A daytime refuge for homeless people: the duo behind the pioneering effort
In San Francisco, Laura Slattery and Tina Christopher open church doors to homeless people during the day. The women’s own lives have taken elaborate twists and turns.
By Patricia Leigh Brown, Contributor November 3, 2016

*** begin quote ***

San Francisco — Tina Christopher’s day begins at 5:45 a.m. as she cleans the sidewalk in front of St. Boniface Catholic Church in the Tenderloin, the once-colorful vice district in San Francisco now better known as a province of the poor, the desperate, the addicted, and the down and out.

She picks up the food containers, the needles, the flattened bits of cardboard, and the wet shoes before making her daily announcement to an awaiting throng, some of them already asleep on the sidewalk. “All right my beautiful brothers and sisters!” Ms. Christopher says in her always-chipper voice. “Good morning! Time to get up! Wakey wakey!” Then she unlocks the church’s heavy iron gate.

Soon, St. Boniface’s 74 backmost pews will cradle some 150 homeless people seeking “sacred sleep,” the sound of snoring permeating the incense-filled room. Beneath the saints painted on the church’s glittering dome, they stretch out for nine hours of vital slumber, resting their heads on ad hoc sweatshirt and T-shirt pillows or sometimes their folded hands. For a brief moment, their faces, beatific and babylike in sleep, do not betray the nights of fearful wandering and the way concrete seeps into a person’s bones and stays there.

*** end quote ***

It’s sad that this has to be a heroic effort.

Perhaps if we had stronger churches and more “Christians” this would be uncommon.

Argh!

So sad. So glad that there are people like these.

Obituary

Fraser Patrick Donlan of Blakely died on Nov. 12, two days before his 97th birthday, at Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife was the late Dorothy Freeman Donlan.

He graduated from Manhattan College, where he played football in every game for 60 minutes. The New York Press Corps Nicknamed him the "Sixty-Minute Man" and the "Iron Man of College Football." He was named All-Metropolitan Tackle and Outstanding Lineman for New York City. He also received honorable mention for All-American honors for the All-American football team. He was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers by a flip of a coin with the New York Giants to play football in the All-American Football League. In 1944, he helped the 4th Marine Division football team win the championship of the Armed Forces Pacific League.

While in the Marines, Fraser fought in campaigns in the Marshall Islands, Saipan and Tinian, the Mariana Islands and Iwo Jima. On Iwo Jima's Hill 382, after fighting for two days, only six men were left alive from a company of 245 men. On this hill, known as the "Meat Grinder," Fraser lost his left leg. He was wounded in action four times and earned four Purple Hearts. He also received two Silver Star medals, two Bronze Star medals and two Presidential Unit Citations and the Pacific Theater Ribbon with four stars. Fraser rose in rank on the battlefield from second lieutenant to captain. He retired from the Marine Corps for disability as a major on Nov. 1, 1946.

Fraser married the former Dorothy Freeman on Nov. 17, 1945. In January of 1946, he started teaching at Blakely High School and was an assistant football coach for John "Papa Bear" Henzes, who had been his high school football coach.

Elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in November 1946, Fraser served from 1947 through 1950. He campaigned for United States Congress and lost in a close election by 3,000 votes. He was appointed as a Workmans Compensation Referee by Governor John Fine on Nov. 27, 1951, and retired on March 25, 1980.

Hanszen Laporte founding partner Anthony Laporte has been admitted as a member to the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). The ABOTA National Board of Directors elected Laporte based on his peer-reviewed proficiency as a trial lawyer and his character and commitment to the legal profession.

ABOTA was formed in 1957 to preserve the right to a civil jury trial against those that want to dismantle the system. Part of the ABOTA mission is to help educate and train trial lawyers, improve methods of procedure for the current trial court system, and create a community for trial attorneys seeking to best represent all litigants.

“I am deeply honored to become a part of ABOTA. Their efforts to evaluate the standards of integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession is something I value,” Laporte said. “ABOTA’s mission of fostering the improvement and access to the jury system is one that I have committed my career to as well.”

Anthony Laporte is a board-certified and AV Preeminent-rated trial lawyer with 25 years of experience. He received his B.S., Accounting from Manhattan College and J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center. As a litigator, Laporte focuses on getting his clients’ cases accurately assessed, while skillfully negotiating a path toward resolution and, when necessary, successfully trying the cases to verdict and judgment.

“I believe in juries and the jury system,” Laporte said. “While the cases I’ve worked on span from some of the world’s largest companies to individuals and families, I’m a passionate advocate for all of my clients. Everyone in our society is entitled to have their rights fairly represented and their positions credibly asserted. The courthouse doors should always remain open to all.”

ENDNOTE: "We don't like children anyhow"

2016-Nov-20

"Destroy another fetus now, We don't like children anyhow,"  song "The Future" by folk singer Leonard Cohen (1934 -2016)

# - # - #

A folk song writer, a Jewish Zen Buddhist, whose work I loved, even though I didn’t recognize it as his, has died.

I think this one line is worth remembering him for.

It makes me so sad. And, sums up how “Secular Progressives” can fool us by their language.

Sadly.
