2017-May-14

The moment a hero transit worker saved two female cop as a suspect attacked them and tried to steal their guns - before his bosses put him under INVESTIGATION for his heroism

Two female Tampa Bay police officers struggled to arrest Charles Kee, 26, at the transit center on April 26
Video of incident shows him punching one of the officers in the face while also trying to grab her gun, police say
Transit supervisor Tim Martin stepped in to help the officers and is set to receive an award from police for his heroism
But his bosses put him under investigation and said he could face disciplinary action because 'there was a stretch of time they didn't hear from him'
The investigation was later dropped and Martin will not face disciplinary action
Kee was arrested and charged with battery on a licensed security guard, trespass after warning, battery on a law enforcement officer, and more

Great story about initiative and courage. And, of course, that no good deed goes unpunished.

Who knows what would have happened if he had not stepped in?

It’s as close to that “saving a life” action than most people get. And, I’m afraid to say that others might not get involved or, even worse, be on the “wrong side”.

Nice to see that the folks in that particular “ivory tower” got the heads screwed on straight and didn’t punish the fellow.

Might even be a “training opportunity” to other officers.

Glad it all worked out and everyone go to home. Hope I can have that kind of courage.

JOBIT: Blasland, Warren Vincent Jr. [MC1966 RIP] on 2017-05May-11

 2017-May-16

http://obits.syracuse.com/obituaries/syracuse/obituary.aspx?n=warren-vincent-blasland&pid=185396719&fhid=10943

Warren Vincent Blasland, Jr.

Warren Vincent Blasland, Jr., 72, of Wellington, Florida, passed away Thursday, May 11 surrounded by his loved ones.

Born on January 16, 1945, in New York City, Warren moved to Liverpool, New York at the age of two. He grew up in a devout Catholic home, the oldest of six boys, each became an altar boy at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Warren was a student at Liverpool High School where he excelled as a Varsity baseball pitcher. After graduation, Warren continued his studies at Manhattan College where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and later attended Syracuse University, receiving his Master of Science Degree in Sanitary Engineering.

Shortly thereafter, he began a noteworthy career at O'Brien and Gere where he quickly rose to become a Senior Vice President. Warren then pursued and achieved his aspiration of beginning his own engineering company with the successful establishment of Blasland, Bouck & Lee. He served as President, CEO and Chairman of the Board, eventually opening up sixteen branches nationwide.

In the 1990s, Warren relocated to Boca Raton, where he launched a new engineering and financial consulting company, Blasland Consulting Services. His many talents, shrewd business acumen, collaborative spirit, and unrivaled thirst for challenges led him to initiate a myriad of successful business ventures across a variety of fields. He created businesses ranging from restaurants, to boat chartering, to jet leasing, to horse racing and breeding, to water remediation, and many others. Additionally, several patents bear Warren’s name. He positively affected innumerable families around the country, as he created nearly 1,000 jobs through his enterprises.

Although he was deeply committed to his many professions, Warren had an unparalleled sense of adventure and one of his greatest achievements was living life to the fullest. He was happiest when horseback riding through the Adirondack woods with dear friends, scuba-diving with sharks, exploring the world, unraveling his famous original stories on a whim to his delighted children, and spending time at the Fourth Lake "red camp" with his beloved family.

Warren was predeceased by his parents, Warren Vincent Sr. and Mary Claire (McCarthy) Blasland. He will be truly missed but always remembered by his children, Warren III (Purisima), David, and Brian (Jill); his daughter, Ashley Blasland; his grandchildren, Roderick, Brandy Marie, Christopher, Michael, Brian and Ava Blasland. He is also survived by his former wife, Angela Blasland; five brothers, Donald (Susan), Richard (Greer), Robert (Julie), James (Wendy), and Edward (Betsy) as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 20th, 9:15 a.m. at FARONE & SON Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at Assumption Church, 812 N. Salina Street, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 19th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, 1500 Park Street, Syracuse. A rosary to be prayed at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Assumption Church Food Pantry, 808 N. Salina Street, Syracuse NY 13208. The man thought he had loss his vision due to a genetic disorder.
By Michael Woyton (Patch Staff) - May 17, 2017 1:37 pm ET

Growing up in Westchester, Evans said he believed his loss of sight at a young age was due to a genetic disorder. However, in 2014, while a student at Manhattan, he learned his blindness was actually the result of a brain tumor.

Faced with a difficult surgery ahead, Evans remained in school, crediting the College’s Specialized Resource Center and his professors and friends for their support and flexibility while he dealt with a year’s worth of medical visits and tests.

A year later, Evans had published another collection of his poetry and prose, and earned Dean’s List honors, which he has received every semester of his college tenure.

Police Service Area 7 sergeant Jordan Castro debuts novel, ‘Smoke and Mirrors: Police Dreams’
By Robert Wirsing

*** begin quote ***

A local police sergeant’s novel reveals the challenges police officers face protecting and serving their communities.

As America was entrenched in a heated debate over police matters in the U.S., active Police Service Area 7 sergeant Jordan Castro patrolled by day and wrote by night.

Inspired by the writings of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Castro, a Riverdale native and son of Cuban immigrants, penned something much deeper than a typical police thriller.

In his debut novel, ‘Smoke and Mirrors: Police Dreams,’ the 37-year-old Manhattan College alum reflects upon modern American society and the profession of policing during the ‘Police Era,’ one of the most tumultuous periods in recent history.

This is the miraculous moment a group of hero bystanders caught a two-year-old toddler who fell from a balcony after they spotted her dangling from the edge.

Elif Cakmak had been playing unsupervised in her family's apartment in Turkey's Sanliurfa Province when she climbed on to the rails.

The little girl lost her balance and fell over the edge forcing her to perilously hang on or fall to the ground.

As any reader knows, I love the “save a life” story.

Now the parents or guardians may have been negligent — but children are quick and squirmy — as anyone who’s watched them knows — but it’s great that these gents could make a “nice catch”!
