summer research program and learning life lessons.

Between their studies, the students took in the sights, sounds and food of the city.

Student Jane Allawi says she was amazed by the academic freedom American students have.

"I saw that there are so many options here, and I love that because back home we don't have a lot of programs, a lot of options for biology students,” she says.

Last summer, two students were in the program.  This year, there were five.

Update today!—ER Frank Morganthaler, patriot, brave man, who suffered massive heart attacks a 5 or 6 weeks ago…coded 7 timesbefore open heart surgery is now sitting in a waiting room in CT. (they live in Hawthorne) waiting a 7 hour surgery on his only daughter, Michelle, who was a pedestrian hit by a car Wednesday  nite … it appears to be touch and go.”

"He and his wife Barbara are just learning to cope with his condition...he is on a walker and fragile.  Please pray for this familly and for the surgeons who are performing surgery on Michelle’s right side.   Thank you.

Please beseech Jesus and Mary on their behalf.”

Bun or bump?
Does the mother contain the foetus or is it a part of her? On the metaphysics of pregnancy, and its ethical implications

*** begin quote ***

An alternative view to the parthood model is the container model, which seems to be the extreme opposite of it, since it claims that the foetus is not a part of the maternal organism, but rather is contained inside the maternal organism. So, according to this container model, the maternal organism is literally a container for the foetus, where the relationship between the maternal organism and the foetus is like that of a niche to a tenant. A niche is something that encloses something else, such that the smaller thing is inside the larger thing, where the smaller thing is classed as the tenant. Think of this model as being like a tenant in a rented house, such that the house is the niche for its occupant. The foetus, as a tenant, inhabits the maternal organism, as a niche. This is a view held by the philosophers Barry Smith and Berit Brogaard in their paper ‘Sixteen Days’ (2003) in The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy. They provide the analogy of the foetus being inside some space in the maternal organism in much the same way as a tub of yogurt is inside a fridge or, as phrased earlier, the way a bun is inside an oven.

An interesting and thoughtful approach to the conundrum of abortion.

I’m a fat old white guy injineer and not a philosopher or doctor of medicine. BUT, one thing I’m sure of is that Gooferment involvement has just made the problem worse. If not, insolvable.
