POSITRACTION: ALS diagnosis spurs further actions

    2015-Jul-12

    RARE DISEASES
Longtime ABC11 anchor raises awareness, funds for ALS research following diagnosis
By Melinda Carstensen Published June 29, 2015 FoxNews.com

    *** begin quote ***

Longtime news anchor Larry Stogner always made a point to raise money for difficult medical conditions, but little did he know he would one day be diagnosed with one.

During the 39 years that Stogner, 68, reported for Raleigh, N.C.’s ABC11-WTVD, he participated in the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In 2014 he took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which went viral and helped the ALS Association raise over $115 million in donations for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research.

“I interviewed a lot of ALS patients along the way, and I would always come away saying, ‘Jeez, I’m glad I’m not that guy.’ And now, I am that guy,” Stogner, who served as the station’s evening news anchor for about 32 years, told FoxNews.com.

    *** end quote ***

It’s an inspiring story that shows a fellow courageously facing a death prognosis and yet “helping”.

And, it relates all the smart people trying to find a cure or ameliorate the symptoms and effects.

Sadly, not much we can do but pray for cure and raise money. (Although I do disagree with lobbying the Gooferment for funding. Private charity will solve it fast and cheaper than the Gooferment EVER could. Note how long research takes with Gooferment funding.)

I’m adding Larry to my prayer list and hope you’ll all do the same.

History Publishing to Enter Children’s World, Begins with Illustrated Story of The Statue of Liberty
Publisher of history books for adults is entering publishing for childen with a series of illustrated books focusing on the sites and monumets that are pillars of American development..

“The mission of Libby Books is to acquaint children with the basic facts of America which are manifested so well in all the monuments and historic sites across the nation,”

    Palisades,NY (PRWEB) July 13, 2015

History Publishing Company is entering the market for children’s books with an illustrated history of The Statue of Liberty. HPC will be acting as distributor for Libby’s Books LLC, a new company that will be focusing on the monuments and historical places in the United States. Each 5” by 8 ”book, containing twenty four pages that are illustrated panels, will tell the story of the subject monument or sites, how it or they came to be, their meanings and, in illustrated detail, will explain any inscriptions or carvings on the subject edifice. Each page will feature Libby, a little dog that accompanied the Statue from France and will appear in all future editions as Libby is “off to see America.”

The illustrations in The Statue of Liberty are by international designer Simone Eisold and the crafted text by D.J. Bracken. Simone Eisold is a graduate of the University of Pforzheim’s School of Design in Germany. She has held executive positions in fashion in Rome and New York. D.J. Bracken writes of matters of history under his full name Donagh J. Bracken. He is a graduate of Manhattan College and the author of "The Words of War" contrasting "New York Times" and "Charleston Mercury" coverage of the same battles during the Civil War. He is also the publisher of History Publishing Company

“The mission of Libby Books is to acquaint children with the basic facts of America which are manifested so well in all the monuments and historic sites across the nation,” said Ms. Eisold. “We have elected to bring a modicum of entertainment into the books which should provide an element of delight for the child reading the book,” she added. “Libby will be on a road trip across this great nation and I am sure the delight Libby experiences will be passed on to the children reading a Libby Book.” The first Libby Book "The Statue of Liberty" will be in the HPC warehouse July 20.

    317 days to go!

    *** begin quote ***

After circling Baxter Boulevard with our mutual friend and eventual match-maker, Jennifer Harder, Steph found herself standing at my kitchen table. She was completely unprepared to meet her future husband, hair disheveled and her ensemble replete with dusty shoes, grungy t-shirt, and yoga pants – and this was before yoga pants were sexy or cool. As beautiful as I considered Steph even then, she has taken her trend-setting to the next level and worn only pajamas and fuzzy-socks ever since. (A pajama deal with Lulu Lemon is already in the works.) Incidentally, I find her most radiant in this garb, as it represents the contentedness and warmth-of-spirit that shapes her personality. She is my "Cozy Monster" and my best friend. We have so much fun together that we sometimes get downright weird, in a crazy-cat-people sort of way, which is to say nothing of the stuffed animals that we treat like real children. She is an eternal wellspring of laughter and kindheartedness that has bettered me in every way. It's a miracle that she agreed to marry me, so let's get down to business and get this ceremony underway!

Over the last several years, we have made a humble and rewarding life together in Portland, Maine, most recently on the re-emergent Eastern Promenade. We lucked-out with a "fixer-upper" apartment in a beautiful seaside neighborhood and have shared our daily lives, dreams, and ambitions with one another, while building our respective careers. After four years together, we steal each other's every thought, bearing testament to just how well we know each other: well enough to say, "I DO".

In April, among the secluded trees atop Montreal's highest peak and namesake, Mount Royal, I knelt before Steph, in reverence and humility, to ask her hand in marriage. I went to great pains to keep the "how and when" secret from her, so she was genuinely surprised and completely blown-away when I proposed. Yet without hesitation and bearing immediate tears of astonishment and joy, she said, "Of course, Benny!" We shared an unforgettable moment that will always remind of us how powerful it is to surrender and commit to another human being completely and unconditionally. Altogether, it was an amazing weekend on the island of Montreal, and we will forever remember this amazing city as the formal origin of our lives together.

It would be remiss of me not to mention that we even adopted our first child, Ava, who bears the "Felus Catus" crest, better known as "Common House Cat". Despite her lineage, she is anything but common and is preparing us well for anxiety-inducing children who stay out all night and don't call home.

I pushed for a speech at my own wedding, but was pooh-poohed unanimously, so this is my only shot. Those closest to me know that I'm a workaholic with a disposition that swings like a wrecking ball. (Thanks, Grampy Buster! 'Preciate it!) When I'm not glued to my computer in seclusion, I am tolerable only in trace amounts, ranting and rambling on subjects that sane people don't find interesting. Or screaming out the car window at negligent pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists – "You're TRAFFIC, you jerk!" (as some bicyclist passes on the left and then blows through a red light without slowing-down). Given the above, I am deeply thankful that Steph appreciates the rare instances in which I say something surprisingly sweet, or muster an unprecedented gesture of loving-kindness that makes my appreciation for her known. Steph has sacrificed countless hours of our time together to give me the latitude to do what I do best: hunch over a keyboard. Whether I'm working on my community-centric music website, or otherwise burning the midnight oil, she is patient and supportive. I am forever indebted to her grace in that regard, and can only hope to be the same pillar of encouragement and support in her life.

It is with tremendous honor and sincerity that we share our "Wedding Story" with you! Each and every one of you has been a driving-force in one or both of our lives, and we now consider you to be family! Surprise – you're stuck with us!

Kritter Bug and I met my freshman year of college. After having trouble connecting with my initial roommate from Long Beach, California, Kritty was my saving grace at Manhattan College. I knew we would be best friends as she seemed to tolerate my odd-humor and appreciate my "weird quirks". When I witnessed her sneak a fully-loaded bagel in to her purse from the cafeteria for a midnight snack, I knew that she's a girl after my own heart. Shortly thereafter, both of our "odd" roommates became best friends, allowing us to switch rooms and be roommates after 1st semester. During Junior year we finally moved to an off-campus apartment together and rejoiced in painting and furnishing our "first place" as grownups. Anyone who can tolerate sharing a tiny bedroom with two double beds and two desks crammed on top of each other for two years is someone special. Kritty now lives in upstate New York by her family after having just moved home from the big city. P.S. If you're ever in Albany, take a short trip to Troy and visit her family's absolutely "delish" Italian restaurant, "Testo's" – I highly recommend the ziti and meatballs : )

Stephen Scalia, an advertising executive who won acclaim with his partner for restoring their French Quarter home and garden, died Wednesday (July 17) at his home. He was 91.

A New York City native who spent most of his life in New Orleans, Mr. Scalia graduated from Manhattan College. When he served in the Army during World War II, he was based at Versailles as an aide to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the supreme allied commander in Europe, and his staff, said Peter Murphy, Mr. Scalia's nephew.

"He was able to get into Paris when it was liberated" in August 1944, Murphy said.

When Mr. Scalia moved to New Orleans after the war, Murphy said that he worked in advertising, first for Arthur Advertising and then for his own company, Scalia Advertising.

Henri Schindler, a neighbor, said that Mr. Scalia's clients included Mike Persia's Chevrolet dealership, for which he created a man in a fez who beat a drum and kept repeating, "Get your Chevrolet from Persia, Mike Persia Chevrolet."

Mr. Scalia moved into an apartment in the residential compound at 618-20 Gov. Nicholls Street. In 1960, he and Milton Melton, who also had an apartment there, pooled their resources to buy both buildings and started restoring them.

They were historic. One was a Creole townhouse built in 1828 that had been the home of a sister-in-law of the politician Henry Clay. The other building, which was built in 1871, had been owned by St. Louis Cathedral and housed the Notre Dame Academy of the Sacred Heart in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

"The property was falling apart," Mr. Scalia said in a 2004 interview in The Times-Picayune. To raise money for the renovation, they rented out apartments.

The restored house and gardens appeared in the books "The Secret Gardens of the Vieux Carré: The Historic French Quarter of New Orleans" and "New Orleans: Elegance and Decadence," as well as in magazines such as House Beautiful and Southern Living.

In addition to using the compound as the site for the annual parties of the Vieux Carré Property Owners, Residents and Associates Inc. and the Patio Planters organization, the men invited tourists in off the streets to show off what had become regarded as an oasis.

"One of the great rewards is to show our garden to out-of-towners who can't believe the serenity behind the walls when there's such a cacophony of T-shirt shops," Mr. Scalia said in the interview.

The men's work was recognized. The Vieux Carré Commission presented an honor award for the two buildings in 1980, and in 1986, it cited Mr. Scalia and Melton for their achievement in conceiving and maintaining their garden.

In 2004, the two men received the Elizebeth T. Werlein Medal, the commission's highest honor, which recognizes distinguished contributions toward preserving New Orleans' oldest neighborhood.

    Melton died in 2011.

Mr. Scalia was an officer of the Community Concerts Association, and he was one of the original benefactors of the National World War II Museum.

His survivors include a sister, Mary Helen Petrere of New York City.

A Mass will be said Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Louis Cathedral. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m.

Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery.

Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ENDNOTE: Moore, William 'Bill' [MC1977] on SCOTUS Gay Marriage Decision

    2015-Jul-07

    http://www.beaufortobserver.net/Articles-NEWS-and-COMMENTARY-c-2015-07-06-278700.112112-A-rational-look-at-the-SCOTUS-gay-marriage-decision.html

    From The Right
    July 07, 2015
A Rational Look at the SCOTUS Gay Marriage Decision

Now that some time has passed since the gay Marriage Decision by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), we need to discuss the decision rationally. There has been a great deal of talk on both sides predicting the far reaching results of the decision. IN addition, both sides are guilty of fear mongering.

SCOTUS ruled gay people would be allowed to marry in every state of the land. Let's discuss the facts involved:

    • 37 states already allow it (counting the District of Columbia). Leaving 14 which do not.

    • By not having a uniform law, questions would arise about the legality of gay marriage if you moved from a state which allowed it to a state that did not. Are they married? Can they divorce?

    • Everyone agreed that gay couples needed equal protection from laws such as hospital visitation where only immediate family was at times allowed to visit. Often their significant other was not allowed visiting rights since they were not married nor related.

    • Gay couples were often ignored in estates where no will was drawn up and one person died.

    • Federal or states benefits to spouses were denied

    • For years the Right has argued for Civil Unions where those rights could be guaranteed.

    • All this part of the decision requires is all state governments issue civil marriage licenses or legal civil unions.

The second part of the decision specifically allows all religious leaders the right to refuse to marry gay couples. However if a religious group allows gay marriage, they are free to perform the ceremony. No religious priest, minister, or rabbi can be required to marry a gay couple if it violates the tenets of their religion.

What remains unanswered is can an individual refuse service to a gay couple if it violates their religious beliefs. Remember we are not talking about serving you in the store but maybe catering a wedding or similar event. Should a person whose religious beliefs are against gay marriage be forced to participate in a gay marriage ceremony? SCOTUS will have to rule on his aspect in the next year or two. Lower courts are all over the place on this issue. In one state a court has heavily fined a bakery, forcing it to close, for its refusal to provide a wedding cake to a gay marriage reception.

Yet SCOTUS has stated in a decision with Hobby Lobby they could not be forced to provide certain parts of the healthcare law to its employees because it violated their religious beliefs. Though not exactly the same issue, the principle is the same.

Now it is time for both sides of the argument to tone down the rhetoric. The Left needs to stop pushing the issue and respect people of Faiths beliefs though different from theirs. Time to stop the bigot calling, hater calling, homo -phobic name calling and intimidation actions for those for whom you disagree.

Those of us on the Right need to accept the fact Gay Marriage/ Unions are now the law of the land and be thankful our religious rights for ministers or pastors were not diminished by forcing them to perform gay marriages they do not support based on religious ideology. Again if a religious group supports gay marriages it must be accepted as their faith.

As far as I am concerned the difference between the State Marriage/ Union license and one performed by a religious leader is the blessing of GOD on that marriage. It was Jesus who stated give to Caesar (the state) what is Caesars and to God what is Gods. In a family of Faith a marriage blessed by God is all that matters.

    Moore, William 'Bill' [MC1977]

[JR: While I agree about stopping the name calling and find peaceful ways to live together. I, for one, as a little L libertarian, would like the Gooferment out of the “marriage licensing” business together. The system corrupts people by giving preferential treatment to those who kowtow to the Gooferment, politicians, and bureaucrats! It’s humiliating and subservient behavior. Like begging for a pittance from the Elite. Argh! A civil society needs “governance”; it doesn’t need an instrusive OverLord who rewards the sheep and punishes the contentious objectors. This is a perfect time as is being proposed by a Texas legislator to end marriage licensing completely. It the Confederate flag is racist, then how is marriage licensing not? Argh!]
