One of the first people to study this unusual condition was Dr
Julianne Imperato, a Cornell endocrinologist. She travelled to
this remote part of the Dominican Republic in the 1970s because of
strange rumours about girls turning into boys.
She eventually unraveled the mystery of what is going on and by
doing so helped make a surprising medical breakthrough.
At conception we all inherit a set of genes from our parents that
will, in time instruct our bodies to make us male or female. But
for the first few weeks of our lives human embryos are neither.
Instead we have a protrusion called a tubercle. If you’re
genetically male the Y chromosome instructs the gonads to become
testicles. They also send testosterone to the tubercle, where it
is converted into a potent hormone called dihydro-testosterone
This transforms the tubercle into a penis. If you’re female and
don’t make dihydro-testosterone then your tubercle becomes a
clitoris.

By a quirk of chance Dr Imperato’s research was picked up by the
American pharmaceutical giant, Merck. They used her discovery to
create a drug called finasteride, which blocks the action of
5-α-reductase. IT is now widely used to treat benign enlargement
of the prostate and male pattern baldness. For which, I’m sure,
many men are truly grateful.

When I hear all the know it all's spout off about this or that
“scientific fact”, it’s like nails on a chalkboard.
Can “we”, at least, develop a little humility about what we assert
with such juvenile certainty.
Nothing is ever as it seems and it’s certainly not what the media
tells us.
IDK (I don’t know) should be as quick to our mind as MYOB (mind
your own business)!

She is always thinking of others and how she can help them, yet never expects anything in return.
Several months ago Kim found out that the cancer had spread to her liver but that didn't stop Kim from coming to work the next day with her radiant smile. You see Kim is not only a dedicated mother and a terrific friend, she is an amazing teacher. She thinks of creative and innovative ways to inspire her students while silently suffering inside. Whenever you pass her classroom you can hear Kim leading her students in a song or a silly story about math. Kim is an inspiration to all who know her. While the cancer keeps taking from Kim' s body, she keeps on giving to others. She is always the first to volunteer to help out, whether it is school, family , friends, or various charities.
After completing the last several months of chemotherapy, Kim was dealt an even harsher blow..... The cancer has now spread to her brain. Kim is unable to work at the moment due to the immediate need for intense daily radiation treatments on top of her already debilitating chemotherapy. These treatments come at a hefty cost even with medical insurance, We want to raise money so that Kim can concentrate on her health instead of worrying about the financial burden this disease is putting on her husband and her two young boys. Kim has had such a positive impact on all who know her. Let's make a postive impact on Kim!

My brother bishops, Good morning.
I carry engraved in my heart the stories of suffering and pain of the minors who were sexually abused by priests. I remain overwhelmed by shame that those persons who were charged with the tender care of these little ones violated them and caused them great harm.
I lament it profoundly. God weeps. The crimes and sins of sexual abuse of minors cannot be kept secret any longer. I commit myself to the zealous watchfulness of the church to protect minors and I promise that all those responsible will be held accountable.
The survivors of abuse have become true heralds of hope and ministers of mercy. Humbly, we owe each of them and their families our gratitude for their immense courage in making Christ’s light to shine upon the evil of sexual abuse of children.
I say this because I have just met with a group of persons abused as children, who are helped and accompanied here in Philadelphia with a special care by Archbishop Chaput. It seemed necessary to communicate this to you.

I have been trying to write about Fr. Corry since Saturday. Nothing is coming close to doing this mentor, friend and honorary member of our family justice. I decided a glimpse or two over the next couple of days as we say farewell might work better.So today, just my senior year religion class.
I took Christian Humanism with Fr. Corry in senior year--a life-changing class. We read St. Augustine, CS Lewis, and Brideshead Revisted, just to name a few. We listened to music from Bruce Springsteen to opera. We had extra credit assignments which brought us to the top of the Empire State Building at night, and through it all Fr. Corry taught us we could find God there. He taught us to question, reason, and write. He taught us to think, but never forget to feel.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan College women’s basketball team will be featured on ESPN3 twice during the 2015-16 season, and both contests will take place at Draddy Gymnasium. Manhattan’s home games against Saint Peter’s (Jan. 21) and Monmouth (Feb. 11) were both selected as a part of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) broadcast package.
This marks the first time since a matchup with Marist on Jan. 25, 2013, that the Manhattan women’s team will have a home game shown on ESPN3. The Jaspers have never previously had two contests at Draddy Gymnasium broadcast nationally in the same season.
“It’s extremely exciting that we’ll get to play a couple games on our new green court on ESPN3,” Head Coach John Olenowski said. “I’m also happy about being able to play with the men’s team on these nights. Hopefully we’ll have a large crowd at both games.”
Both games will start at 5 p.m. and immediately precede a contest involving the two-time defending MAAC champion Manhattan men’s team. The Jasper men take on Monmouth (Jan. 21) and Quinnipiac (Feb. 11) at 8 p.m. each night, with both of those games also being broadcast on ESPN3.

When Perry Rizopoulos was 11 years old, his grandfather, Pericles Rizopoulos, sat him down and showed him an old book. The volume was about 200 pages long, all handwritten. It contained an account of how the older Mr. Rizopoulos and his family survived World War II in their home country of Greece, including his capture by Nazi soldiers as he and his brother were trying to bring home wheat for his family. BACKGROUND—Robert Monahan grew up in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. He graduated from the LaSalle Academy and Manhattan College, then returned to LaSalle as a science teacher, educating young men in earth science, physical science and biology. After marrying his wife in 1974, they relocated to Glendale and raised a family of three. They now have six grandsons, with two more on the way.
Monahan took a job at the Greater Ridgewood Youth Council (GRYC) while teaching at LaSalle; both positions wound up being full-time jobs for him. “I would teach at LaSalle, then come out to the youth council and work from 3 to 10 p.m.,” he said. “I did that for a year, then the executive director of the GRYC left, and I was promoted to that position.”
OCCUPATION—Monahan first served as GRYC executive director from 1982 to 1990, then moved on to the Police Athletic League for 10 years. Since returning to the GRYC in 2000, Monahan helped grow the organization into a borough-wide juggernaut. Today, the GRYC—powered by an $8 million annual budget—offers after-school activities, tutoring, internships and other programs at 30 different locations to 2,700 youths across Queens.
“We’re as far out as Rosedale and Bayside and as close as our Ridgewood headquarters, where we have UPK [universal pre-kindergarten],” he said. The organization has been “blessed” to receive support from local elected officials through the years to help grow the GRYC into what it is today.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT—Outside of the GRYC, Monahan is primarily involved with the Kiwanis Club of Glendale, a chapter of Kiwanis International, which raises funds for local and global causes aimed at improving the lives of children everywhere. In the past, he served as chair of the Glendale Kiwanis Scholarship Committee, which hands out thousands of dollars in scholarships annually to middle and high school students toward higher education. Monahan is also a member of the Knights of Columbus and previously supported the Ronald McDonald House. He is also involved with Cursillo, a spiritual religious retreat program for young adults.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE—Though grateful for the support that has helped grow the GRYC by leaps and bounds over the last decade, Monahan said the biggest challenge he faces is acquiring even greater funds to serve more youths throughout Queens. “We could probably serve 5,000 kids a day if we had additional funding,” he said. “We have waiting lists everywhere. Our biggest challenge is to be able to service all the kids that need service and their families.”
Help is on the way for the GRYC as the organization—through funds allocated from local officials—aims to open a state-of-the-art youth center next year at the former Garity Post on Fairview Avenue in Ridgewood.
BIGGEST INSPIRATION— “Obviously, my family is my biggest inspiration,” Monahan said. “I try to bring that whole atmosphere to the youth council, so my staff and the accomplishments they achieve every day is over the edge for me. It’s a blast coming to work for me.”

Obituary
Mrs. Emma Jean Davis, one of Westchester County, New York's most distinguished and respected educators, musicians and community advocates, passed away peacefully after a long illness on September 25, 2015 in Weston, Florida.
Born in Mount Vernon, NY, she was the second child of the late Elleana May and William Augustus Chavers, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 55 years, Charles Marvin Davis, as well as two sisters (Evelyn Chavers Hawks and Willimay Chavers) and a brother (William Augustus Chavers, Jr.). She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Ricky Bernard William Davis, Sr. (Rosalind Victoria ) of Stamford, CT and Shaun Marvin Davis (Tanya Yvette) of Weston, FL, five grandchildren (Rachel (Tavaras), Sinecio (Kari), Ricky Jr., Shauna and Ashley), two great-grandchildren (Cristian and Taylor), her two best friends Eloise Davis and Edmonia Snipe, both of Mount Vernon, NY, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
"Blossom", a childhood nickname given to her because of her bright disposition and bubbly personality, joined the Macedonia Baptist Church (Mount Vernon) at a very early age and actively participated in the Sunday School, B.T.U. and Junior choir. She received her undergraduate degree in Education from Hunter College in the Bronx and two masters' degrees from Hunter College and Manhattan College, respectively.
Mrs. Davis taught in the Mount Vernon school system for a total of twenty three years, and thereafter was promoted to Assistant Principal at A.B. Davis Middle School where she served in that capacity for eleven years until her retirement in 1998. During this time, she was credited with, among other things, the creation of a mentoring program that pairs members of the business and professional community with "at risk" youth to provide them with advice, guidance and much needed adult role models.
Mrs. Davis' passion for music is widely known, and she served as Music Director at numerous churches throughout lower Westchester County and the Bronx during her life. She was honored as Director of Music Emeritus of the Grace Baptist Church on Dyre Avenue in the Bronx.
She was also strongly committed to the advancement of African American women and the uplifting and betterment of African American youth, as evidenced by her leadership of and involvement in numerous women's and youth organizations. To this end, Mrs. Davis founded the Tri-County Women's Club, Tri-County Young Adult Club and Tri-County Youth Club and also served in numerous community service organizations including the Women's Welfare Club of Mount Vernon and the High C's, and is past Eastern Regional Scholarship Chairperson of the National Association of Negro Musicians. She was the last living Charter Member of the Westchester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., which was chartered in 1959.
Mrs. Davis received numerous honors and recognitions over the years including, amongst others, the Mount Vernon School District's Outstanding Service Employee Award and the Mayor's Award.
Viewing (8-10 am) and services (10 am - 12 pm) will be held at Macedonia Baptist Church, 141 S. 9th Avenue, Mount Vernon, NY (914-667-2333) on Saturday, October 3, 2015. The services have been entrusted to Camelot Funeral Home, 174 Stevens Avenue, Mount Vernon, NY 10550. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made payable to The Emma Jean Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund and sent to the Tri-County Women's Club, PO Box 3837, Mount Vernon, NY 10550.

I was saddened to learn of CAPT Mark's passing. I work in the Pentagon (same floor and corridor) and I would see CAPT Mark all time. Every time I saw John he had a smile on his face. Although we did not know each other personally we had a special routine of smiling, saying "Good morning / afternoon" and asking each other how was the weekend :) He was very friendly. I only knew John for a short time but he made a world of difference to me. Capt. Mark and Hayley attended a training conference in DC this past August. Prior to the conference, he contacted me, offering any assistance he could from the Washington area. He would check in with me continuously to see if he could assist in any way. During the week of the conference, John gave me a flag he had flown over the Pentagon. I will remember you forever.

I first met John as an OBC classmate and our paths crossed numerous times in the JAG Corps, as I replaced him as the Senior Defense Counsel at Fort Huachuca. I had the great fortune to serve as one of John's vice presidents of the Student Bar Association during our third year at Law school. He beat out one of my closest friends to win that year, and I was prepared to dislike him for having beaten her, which was both completely unfair and completely impossible. John was quite possibly the most genuine person I have ever known. Even in times when I saw him frustrated by roadblocks or red tape he never failed to be positive and kind about every situation. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to have been even just a very brief part of his life. I am not exaggerating when I say that humanity has suffered a blow at the loss of him. I had the great joy of working with John at Fort Huachuca. His smile was amazing, and he made the office better because he was a part of it. He was the only JAG who volunteered in the Buffalo Soldier riding unit. They staged a "charge" across the parade ground as part of most ceremonies. He and his horse Wyatt were never first, but were a lot of fun to watch. John was a good, loving, funny and smart man. He must have had an amazing family to raise such a great man. "Look at this guy!" From John's Fonzi the lie-detector dog story, to calling the Kuwait Courtroom "America," during a Court-Martial, his stories just never ended. HIs was the kindest, funniest, most reliable friend one could have. I still remember the day we picked him up at Ali Al Saleem, where we first met, and it was like we had known each other for ever. His presence made everyone a better person. He was a man of honor, a man who would not let a bad moment ruin his day, and a wrong situation ruin a friendship. Sir- You were only in my life for a short amount of time, yet the grief I feel at your passing feels as though we've been friends for longer. You were an amazing Soldier and Officer and it was privilege being able to know you. Rest In Peace.
