POSITRACTION: Ice Cream Shop Worker Stands Up for Muslim Girls

Ice Cream Shop Worker Stands Up for Muslim Girls When Man Bullies Them (WATCH)
by Terry Turner - Jun 2, 2016

*** begin quote ***

The man had been spouting racist and religious insults when Noah stepped in, giving him his money back and kicking him out of Andrew’s Ice Cream and Dessert in Orange County.

*** end quote ***

“First they came …” is a famous statement and provocative poem attributed to pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis' rise to power and the subsequent purging of their chosen targets, group after group. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came_...

Worst thing that can happen is when “we” turn on each other. Failing to stand up others is the same as “turning on them”.

I hope that Jaspers would always have the courage and opportunity to stand up.

I firmly believe that Catholics are on the list of minorities that the Politically Correct “Secular Progressive” Social Justice Warriors would like to see “go away”!

And, they might just have their way if “we” don’t speak up.

COMMENT: Apoldo, Lou (MC1963) agrees on the endnote

John, I just read your Endnote in this week's Jasper Jottings about the Church spending over $2 million to lobby against child rape legislation, with total disgust.  I thought that the Holy See had removed the "Pedophile Protector" Bernard Cardinal Law and sentenced him to a desk job in Rome.  Apparently, Law wasn't the only one involved in obfuscating and covering for perverted priests, and it now looks like it may not just be a few bad apples, but a matter of unstated but institutionalized Church policy.  I too share your opinion on this subject.  Argh!

ADMINISTRIVIA: Last week's issue had an incorrect title internally

“Haste makes waste” — Ben Franklin

In posting this week’s issue, I notice that last week’s had an incorrect title only on Facebook.

Interesting, Facebook picks up the title from an internal web page header. Last week, I screwed it up — how I don’t know — but Facebook picked it up.

I fixed the issue on the jasper jottings website but couldn’t doing anything about the Facebook post.

COMMENT: Bryk, William (MC1977) remembers Farina, John [MC1978 RIP]

RE: John Farina ’78

John was my fraternity brother in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Pi Chapter. He was a sweet, good-humored, and witty man and I was always happy to see him. Like most good-natured people, he was intensely serious about the things that mattered to him: God, truth, facts, and the service of others. His death diminishes me.

JNEWS: Leader, Joseph [MC1986] COO Metro rail, bus and paratransit services

Metro GM Appoints New Chief Operating Officer
June 22nd 2016

Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld today announced the appointment of Joseph Leader as the new Chief Operating Officer in charge of rail, bus and paratransit services, effective August 1. Leader will also provide executive management of Metro Transit Police, parking and support services.

After 30 years in transportation operations, Leader recently served as a consultant to the General Manager/CEO on rail organizational and fleet management as an associate for Bianco Associates.

“Working with Joe on restructuring Metro’s rail operations gave me an opportunity to learn his strategic approach to operational safety, day to day safety culture, and his customer service orientation, which are consistent with the way I want Metro to conduct itself moving forward,” said Paul J. Wiedefeld. “I am pleased that Joe sees us as an organization that is changing and hungry for improvement, and that he is enthusiastic about taking on this crucial role.”

Until this year, Leader served as Senior Vice President of the Department of Subways, New York City Transit, which includes 27,000 employees, 800 track miles and 469 stations. He previously served as Chief of Safety Investigations for NYC Transit. Through a strong incident command structure and a solid safety and customer service culture, Leader and his team were credited with restoring service in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. He also led a comprehensive maintenance program that accelerated track work, and improved safety and productivity.

Leader has an electrical engineering degree from Manhattan College and serves as a local volunteer firefighter.

In a notice to Metro employees today, Wiedefeld thanked Jack Requa for his support as Acting COO, and said he will resume his role as Executive Managing Officer.

JOBIT: Winslow, Roger G. Sr. [MC???? RIP] on 2016-Jun-20

Roger G. Winslow Sr.
April 19, 1927 - June 20, 2016

Long-time Saratoga Resident Roger George Winslow, Sr., devoted father of a dozen children, passed away peacefully the day after Father's Day.

Roger was raised in Floral Park, New York and enjoyed summers at his grandparents' farm in Dover, New Hampshire. He graduated from Chaminade High School and went on to Manhattan College to study electrical engineering. He interrupted his studies to join the Navy at the end of World War II.

Inspired by John Kennedy to join in the space communications revolution and to provide for his family, he and his wife Terry in the winter of 1963 drove two station wagons loaded with their children from Long Island NY to the Bay Area where Roger began work as an electronics engineer for Philco Ford (later Ford Aerospace, now Space Systems Loral). At Ford he worked on telecommunication satellites and a magnetometer sent on Apollo 12 to the moon.

Whether at work, IEEE meetings, 4th of July parties in Saratoga, tennis mixers at Blue Lake Springs, Stanford football games, Manhattan College alumni events or Mayflower Society gatherings, Roger always warmly connected with old friends and caringly sought out new ones.

Raised during the Depression of the 1930's, Roger and Terry made education a priority and provided their sons and daughters the opportunity to attend college and pursue successful careers in engineering, public service, education, banking, accounting, insurance and computer science.

Roger's wife of 60 years, Terry passed away in 2010 and son Philip in 2003. Roger is survived by his sisters Grace and Marilyn of Nashville TN, his children, Roger Jr and Sue of San Jose, Gregory and Liz of San Jose, Lawrence and Clarissa of Baldwin Lake, Donna of Sunnyvale, Kathleen and Bill Nelson of Plano Texas, Cecilia and Gary Hageman of Mountain View, Mary and Scott Eschen of Saratoga, Stephen and Helen of Malden MA, Elaine and Scott Jacobs of Foster City, David and Katie of Culver City and Richard of San Jose. Lovingly missed by nearly two-dozen grandchildren and a dozen great-grandchildren.

A memorial service in the Bay Area will be held the last week of July. Details to follow. Please sign the on-line guest registry at mercurynews.com to receive information. Donations in Roger's honor may be made to the Tech Museum of San Jose or the Northern California Chapter of the MS Society.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for several

Good Evening All,
From Ed McEneney, he asks for our prayers (as shared with Roberta Ronan's Prayer Group) for Father Bill Gannon who is in Rosary Hill Home. We pray also for Anthony V. who is suffering from Long Term Headaches and elevated temperatures. We pray for their recovery.
Nancy Maksomski and her Family thank you once again for all your prayers for her Mom. Mrs. Maksomski went home yesterday. She is still in pain and very medicated and the MDs have required that she have no visitors or Phone Calls for the next two months so that she may focus all her energy upon healing. Mrs. Maksomski balked at this as she said she needs to see her newest Granddaughter,  Charlotte. The MDs agreed to this as Charlotte brings her such joy and that helps her healing process. If you saw Miss Charlotte you would know why she is such a joy. Mrs. Maksomski also hopes that Her Oldest Granddaughter, Margaret will come to visit. Margaret is a wonderful little helper and loves being with her Grandparents. Please keep Mrs. Maksomski in your prayers as we pray for her complete recovery.
Thank you. God Bless.

‘My Giant Life’

If life weren’t interesting enough already, you might catch more than just a glimpse of Majors and his new bride on a show called “My Giant Life” on the TLC Network. The show filmed the couple’s Valentine’s Day date and more recently their wedding.

“It’s been a really interesting experience and I’m looking forward to seeing how they portray her,” Majors said. “Because there’s some really interesting characters on the show. There are some controversial people on the show who have some unique lifestyles and habits. The show depicts how hard it is to be a tall lady in an average or short person’s world.”

At 6’6”, Alexis Majors is actually one of the shorter stars of the show. Her husband is 6’1”. Although the couple met in Arizona, Alexis was also studying in New York, and she graduated from Manhattan College last year.

Majors is originally from the Buffalo-Rochester area, and whenever he had a long weekend from West Point, he would often rent a car to visit some of the people he grew up with five hours away.

“My wife and her family are just amazing, and have been very supportive of me the past few years.” Majors also expressed thanks to his mother, Amanda Mana of Florence, for her love and encouragement over the last nine years, and his twin big sisters, Allison and Cherie of Florence. “My sisters are awesome and have been great to us.”

Majors expressed appreciation for others in Florence such as the late Charlie Bussey and his wife, Olivia. He considers them among his mentors and he continues to stay in touch with Olivia.

He also continues to be amazed by the love and generosity of the military community.

“People that aren’t family just show up for me. When I came home from Afghanistan my family couldn’t make it. I had 14 people from my church and Bible study group, friends that I met in Colorado Springs and other soldiers who knew me, they took time out of their day to show up and greet me when I got home. It was amazing. …

“That’s what has made the military community awesome to me. That’s why I plan on doing it until I can’t do it anymore.”

I had great experiences with Dennis Day. I was a cub reporter for the Quad when DD was on a ladder changing the name of XXXXXX to Manhattan Collge Parkway. And I was here in Lincoln NE when he was singing at the State Fair and visited with him during a rehearsal.

OK you old Jaspers. What was the prior name of Manhattan College Parkway and what did it mean?

ENDNOTE: Responding to the Orlando terrorism

Prompted by a Catholic Vote email

*** begin quote ***

Our prayers today are for all the victims and their families in Orlando.

Words are difficult in the aftermath of events such as this.

Pope Francis immediately condemned the “homicidal folly and senseless hatred” of the attack.

And yet, within hours, the political knives were quickly unleashed. Left wing partisans predictably blamed “automatic weapons” and inadequate gun control, while some (including an ACLU lawyer) blamed Christians and our fidelity to the institution of marriage.

Others rightfully called for prayers for the victims and their families and mourning for the loss of life. Many expressed unity and resolve in stopping the threat of Islamic terrorism.

This much seems clear: we are facing an existential threat in the form of Islamic terrorism. This was an attack on innocent victims in Orlando, and the second major attack in six months by a person connected to ISIS. Murder is murder, no matter who is targeted. This attack killed 49 people and injured many more at a gay night club. It was perpetrated by a man connected with a radical movement that continues to torture and murder Christians overseas, including countless women and children every week.

So what can be done? What should we do as Catholics and as citizens?

*** end quote ***

I’d point to the US foreign policy as the root cause of these troubles.

If “we” continue the way we have been going, then the attacks will just become more frequent and earlier.

We need to be more like Switzerland and mind our own business.
