Can Women Have It All? Transitional Moms Struggle to Return to Work

Kerry Dolan, Founder of OptIn (www.OptBackIn.com) experienced these set-backs first-hand. She started Optin in California a couple of years ago after facing her own career transition challenges. OptIn is a multi-platform start-up resource for women looking for support as they navigate the challenges when re-entering the workplace.

“When he met me, I was a high-power executive. By the time I thought to go back to work, I had no resources, I had self esteem issues and I’d lost my sense of self. It [work] turned out to be a very big part of who I was. I had lost a big part of me.” - Kerry Dolan, Founder, OptIn

Dolan, herself a mom and former successful Manhattan executive in the tech start-up industry for over 15 years, got married and gave up her career a year-and-a-half later when her doctor gave her an ultimatum: “Go on bedrest or your babies are going to die,” she says. Dolan spent the next 8 months tending to her delicate identical fetuses, who are now healthy 12 year-old girls.

Work was on the back of her mind even as she nursed her then newborns, but Dolan says, “I couldn’t keep my foot in the door at the rate I was used to working. I was used to giving 115% and at the time, it wasn’t going to be possible.” So she stayed home full-time while her husband worked full-time. The couple went on to have a third child.

“I felt totally trapped. I had even considered taking a job as a dental assistant. My husband reasoned that it wouldn’t even pay for the gas and dry-cleaning bills. My self-esteem took a big hit,” Dolan boldly acknowledges. Eventually, she and her husband started having marital issues and sought the support of a therapist. Her “aha” moment came when the therapist asked what the conversation around career and staying at home had been like. She realized then there had never been a conversation. After giving birth, she says, “I just kind of fell into being a full-time mom.”

Dolan and her husband are now divorced. She contends her not going back to work ruined her marriage. “When he met me, I was a high-power executive. By the time I thought to go back to work, I had no resources. I had self esteem issues and I’d lost my sense of self. It [work] turned out to be a very big part of who I was. I had lost a big part of me.”

With two girls of her own, Dolan says she wanted them to know women needed to be independent and financially secure for themselves. Her bigger life’s purpose today is to be what she calls a mother’s advocate. She envisions a cultural shift around the perceptions of working moms, one state at a time. And this is what she says she hopes to achieve with OptIn, to help women find their way back to work and, for some, their selves. Optin offers a 6 week workshop including interview prep, self-esteem courses and connection to other women like themselves. Dolan notes many of the women are well-educated women who were feeling down on themselves. She says they were grateful for the opportunity to stay at home, but many were not fulfilled the way they had once been in their careers.

To honor a brother who died on 9/11, Kathy Cunningham raised $500,000 to help someone else.

For a few years after Donald Robertson Jr. perished in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, his sister Kathy Cunningham looked for a meaningful way to honor his memory.

Boy, did she find it.

The Spring Lake resident connected with the Tunnel to Towers 5K, an annual run through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel that traces the footsteps of Stephen Siller, a Brooklyn firefighter who died in the towers after racing through the tunnel on foot to get to the scene. Over the past decade, Cunningham has organized a fundraising team to participate in the run, and they have generated nearly $500,000 in donations — enough to build an adaptable "smart home" for a catastrophically injured veteran. It will bear her brother's name.

*** and ***

She is not sure where the Donald Robertson Jr. home will be, but it's certain to be a point of pride for the many folks who pitched in. The Atlantic Club was heavily involved, and so was the lacrosse community. Donald played lacrosse in high school and college, and all four of Kathy's children excelled in the sport — Sean, Patrick and Conor at Christian Brothers Academy, and Kaitlyn at Red Bank Catholic. All of them have worn No. 26, the same number Donald wore.

*** and ***

Of the 500 people on her fundraising team, "Team Shamrock," more than 200 have a lacrosse connection. That includes the entire men's and women's programs at Manhattan College, where Kaitlyn currently plays.

During Martin Luther King Day, Liam Frawley climbed Mount Washington with his 13-year-old son, Dylan.
Heavy wind kept them from reaching the summit but the two described the experience as amazing.

A week later, the 47-year-old Tappan Zee athletic director suffered what his wife, Janine, describes as “pretty much the worst kind of hemorrhage you can have.”

Now, Frawley fights to climb mountains much higher than Mount Washington each day and the Rockland community is joining in, hoping to make things just a bit easier for him and his family.

An aneurysm burst in his brain while Frawley was at home on Jan. 25. He spent almost two months at Westchester Medical Center before being transferred to Helen Hayes Hospital in Haverstraw for rehabilitation.

That included pitching for Manhattan College. Frawley, who listens intently as his wife reads to him from the book, "Baseball as a Road to God," later became a professional baseball trainer for eight years.

As most of you know, Marge was diagnosed with microscopic colitis, which they believe was caused by her taking Cymbalta.  Nice...how one med causes another problem.  They have given her steroids for the colitis, but replaced the Cymbalta with another anti depressant.  But the withdrawal symptoms of coming off Cymbalta are very severe and we are not sure how long they will last, but she is experiencing some of them and it is not good.  Please pray that her body will adjust quickly to coming off that drug, and that she will also be able to adjust to the new drugs.  Thanks, "OLD”

Now, I’m a fat old white guy injineer who is no saint. And, I think the prayers of saints are of more worth than those of us sinners.

And, Marge is a wonderful Godly woman, salt of the earth, and a great gardener.

Your “saintly” help would be greatly appreciated.

Value Life Like We Do! Or Else!
By Jack Perry
April 19, 2016

*** begin quote ***

Gosh, I sure am glad I live in a country that values life. That must be why the cops have tanks now, too. How can you affirm life without tanks, I ask you? I mean, armored personnel carriers are nice, but nothing says “I love you” like a tank does, right? Just paint a happy face on the turret and it’s all good. Indeed, “they” don’t value life like we do. They don’t love their children, cry when their mothers die, fall in love, enjoy pizza, or smile to one another. Because if we knew that and had to admit that to ourselves, we might see that the government is lying to us about these wars. And that we, not “they”, are the ones who do not value life.

If we knew that these are human beings who want to live as much as we do, we might be compelled to make a decision: Do we value life—or not? We can’t keep blaming “them” for this violence anymore. Not when we’re part of the world that is responsible for both world wars and will probably be part of the coalition which begins the third one. Not when the United States eggs on the violence over there like it’s a mixed-martial arts cage match. “They” don’t value life like we do? Huh. Do tell.

*** end quote ***

It’s an interesting question?

More that just a moral one — as if questions about principles aren’t the questions the absolutely highest priority question we could ask — it’s a pragmatic one.

IF we value life, then why do we tolerate the “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs” that has locked up so many people for non-violent drug offenses? I abhor the impacts of drugs. But making then illegal, just drives up the cost, makes them impure killing people, and does NOTHING to discourage their use. (In fact, more than one commentator has linked the Gooferment to Organized Crime as needing each other.)

IF we value life, then why do we tolerate a Gooferment “welfare” system that destroys families, creates a permanent underclass, and destroys the motivation “to be all you can be”? (Unless you go in the Army!)

IF we value life, then why do we tolerate a Gooferment that is practicing eugenics under the guise of “helping”?

and on and on and on … … …

Bottom line: One must conclude that we don’t value life. Or peace. Or even prosperity.
