POSITRACTION: Master Sgt. Roddie Edmonds "We are all Jews here."

Israel to honor late US soldier who protected Jews at Nazi POW camp
Published December 02, 2015 Associated Press

*** begin quote ***

JERUSALEM –  The Nazi soldiers made their orders very clear: Jewish American prisoners of war were to be separated from their fellow brothers in arms and sent to an uncertain fate.

But Master Sgt. Roddie Edmonds would have none of that. As the highest-ranking noncommissioned officer held in the German POW camp, he ordered more than 1,000 Americans captives to step forward with him and brazenly pronounced: "We are all Jews here."

*** and ***

It's a story that remained untold for decades and one that his son, the Rev. Chris Edmonds, only discovered long after his father's death in 1985.

Edmonds was captured with thousands of others in the Battle of the Bulge in late 1944 and spent 100 days in captivity. His son vaguely knew about his father's past from a pair of diaries Edmonds kept in captivity that included the names and addresses of his men and some of his daily thoughts.

*** end quote ***

What tremendous courage!

I don’t know what I would have done.

And, like most heroes, the story was never bragged about.

The dialogue about “war crimes” might have been just enough to save his own life.

It’s a shame that only God knows these stories. We need more examples of moral courage. Doing the right thing; no matter the cost.

Hopefully, this can inspire us to “We are all Jews here.” or "We are all Muslims here."

Remember “First they came …” is a famous statement and provocative poem attributed to pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis' rise to power and the subsequent purging of their chosen targets, group after group. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came_...

We have to remember this and that all it takes is one good person to stop evil in its tracks.

Christian Brother Robert Berger, a religious studies professor at Manhattan College, says that once upon a time, brothers were seen as extraordinary men doing an ordinary thing, since there were plenty of brothers around and Catholics typically put their way of life on a pedestal.
Today, he said, the situation is reversed; brothers now will be seen, he said, as “ordinary men doing an extraordinary ministry.”

Patterson to MSU's Class of 2015: 'Be dreamers and doers'

Special to The Dispatch
December 14, 2015 9:09:04 AM

2015 12Dec 15 Patterson

STARKVILLE -- "Please dream big," international best-selling and award-winning author James Patterson urged the more than 1,300 graduates during Friday's fall commencement ceremonies at Mississippi State University.

"Make sure you have a dream when you leave Mississippi State and have a backup dream," Patterson said. "When I was kid, right through high school and into college, my dream was to play basketball in the NBA. I could dunk. I was pretty good. It didn't happen, but I had a backup dream."

"I loved to write stories, and I went at the craft of storytelling with passion and perseverance and kind of obsessive stubbornness. My first novel was published when I was 26," he added. His fictional novels have now sold more than 300 million copies.

Currently holding the Guinness World Record for the most No. 1 New York Times best-sellers of any author and the first to achieve 10 million e-book sales, the New York native also is the first to have No. 1 new titles listed simultaneously on the Times' children's and adult best-seller lists.

"You have to work real hard at your dream and even at your backup dream," Patterson said. "I've always felt compelled to do the best that I possibly can and tell the best stories I'm capable of, especially my stories for kids."

A summa cum laude English graduate of Manhattan College and Vanderbilt University, he also has produced several popular book series for young adults.

In addition to "dreamers," Patterson also encouraged the December graduates to be "doers."

"There is so much to do right now, and please try not to be cynical about it and skeptical about it.

"You can do stuff; you really can," he emphasized.

Patterson and wife Susan Solie Patterson, who currently reside in Florida, long have been major supporters of literacy education initiatives. Earlier this year at MSU, the couple established the James Patterson Teacher Education Scholarship Endowment, with inaugural awards to eight freshman elementary education majors.

Following his address, Patterson said he and Susan plan to donate more scholarships for MSU students next year. MSU President Mark E. Keenum also declared Patterson an honorary Bulldog in recognition of his contributions, integrity and professional achievements that have set an example of excellence.

Jerry Breen — 51 mins · Sadly, my old friend Bill Seebeck died a few days ago. We never saw each other after Manhattan College in the late 60's - early 70's, but we kept in touch over the years as he went through a variety of careers, from software pioneer to clergyman. Bill was a brilliant, funny guy and a true friend. In recent years, he found it difficult to communicate because of his health problems. The news of his death was not unexpected, but it's difficult to accept nonetheless. He suffered a lot but always had the same warm, sunny disposition. He had a great soul.

JFACEBOOK: Steinberg, Robert "Bob Stei" (MC1993) gives out good advice

2015-Dec-16

Bob Stei  7 hrs · Willow Grove, PA · I forgot to mention something small but important that happened recently. A listener of mine from a past station reached out to me regarding advice about getting started in the radio industry. I answered a few questions and gave my honest advice. This person called me while I was on the air Saturday just to thank me for the advice. It's such a small but important gesture that is lost on my generation. I would like to think I have openly thanked the many people who have guided me, assisted me and did a favor for me in my twenty plus years in this biz. I have helped many people as well(the joke is Bob Stei-giving people radio careers since 1997) and at times the gratitude has not been there. Some people have gone so far to assume that I was put on this earth to give them the contacts and connections they "deserve." People, a simple thank you goes a loooong way!

JHQ: Statement on an Inclusive Community - December 17, 2015

Statement on an Inclusive Community - December 17, 2015

We, the undersigned members of the Manhattan College community, condemn Islamophobia, Arabophobia, and all forms of bigotry, racism and intolerance. We condemn the actions and words of public figures and any and all organizations who have attempted to exploit recent acts of violence to incite anti-Muslim and anti-Arab feeling in our country.

In keeping with the hallmarks of our Lasallian heritage, we respond to these deplorable outbursts by reaffirming that Manhattan College is an inclusive community. We welcome and cherish people from all ethnic groups, all faith traditions, and people of no faith. We reiterate the words of Circular 461 of the De La Salle Christian Brothers:

“The anthropological view of human nature that motivates Lasallians recognizes and dignifies every human being as being unique, unrepeatable, and educable. Discrimination based on gender, culture, religion, sexual orientation or political affiliation has no place in the Lasallian educational Mission." (3.3, Circular 461 September 2010)

“Let it be stated clearly and unambiguously that calling oneself Lasallian is not relegated only to those of the Christian faith. Many faith-filled people professing other creeds participate daily in the Lasallian educational Mission. They are a valued part of this community.” (3.13, Circular 461, September 2010)

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from, and be enriched by, the many Muslim students and scholars who are cherished members of our community. We stand together as Lasallians to oppose hate speech and to encourage respect and dignity.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Mary Catherine

2015-Dec-19

Good Afternoon All,

John Reinke has shared a prayer request from Fellow Jasper, Peter Gallaher '65 BA. Peter's message follows.

*** begin quote ***

Peter Gallaher

The past two days have not been the best two days in my life. But, that's a two six pack story. Never mind.
Anyway, of your kindness, please remember in your prayers our granddaughter Mary Catherine. She broke her ankle several weeks ago, rather severely, and has not been doing well. She is in the hospital, now, with something my daughter, her mother, says is DVT, a blood clot.

Spare a prayer for me, too. I don't have the legs I used to have for this kind of exercise.

*** end quote ***

Please keep Mary Catherine in your prayers as we pray for complete recovery from her injury, that the MDs are able to dissolve the blood clot and as they rebuild her ankle that her healing is total, free of complications. Please keep her Parents and Grandparents in
your prayers as well. Thank you. God Bless,

Phil Colon

ENDNOTE: More missing emails is very “convenient”?

STATE DEPARTMENT
State Dept. cannot find emails of Clinton IT staffer
Published December 12, 2015  FoxNews.com

*** begin quote ***

The State Department cannot find emails sent by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s IT staffer Bryan Pagliano who helped setup Clinton’s private email server, a State Department official told Fox News on Friday.

Alec Gerlach, a State Department spokesman, told Fox News investigators working on recovering Pagliano's emails from the server “have not yet located a .pst that covers the time period of Secretary’s Clinton tenure.”

Politico first reported that state officials told the Senate Judiciary Committee in a closed-door meeting they couldn’t find backup copies of Pagliano’s emails during his work under Clinton when she served as Secretary of State, according to a letter reportedly sent from committee Chairman Chuck Grassley to Secretary of State John Kerry.

Ain’t that “convenient”?

Time to start sending people to jail!

If, when I was USAF at NSA, had done one iota of what these folks have done, then I’d probably just be getting out today.

Argh!
