POSITRACTION: Another example of pay it forward

Ex-Homeless Man Gives $10K to High School After 2 Teens Buy Him Ticket Home
by Terry Turner - Mar 28, 20160

*** begin quote ***

A former homeless man’s $10,000 gift will inspire and reward random acts of kindness for years to come, thanks to two Illinois teens.

The generosity and compassion shown to Wade Herter by a pair of high school boys was never forgotten. Herter was a homeless drifter, freezing and alone in a blizzard three years ago when the two seniors helped him.

Ryan Kodat and Luke Arnold found him some warm clothes and a jacket and purchased a train ticket that would let him see his father. They never expected anything in return, but Herter has always wanted to do something special to thank them.

No act is too small.

Very impressive version of pay it forward.

New York City from that era, and the Bronx particularly, had a Dante-esque quality. A little Paradiso — all those Catholic schools (oy), Hayes, Spellman, Tolentine, Mount Saint Michael, Stepinac, Fordham University, Manhattan College; The Angel Esmeralda, by the Bronx’s own bard; and lest we forget, Mount Hope and Mount Eden (if only) — though more celebrated for Inferno: The Bronx Is Burning; Love Goes to Buildings on Fire; last October’s Macabre Suite, a pop-up art exhibit and party with Melo and a Jenner and developers trying to rebrand Mott Haven “the Piano District”; and the recent novel City on Fire, which earned the author, Garth Risk Hallberg, $2 million, quadruple what Reggie was paid in 1977, ’76 too, and probably ’78, even after going deep three times in Game 6.

2016-May-09

Good Morning CIC,

As much as I would hate to dispute Mike McEneney, 1953, I believe that Mike Bruno, former Jasper basketball player, was a member of the class of 1979.  I remember him well from seeing him play at the Garden (victorious over Fordham, of course) and particularly in Manhattan’s memorable matchup with Notre Dame in South Bend in the winter of 1977.  The team played ND during winter break and if I recall correctly I believe Mike scored the first Jasper basket about 5 minutes into the game.  ND had a great team that year and was ranked in the top ten, while Manhattan was not yet ready for prime time.  There was a bus trip was organized from the college and  I was privileged to be on that trip.  After Mike scored many, many rolls of toilet paper were flung from the rafters of the Athletic and Convocation Center, where the Manhattan contingent was seated.  I remember Sean, one of the bartenders form The Terminal flew in from New York to take in the game with us.  My brother, a student at ND at the time, told me that the Manhattan fans made more noise than any other visiting team that year, including UCLA, and there were only about 50 of us on that trip.   To my knowledge, ND has never invited us back.  It might have had something to do with the condition of the motel we stayed at.  Great memories, thanks for keeping us Jaspers up to date through jasperjottings.

JOBIT: Fox, Arthur J. Jr. [MC1947 RIP] at 2016-May-11

2016-May-12

http://www.enr.com/articles/39450-arthur-j-fox-jr-enr-editor-in-chief-emeritus-is-dead-at-92

Arthur J. Fox Jr., ENR Editor in Chief Emeritus, Is Dead at 92
Debra K. Rubin

Arthur J. Fox Jr., who parlayed early construction field experiences for a state highway department and for the U.S. Army on World War II battlefields to build industry trade journal Engineering News-Record into the so-called “Bible” of the now $8.5-trillion global construction sector, as editor-in-chief for nearly 25 years, died on May 11 in Rockville, Md. He was 92.

The cause was pancreatic cancer, according to his daughter Jane Fox of Wilmington, N.C.

Fox set high standards of exacting news coverage on subjects often highly technical and fast-breaking, and, on ENR's editorial page, often took stances on issues that were not always popular.

A 40-year ENR veteran, Fox also created or propelled numerous innovations that now define the non-residential construction sector—particularly the journal’s 50-year-old revenue-based rankings of leading firms that are widely referenced to measure the industry’s health and provide disciplined analysis and needed transparency in a fractious sector of mostly privately-held businesses.

Fox traveled widely to report first-hand at often remote or dangerous jobsites of massive, nation-altering projects—from record-setting dams in the Soviet Union to the U.S. military buildup in South Vietnam.
He also was a strong proponent of industry unity-building and ethics. He helped drive adoption of more stringent anti-corruption rules for engineering professionals and project owners on international work through the American Society of Civil Engineers begun in 2004.

Amending ASCE's existing ethics code to add stronger anti-corruption language "was like adding another amendment to the Constitution," says Michael Sanio, ASCE's director of sustainability and international alliance. "Art's absolute commitment to this was critical." Adds Wendy Hallgren, Fluor Corp. vice president for compliance:  "He believed strongly that corruption drained economies, particularly developing economies, of the resources and projects that would allow them to advance."

Fox epitomized ENR’s key role as the media authority on the non-residential construction sector, tapped by The New York Times in a 1978 story to offer quick verification and analysis of the $3.4-billion price of a planned university campus in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

"It was a great honor for ENR to be called the bible of the construction industry but [Fox] never let us forget the journalistic responsibility that carried,” says Howard Stussman, his successor as editor-in-chief. “People allowed themselves to be interviewed because they believed the truth about a project or situation had to be told and that ENR was the trusted place to do that."

But Fox also took heat in 1966 from former New York City public works czar Robert Moses—and from executives at ENR’s then-parent McGraw-Hill—for a headline wording snafu related to Moses' political feud with then-Mayor John Lindsay over a stalled highway project. Despite a mea culpa on ENR’s letters page, Fox writes in an internal office memo of being “lectured” by the formidable Moses when summoned to his office, and expecting to be “thrown out” out of the meeting. But, insisted Fox in his memo: “I can’t promise that we’ll never again run afoul of this fellow.”

"In any news organization, the journalists need to know they can do their jobs without wondering whether the eyes of ‘corporate' are upon them," says William Reinhardt, a former senior editor who now is editor-in-chief of industry newsletter Public Works Financing.

Referring to ENR’s particular reputation for reporting of construction disasters, Reinhardt added that “ENR under Art Fox aggressively reported the causes of major engineering failures where the reputations of important people and companies were at stake. Art never flinched. When the reporting was done professionally, he stood behind his people. The industry benefitted from having a trusted source of information on the cause of failures. ENR's editorial staff benefitted from having Art Fox as their leader.”
Fox stepped down as ENR Editor in Chief in 1988, and is the recipient of numerous industry awards. He also served as president of the American Society of Civil Engineers and helped found several organizations that link industry businesses and academic institutions.

In naming Fox for the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence in 2009, the Construction Industry Institute cited "his expert and incisive coverage of major construction projects and activities throughout the world," adding that ENR "should be ‘must’ reading for college students planning to enter the construction profession.”

Fox received his BS in civil engineering from Manhattan College in New York City, in 1947. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1982, and remained an active alumnus.

A memorial service for Art Fox is set for Wednesday, May 18, 11:00AM  at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 9200 Kentsdale Drive in Potomac, Md., with a reception to follow at Congressional Country Club, 8500 River Road, Bethesda, Md.

Thomas/Ainsley,

Hello, I am a Manhattan College graduate (’91) and former baseball player.  I am writing to you about another former student and player, Liam Frawley, who played from ’86 through ’90.

Liam is currently going through some tough times and he and his family are looking for some assistance (see the link to an article from the Rockland County Journal News Below).  Liam was the beloved AD at Tappan Zee high School in Rockland County.  He suffered an aneurysm in January and is on the road to recovery, but it will be a long and hard road.  A fundraiser has been planned for June, to help raise money for his continued care and a web site has been set up to help him and his family and to accept donations for the fundraiser.    frawleystrong.org

While at Manhattan, Liam was a student athletic trainer and baseball player.  He graduated with a degree in Physical Education and also earned a Masters of Arts in Counseling at Manhattan.  Liam went on to work as an athletic trainer for several professional organizations and eventually landed in Rockland County, where he became the Athletic Director in 2005

I don’t know if anyone has previously contacted the Alumni office about Liam, but I am wondering if there is any way to get a notice out to the alumni regarding his situation, the fundraiser and the frawleystrong.org web site?  Letting the alumni know about Liam and his situation.

I have reached out to the baseball coach and the athletics department with a similar request, but I figured I would reach out to the Alumni office also with the same request…. Any help/assistance in getting the word out would be appreciated.

Fundraiser set for AD who has mountains to climb.  A fundraiser is set for Tappan Zee AD Liam Frawley, a national education leader who is recovering from a brain aneurysm.   Check out this story on lohud.com: http://lohud.us/26QOglN

BJ Greco (bgreco@socsd.org) worked with Liam at TZ High School and can be contacted for any additional information or any other information about Liam or if you would like, I could put BJ in touch with your office.

Thank you.

Luigi Zecchin, PE. CCM
Sr. Project Manager

CENTRAL VALLEY — In addition to voting on the budget, residents will elect three members to the Monroe-Woodbury School Board on Tuesday, May 17. These positions are unpaid and carry a three-year term.

*** and ***

Staci McCleary

Monroe has been my home since 2006. My husband and I have four children, ranging in age from 9-15, who attend the M-W schools. I have an undergraduate degree in education from Manhattan College and a masters in school counseling from St. John’s University. My work experience includes working for the New York City BOE as an elementary school counselor.

I am running for the M-W BOE because I believe in our school district and want to help create positive changes for our community, students and faculty. The current administration and BOE members have worked hard to keep the programs and personnel needed even with the drastic cuts in state aid. I will continue these efforts once elected.

My involvement in the school district began 10 years ago with Sapphire PTA, and has included chairing several committees, serving as PTA Board secretary and as a PTA President of Sapphire Elementary for over four years. I am currently the President of the M-W PTA Council. I have had a wonderful working relationship with fellow PTA board members, parents, faculty and M-W Administration.

Should I be elected I will continue to serve all of the M-W students.

Shereese Mullings of Island Voice, a Staten-Island based youth empowerment organization, is a Manhattan College graduate, an actress and singer, and winner of the Nina Simone Youth Advocacy Award. Who better than to consult for guidance on the three Simone films? For Shereese, “The Amazing Nina Simone” captured the “essence” of Nina even better than “What Happened Miss Simone.” The story of a classically trained musician forced to abandon the classical music career she was destined to have — her parents were not allowed to sit in the front of her recitals — in order to reinvent herself as a jazz artist is told with “objectivity,” reports Shereese.

ENDNOTE: Trump is prettiest horse in the glue factory’s coral

At Last, America First!
By Patrick J. Buchanan
April 30, 2016

*** begin quote ***

Can anyone argue that our interventions to overthrow regimes and erect democratic states in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen have succeeded and been worth the price we have paid in blood and treasure, and the devastation we have left in our wake?

*** end quote ***

As I have said many times before in both my personal blog “Reinke Faces Life”, in private emails, and conversations, “Trump is prettiest horse in the glue factory’s coral”.

I’d much rather have a Ron Paul, than a Donald Trump.

But if “The Donald” can give us a peaceful foreign policy, then that might be the best the USA can get this election cycle.

(Note that Buchanan blames the R’s and D’s for the foreign policy débâcle. And, we haven’t had a peaceful foreign or domestic police for a long time.)
