Bone Marrow

Who needs it? People with leukemias and lymphomas, bone marrow diseases, and immune system disorders like SCID may need a bone marrow transplant. They can’t just use any bone marrow, either: the donor’s tissue type has to match the recipient’s. Most patients who need a transplant can’t find a family member whose tissue type is a close enough match to allow them to donate. That’s why registries are so important—maybe you are someone’s match.

Who can donate? Guidelines for who can donate bone marrow are similar to those for donating blood. In addition, you have to be a good tissue match for the person who needs bone marrow. People are most likely to match with someone else from their racial or ethnic background, so registries especially need people whose heritage is African, Latino, Native American, Asian, or mixed race. Most doctors will request a donor who is under 45 years old, since younger people’s cells make for more successful transplants.

How to donate: Sign up for the National Marrow Donor Program. As part of the registration process, you will swab your cheek and send the swab for testing. This is how they know what tissue type you are. Once you are on the registry, there’s about a 1 in 500 chance that you will end up being somebody’s marrow donor.

There are two ways you might be asked to donate. The older method is a surgery where you get a giant needle in your hip. It’s great for medical TV, but not very common anymore. These days it’s more likely that you will get five daily injections of a medication called filgrastim that causes your bone marrow to release stem cells into your blood. When you donate, a machine will spend several hours filtering those cells out of your blood. In the meantime you can watch movies and chat with friends. If you’ve been put off of donating bone marrow because you were afraid it was a huge, painful needle, don’t be.

What better way to celebrate the Christmas season?

Helping your fellow human being.

Will it hurt? Maybe. But imagine how it would be to be on the other side of it. Needing but not having a donor.

Wish I was under 45.

Maybe because Our Girl Frau Reinke passed away from an unknown blood disease makes this more impact with me.

p.s., I’m a platelet and organ donor. (Platelet donations is a two hour process where, I swear, they remove them from your butt via a handy vein. I know it comes from one’s butt because that’s the only part of me that hurts. And, no, I am NOT supine on my wallet, funny people!)

Give life.

JEMAIL: Delaney, Gerard M. (MC1975) quotes Luke

2016-Dec-25

FROM: Delaney, Gerard M. (MC1975)

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son.* She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

But now, 43 years later, Manhattan can boast of being the best once again. Not for anything they did on the basketball court or soccer pitch, but something that can be considered vastly more important than a simple game. Last week Manhattan College was named by the NCAA as the national leaders in community service for volunteer work performed by Jaspers’ student-athletes and the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for several

2016-Dec-29

Good Afternoon All,

Some prayers of Thanksgiving will not be remiss and some new prayer requests to share.

Al Hansen, a good friend of mine and a member of our Retreat Team is recovering very successfully from extensive Quadruple Heart Surgery and I am happy to say is doing very well. Please keep Al, his Wife Claire and their Family in your prayers as Al continues to heal

I have just heard from Bob Mattis and he tells me his dear friend Sue had her Surgery and the MDs have removed her Cancer but Sue us not out of the woods yet as she now goes into treatment mode. Please keep the volume up for Sue and her Family.

My Niece Kerry's friend and colleague, Jenn, who has been in our prayers as she fought her Leukemia, has told us she is Leukemia free which is incredible. She is so grateful for your prayers and kind thoughts. Her Children are celebrating the Miracle of Christmas in a big way.

Erry, another friend of my Niece Kerry, who was suffering with a brain tumor is now doing much better after necessary surgery. Please keep the prayers coming.

Please raise the volume a bit for Noreen Mattis. Noreen took a fall on Christmas Eve and did some damage to her knee. We pray that her injuries are not as serious as they could be.

I ask for your prayers for my dearest Friend and High School Classmate, Bob (my Brother in a very real sense) whom we actually lost for about 20 seconds last evening. He is in Stonybrook Hospital and at this moment, is receiving a Pacemaker. We pray for Bob and his Family and that the Surgery resolve his dangerous afib reactions.

Remember please in your prayers, our Military Men and Women serving so far from home so that we may be safe. Our thanks, love and prayers go out to them and their Families.

Please keep our Law Enforcement and First Responders in your prayers. Their lives too, are on the line every day.

We have on our plate, some several requests that are each important. Thank you greatly for your love and Commitment.

Thank you. God Bless.

ENDNOTE: She 'Begged' The Courts; now she's dead

She 'Begged' The Courts: But No One Saved N.J. Mom Before Husband Killed Her, Friends Say
By Tom Davis (Patch Staff) - December 20, 2016 4:06 pm

*** begin quote ***

Tara O’Shea-Watson begged everybody — especially the courts — for help, to let her move out of state and get away from her abusive husband, friends said.

But they shared children. Even as Jeremiah Monell haunted her, she had to stay in her New Jersey home.

As of Tuesday, her children were safe. Tara was dead. And her estranged husband remained on the loose, the target of a nationwide search.

*** and ***

Other friends told Action News that the family lived a life full of terror. "You don't know how many times she came to my house beat up," the victim's friend Penny Morey told the station.

She was a battered mother, they told 6abc, and she and her two children were constantly fleeing from her abusive husband.

*** end quote ***

Here’s a CLASSIC example of the worthlessness of restraining orders and the futility of seeking protection from the Gooferment at any level.

I rant on this often.

Orders Of Protection should come with an AUTOMATIC concealed carry permit, a loaner from the Sheriff, and some range time with a qualified instructor. I’d also have the abuser arrested, brought before a Judge, and instructed that he was now officially a “target” who’s job was to never get with in effective shooting distance of his victim.

Governor Christie should do something to reform Family Court and Pepuls Republic of Nu Jerzee’s draconian gun laws.

Argh!
