Man Saves Helpless Foal Stuck On Bridge As Mama Horse Looks On

# - # - # - # - #

It’s a simple act.

He could have ignored it.

But all life is precious.

He was so gentle and it was like Mama Horse knew it would be OK.

Of course, she could have killed him easily. At least, knocked him off the bridge.

Why can’t we treat human babies with as much compassion?

In 1988 my wife bought me a similar chair with what appears to be an inventory number of "736......1034" and the name "MANHATTAN" listed. The purchase was the result of a promotion from the college. COMMENT: Horn, William J. 'Bill' (MC1964) with some chair facts

2016-Apr-10

Horn, William J. 'Bill' (MC1964)

The chairs were sold through the alumni office and perhaps through the bookstore in the 60s and 70s. Two armchairs and a rocker were in the alumni director's office when I was assistant director and later director of alumni relations from 1967-72. They were not rare and I believe there were some in other campus locations, possibly admissions and the President's Office. I am not aware of them having been numbered, perhaps under the chair seat, but I doubt they would have been marked by hand.

[JR: More chair lore.]

JNEWS: Wanielista, Marty [MC1965] -- a jasper connection to a weight guesser

The Weight Guesser and the deep history of Rocky Glen
BY JACK SMILES, CITIZENS' VOICE CORRESPONDENT
Published: April 10, 2016

*** begin quote ***

A lot of local Baby Boomers have such fond memories of Rocky Glen, the legendary amusement park near Moosic, they feel as if they grew up there.

Marty Wanielista did.

Wanielista, 74, today a retired University of Central Florida engineering professor, was just 8 years old when he went to work at his father’s Rocky Glen concessions. His father, Martin, and his brothers and family ran games of chance, a dart game and a shooting gallery and young Marty worked them all.

*** and ***

Martin’s son, Marty, graduated from Avoca High School in 1959. His parents encouraged him to go to Scranton University where he joined ROTC. He served two years in Army Medical Service Corps, setting up waste disposal and drinking water systems for camps.

He got a master’s degree from Manhattan College and doctorate from Cornell in environmental systems.

A stormwater expert, he headed a research group at UCF that was the first to identify storm water as a pollutant. They developed a system that utilizes used tires to filter stormwater. Though retired as a full time professor, he still works as a researcher and has new patents for methods for the removal of nutrients and the reuse of stormwater.

Marty has been married 50 years to Betty Kusimerz from Dupont. They have two daughters, Marla and Victoria, an engineer and a teacher and two grandchildren.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Mrs. Flaherty

2016-Apr-12

Good Afternoon All,

Trish shared some wonderful news. Mrs. Flaherty went home this past Thursday, 4/7/16, after 3 weeks in Hospital. It has been a long road for the Family and of course more so for Trish's Mom. She was given the option to do rehab at home and that was her choice, hands down. As Trish says, hopefully being at home and around the Family will help her progress. All are so happy to have her home especially her Grandchildren who had not seen her for three weeks.

Trish, her Mom, Dad, Siblings and their extended Family all appreciate the continued prayers from their Manhattan College Community. Trish shared that both of her Mom's Brothers were Manhattan Prep and College graduates as well as Trish's younger Sister. It would seem we are stroking pretty deeply with our prayer oars. Go Mrs. Flaherty! Go Jaspers !

From Trish, once again, " Thank you for your prayers and support." Thank you. God Bless.

JNEWS: Farber, William [MC1977] a “personal quest”

Military math meets math-challenged students
By Bill Heltzel
April 14, 2016

*** begin quote ***

“The assumption is that veterans have something they bring to the table,” said William Farber, an associate professor of secondary education who is the principal investigator. “They are seasoned. They have a sense of organization and discipline.”

*** and ***

Farber described the program as a “personal quest” that combines his love of math with his respect for the military.

He served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam. He majored in math at Manhattan College and earned two master’s degrees and a doctorate in education from Columbia University. He taught junior high school math in the Bronx for a dozen years “and loved it,” and joined the Mercy College faculty in 2010.

He wrote the grant application with Arlene Zimny, director of accreditation. Nagaraj Rao, professor of mathematics, and Terri Lynn Germain-Williams, assistant professor of secondary education, are co-investigators. Brian Baldwin is program evaluator.

Farber is scouring veterans programs and local colleges for the first 10 veterans. Candidates must have a math degree or 30 hours of math credits. He also will consider veterans with degrees or at least 24 credits in related fields such as engineering, computer science and cyber security. Those candidates will take classes for six more math credits.

One pool of talent, he said, is retired military officers who are still “young and vibrant and ready to serve again.”

A Tiny Bronx Bakery Churns Out Carrot Cakes That Travel the World
By WINNIE HU  APRIL 8, 2016

2016 04Apr 15 brandon

*** begin quote ***

Betty Campbell-Adams has never made it to China, Nigeria or the Philippines — but her carrot cakes have.

From her storefront bakery in the Bronx, the dense, moist cakes have boarded planes bound for far-flung parts of the world, lugged by faithful customers who swear by them and want their family and friends to do so as well. Every couple of weeks, Ms. Campbell-Adams, who has traveled as far as Greece, hears about another journey. There have been too many to count.

“I’m going to hang up a map and put a pin in everywhere that someone tells me they’re going with my cake,” Ms. Campbell-Adams, 60, said as the sweet scent of sugar, cinnamon and baking carrots wafted through the air.

*** and ***

Standing in front of the bakery the other day, Ms. Campbell-Adams said she still chokes up when she sees people lining up for her husband’s cake. His portrait hangs on the wall of the bakery. Ms. Campbell-Adams and their two children are carrying on what he started.

Lilka, 31, a marketing manager for a television station, helps run the bakery’s social media accounts. And

Brandon, 28, who grew up delivering cakes with his father, is now the general manager.
“It’s been a part of my life for as far back as I can remember,” he said. “I know he’s happy just looking down and seeing we’re all pitching in.”

Denville Dog and Grill
APRIL 10, 2016 ~ COLLEENSICECREAMBLOG

Denville Dog and Grill/Denville Freeze

Today was the annual concrete canoe races at Cook’s Pond in Denville.  Civil Engineering students from New York and New Jersey colleges design, construct and race concrete canoes.  We love to watch the races, view the displays about the construction  and meet the students involved. The only snafu this year was that the students were not actually racing – the water was too frigid – they just had to swamp the boats to show they still floated.  The winning school was determined by the boat appearance, the construction display and an oral presentation done earlier in the week.  This year’s winner was NYU, followed by CCNY.  All the schools involved  (Fairleigh Dickinson, TCNJ, CCNY, NJIT, Manhattan College, Rowan, NYU and Rutgers) obviously put a tremendous amount of work into their projects, and I congratulate them all on a job very well done -amazing canoes, tremendous displays, great teamwork – Now we needed ice cream to complete our fun outing!

Despite all his success, Keyes decided to not pursue college ball.

“I was getting burnt out and it wasn’t fun anymore,” he said.

So after one year as a student at Manhattan College, Keyes enlisted in November 1973. He was eventually trained as a combat medic who rose to the rank of staff sergeant and served the Army all over the world.

A grandson of slaves, a boy was born in a poor neighborhood of New Orleans known as the "Back of Town." His father abandoned the family when the child was an infant. His mother became a prostitute and the boy and his sister had to live with their grandmother.

Early in life he proved to be gifted for music and with three other kids he sang in the streets of New Orleans. His first gains were coins that were thrown to them.

A Jewish family, Karnofsky, who had immigrated from Lithuania to the USA , had pity for the 7-year-old boy and brought him into their home. Initially giving 'work' in the house, to feed this hungry child.

There he remained and slept in this Jewish family's home where, for the first time in his life, he was treated with kindness and tenderness. When he went to bed, Mrs. Karnovsky sang him a Russian lullaby that he would sing with her. Later, he learned to sing and play several Russian and Jewish songs. Over time, this boy became the adopted son of this family. The Karnofskys gave him money to buy his first musical instrument; as was the custom in the Jewish families. They sincerely admired his musical talent. Later, when he became a professional musician and composer, he used these Jewish melodies in compositions, such as St. James Infirmary and Go Down Moses.

The little black boy grew up and wrote a book about this Jewish family who had adopted him in 1907. In memory of this family and until the end of his life, he wore a star of David and said that in this family, he had learned "how to live real life & determination."

You might recognize his name. This little boy was called: Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. Louis Armstrong proudly spoke fluent Yiddish! And "Satchmo" is Yiddish for "Big Cheeks"! Now you know why he wore the Star of David

I hope this story is true, because it exemplifies the Good Samaritan and all that is holy.

What a mitzvah!

Hope that I could be that charitable.

Sadly, we have so much of our wealth stolen by the various Gooferments that we lose touch with our humanity.
