POSITRACTION: An Engineer’s Simple Solution for African Girls Dropping Out

2015-Jun-21

The Feminine Reason for African Girls Dropping Out, An Engineer’s Simple Solution
by Good News Network - May 28, 2015

*** begin quote ***

Many girls in the Western world use their period as an excuse to sit out of gym class–but in some African countries a girl’s monthly cycle forces her out of school altogether.

Diana Sierra was already empowering women in Africa and South America, working as an industrial engineer on innovative cookstoves and food processors that would make their lives better. But when she visited Uganda and found girls there dropping out of school, she trained her problem-solving prowess on the lack of feminine pads.

*** and ***

While designing the product she worked closely with African girls who told her they wanted something colorful, girly and beautiful. It was a poignant reminder that no matter someone’s income level, people want beautiful things.

“It is our job as designers to serve this population with the same attention to aesthetics as we do with any other user segment.”

Beginning today, Plan USA is offering everyone in the world the chance to help girls in Africa by donating two pairs of the panty-pads for an $11 contribution.

*** end quote ***

I was attracted to this story because, as a fat old white guy injineer, I know engineers like to think of themselves as “problem solvers”.

Not every problem is obvious; not every solution requires a Gooferment solution.

If humans are challenged, some one of the species can solve it.

When you think outside of that proverbial “box”, amazing things can happen.

Some things seem so OBVIOUS once they are solved. Hotels Dot Com captured the concept perfectly with Captain Obvious that says obvious things.

I need to look around and see what I can find that’s “obvious”. Not every idea has to change the world like this one, but it’s amazing when they do.

But now, the two are members of the Hudson County Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Thompson, the North Bergen great sprinter, and Zivanovic Filipovic, the state shot put champion from St. Dominic Academy, earned their status last Monday night at the annual HCTCA’s induction dinner and awards presentation at the Chandelier in Bayonne.

Thompson and Zivanovic Filipovic were inducted along with the late David Wall, a sensational distance runner in his day at both Dickinson High School and Manhattan College.

*** and ***

Wall ran for Dickinson in the 1970s and posted times in the mile run that were unheard of at the time for local high school runners. His sister, Sheila Wall Leonardo, one of the best basketball players to ever come out of St. Anthony and later played at LaSalle, was one of the people who accepted on Dave Wall’s behalf.

PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Dorothy Sweeney

2015-Jun-21

Good Morning All,

From John Reinke, we hear of " Grandma Sweeney's " fall. Mrs. Sweeney, Pete Sweeney's mom, took a fall on Thursday that required some major surgery on her kneecap to reconstruct it. Surgery was done this past Friday and we pray that Mrs. Sweeney is recuperating free of pain and that her recovery is quick and free of complication. Knee surgery can be complicated. Mrs. Sweeney, besides being Pete's Mom, has a very special place in John's heart. She was an important caregiver to John as he was growing up so that John's Mom was able to work. This special lady needs our prayers. Thank you. God Bless.

Dear f. John,

RE: COMMENT: Frank Smith (MC 1970) comments on Toner, Mike (MC1972)

Since Jasper Frank Smith has such great judgement - calling me a “bedrock of common sense” - I really wish I could claim him as friend and fraternity brother. Alas, I cannot.  Jasper Frank, while we have a common bond as Jaspers, I don't think we were acqainted at alma mater. I did not belong to ASB or any social fraternity - only Eta Kappa NU (HKN), the EE academic frat. But best wishes to you and thnak you for your kind comment.

Ridgefield Glass etches a fresh chapter with relocation
By Bill Fallon
June 25, 2015

*** begin quote ***

Now in his 10th year owning Ridgefield Glass, which dates to 1974 and which cut the ribbon on a new showroom this month, John Petchonka dodged the shuttering effects of the recession through adaptation and managed to expand. He figures 66 percent to 75 percent of company business is with contractors. The remaining business is with private homeowners.

The 2,000-square-foot showroom at 159 Danbury Road, Ridgefield, this month began displaying new products, including glass showers that effectively double the size of smaller, second bathrooms by replacing shower curtains with walls of glass. Formerly, most frameless glass shower doors swung open, making them unsuitable for small bathrooms. Ridgefield Glass now sells a “frameless slider” that, per its name, does not swing out. Petchonka said displaying it is, “One of the reasons for the move.”

Petchonka was three years into ownership in 2008 when, as he recently put it, “All hell hit and there was a market drop in Ridgefield.”

Born in New York City, Petchonka, 60 and a scientist by education and trade, reacted to the downturn by expanding his catchment area. He turned his gaze south.

*** and ***

Petchonka is a Manhattan College-trained chemical engineer who in his former business life designed and built the NutraSweet plant in Athens, Ga., and worked on developing Viagra for Pfizer, originally as a heart aid – the beating, pumping heart, not the Valentine/twin-bathtub variety. A half-hour conversation — mainly to speak about his relocation — addressed the properties of glass — “basically a solid, but you can enhance its properties with rapid heating and quenching: — and Viagra “It was a failed heart drug, but the patients kept coming back asking for more. I was not astute enough to buy stock in Pfizer.” (The drug is still used to treat some forms of hypertension.)

14 Years After Decriminalizing Heroin, Here’s What Portugal Looks Like
by Terry Turner - June 3, 2015

*** begin quote ***

he total number of people using drugs in Portugal has actually fallen by more than a third since the country began focusing on treatment programs instead of punishment.

In 2001, critics worried that drug addiction rates would skyrocket, but not only have they come down, heroin addiction rates have been cut in half.

HIV infections, which are spread by shared needles, have also been cut in half, while the number of drug-related deaths has been cut by 75%.

Under the decriminalization law, users are allowed to possess a 10-day supply of illicit drugs — anything from marijuana to heroin – and those who have more are sent before a three-person drug commission. The panel decides on a fine or treatment, but opts for treatment in four out of every five cases.

About 25 countries have reduced criminal penalties for drug use since Portugal changed its approach on illicit drugs from a criminal matter to one of public health.

In my recent trip to Keene NH, meeting with the FSP / Keeniacs welcoming me, one of the topics mentioned was their recent effort to get the State Legislation to consider decriminalizing drugs. Ending the “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs” is a key to returning freedom and liberty to USA. At the legislative hearing, they reported that one legislator opposed said: “I don’t want to hear any more about Portugal. I’m sick of hearing about Portugal!” (Like saying don’t confuse me with facts, my minds made up.) So, of course, later, another citizen speaker for decriminalizing cited Portugal.

Like Alcohol Prohibition, the “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs” has been a TOTAL failure.

In the Pepuls Republik of Nu Jerzee, my nieces and nephews reported that drugs were easier to get than beer in schools.

Young people are regular die from illegal drugs of unknown strength and purity.

Drugs are regularly reported in prisons.

Gun battles over turf by drug gangs kill each other and innocents. (Remind you of Prohibition?)

The inner cities have been devastated by “drugs”.

The police have been further corrupted by drug money.

Our Fourth Amendment rights are a casualty of this drug policy.

AND, the police have become militarized “fighting” the “war”.
Yet, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” -- attributed to Einstein

Can we NOT try treating drug addiction as a medical problem.

I am confident that WalMart, Walgreen, CVS, and the local pharmacist can drive the cost of these drugs down to where there is no profit for the drug gangs to thrive on. Some studies have claimed that aspirin will actually cost more than “illegal” drugs.

Also, the “kool factor” will be gone. If there not illegal, then the young won’t be tempted to be “kool”.

And, if they do experiment, the drugs will be pure, clean, and of a known strength.

Let’s start saving lives.

Argh!
