Historic Firsts and Achievements of Election Day 2016
by McKinley Corbley - Nov 9, 20162

For starters, 52-year-old Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto became the nation’s first Latina Senator after beating Representative Joe Heck. A granddaughter of a Mexican immigrant and a former Nevada attorney general, Catherine will replace Democratic minority leader Senator Harry Reid.

Meanwhile in California, State Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris was elected as the state’s first freshman Senator in 24 years. Harris is the first black politician to represent California, the second black woman ever to join the Senate, and the first woman ever elected as California attorney general. The Democratic daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants will be replacing the retiring Democrat Barbara Boxer.

48 year-old Tammy Duckworth, a congresswoman from Illinois and the first disabled woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, won the race for US Senate. An Iraq War veteran, Duckworth served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot and suffered severe combat wounds, losing both of her legs.  She defeated incumbent Republican Senator Mark Kirk.

Ilhan Omar became the nation’s first Somali-American legislator after she won a House seat in Minnesota. The 34-year-old succeeded with 80% of the vote, making her an important representative of the largest Somali immigrant population in America.

Finally, Kate Brown was elected as the nation’s first openly LGBT governor in Oregon. Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey came out as gay in 2004, but he had already been elected – Brown, however, has made history as an outed bisexual woman.

For all the yelling and whining about racist, bigoted, and a whole load of other epithets, it seems like the “Country” has moved along.

Argh!

Will anyone in the media or politics admit this modest progress?

The US-Ireland Alliance selected the 12 members of the 2018 Class of George J. Mitchell Scholars following interviews held Washington, D.C.

Members of the class include a military veteran; a young man working for the City of Flint; a young woman working to combat food insecurity in Kansas; a quarterback for an NCAA Division 1 football team; a future doctor who seeks to provide quality healthcare services to transgender people; and a future economist who serves as a research assistant in the White House Office the National Drug Control Policy.

The scholarship program was created nearly 20 years ago by Trina Vargo, founder of the US-Ireland Alliance.  This year, the nationwide competition attracted 323 applicants (up 14% from the previous year) for the 12 scholarships named in honor of the former Maine Senator’s contributions to the Northern Ireland peace process.  Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic distinction, leadership and service and spend a year of post-graduate study at institutions of higher learning in Ireland.

Vietnam vet gets long-awaited medals
James Procopio receives medals in ceremony at congressman’s office

When it came time for James Procopio to graduate from Manhattan College in 1964, he had three options: join the military, get married or move to Canada. He picked the first of the three, choosing to enlist in the U.S. Air Force right out of school.

The 74-year-old man served and was honorably discharged, but he never received his awards, medals or ribbons.

He was due an Air Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

“I explained that I wasn’t sure what happened to (the awards),” said Procopio, who was born and raised in Staten Island, N.Y.

He was able to get the awards after he made a call to the office of U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, R-Gainesville, in May. Procopio received them in a ceremony at Collins’ office on Monday morning.

*** and ***

Procopio’s daughter who lives in Orlando, Fla., Kerry McGavin, her husband Jon McGavin and their three boys Jackson, 13, Collin, 11, and Hudson, 8, were all there to support him, as well as Procopio’s son Drew Procopio. Procopio’s other son, Scott Procopio, wasn’t able to attend the medal-giving.

Col. Jim Martin, a longtime friend of Procopio’s, also came.

During the Vietnam War, Procopio flew planes from his base in Charleston, S.C., to wherever the soldiers were at the time, a 20,000-mile round trip that he took two or three times a month.

“Someone was looking out for me (out there),” Procopio said. He would get a 24-hour notification that he would be taking an “eastbound trip,” which was Air Force lingo for Vietnam. He would fly from Charleston to Alaska to Japan and then to Vietnam, usually. Sometimes they would have to pick up troops or goods in various places in the U.S. before heading off.

He would bring troops what they needed, including flying a planeload full of toilet paper once, he said. When he would bring the goods, he was often called a garbage hauler.

More solemnly, Procopio said he also flew the dead and wounded back.

“They didn’t dare call us garbage haulers, then,” Procopio said through a few tears. The soldiers he carried back home were “the real heroes,” he said.

Palettes of four of five coffins, which were usually six deep, were loaded onto his planes by forklifts.

“It freaked me out … it was disrespectful,” Procopio said.

*** and ***

Since then, however, Procopio worked as a security officer on a cruise ship and was able to take his wife to 103 countries.

“You made up for it,” Patty Procopio said to her husband.

Structural engineer Vincent J. DeSimone—an innovator with an outsize personality known for his ability to creatively support his architect-clients as they curved, twisted and stretched their building envelopes—died on Nov. 16, just two weeks shy of his 79th birthday. The cause was cancer.

“He was a very knowledgeable, smart, competent professional and an outrageously funny guy,” says Richard L. Tomasetti, who worked with DeSimone in the late 1960s. “We just couldn’t wait to see what he would say next,” adds Tomasetti, consultant and founding principal of structural engineer Thornton Tomasetti.

*** and ***

DeSimone received an engineering degree from Manhattan College in 1959 and an honorary doctorate from the school in 2009. He was a licensed engineer in 22 states and Puerto Rico. At his death, he was chairman and senior principal in charge of design for DeSimone Consulting Engineers, a firm he founded in 1969 in New York City.

His son, Stephen V. DeSimone, president and CEO since 2002, will take over as chairman. “For Vince, it wasn’t about accolades. It was about relationships and mentoring,” says Stephen, 50. “Younger architects and developers were his kindred spirits,” he adds.

The son describes his father as being without pretension. “He was a great partner and a better father.”

Good Morning Gerry,

We're so very sorry to hear about your son. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and your family. I've shared your email with Phil Colon '62, who runs a very large alumni prayer email chain. I have no doubt Phil will share message to this wonderful group of Jaspers to 'turn the volume up' for Patrick.

Regarding the Go Fund Me page, I would encourage you or your son-in-law to post the information on the Alumni Facebook wall, and/or the College's Facebook wall, so members of the College community are aware. Our offices have a policy that prohibits posting about fundraising efforts, but alumni and other members of the community are welcomed and encouraged to do so.

Again, I am so sorry to hear this news.

All my best,
Ainsley

Hello Ainsley,

I'm Gerry Clarke a graduate EE from the class of 1958. My classmate Bob Driscoll from '58 forwarded me your email address and hence this message.

Approximately 14 months ago, my then 43 year old bachelor son, Patrick (never married) was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. From that day to the present he has been through radiation months of chemo and numerous MRIs to get status of the tumor. During the same time he has been to numerous hospitals and cancer centers including Duke University Cancer Center, the National Institute of Health Cancer clinic and the INOVA Fairfax Cancer Center in Fairfax VA. His most recent MRI in October from NIH showed the tumor has progressed and he has reached the "end stage". He is now under hospice care coupled with additional care givers providing near round the clock care.

He has an excellent support group from his immediate family and his remarkable loyal cadre of friends.

My son-in-law took it upon himself to connect on the internet with Caring Bridge which is a social network and he set up a post directly sited to Patrick’s needs. There is a link he posted which provides family and extended family and friends an opportunity to assist with prayers and if at all possible financial assistance. Again this "go-fund-me" link was and is a total surprise to Pat's parents : Barbara and Me.

Below is the link. Bob Driscoll said you may wish to propagate the link to the Manhattan Alumni and other networks at Manhattan.

Here is the link to (Uncle) Pat's Go Fund Me account. Please share with whomever you'd like:

As you've probably heard by now, Pat passed away on Monday, November 21 after his battle with brain cancer. While it was a long and difficult struggle over the past 14 months, he ultimately went peacefully and is suffering no more.

Particularly on this Thanksgiving Day, I want to once again thank everyone who has donated to this campaign. In just two weeks we've raised $7,650 from 61 people, which is over 75% of the way to our $10,000 goal. This outpouring of generosity has been a huge help to the Clarke family, and I can assure you that the funds are being put to good use.

The costs for Pat's hospice care and now his funeral services have been real and significant, and I am still hopeful that we can meet our fundraising goal to help ease the burden on Barbara and Gerry during this incredibly difficult time. In that spirit, I will leave this site open for further donations until midnight Sunday. If you have not yet donated, or even if you have and would like to give a bit more, I invite you to do so and to share this site with others.

Let's let Barbara and Gerry know that we stand with them in their grief, and are here to support them in their hour of need.

Also, in case you haven't heard, memorial services will be held for Pat on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Details are available at the following link:

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Reinke, F. John (MC1968)

2016-Nov-22

Good Morning All,

I ask for your prayers for John as he will be going in for surgery this week to remove a Colon Polyp too large to remove lapriscopically. In speaking with John he said he was O'K with my sharing his thoughts on the importance of Colonoscopies. John's Maternal Grandmother died of Colon Cancer and his Mom had a near miss with her Polyp being in the same place as John's. Consequently, John takes his Colonoscopies very seriously. As John says " it stops a silent killer cold." Please keep John in your prayers as we pray for complete success with the operation with no repercussions or ill effects. I will keep you posted after the surgery. Thank you John for sharing. Thank you all for your prayers. God Bless.

[JR: Thanks Phil and all. As you can guess, I came through with relatively little trouble. It only hurts when I laugh or bend. Colon cancer is that silent killer. It killed Katie Couric’s young husband. In my case, it’s genetic. One doc called me “a polyp farm” after taking out 15 two years ago. It’s sad because a very simple disgusting procedure called a colonoscopy can detect, harvest, and eliminate them before they become cancerous. And they all do eventually. Being the typical fat old white guy injineer, I do my colonoscopies without the anesthetic so I can kibitz. It’s watching a TV as the doc steers through a bunch of twisty tunnels that look like the inside of a worm. When he spots a polyp, the doc lassos it and strangles it. Sometimes he has to snip and burn. I find it fascinating. Or you can elect to wimp out and sleep through the whole thing. In my case, it was like a golf ball tucked in a deep rough so they had to get it with laparoscopicly. I tell this story so that you can do it too. It’s really no big deal. And it can save your life. Catholics, Cash, Corruption, and Collapse

*** begin quote ***

All this is so well known that I can turn only to one dimension that is escaped wider notice.

Catholics, Cash, And Corruption

That dimension is the unique role that the Catholic Church in America has played in fulfilling Obama’s destructive dream.

Perhaps unwittingly, certainly witlessly, America’s Catholic bishops have paved the way for this destruction.
Long ago, Obama’s first grant for “community organizing” came from the Catholic Archbishop of Chicago. Ever since the Catholic bishops of the United States have cheered on this strategy of infiltration and inundation. They embraced the welfare state of FDR and LBJ and gave it their invaluable and coveted imprimatur.  In return, they were rewarded with untold billions of taxpayer funding for their nonprofits, what had once been truly independent Catholic charities, schools, and hospitals.

In fact, these once-honorable institutions have become just another gaggle of NGO’s – non-government organizations competing for federal money.

And they earn every penny, in subservience and silence.

Confronted with a secular culture of corruption and collapse, both financial and moral, our bishops chose not to combat it with the hard truths of the Gospel. Instead, they chose to endow it with what was once the priceless seal of approval of the Church.  As leading bishops now admit, they were repeatedly silent about the moral issues they were consecrated to protect. Meanwhile, the political factions whose agenda targeted those moral principles kept the bishops silent with their filthy lucre.

“What?? All of them??” you ask. Well, no: there were, and are some noble exceptions. But their opposition, if they could manage it at all, didn’t amount to a hill of beans.

Like us, they were ignored.

So Obama has succeeded in his campaign to eviscerate our liberty. But that victory could not have come to pass without the acquiescence, and often the support, of America’s Catholic Bishops. Witness the pirouetting Joe Biden and Tim Kaine, pro-abortion “Catholic” ornaments on the corrupt and rotting Democrat tree, who flaunt their faux faith in the face of a stunning silence on the part of Catholic prelates.
Well, haven’t Catholics noticed this? Yes, many have, usually in small doses. And they have acted. Thirty million Americans now call themselves “ex-Catholics.” They constitute the second-largest religious denomination in America. Millions of them left out of disgust, to be sure. But millions more left because they had been disdained and abandoned.

*** and ***

[This is the first of a series on the role of the Catholic Church in the decline and fall of the Republic].

*** end quote ***

This has been a point I have made in the past. The “King” (i.e., the Gooferment) has bribed the Church and overlooked the pedophila which has “neutered” the Church leadership.

So sad.

“Ex-Catholics” are the “second-largest religious denomination in America”!

Wow!

So the “Secular Progressives” have destroyed the Catholic and Christian Churches. And as such have destroyed the American Republic.

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion . . . Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” — John Adams

So sad our downfall.

I think it began with the “free public schools” competing with Catholic Schools. And it all was lost form there.
