POSITRACTION: Caring for a porcupine -- I guess carefully

A mother like no other
She's never had puppies of her own, but this sweet Labrador has been a mother to a variety of different animals.
LAURA MOSSO October 21, 2011, 1:31 p.m.

*** begin quote ***

Hall and his wife, Nadine, said they noticed early on that regardless of the whether Lisha encountered a kitten or a baby hippo, she treated them all the same — like a child that needed a mother. "She would just walk up and lick the creature she was caring for. Although in the case of the porcupine that was more amusing," Rob Hall told The Daily Mail.

*** end quote ***

Isn’t “motherhood” something that is “universal”?

Talk about instinct. Talk about compassion. Even talk about birth rate replacement rates.

Killing babies, while at times in the wild of nature is unavoidable, is “unthinkable” in a civilized society.

Or at least, it was.

Or, should be.

Think about all the contributions that could have been made by “defectives”.

My morality or insight was formed in both a stupid computer game “Colossal Cavern” and the “juvenile” SciFi works of Heinlein.

I remembering him writing something like that the genetic advancement of human civilization was more important than the current government maintaining its position.

Today, I’m much more “simple”. Don’t kill what you can’t recreate. (Hence my position on the death penalty.)

So sad, that “we” have killed so many babies.

JNEWS: Sweeney, Robert [MC1976] interim replacement Somers guidance director

Sweeney Appointed Interim Guidance Director of Somers Schools
By TOM BARTLEY
July 15, 2016 at 11:15 AM

*** begin quote ***

SOMERS, N.Y. - Robert Sweeney, a veteran guidance counselor with extensive experience in college admissions, will fill in next year as the director of guidance in Somers schools, replacing Dr. Deborah Hardy.

*** and ***

Hardy’s interim replacement, a retiree from the Mamaroneck school system, will not require Somers to make either health insurance payments or contributions to the state retirement plan.

Sweeney left Mamaroneck in 2014 after 26 years in guidance, then spent last year as Harrison High School’s interim guidance coordinator. In 1986, he completed a 14-year run as director of admissions for Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry.

A one-time teacher, Sweeney is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor of arts in English and of Manhattan College, where he earned his master’s degree in guidance and counseling. He has twice been president of the Westchester Putnam Rockland Guidance Association.

In the district’s email to parents, Sweeney was quoted as saying his appointment is “a wonderful opportunity for me to work with the dedicated faculty, students and parents of Somers. I look forward to building relationships and identifying ways we can support our community further.”

Thomas Joseph Hicks, 88
Retired engineer, father of seven, enjoyed Maine vacations and Oldtimers baseball

On July 15, 2016, Thomas Joseph Hicks (Tom), 88, died peacefully at Staten Island University Hospital, surrounded by his family.

Tom was born in Rosebank on Staten Island, son of Edward and Mary (Cunningham) Hicks. He graduated from St. Peter's High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Navy. Tom returned to New York in 1946 to attend Manhattan College on the G.I. Bill.

Three days after graduating with high honors from Manhattan College with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, in June 1950, Tom married the love of his life, Gloria Elia. Tom and Gloria met as teenagers at Kaltenmeier's Playground in Rosebank, and they were married for 61 happy years until her death in 2011.
After his wedding, Tom served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during the Korean War and received an honorable discharge in 1952.

He earned his license as a professional engineer and worked for TAMS Consultants in Manhattan for over 40 years until his retirement in 1992. During his career, he was involved in the design and construction of major highways, bridges, tunnels, and airports in the U.S. and internationally.

Tom was an avid sports fan and played basketball and baseball at high school and throughout his younger days, retiring with the Staten Island Baseball Oldtimers at age 47. In his leisure he loved to read, travel, play tennis, and golf. He was active in his church, serving as Eucharistic minister for 20 years.

Ballplayer finds way to keep his dream alive
Posted July 14, 2016

*** begin quote ***

When Christian Santisteban woke up one morning recently, it took him a minute or so to remember where he was. Not surprising, since May and June had been a whirlwind of activity as well as an emotional roller-coaster for the recently graduated Manhattan College baseball star. So it was ironic that Santisteban, the reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Year this past season, woke up in the town of Normal, Illinois, as there has been very little that has been normal in his life of late.

After graduating from Manhattan in May with a degree in civil and environmental engineering, Santisteban, one of the greatest players in Jasper’s history, was expected to hear his name called during Major League Baseball’s three-day amateur draft in early June, and from there to begin his life of playing professional baseball, his boyhood dream.

The three-day draft came and went without Santisteban getting selected, but, as he told The Press several weeks ago, he would still try and find a way to keep his dream alive. And in late June he did just that, when he signed a professional contract with the Traverse City Beach Bums of the independent Frontier League.

Yes, it lacks the glitz of being picked in the draft, and the money, well, he could probably earn more bagging groceries at Stop and Shop. But Santisteban is in uniform again, he has a team to call home, and he is thrilled to be given an opportunity to continue chasing his dream.

Alfred Thomas Villeneuve
Obituary

A gentle and loving family man, Alfred "Fritz" Villeneuve passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 15th at home surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Syracuse, NY to Frank and Elizabeth, he grew up with three sisters - Mary, Doris and Margot. Fritz attended Manhattan College and Syracuse University, where he earned a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering and where he met the love of his life and steady partner for over sixty years - Mary Anne Smith. They married in 1956 and together have raised five children, traveled the world, contributed to the community in innumerable ways and have cherished their life together.

An Electrical Engineer with Hughes Aircraft Company for 30 years, Fritz was an intellectually curious man with an extraordinary ability to solve complex antenna design problems. He was a scout leader, family camp trumpeter and an active parishioner at Visitation Church.

Fritz loved his family and delighted in their activities and adventures, sometimes joining in. His twelve grandchildren adore him and are grateful for the memories of a life well lived that he leaves for them and their parents to emulate. His five children and their spouses appreciate the lessons he imparted about integrity, hard work and most of all being a loving partner.

Fritz loved a good pun; sometimes just for the halibut. He could nap almost anywhere. He nurtured a love-hate relationship with golf, never giving himself enough credit for his game. A trumpet player until hearing loss became too great an impediment, Fritz passed on a love of music to the next generations. Spending time with his children and grandchildren at Lake Tahoe each summer was especially sweet; ending the day on the deck with an ice cold beer and a big smile is how he will be remembered.

Fritz is survived by his wife of sixty years, Mary Anne; children, Tom (Victoria), Anne (Stuart), John (Deborah), Joe (Jennifer), and Ed (Mitzi); grandchildren, Nicole, Greg, Jesse, Daniel, Cassidy, Rachael, Michael, AJ, Sam, Dylan, Zachary and Jenna; his sister, Sister Doris Villeneuve, CSJ; and Junod, Burke and Alberg nieces and nephews and their families.

A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 20th at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Visitation, 6561 W. 88th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90045.Donations may be made in Fritz's memory to Carondelet Center, 11999 Chalon Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90049 or to Sarah's Guesthouse http://sarahsguesthouse.org

New dentist, but still All Smiles
By DAVID L. SHAW dshaw@fltimes.com

*** begin quote ***

WATERLOO — This Seneca County community’s newest dentist says she and her family are happy in the Finger Lakes and hope to be here a long time.

Dr. Erin McTernan took over the All Smiles Family Dentistry practice at 44 W. Main St. in March. She changed the name to All Smiles of the Finger Lakes and picked up many of the previous dentist’s patients.

Born in the Bronx, McTernan knew she was headed for a career in the health care field. She excelled in science and biology in high school; after further study and personal observation of a physician, optometrist and dentist, she chose dentistry.

“I was no stranger to dental work,” she said. “I had a lot of tooth issues as a child and I was lucky to have had a good dentist and good experiences.”

She attended Manhattan College and earned an undergraduate degree in biology before going to Tufts University Dental School in Boston.

In Boston, she worked part time at an Empire Vision optometry office. That’s where she met optometrist Dr. Christopher Main, a Geneva native. They dated, got engaged and married in 2008. They moved to Providence, R.I., where she did some additional dental training while her husband worked for Empire Vision.

They also began a family, which today consists of children ages 1, 4 and 6. They moved to Poughkeepsie to get closer to her husband’s hometown of Geneva, staying there three years.

Henry 'Hank' Oswald, 85, of Mendham, former Bell Labs engineer

Henry Oswald, 85, known to many as Hank, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2016, at his Mendham home of 51 years, with family members by his side.

The son of Henry Oswald Sr. and Lillian M. Ott Oswald, he was born Feb. 3, 1931, at Bethany Deaconess Hospital, Kings County, N.Y. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert G. Oswald, in 1996.

He was raised in Brooklyn, at 27 Ridgewood, Queens, N.Y. He attended St. Matthias Roman Catholic Elementary School and received a scholarship to attend Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. During his high school years, he was on the track team, participating in the mile run, 220, 440 and 880 relays. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1953.

Mr. Oswald served his country, during the Korean Conflict in the Army stationed at Frankford Arsenal in Pennsylvania, and in the Army Reserves.

His first job was with General Electric in Lynn, Mass. He was hired by Bell Labs in Whippany as an electrical engineer and member of the technical staff. Mr. Oswald was credited with several patents while he was employed at Bell Labs (“the Labs”). Each month he met with his colleagues at Redwoods in Chester, all donning their two-pocket shirts filled with pen and paper.

He met his future wife at the Labs, Marguerite “Peggy” Lake of Morristown, and they were married in December 1963 at Assumption Church in Morristown. They lived in East Hanover for a year and a half, before moving in 1965 to Mendham. They were blessed with five children, Paula Jean of Mendham; Henry III of El Segundo, Calif., his wife, Sanae Kato, and their children Henry IV and Minoru Vincent; David Vincent of Mendham; Laurie Ann of Mendham; and Matthew Thomas of Waxhaw, N.C. and his wife, Whitney Ayers, and their children, Kaleigh, Madison, Lindsay.

After he retired from the Labs, he helped his wife in their home with her childcare business, and specialized as the official child book reader.

Mr. Oswald participated in many of his children’s events over the years. He was a life member of the Mendham Township First Aid Squad for more than 20 years, serving as treasurer and CPR instructor.

He was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Mendham, where he was an usher for 25 years.

He maintained tropical fish tanks and an outdoor koi pond. He was an avid reader, always finished a crossword puzzle, completed over 56,456 sequential "Free Cell" computer games, and enjoyed television, especially “Games of Thrones” and the Sci-Fi channel. Nick was one highly respected and very gracious supporter of the Manhattan College Environmental Engineering program. At various consultor meetings, Nick would never lose his cool and always had thought provoking suggestions to offer. The college and I will miss him greatly. In my stints as chair and program director, I was happy to have Nick's ever generous support. Peace Nick and keep smiling.

Nick was a great friend. He loved Manhattan College and gave substantial financial aid for the development of the environmental engineering graduate program.as well as for scholarships for deserving students. The college named the library and conference room in his honor. Manhattan College will always honor him. When I retired from teaching in 1995, he gave me a gift with which I am deeply grateful.

I will always remember Nick’s rendition of "Good Night Irene" at a New Year's Eve party at my house in Syosset many moons ago. He had Joan and me, Ed and Jean Carr, and my husband Bill Parry cheering and laughing our heads off. Why do I imagine Bill and Jeannie welcoming Nick?

My deepest sympathy to the Bartilucci family at this sad time. I have known Nick & Joan for many years through the New York Water Envvironment Association (NYWEA). I, along with the "family" of NYWEA are very sad and will have the family in our prayers. Nick's truly professional demeanor, wisdom, guidance and friendship will be greatly missed....

I am writing this on Father’s Day. Our tradition of breakfast in bed gave way to the new Waffle House in downtown Decatur. It was the kid’s idea (which frankly, seems to be an alarming trend for Father’s Day activities) but we all enjoyed it.

The day has drifted along – bike riding for Kristen and Margo, soccer in the park for me and Elliott, errands, baseball practice in the early evening. I even flexed my dad muscles by reading the New York Times and watching the U.S. Open. But I keep coming back to thoughts of my brother Rob.

Rob’s wake and funeral last month must have set some sort of Catholic Church attendance record. Do they keep stats? The three wake sessions were hardly enough for the throngs of people who came through. His funeral filled St. Agnes Cathedral for the first time since 9/11. Robert Jr.,16, gave a poignant and mature eulogy buttressed on either side by his siblings Caitlin,14, and Patrick, 12. It could not have been written or delivered without the gift of time that Rob gave Suzanne and the kids. He took a dire diagnosis and somehow stretched it out for six-and-a-half years like it was an entirely negotiable contract.

*** and ***

One attendee said he worked with Rob at Verizon many years ago. He was younger than my brother, but a fellow Manhattan College alum so Rob took him under his wing. He beamed when he spoke about how Rob was the most intelligent guy in the department and also the most patient and helpful. He felt so fortunate to have known and worked with Rob and he just wanted me to know that. And now I am so thankful to know that.

In the race to replace state Sen. Adriano Espaillat, who won the democratic nomination for New York’s 13th Congressional District, there are four candidates: Marisol Alcantara, Luis Tejada, Micah Lasher and former Councilman Robert Jackson.

Ms. Alcantara, a Manhattan College graduate and, like the outgoing Mr. Espaillat, a Dominican immigrant, won a Women of Distinction award from the outgoing senator’s office in 2015, and worked as campaign manger for Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez in 2001 and 2008.

Jess McMahon: Boxing Promoter and Sire of the WWE

*** begin quote ***

The story of the McMahon family’s wrestling empire begins May 26, 1882, with the birth of Roderick “Jess” McMahon to Irish immigrants Roderick and Elizabeth McMahon. Jess’s career began early when, as a child, he put on kids wrestling matches, charging “pins, marbles, and pennies” for admission. According to Tim Hornbaker’s book, National Wrestling Alliance, Jess’s parents ran a hotel in New York City and with his middle-class upbringing, Jess graduated from Manhattan College in 1899 with a commercial degree, but he eschewed a white collar career to undertake what would be his true calling, and legacy, as one of the best fight promoters in history.

Jess and his brother, Edward, founded the New York Lincoln Giants in 1911, a black baseball team that had numerous wins in their first three years, including victories over all-white teams. Faced with money trouble, the brothers sold the team in 1914, but managed to travel to Cuba the following year to promote a fight between Jack Johnson and Jess Willard, in which Willard managed to knock out the champion. Jess already had a relationship with Johnson after securing an enormous $25,000 guarantee for the champion in 1912 for his fight with Joe Jeannette in 1912. Jess showed particular aptitude for setting up a fight that would be exciting not only in the U.S., but also in France and England, where Jeannette was a favorite.

Tyn Myint-U, 84

Tyn Myint-U, a former Westport resident, died July 22 in the Boston area. He was 84.

He was husband of Aye Aye Thant, daughter of U Thant, the third secretary general of the United Nations. Aye Aye Thant was active in U.N.-related activities in Westport.

Together Aye Aye and Tyn established the Thant Institute “to reflect and promote her father’s values and ideals.”

Born Jan. 1, 1932 in Mandalay, Tyn was one of Burma’s first state scholars, studying at Michigan University and then finishing his Ph.D. in aeronautics at New York University.

He was a rocket scientist by training and taught for many years as a professor of mathematics at Manhattan College and Fairfield University, writing two textbooks on differential equations.

He later worked for the United Nations in Bangkok and New York.

Aye Aye Thant has lived in the United States since 1957 when her father was first appointed as an ambassador at the U.N.

Since leaving Burma in 1953, Tyn had always wanted to return home and was finally able to do so in 2012.

But he had to return to the United State less than three years later due to his declining health.

He is survived by his wife, Daw Aye Aye Thant, a son, Thant Myint-U, three daughters, Khinlei Myint-U, A-Thi Myint-U, and Aye Myint Myint-U, and four grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday, July 25 in Concord, Mass.
