Body of 5-year-old who vanished from Grand Canyon-area campsite found

*** begin quote ***

Some volunteers walked shoulder-to-shoulder through thick vegetation in heavy rain Monday in hopes of finding clues.

Authorities said earlier that there were no signs of an abduction or foul play and noted that the boy's parents were devastated by the disappearance and remained involved throughout the search.

*** end quote ***

That’s inspiring that “volunteers” will set aside their pursuits to find a little child. And, it’s not like it was a stroll in the park. More like a trek! With a sad end.

That’s being ones “brother’s keeper”! It’s our common humanity.

Sad that he was lost.

But, good that there was no “foul play”. Just an accident.

Hope the parents can find peace.

JFACEBOOK: Daley, Lisa [MC1993] is feeling accomplished; rightly so

Lisa Daley feeling accomplished
2 hrs · Edited

It was a monumental feat that I decided to undertake after completing school and my boards in March 2015. I am immensely proud of myself for taking almost 2.5 years off from training and competing, losing the 25 pounds I gained during school, and still being able to make the finals of the W45 400 m at the World Masters Championship in Lyon, France. I have to give special thanks to some people who have helped me on this journey including my mum, Marie Kay, Renee Henderson, Kirstin King , Marcus Skeete, and " Lesleigh's Ladies". My biggest thanks goes to my coach Gilbert Sanders and God. Both have been the solid rock on which I stand.

JBLOGGER: Rodriguez, Vincent [MC1984] versus Myrtle Beach Parking Meters

Myrtle Beach and Parking Meters

Rodriguez, Vincent [MC1984]

*** begin quote ***

I called the Myrtle Beach police department and told them I would like to speak to Officer Smith and explained why. First, in my anger I actually dialed 911 and ranted about what had taken place. 911 transferred me, so somewhere in South Carolina there is a recording of me ranting about getting a parking ticket on tape. I had to leave a message for Officer Smith who did call me back the next day and told me to just drop off the ticket at the precinct and he would take care of it. However, I listened to him in the first place which is how I got into this predicament to begin with.

So I did go to the police department, dropped off the ticket, put it to his attention, and hoped for the best. The next day, I received a voicemail from Officer Smith saying not to worry about it, he had taken care of it. The bottom line is I am expecting that in 60 days I will receive a notice in the mail that I owe the city of Myrtle Beach $60.

COMMENT: Kuhn, Rob (MC1973) accuses me of leaping on the crank-opinion bandwagon

2015-Aug-16

John,

In relation to your 8/16 ENDNOTE: Some folks report the news, others make it up. Beware of the latter. It seems you have failed this pop quiz in relation to your source for the shift to "climate change" from "global warming." And -- regardless of your opinion about the science -- shame on a Manhattan engineer for leaping on the crank-opinion bandwagon when there is legitimate historical information available on the subject of the terminology in this debate and how and why its usage has evolved. "Global warming" did come first, in 1957; "climate change" followed, but not recently - it appeared in 1957; and "global climate change" -- far too cumbersome for the media -- is presently the most accurate scientific characterization. Maybe LewRockwell and Eric Peters think "climate change" is "new" because they haven't been interested for that long in the quality of the air they breathe and the water they are fortunate to still be able to drink? Maybe it has taken Fox News to alert them to the fact that there's a political hot potato they can play with by bruiting their opinions around as fact. Here's a nutshell and research from NASA (not the U.N.): http://pmm.nasa.gov/education/articles/whats-name-global-warming-vs-climate-change

Rob Kuhn '73

[JR: I remember when “we were all going to freeze" in 70’s. The answer, of course, more Gooferment regulation. Then, it was “we were all going to burn up” until some inconvenient facts showed up. Not the least was the “scientific” folks were cooking the books! Now it’s “climate change”. And, of course, the only thing that can save us is more Gooferment regulation. And, yes, I like clean air and clean water, but you have to snicker at the Gooferment EPA polluting the rivers in three states by tampering with an abandoned gold mine. Guess we just need more Gooferment regulation. Sorry, there is a trend here of the political class — R’s and D’s — to herd the shepple to the slaughterhouse. So we’re we food once by “global cooling” and now “climate change”? Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. And, btw, last time I looked NASA was the Gooferment agency that can’t seem to get out of its own way. So, of course, its bureaucrats echo the party line. Sigh! Can’t wait to see if the prediction of Old Farmer’s Almanac comes true. A heavy snow fall is obviously climate change. Argh!]

Bob Kuhn response regarding of jj jumping on the crank opinion bandwagon is precisely the reason the debate is so worthless . Sarcasm is still the cheapest form of humor. The fact is that even the scientific method has changed with the emergence of Big Data and few have the background, subject matter experience and High Performance computing skills to deal with a possible laboratory to look deeply into the problem I don’t and neither does the Pope but I guess I can forgive him…he didn't claim excathedra.

In 1988, 29-year-old Nicholas Wasicsko took office in the city of Yonkers. He defeated Angelo R. Martinelli, the six-term Republican most identified with the struggles over court-ordered integration of affordable housing in the city, to become the youngest mayor in the country. He was a “young professional with a new image,” he told the New York Times, which set him apart from his older opponents, even though their positions were not that different. A product of the public school system in Yonkers, he paid his way through four years at Manhattan College by working at a factory, spent a year as a police officer, and had already gained a seat on the City Council before he became mayor. Five years later, Wasicsko was found dead in Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers, where his father was buried, with a gunshot wound to the head, an apparent suicide. He was 34 years old.

What happened next?

After 16 years as a first grade teacher, I was sent to Manhattan College to get a master's degree in religious studies. As soon as I started classes there, I was assigned to teach religion in one of our high schools. After teaching 6-year-olds for so long, those 14-year-olds looked like 40-year-olds! I told my professor, Gabriel Moran, "I am a first grade teacher and they're sending me to high school!" His reply was that being a first grade teacher was the best preparation for teaching high school students.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Thomas A. Tormey, 101, of Grant City, a retired FDNY firefighter, World War II veteran and family man known as an outstanding athlete, died Tuesday at home.

The lifelong Staten Islander was born in Tompkinsville, he grew up in West Brighton and graduated from Port Richmond High School, where he played on the varsity baseball team.

He received a scholarship to play baseball at Manhattan College in the Bronx, but had to decline to go to work to help support his family. He worked for the WPA (Work Projects Administration), and participated in building the lake house at Clove Lakes Park. He also worked for the city Department of Welfare.

Mr. Tormey then served as a petty officer first class in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, stationed aboard boats patrolling the eastern coast of the United States.

After his military service, he joined the FDNY, where he had a 34-year career assigned to Engine Co. 152 in Rosebank. He retired in 1976.

After he and Virginia Monks wed in 1947, they settled in Grant City.

Mr. Tormey was proud of his Irish heritage and often recited Irish poems and sonnets from memory at family gatherings.

He enjoyed ballroom dancing and was a member and past president of the Staten Island Ballroom Dancers. He also enjoyed ice skating. He loved to sing and had been a soloist at many churches. He also was a talented artist and worked in calligraphy, drawing and painting.

As a young man, he was a baseball hitting and fielding champion on the Island and was a member of the Staten Island Baseball Oldtimers, and had been called the "Galloping Ghost" in an Advance article.

Mr. Tormey played on many Island baseball teams, including Bill Canlon's Travelers and FDNY and Coast Guard teams. He was selected by Bill Terry of the former New York Giants baseball team to play center field at an exhibition game for the 60th anniversary of the National Baseball League in the former Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan.

"Born in 1914, my father outlived most of his generation, yet he still had hundreds of friends. He had a strong moral compass, unshakable faith and was utterly dependable. He loved his family and will deeply missed by all who knew him," said, his daughter, Elizabeth Tormey.

A devout Catholic, Mr. Tormey was a longtime parishioner of St. Christopher's R.C. Church, Grant City, where he was a daily communicant and a past president of the Holy Name Society.

Virginia, his wife of 58 years, died in 2005.

In addition to his daughter, Elizabeth, surviving are his sons, Thomas and Michael; his daughters, Mary-Deirdre Coraggio and Virginia T. Friedman; his brother, Richard; his sister, Delores Smith, and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Christopher's Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.

Into the Deep End of the Pool: The Making of an Engineer
08/24/2015
By Charles H. Thornton

One of LZA's approaches to management involved pushing young employees into the deep end of the pool, encouraging them to take initiative and work within controlled risks. Most of the key staff when I joined were in their early to mid-20s and were from Manhattan College. Vincent DeSimone was essentially running the office by 1964, and the best structural engineer was James Chaplin. Chaplin was older and had an uncanny ability to cut back a structure in the pre-computer days. We ended up designing the World's Fair pavilions, at least five of which had structural systems that had never been done before.

Monday, Nov. 16, 7 p.m.: Marion Kaplan, Ph.D. will deliver the eighth annual Frederick M. Schweitzer Lecture, entitled Jewish Women and Families during Kristallnacht. The Skirball Professor of Modern Jewish History at New York University, Kaplan’s research focuses on Jewish women’s history and the history of Jewish daily life in Germany.

SAN FRANCISCO — Lizette Richardson has been appointed as superintendent of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, a large and heavily visited park that straddles the border between Nevada and Arizona.

*** and ***

Richardson worked at Lake Mead National Recreation Area from November 2004 to June 2013 as the chief of maintenance and engineering. In this role, she was responsible for the planning, design, construction, and oversight of many varied projects, including more than $200 million in funding for park infrastructure improvements and visitor enhancements, as well as day-to-day park maintenance operations. She also served as the acting superintendent at Joshua Tree National Park in 2010, where she oversaw operations for the 790,000-acre park.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges in protecting the world-class resources at Lake Mead National Recreation Area,” said Richardson. “I feel truly blessed to be able to come back to the park where I started my NPS career and work with such a dedicated, professional team.

“It’s an exciting time with the NPS centennial right around the corner, and I also look forward to working with the community, partners, and stakeholders, as well as the newly established park, Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, and Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument.”

Prior to coming to the National Park Service, Richardson was a project manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where she was responsible for multi-million dollar civil works projects, including a $344 million flood control project. Richardson has managed several offices at U.S. Air Force installations and has also worked as an engineer in the private sector for Holmes and Narver and TRW, Inc. She holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Nevada.

ENDNOTE: Moore, William 'Bill' [MC1977] on the Fox 'debate'

Reflections on the Republican Debates

*** begin quote ***

I use two examples of what I consider "Gotcha" questions. The first was designed to put Trump on the spot and change people's opinion of him. There was no reason to have a show of hands to discuss Trump's non decision on supporting whoever gets the nomination. A simple question asking him if he has changed his view would have been both proper and respectful. Again it was not the question but how it was done. A similar type question and follow up was put to Walker about standing there watching a woman die rather than allowing her to have an abortion. It would have been appropriate to ask him to defend his belief on not allowing abortions to save a mother's life. Again, not the question but how it was framed. Trump then was hit again about his descriptive comments referencing certain women and his "War on Women". Again designed to attack him and not get information to share with the audience. I do not support his comments back to Kelly but if he is attacked he will respond. What I found funny was in the after the debate discussion Kelly, who attacks most guests she disagrees with without mercy on her show, stated she felt his response was a threat. Does "Do on to others etc…….." have any ring in her ear?

[JR: I think our fellow Jasper has an excellent and perceptive view of the results. I didn’t watch the circus, because I felt it would be a waste of my time. And, I have so little left on this earth I don’t want to waste it. That being said, in full disclosure, I have contributed to Carly Fiorina’s campaign. It’s time for a real outsider to take on Washington. She can’t do any worse than Jimmy Carter. It’s time to winnow the field. 17 is way to many candidates to try and compare. Hopefully, “common sense” will begin to trim the “ego trips”, long shots, and also rans.]
