The Phillips family in Tenino, Washington was on vacation when their neighbor Heidi Russell woke up on Saturday morning to find their house and car covered in spray painted racial slurs.
Resolving to clean up the vandalism before the Phillips returned, Heidi got the whole town to join her in painting over the graffiti.

Died on August 17, 2016 surrounded by his beloved family.
He was born on May 8, 1927 and raised in Greenwich Village; he never retired from his company, Pluribus Products. Peter served in WWII and had government contracts at work. Staunch in the Catholic faith, he attended Xavier High School & Manhattan College. He got his Masters in Industrial and Electrical Engineering at Brooklyn Polytech. He was a faithful member of The Rockaway Point Club for over 60 years. Other hobbies were fishing, hunting and doing the crossword puzzle.
Survived by his wife of 62 years, Lucretia and children, Laura Rizzotti of Providence RI, Peter and John Martino. Grandchildren: Carol, Beatrice, Robert, Christine, Sophia, Ava and Valerie. He is preceded by his daughter Carol of Palm Beach, Florida. He is laid to rest in the family plot at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale NY.

Today I received some sad news. One of our Manhattan College Alumni has passed away. Bill Lynch passed away from throat cancer on June 17. His remains are in the wall of the "Little Church around the Corner" on 29th Street in NYC. He has been missed by his friend from the Quad for some time but I will remember him always as a funny, witty and warmhearted. May your memory be eternal!

Obituary
Brian Michael Egan passed away on August 6th, 2016.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY he attended Manhattan College and later served his beloved country in the Coast Guard for four years.
He moved to Dallas, Texas, and met his wife Barbara Koller. They married, and together they raised two children. Brian and Barbara were a devoted couple for 51 years until his death in 2016.
In addition to raising a family, Brian was a manager and sales representative for Kennington Limited Ltd.
He left behind his wife Barbara Egan, their two children Michael, Patrick and his wife Jill.
He will be missed by many long time friends who will no longer receive his daily barrage of emails. A ceremony will be held on Thursday, September 1st at the Dallas Ft. Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, TX 75211. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Disabled American Veterans Charity.

Jay Fishman, Penn Trustee
Penn Charter Trustee Jay Fishman, W’74, WG’74, died on August 19 at the age of 63.
Most recently, he and his wife, Randy, directed significant support to comprehensive at-home respiratory care for adult Penn Medicine patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency due to neurological, muscular, skeletal or chronic respiratory diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (See here).
Mr. Fishman was “a printer’s son from the Bronx who went on to become one of the most admired CEOs in this country but never forgot his Penn roots,” said Penn President Amy Gutmann. He was a member of Penn’s Board of Trustees over the last 11 years; he was a Charter trustee and past chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee, a past member of the Executive Committee and a member of the Development and Budget and Finance Committees. He also was an Overseer of Penn’s Graduate School of Education and Penn’s School of Veterinary Medicine as well as a member of myriad committees, including the Class of 1974 Reunion Gift Committee, the Parent Leadership Committee, the Penn Alumni Board of Directors, the Advisory Board of the Alumni Council on Admissions, the Wharton Club of Minnesota Advisory Board, the Benjamin Franklin Society Committee, the Steering Committee for the Making History Campaign and the Industry Advisory Board of the Wharton Financial Institutions Center. He was also Chairman of the Travelers/Wharton Partnership for Risk Management and Leadership, which the company established in 2010. He shared his legendary business expertise as a speaker at the Wharton School.
A 2011 Forbes article that extolled his virtues as “Wall Street’s Honest Man” praised his extraordinarily long-term thinking when it came to business. The magazine quoted him as saying, “I don’t want to be [just] a caretaker. I want to leave something behind that was better than what I got.” President Gutmann said, “That very premise, which made Jay so successful in the business arena, also underlies his relationship with the University. Never just a caretaker, he truly has left Penn a better place.”
He was a strong supporter of Penn’s faculty and endowed the Fishman Family President’s Distinguished Professorship in 2014. He established the Fishman Vet Endowed Scholarship for veterinary students, the Shirley and Edward Fishman Memorial Fund, which provides financial support to outstanding Wharton undergraduates, and the Rodin-Fishman Summer Research Internship program, which provides summer internships for College students. He also enthusiastically offered internship positions within his company to Penn students. Demonstrating the importance of family in his life, he also funded a paver on the Class of 1949 Generational Bridge spanning 38th Street. It permanently joins his name with those of his parents who encouraged him to attend Penn and the two sons who followed in his footsteps.
As a dean’s list student at Wharton, he was a member of Phi Delta Epsilon, the Beta Alpha Psi accounting fraternity and the Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Wharton in 1974 and then joined the Coopers and Lybrand accounting firm as an audit supervisor. He went on to work for American Can Company and the private investment and leveraged buyout firm Goergen and Sterling. He later served as a senior executive at Shearson Lehman Brothers, Primerica Corporation, Citigroup and the Travelers Group, where he was President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He joined The St. Paul Companies in 2001 as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. When that insurance firm merged with the Travelers Property Casualty Corp. in 2004, Mr. Fishman went on to become Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the merged St. Paul Travelers Companies, the second-largest commercial insurance firm in the United States and the oldest business corporation in Minnesota.
He was well-known for his unwavering focus on long-term growth, even when it might have seemed to some that he was sacrificing short-term success. Under his steadfast leadership, Travelers continued to report profits throughout the country’s financial crisis and was noted for sagely avoiding the mortgage-related investments that plagued a large portion of corporate America. A Forbes reporter wrote of him, “In an era of Wall Street excesses and irresponsible financial behavior, Fishman stood out for his decency and restraint.” He stepped down as CEO of Travelers in December 2015, but remained Chair of the Board.
As chief executive of Travelers, he also encouraged the company’s support of Penn and its initiatives. With his assistance, the Travelers/Wharton Partnership for Risk Management and Leadership Fund was established, as was the Mobile CPR Project, a pilot program to train community members in Hartford, Connecticut, in the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and spread the understanding of CPR to low-income communities.
A member of the Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy, he was Chairman of the St. Paul Travelers Foundation and a Trustee of the Fishman Family Foundation. His other philanthropic activities included service as Chairman of the New York City Ballet; Vice Chairman of the Corporate Fund Board of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; a board member of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Connecticut Public Broadcasting, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the National Academy Foundation, the New York Philharmonic, the Englewood (New Jersey) Hospital and Medical Center and the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and an advisory board member of the Jazz Foundation of America.
A highly respected leader, he was past Chairman of the American Insurance Association; a Director of Nuveen Investments, Inc., the Carlyle Group and Platinum Underwriters Holdings, Ltd.; Presiding Director of ExxonMobil Corp., and a member of the Business Roundtable, the Business Council and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Mr. Fishman received the 2011 Joseph Wharton Award for Leadership, presented by the Wharton Club of New York, and Manhattan College’s 2002 De La Salle Medal, which recognizes excellence in business and corporate leadership.
Mr. Fishman is survived by his wife, Randy; their sons Jordan, C’03 and his wife Rebecca, and Scott, C’06, WG’12 and his wife Nicki; and three grandchildren.

I am with NYCPride and we worked with John for many years. He was a very caring soul that always helped with whatever he could and was one of the most reliable and hard working people we have ever worked with. We had missed him at this year’s pride and were wondering about him so thank you for posting this. Do you have any more information about his family and friends. We are planning a memorial for him and would like to have everyone there if possible.

Bill and I had many a rousing discussion of politics, religion, and life during our 4 years together, but I’d like to think we had a great deal of respect for one another and no small amount of affection. I ask for your prayers for Bill, my Son Scott's Business Partner and friend. Yesterday, Bill took himself off to Hospital with excrutiating skull/Brain pain. We have no results yet. We pray that whatever it is, it can be treated and resolved with a minimum of worry and complications. This came on unexpectedly as Bill has had no prior problem. Thank you. God Bless.

James Joseph McKenna, Jr., 82, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 30, 2016. Jim was born in Manhattan, NY to James and Dorothy (Moyland) McKenna. He attended St. John's Grammar School in the Bronx, entered the Junior Novitiate of the Christian Brothers in Barrytown, NY and completed his senior year of high school at Cardinal Hayes in the Bronx. Jim served as an Electrician's Mate with the US Navy from 1952-1956. Upon discharge, he continued to work as a licensed master electrician to put himself through Manhattan College where he studied Business Management. He had a long and successful career in the telecommunications industry.
A devoted son, husband, and father. Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a man of few words, with a sharp wit and a big heart. Jim selflessly devoted his whole life to his wife and seven children. He created a loving home where discipline, hard work, and character were instilled with love, joy, and laughter. Known to many as "The Big Guy", he inspired good behavior and respect with his presence alone. He loved to host family and friends, always ready to cook a big pancake breakfast for all. His grandchildren will always remember their "Denna" and his inexhaustible pocketful of tootsie rolls.
Surviving are his wife, Cathleen McKenna (nee Cremin); his seven children and their spouses, Michael and Kimberly McKenna, Cathleen and Joseph McCloud, Theresa and Robert Szatmary, Erin and Charles Walton, Eileen and Brian Farrell, Mary and John Bickel, and Kevin and Deborah McKenna; and his 16 grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Lt. Col. Robert McKenna.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2016 from 6-9 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, 115 Tindall Road, Middletown. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, September 2, 2016 at 9:30 am at the funeral home. A Funeral Liturgy will be offered Friday, September 2 at 10:30 am at St. Mary's Chapel, 26 Leonardville Rd., Middletown. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.

John has two brothers. Frank and Tom. When I learned of Johns passing (on this website as well), I sent a letter to his house (“to The Family of John Farina” 1512 Lurting Ave, Bronx, NY 10461) offering my condolences and sharing some remembrances, assuming someone would get the mail eventually. I received an nice Email reply from Tom and just a few days ago I received a letter from Frank . You could try contacting them at this address as I did.
I don’t know that I feel comfortable sharing the brothers email and home addresses publicly on this forum, but feel free to contact me directly c/o jasper@reinke.cc. I would be happy to forward any communications to him for you.
I would surely attend any memorial service in his honor. John also worked at Zoo-Rama Inc Pet Shop at 2566 East Tremont Ave. Bronx, NY 10461 He was well loved there as well.
In case you don’t know the details, as I understand it John walked from the pet shop down the block to the RiteAid Pharmacy to check his blood pressure (I don’t know the details; perhaps he didn’t feel right). He basically walked in and collapsed of a massive heart attack and never regained consciousness. He died that day – May 25, 2016.

I have some prayer requests to share with you.
Please keep Nancy Maksomski's Mom in your prayers. Her surgery, as you know, went well several weeks ago but she is still in pain and not as mobile as she would like. The pain is sometimes harsh. We pray that she continues to improve and her pain does not persist.
I ask for your prayers for the Wife of a good friend and High School Classmate of mine. Ellen is dealing with a type of Bird Disease that is very persistent and debilitating has been found to have her Breast Bone pressing upon her heart. Surgery of a delicate nature is required and her MDs down here in Delaware are looking for the proper specialist to perform the surgery as very few hospitals/Surgeons do it. The decision will be made within the next two weeks. The Cleveland Clinic may be where she will go albeit travel is difficult for her. Pleasekeep Don and Ellen in your prayers. Don was prayed for 5 months ago as he underwent Open Heart Surgery.
I ask for your prayers for for the Son of a good friend. This young man suffers from anxiety and depression and was recently hospitalized once again. Please keep him in your prayers as well as his parents, good folks all.

John J. Rienzo Jr. of Reading, age 90, passed away on August 29th, 2016. John was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle. He will be missed by all who knew him.
John was the beloved husband of the late Frances (Kuchenbrod) Rienzo. Devoted father of John J. Rienzo III and his wife Nancy, Gerard Rienzo and his wife Karen, the late Thomas Rienzo and his surviving wife Cathy, the late Michael Rienzo, Peter Rienzo and his late wife Joni, Maryann Ferrara and her husband Thomas, Paul Rienzo and his wife Susan, Anthony Rienzo and his wife Mary and Francis Rienzo and his wife Brenda. John was the cherished grandfather of 25 and the great grandfather to many. John was the brother of Mary Elizabeth Noll and her late husband Dean, Ignatius Rienzo and his wife Maureen, the late Aloysius Rienzo and his late wife Margaret, Gregory Rienzo and his late wife Rosalie, Francis Rienzo and his late wife Joan and Bernadette Rienzo and her companion Diane Condon of Reading, MA.
John grew up in Bayside, NY. Upon graduating from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, John enlisted in the United States Army where he served in Germany during WWII.
Upon his Honorable Discharge in 1946, John attended and graduated from Manhattan College School of Engineering with a degree in electrical engineering.
John became a resident of Reading with his loving family in 1956.
John retired from GE in the 1980's. Tired of the retirement life style, John returned to the workforce working for RD Kimball on the Ted Williams Tunnel.
John was very active in St. Agnes Catholic Church in Reading. He played many roles including, choir, Leader of the Men's group among others.
John enjoyed camping and hiking with his family, fishing and building balsam wood model airplanes. John also enjoyed going to breakfast at the Last Corner with the men and ladies from the St. Agnes.
Funeral from the Doherty-Barile Family Funeral Home, 11 Linden St. Reading Saturday at 9:30am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating John's Eternal Life in St. Agnes Church, 186 Woburn St, Reading at 10:30am. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories with the Family on Friday, September 2nd from 4-8pm in the Funeral Home. Parking attendants and ramped entrance are available. Interment Charles Lawn Cemetery, Reading.

Faced with a slew of noise complaints and the risk of losing its liquor license, Riverdale City Grill has pledged to begin closing its doors a couple of hours earlier – at 2 a.m.

Joe D’Onofrio will replace Don Linn as director of Chicago Distribution Center. University of Chicago Press director Garrett Kiely notified the approximately 50 academic and scholarly presses that CDC serves on Thursday, and D'Onofrio will start on Monday, September 12. Linn, who was named director of the CDC in 2012, left the organization in May.
D’Onofrio, who from 2011 until March of this year was director of supply chain operations for North America at Henry Schein, a global distributor of health care products and veterinarian supplies, has deep ties to the publishing industry. He was employed in various capacities at Simon & Schuster for 25 years, beginning in 1986 as director of corporate cost and inventory accounting, and culminating as senior v-p of supply chain operations, a position he held for eight years, from 2003-2011.
During his long tenure at S&S, D’Onofrio also served as general manager for Pocket Books for two years, and general manager for S&S Children’s Publishing Division for almost six years. He left S&S in 2011 after a reorganization of the house's operations and finance group.
In his email to CDC client-publishers announcing D’Onofrio’s appointment, Kiely said that among his accomplishments at S&S "were the reconfiguration of their fulfillment centers and the development and implementation of a master plan to upgrade and modernize the warehouse systems and infrastructure that resulted in increased storage capacity, improved shipping throughput, and gains in labor productivity."
D’Onofrio has been a member of the Book Industry Study Group board of directors and served on a number of BISG core committees, including supply chain EDI and the distribution executive interest group. He also served as chair of the Association of American Publishers’ committee on standards and best practices for affidavit returns.
“He has a deep and pragmatic understanding of both the book supply chain and the best practices and operations of the global supply chain network,” Kiely added in his email. And, speaking to PW, Kiley added that D'Onofrio has "a great deal of experience in all aspects of publishing, distribution, and supply chain management."
D’Onofrio, a long-time resident of the New York City metro area, who holds a B.S. in accounting and marketing from Manhattan College, is relocating to Chicago this month.

Scott MacConnell cherishes the memory of his years at Amherst College, where he discovered his future métier as a theatrical designer. But protests on campus over cultural and racial sensitivities last year soured his feelings. Now Mr. MacConnell, who graduated in 1960, is expressing his discontent through his wallet. In June, he cut the college out of his will. “As an alumnus of the college, I feel that I have been lied to, patronized and basically dismissed as an old, white bigot who is insensitive to the needs and feelings of the current college community,” Mr. MacConnell, 77, wrote in a letter to the college’s alumni fund in December, when he first warned that he was reducing his support to the college to a token $5 …
… Alumni from a range of generations say they are baffled by today’s college culture. Among their laments: Students are too wrapped up in racial and identity politics. They are allowed to take too many frivolous courses. They have repudiated the heroes and traditions of the past by judging them by today’s standards rather than in the context of their times. Fraternities are being unfairly maligned, and men are being demonized by sexual assault investigations. And university administrations have been too meek in addressing protesters whose messages have seemed to fly in the face of free speech.
Scott C. Johnston, who graduated from Yale in 1982, said he was on campus last fall when activists tried to shut down a free speech conference, “because apparently they missed irony class that day.” He recalled the Yale student who was videotaped screaming at a professor, Nicholas Christakis, that he had failed “to create a place of comfort and home” for students in his capacity as the head of a residential college.
