A set of identical twins kept each other alive by CUDDLING in the womb. Hayley Lampshire, 27, from Kidlington, Oxfordshire, discovered she was carrying Monoamniotic-Monochorionic twins at her 12 week scan which meant they shared the same placenta and amniotic sac. This type of pregnancy, which occurs in less than one per cent of all twin pregnancies, is extremely rare and the boys were given just a 50 per cent chance of survival.
Hayley Lampshire, 27, from Kidlington, Oxfordshire, discovered her twins were suffering from a rare condition meaning they shared one amniotic sac, instead of having one each.
That mean that if the babies moved around in the womb doctors warned their umbilical cords could become tangled, starving them, or even strangling each other.
The only way they would survive the pregnancy was if they both stayed still.
But she was amazed when she went for a scan – and saw her two boys cuddling each other – and even appeared to be holding hands.

What an entrancing story. Life is so precious.
Was it some instinctive response to the conditions or an Angel? I have no idea.
But it is a modern day miracle to to beat the odds. (Slot machines have taught me a lot about odds.)

John F. (Captain Jack) McMahon, 90, of Cortlandt Manor, died peacefully on Thursday, February 2, 2017. His wife, Sharon (Rohan) McMahon, his devoted partner of 39 years and caretaker to the end, is grateful to have had the opportunity to say goodbye.
Jack and his twin brother, Joseph, were born August 12, 1926 in Yonkers, NY to John F. and Loretta (Engel) McMahon. They grew up in Yonkers with their sister Rita. He graduated from Gorton HS and attended Manhattan College. As a young boy, Jack was a great swimmer and won several competitions in Yonkers and Carmel, NY. He had fond memories of summers at his family's bungalow in Carmel.
Following his formal education, Jack served in Army Air Corps during the last year of World War 2 and was honorably discharged. He was appointed to the Yonkers Police Department on August 1, 1947. He became a highly decorated officer throughout his 42 years on the force before retiring on September 30, 1989, shortly after his promotion to Deputy Chief. He became affectionately known throughout not only the department, but the City of Yonkers, as "Captain Jack".
Captain Jack is remembered in his career and personal life as the type of individual who most people would hope to have the opportunity to work for and know. He was a big man, but always spoke with a soft, controlled voice.
Jack was a dedicated husband and gentle father who was immensely proud of his entire family. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Sharon. He is also survived by his cherished daughters Doreen Chiulli, Kathleen Knuth and Tara Reuter. Jack is preceded in death by his three children: Dennis, John, and Colleen, as well as his twin brother, Joseph, and his sister, Rita. Jack leaves behind six grandsons: Craig and Jeffrey Chiulli, Thomas and Michael Knuth, and Jack and Dylan Reuter. Jack will also be remembered by his eleven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jack's family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating his life at The Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart on 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers on Monday, February 6th with visitation starting at 11 am and a Memorial Mass at 11:30 am. Interment will be held privately.

John James (Jay) O'Reilly, 85, of Hollywood, FL passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 17, 2017. Born July 25, 1931 in Teaneck, NJ to the late John and Kathleen O'Reilly, he was the eldest of 6 children. Jay graduated from Teaneck High School in 1948 and went on to receive a BS in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College, NY after serving 2 years in the United States Army. He retired from the Port Authority of NY & NJ after 33 years of service. He was married to the late Lorraine Thierer O'Reilly in 1957. Together they built a home in Hilton Park, Atlantic Highlands, NJ. After Lorraine's passing in September 1972, Jay singularly raised 5 children between the ages of 7 and 14. He remarried again in 1998 to Anne Johnson and relocated to Hollywood, FL in 2008.
He is predeceased by his brother Michael O'Reilly, and sister Maureen Hoare, and is survived by his sisters Lenore O'Reilly, Anne Russell, and his brother Francis O'Reilly. Also surviving are his wife, AJ O'Reilly, his daughters Elizabeth, Jeanette and Michelle, his son James and wife Lisa, son Robert and wife Kathi, stepdaughter Lisa and husband Rob Mazzola, stepson Craig Johnson and wife Stephanie, stepdaughter Nina and husband Alex Rothacker, and 7 grandchildren: Collin and Quinn O'Reilly both actively serving in the United States Marines, Rachel and Claire O'Reilly, Grace Johnson, & Annika and Luca Rothacker.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Highlands, NJ where he served for many years. Jay loved crossword puzzles, working with his hands, telling stories of old and spending time with his family. He deeply loved his family and will be greatly missed by them all.
A memorial service honoring the life of Jay O'Reilly will be held Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH), 151 Navesink Ave., Highlands, NJ 07732, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to OLPH St. Vincent De Paul Society.

FISHKILL - Thomas J. Lee, Jr., 94, an area resident since 1994, died on February 2, 2017 at Cortlandt Healthcare. He previously lived in Yorktown Heights.
Born in Lynn, MA on August 4, 1922, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Anna (Breault) Lee, Sr. Tom attended Chaminade High School and then graduated from LaSalle Military Academy. He attended Manhattan College before proudly serving as a pilot in the US Navy during WWII.
He had been employed as a sales manager for 44 years until his retirement from NY Trap Rock Corp and Martin Marrietta, both in Westchester, NY.
Tom was an avid golfer, tennis player, bicyclist, and artist, who particularly enjoyed painting. Most of all, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.
On December 28, 1947 in Baldwin, NY Tom married Jane M. (Ryan) Lee. His wife of 69 years survives at home. He is also survived by his children, Janeanne O'Brien, Thomas Lee and his wife Tracy, Richard Lee, Nancy Ward, Pamela Lee-Jackson, Carol Lee-O'Connor and her husband Tom, James Lee and his wife Laurie and Cynthia Lee and her life partner Michael Mitnik; his grandchildren, Alyson Smith, David O'Brien, Isaac Lee, Danielle Ward, Brendan Jackson, Melinda Jackson, Jacob Lee, Dustin Ward, Rachel Lee, Michael Muir, Abram Lee, T.J. Lee, Matthew Lee, and Kimberlee O'Connor; and his 7 great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5-8 pm at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday at 10 am at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, 106 Jackson Street, Fishkill followed by burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne with military honors.

I ask for your prayers for a good friend and relative of mine. Manny is dealing with an extreme health issue that requires fairly regular transfusions due to his constant passing of blood. The MDs have not been able to locate the problem but continue to test and probe. I spoke with him recently and he is in good spirits. His Daughter tells me that if I want to see him, I should visit soon. Please pray that the MDs get control of the problem. His Wife has had some extensive health issues but is doing well now and we thank God for her strength and support as well as that of their Son and Daughter.

John Henry Browne, age 73, died on Sunday, February 5th, after an intense battle with lymphoma.
A native of the Bronx, John was born on November 14, 1943 and lived his entire life in New York City. As a young man he attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine, and was a graduate of Manhattan College.
John was deeply committed to the City, its teachers, and its students. He began his career at a junior high school in the South Bronx before moving to the High School of Art and Design where he taught English for over 28 years. He also worked as an adjunct professor at LaGuardia Community College. After 32 years of public school teaching, he retired in 1999.
His second career began shortly thereafter when he joined the Teaching of English program at Teachers College, Columbia University. As a teacher educator, John mentored aspiring teachers in an office adorned with Shakespearean keepsakes. He modeled the timeless art of teaching literature and reading and had the uncommon ability to focus completely on the needs of the person before him. He is remembered for his quick wit, generosity of spirit, tall stature, and booming jovial voice. By his own estimation, the number of students he taught over nearly half a century could fill Yankee Stadium.
John's devotion to his family was bottomless. Although he received numerous professional awards and accolades they don't hold light to his immense devotion and love as an ever-present son, son-in-law, caring father, and adoring grandfather. He is survived by his two daughters, Alison Browne Beckman and Gillian Browne, their mother Lucille Browne, sons-in-law Craig Beckman and Brian Colavito, granddaughters Lilah Rose and Kaela Brynn, beloved partner of the last eight years Jonna Semeiks, and thousands of loving students, colleagues, and friends.
A wake will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 4pm to 8pm at Riverdale on The Hudson Funeral Home, and a mass will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 10:30am at Saint John the Divine in Manhattan. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to the TCFund and designated to financial aid in memory of John Browne, which will support scholarships for students in need.
Out, out, brief candle! You will be forever deeply missed.

John Edward Timotheus FitzGibbons, known as "Jack" to family and friends, of East 7th Street in Oswego, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Tuesday, with loved ones by his side.
Jack lived a very rich and fulfilling life. He was born on May 6, 1924 in Oswego, and was the eldest of three children raised by George and Ellen FitzGibbons. His beloved sisters, Julie Sullivan and Mary Mimi Conway, both preceded him in death.
Jack graduated from St. Paul's Academy and Oswego High School before enlisting in WWII. As a member of the armed forces serving in the field artillery, he helped to liberate Europe. Upon his return from war, Jack attended Manhattan College, graduating as a proud Jasper in 1951. After graduation, Jack returned to Oswego to work alongside his father at FitzGibbons Real Estate. In 1953, Jack found that "happiness lies right under your eyes, back in your own backyard" when he married fellow Oswegonian Joan Galvin. They shared 56 happy years of marriage prior to Joan's death in 2009. Together, with Joan's support and commitment to excellence, they raised and educated seven children who are their ardent admirers.
Jack loved and served Oswego in many ways. He was a two-term Mayor of Oswego from 1976-1980 and served as Executive Director of the Port of Oswego Authority for more than a decade. He was also a long-time proprietor of FitzGibbons Insurance and Real Estate, the family business, now managed by his son.
Jack was instrumental in establishing Oswego's first public housing development, Hamilton Homes and aided in the city's acquisition of the Naval Militia (McCrobie) Building. He secured The Nash, the living WWII museum ship that sits in the Harbor, as well as oversaw the restoration of Oswego City Hall. He also initiated planning for the Wright's Landing Development.
He was also appointed a Charter Commission which successfully revised and modernized the Oswego City Charter, changing the term of Mayor from 2 to 4 years, strengthening the powers of the Mayor and creating a new Department of Personnel.
Jack served on many committees and boards including the County Solid Waste Board, Oswego County Board of Realtors, Central New York Girl Scouts, Catholic Charities, and the Oswego County, to name a few.
He held long-time memberships in the Oswego Elks, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, and was an honorary member of the Oswego Rotary.
Jack is survived by his seven children, Jean (Rick Sabatini), John (Tara Seaman), Joan (Chris Dain), Ellen (Joe McCloskey), Jerome (Jennifer Dehm), Mary (Kevin Stack), and Kathleen (Kevin Hunt). He is loved by thirteen grandchildren: Ben, Jean, George, Mary Margaret, Sean, Mary, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Margaret, James, Thomas, Padraig, and Siobhan; and one great grandchild, Lillian. His extended family includes his in-laws, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Jack Fitzgibbons is revered and loved not only for public service, but being a family man in a sense that few can claim. He had both the heart of a lion, and the soul of a lamb. He was a faithful husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. The lilt of Irish laughter, a favorite tune, and a poet's wit were always readily shared. He was a politician and civil servant who served with integrity and character. His legacy will long out-live him. His adoring family carries forward his name and memory.
A Celebration of Life and Mass will take place at 10:30am Saturday, February 11th, at St. Paul's Church in Oswego. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday, February 10th, from 4 to 8pm at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 East Second Street in Oswego.
The family requests donations to be sent to the St. Luke John Foster Burden Foundation, 299 E. River Road, Oswego NY 13126.

GREEN - Mr. Michael F. Giacomantonio, a resident of Lake Tranquility in Green, died at age 84 on Feb. 5, 2017.
Born in Jersey City, Michael, graduated from Manhattan College and attended Fairleigh Dickinson for his MBA while serving in the Naval Reserve.
Michael was a retired salesman. With a twinkle in his eye, he could sell snow to an Eskimo and ants at a picnic. He had the voice of an angel and was an active member of the choir at the Good Shepherd R.C. Church in Andover as well as serving as an usher there for many years. Michael was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was loved and respected by all who knew him because he was a joy to be around.
Michael was known for making people laugh, he was never without a witty anecdote or a kind word. He had a gift with children and animals. Both were drawn to him because of his kind nature. Some of his favorite hobbies were gardening, whittling and training his beloved dogs.
Mike, Mikey, Uncle Mike, Miguel, Michael played different roles to different people and he was magnanimous to all. He touched so many lives and will be missed dearly by all who knew him. Michael is survived by his loving and adorable wife, Geraldine Giacomantonio; son, Paul Giacomantonio; daughters, Laura Giacomantonio and Karen Giacomantonio-Corrigan. Additionally, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Former resident of Oak Harbor Albert T. Fragola passed away Dec. 30. He was living in Paros, Greece. He was born Dec. 31, 1942, in Pelham, N.Y., to Albert and Dora Fragola.
He attended Rutgers-the State University, N.J.; Manhattan College, N.Y., Hunter College, N.Y.; Texas Christian University, Texas-MLA; and Cambridge University with a degree in orthodox Christian history.
Al served 34 years in the Armed Forces: six years in the Marine Corp, three years active and three years reserve.
He served 28 years in the Army. Al proudly served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. He was the recipient of The Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, Air Medal and other awards.
Al attended Command and General Staff College in 1983 — graduating with honors — and the U.S. Naval War College in 1995. He retired August 31, 1995, from the 124th Arcom, Fort Lawton, Wash.
Al was an avid boater, cruising the waters of the Great Lakes and the Pacific Northwest. He served as commodore of the Oak Harbor Yacht Club in 2000.
He formed the Vespa Club del Mediterraneo while living in Greece, hosting several Scooter Rallies in Greece, Italy, Spain and France. Participants came from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia.
Al was very active in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He loved God, his family and living in the Greek Islands.
Al is survived by his beloved wife Ardy, his daughters Kirsten Poteet (Bill ) and Deidre Fragola, step-son Michael Waldon, sister Geraldine O’Hara (John), four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Al is buried on his beloved Greek Island of Paros.

NEW CANAAN — After many years working at universities Robert Kinnally had ascended to what was arguably the premier position in college admissions in 2000. It was at that point that he decided to made a profoundly life-altering decision.

Prior to receiving “the call,” as he refers to it, Kinnally considered himself a religious person. He was raised Roman Catholic in Yonkers, N.Y. and went to Mass regularly as a child. In college, he became enraptured by literature, consuming novels and poetry fiendishly at Manhattan College and continuing his studies in literature at NYU. He wrote his master's thesis about the baptismal imagery of water in the work of Henry James’ “The Ambassadors.”

He loved his job, but still, the possibility of a life in church pulled at him.
“You can’t run from it. I couldn’t run from it,” Kinnally said.
Kinnally began seeing a spiritual director, a Dominican Priest, with whom he shared his dreams of joining the priesthood and worked toward his goal. In 2004, Kinnally was ordained.

Church of Spies Reads Like a Thriller

“Church of Spies” will inspire many Catholics. It brings to life the heroic priests and ordinary faithful who did not sit on their hands, and who shed their own blood in the Pope’s high-stakes espionage to stop the Third Reich.
This book will also interest students of the Holocaust. It provides a new context for evaluating Pope Pius XII, who opted for quiet clandestine operations instead of loud public speeches. Although not uncritical of Pius – Riebling writes that “he should have spoken out” – the book shows the German resistance itself begged the Pope not to do or say anything publicly that would cause retribution against Catholics in Germany who were concurrently planning assassinations and coups against the Third Reich.
Written with the attention to detail that one finds in Rick Atkinson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning World War II books, Church of Spies reads like a thriller. But the nearly 100 pages of source citations remind us that what happened here is true. And savoring that truth makes reading “Church of Spies” all the more compelling.
