POSITRACTION: After Manchester Arena Explosion, heroism

Hero Woman Rescues 50 Children After Horrifying Manchester Arena Explosion

*** begin quote ***

After an explosion occurred at Manchester Arena last night, scores of panicked teenagers scattered into the streets. One woman felt the blast from nearby Victoria Station, and stepped in immediately to help. Her actions are now being showered with praise by social media users, who have dubbed her the ‘Angel of Manchester.’

“We ran out. It was literally seconds after the explosion. I got the teens to run with me,” she told local media. The 48-year-old West Dalton native, named Paula Robinson, managed to corral about 50 young victims, and eventually led them to a nearby hotel. In a series of Facebook posts, she shared their ordeal and pleaded with parents to come for their children, even going as far as posting her personal phone number to be contacted for information. It’s unknown whether or not all of the kids have been located and picked up, but Robinson’s fast response and selfless lending of assistance was undoubtedly a comfort to them.

*** end quote ***

I’m sure this was an instinctive response.

A known tactic is to have secondary explosions to kill emergency responders.

But, anytime one heads into danger, that’s heroic in my mind.

Clearly, NOT her children, but someone’s.

Hope I can do that someday.

The impact is that I can NOT post the weekly link there. So, if folks want it in their email, then they have to “subscribe”. If they just want to read it, then it’s always linked off of http://www.jasperjottings.com/.

Sorry. Not my fault.

[JR: I was a Customer too, but not early. Usually after class. Trying to douse the “flames of ignorance”. I think it’s been gone for a long time. So have many of the other watering holes. Alma Mater didn’t like them; nor the “near occasion of sin” that they presented. And drunken Jaspers generated a lot of flack for the PR folks. From what I seen over the years, it’s not a problem going away anytime soon. Maybe when all “drugs” including alcohol are “unregulated”, then the allure of all of them will be wiped away. And, parent can teach there children “responsibility”. Probably not in my lifetime, but I can hope. Besides what will an out of work drug dealer do?]

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY —With Westchester emerging as a biotech and health tech hub, the Westchester County Association is working to encourage women to enter STEM careers. Historically, fewer women than men have chosen careers in STEM fields. The good news is that attitudes are changing, WCA officials said.

Three years ago, the WCA inaugurated the Women in Tech Awards Luncheon to honor the pioneering women in STEM fields who work locally. The Fourth Annual Women in Tech Awards Luncheon June 22 will honor four more outstanding women.

Basic Steps to Online Safety and Security

*** begin quote ***

Follow these six National Cyber Security Alliance recommendations to better protect yourself online and make the Internet more secure for everyone:

• Fortify each online account or device.

Enable the strongest authentication tools available. This might include biometrics, security keys, or unique one-time codes sent to your mobile device. Usernames and passwords are not enough to protect key accounts such as e-mail, banking, and social media.

*** and ***

• When in doubt, throw it out.

Cybercriminals often use links to try to steal your personal information. Even if you know the source, if something looks suspicious, delete it.

*** end quote ***

If I can add a few of my own.

• Get your own domain.

Your email is less of a target than on Yahoo, Hotmail, or any of them. Hackers go for the easy or valuable. If you look like a target, you’ll be probed. I’ve watch hackers try every possible password using automated tools to attack. At the very least, use LASTPASS or equivalent to create very long passwords (i.e., I use 24 character ones generated by LASTPASS to be random.)

• Don’t fall for these “Secret Questions” (i.e., high school mascot).

Treat them just like passwords (i.e., use LASTPASS to generate the answer; then save it somewhere. For example, my mother’s maiden name is umelianshapicaryneodedon, jurymedynosloteneworychb, and iveterialontheryahmatert depending upon which site you visit. Crack that. I dare you.

• Use Chromebooks

Most WINDOWS laptops are overkill for most people. Unless you have a SPECIFIC need for that type of power, use a cheap chromebook for all your web surfing and email. The chromebook is pretty “dumb”. There’s no way for a hacker to embed malware own it because it reloads a fresh copy of the operating system every time you turn it on. It automatically updates the system software as needed. A true thin client. Even I use chromebooks and am planning to make it my ONLY platform in the near future.

FWIW.

In Memory of
John Hyland
January 29, 1928 - June 4, 2017
Obituary

John P. Hyland of Greenwich, CT passed away peacefully the evening of June 4th, 2017, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 89. He died exactly in the manner in which he preferred, simply and quietly, and knowing how very loved he was. John, or Jack, (as he was known to family and friends), was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Following high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the cleanup of World War II. When he arrived home, he graduated from Manhattan College and earned his law degree at Fordham University. Jack was married to Maureen Ann Thompson (1931-2013). Together, they raised six children and were proud of all their accomplishments. Jack had a distinguished career as a senior executive at General Re Insurance for nearly 40 years. He was well respected and derived great satisfaction from his work.

Jack was an avid movie buff, a staunch Republican and a talented teaser. He always enjoyed some good banter with his friends and family. His happiest times were spent with his friends and family summering at his beloved Candlewood Knolls in New Fairfield, CT. He found the community back in 1962 and was delighted that his grandchildren now call it their favorite place on earth. All who knew him will remember him in his familiar resting pose: in his recliner, watching a great old movie with a friend while sipping on a Bailey's. He will be sincerely missed by all those who came to know him and whose lives he touched with his kindness.

Jack is survived by his six children and their spouses (Annmary (Rich), Michael (Ann), Patrice (Herb [1950-2009]), John (Nancy), Maura (Michael) & Peter (Brigg), thirteen grandchildren (Bobby, Mikey, Matthew, Johnny, Emma, Annie, Bissy, Jennifer, Daniel, Geoffrey, Helen, Thompson & Bronwyn) and one great-grandchild (Jackson), as well as his sister Mary, his brother Bill, his sister in laws (Ruby, Ursula, Geri), and his many beloved nieces and nephews.

Jack's recliner is vacant now and his glass is empty but our hearts are full and our memories are sweet. He honored his family in the manner in which he lived his life. We are forever grateful for the lifetime of lessons he taught us and, the love shared with us.

A memorial mass celebrating John's life will be held AT 11AM on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 469 North Street, Greenwich, CT 06830

How/where are you celebrating your birthday and with whom?

“I’m in London with my wife Nina Easton who is chairing the Fortune Most Powerful Women International Summit next week. Our daughter Ellie and I are just tagging along.”

How did you get your start in politics?

“At age 5, I remember watching the Kennedy funeral on our B&W TV set. My parents weren’t political at all. So according to family lore, my mother tried to change the channel--and I stopped her in her tracks. I volunteered with local races on Long Island and after graduating from Manhattan College had the opportunity to work for a candidate running for Congress on Staten Island. The candidate was Guy Molinari and he brought me to Washington with him during the earliest days of the Reagan administration. I was hooked.”

ALLENDALE, NJ — Former FBI Director James Comey's father, a lifelong Republican who once served as a public official in New Jersey, praised his son for his testimony before a Senate committee on Thursday and said it validated his ill feelings toward President Trump.

"He's a stand-up guy, and the other guy (Donald Trump) proved he's a weasel," J. Brien Comey, 86, a former Allendale councilman in Bergen County who watched the entire three-hour testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, told Patch.

John Ryder, political stalwart, dies at 90

Whether it was election day or just primary day, you would find John Ryder standing on the corner near the polling place of West 256th Street and Riverdale Avenue near P.S. 81 Robert Christen speaking to everyone who’d walk by about his candidates. He’d start at 6 a.m., and wouldn’t pack it in until 3.

*** and ***

Ryder died of colon cancer May 17 at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. He was 90.

His family will remember him during a service July 17 at 10 a.m., at Christ Church Riverdale, 5030 Henry Hudson Parkway.

Ben Franklin club president Bruce Feld called Ryder “an unstoppable force” and “the paragon of grassroots political activity,” but he was a private person at heart.

Ryder moved from his College Road home in Fieldston years earlier, Feld said, but would return to his old neighborhood when he was needed, canvassing house-to-house to petition on behalf of the candidates he believed in. It was not an easy feat in an area filled with private homes and spacious yards, so it meant a lot of legwork.

And Ryder didn’t let the fact he was well into his 80s slow him down, either.

He wasn’t just about politics. Ryder donated his time to nonprofits in the community, served as president and director of Riverdale Neighborhood House and treasurer of the Riverdale Presbyterian Church. He later joined Christ Church Riverdale, where was a member of the Vestry, the church’s governing body.

Before becoming a Democrat in the 1970s, Ryder was the president of the West Bronx Young Republican Club, chairman of the Young Republicans of the First Judicial District, and a district leader and state committee manager of the Republican 12th Executive District in the Bronx.

He also was a longtime member of the Riverdale Yacht Club, where he enjoyed playing bridge.

Born in October 1926, Ryder was a lifelong Riverdalian. He attended Horace Mann School and was a graduate of Manhattan College. Ryder served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1945.

He spent his professional career in the advertising industry where he once served as the president of the Advertising Association for Men and Women.

Ryder lost his wife Lorna in 2011.

The two dated in high school, reconnecting many years later when he contacted her to see how she was doing. The pair married in 2005.

Ryder is survived by his sister Elliott Ryder, who lives in Los Angeles.

Dinowitz, who became an assemblyman in 1994, planned to give a eulogy at Ryder’s memorial service.
“He was just a good person, a nice guy,” Dinowitz said. “Never asked for anything. Only gave, gave, gave, and he never really asked for anything.”

Audrey (Jennings) Marino
Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Audrey (Jennings) Marino, of Rockville-Vernon, announce her death on June 7, 2017, at the age of 82.

Audrey will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Patricia and son-in-law, Jonathan Dewald, of Toronto, Ontario; sister Rae Jennings of Dallas, Texas; brother, Dean and sister-in-law, Carol Jennings, of Tolland; sister-in-law, Lois Jennings of Walpole, Massachusetts; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband Pasquale Marino; and brother, Craig Jennings.

A native of the Boston area, Audrey was a lifelong political activist, feminist, cat lover, and Red Sox fan. In her 20s she worked at Northeastern University as a secretary and later as administrative assistant to the Dean of Business, and that is where she met her future husband Pasquale Marino, who at the time of his death was Dean of Engineering at Manhattan College. After they married she remained active in politics and was deeply committed to various progressive causes, including women's equality, reproductive rights, and education reform. Her longstanding interest in politics found apt expression in recent years when she regularly had her comments published online by the New York Times.

Audrey and Pasquale were married for 20 happy years before his sudden death at age 48. After her husband's death, Audrey spent several years living with the family of Dean and Carol Jennings, and helped to raise their two daughters, Andrea and Stacy, with whom she became very close. Late in life, Audrey became part of the community at Florence Mill Apartments. Her family and friends will always remember her open-mindedness, humor, warmth, and compassion.

Funeral service and burial will be private.

ENDNOTE: Gallaher, Peter “peardarban” (MC1965) on "Veritas"

2017-Jun-10

An email from Gallaher, Peter “peardarban” (MC1965):

*** begin quote ***

My wife and I long ago decided to stop supporting the schools we went to long ago. She graduated with honors from hers, that place where Veritas may no longer be found, and I was honored at the time to have avoided jail while going to mine. We stopped when we encountered Thomas More College, a small place just down the road from us. It keeps alive what most everyone else is trying with all their strength to kill, or no longer knows once existed, Western Civilization, now thought of, when thought of at all, as the birthplace of "white privilege", "hetero-normality", monogamy and climate change denial. Now they are joined by Dr. Anthony Esolen, recently left from Providence College, the once and no longer Catholic college in Rhode Island, that small place with a female Catholic governor who thinks killing children in the womb is an inalienable right. I think you might enjoy the article 'A Center for Cultural Renewal ' from The Catholic Thing.

https://www.thecatholicthing.org/2017/05/10/a-center-for-cultural-renewal/

*** end quote ***

While I still support my grammar school and college, I think that the institutions of the Catholic Church have lost their way.

So, I yield my time (aka ENDNOTE) to my fellow Jasper’s rant.
